Hermione was caught between a rock and a hard spot. She knew that she would study under Severus Snape now that the ministry had given the okay for her to do so. Spring was starting to bloom around the manor home and she realized how truly wonderful the place was. Scorpius was growing like a weed, his words were becoming more understandable and he was now able to read small words as Hermione was teaching them to him. She had moved out of her room on the third floor and in to Lucius’s bedroom while Scorpius was moved in to Draco’s old bedroom. In her down time, Hermione and Snape would work on different potions she hadn’t made yet, improve an already existing potion and sometimes attempting to make her own potion. Draco spent all his free time watching over and interacting with his son, watching him grow up and offering different bits of advice he’d like to see happen. There was only one dark spot in this new wonderful world that was starting to open up to the happy couple. Bellatrix LeStrange or her ghost that is.
Hermione was confused as to how to handle the new ghost because she was so different than the others. She was angry which wasn’t a surprise to Hermione at all, however there were other times that Hermione, who was used to the happiness that was all over the house from her, Lucius, Snape and Draco, would feel this great sadness that would break her heart. Even Nott had disappeared and she assumed that he had somehow figured out how to cross over. She had finally brought up Bellatrix to Lucius and he told her that if she wanted they could sell the manor and move away…that they could start over with no bad memories and horror or just plain sadness. He left her with that decision to make as he went off to China for a business trip. It wasn’t that simple though, Severus could come with them wherever they went because it was Lucius that he was attached to but Draco had to remain in the house.
‘You’re considering on leaving the manor, aren’t you?’ Draco asked Hermione as she sat on the patio with a blanket around her and a book being held up with one hand.
“I don’t know” She answered honestly “I’m really starting to love it here. It’s beautiful here and the thought of playing with Scorpius in the summer, teaching him to swim and just running around the house…but I don’t want her hurting anyone else”
‘Then do what you do best, Granger’ He said ‘I love my son and I don’t want to be left in this house with my insane aunt!’
“But what do I do?” She snapped.
‘According to you’ He answered ‘There is good in everyone so work with that’
“I was wrong before” She reminded him “Look at Voldemort, he was completely evil…”
‘He was conceived under a love potion’ Draco snapped ‘My aunt was not which makes her…’
“Just crazy” Hermione hissed at him “If you’ll excuse me, I have to talk to Luna”
Hermione stormed away towards the receiving room and threw Floo powder in to the fireplace. She waited for a moment and then walked in to fireplace leaving her manor and entering Harry and Ron’s apartment. She laughed when she walked in on the boys wrestling over the last chocolate frog while Luna and Ginny were placing bets on who would end up eating the chocolate. She walked over and watched them fight shaking her head at their antics with a smirk.
“I bet a spa day that neither of them will eat that chocolate frog” Hermione said.
“You’re on” Ginny and Luna said and watched the fight before them. Hermione watched as well before stepping forward and snatching the chocolate frog out of Ron’s hand, opened it and popped it in her mouth with smile.
“Not fair, Mione” Ron whined as he watched her swallow the last bit of chocolate while the girls handed over the money they’d been betting.
“Too bad” Hermione said “Now, you two” She pointed at Ron and Harry “Go away, I need to talk to the girls privately”
“But…” Harry started.
“Please Harry” Hermione said “I need to talk to them alone”
“Fine” He muttered and took Ron by the shoulder leading him away.
Hermione told them what was going on with the manor home. Ginny told her to leave the manor immediately while Luna bit her bottom lip and thought hard about the situation. Hermione told them why she didn’t want to leave and while Luna nodded Ginny pointed out that at this point she wasn’t just trying to protect herself, that there was Scorpius to think about now and if she and Lucius got married sooner or later there would be another baby to protect as well. While Hermione wasn’t exactly thinking about marriage or babies yet, she had to admit that the redhead was right but her heart broke at the thought of leaving Draco behind. She also didn’t much like being taken away from the beautiful potions lab that she had set up, the magical gardens that were being planted this spring for her use or the good memories that Lucius must have in the house.
“I don’t think moving is going to help” Luna said, breaking her silence finally “You said that Bellatrix told you that she was haunting Hogwarts, which bothers me more than I care to admit, and then she heard you or something and all of a sudden she was in the manors sitting room?”
“Yes” Hermione answered “And don’t worry, I contacted Minerva about the Bellatrix haunting the school and she said that the grey lady had been keeping her under wraps…no one really knows why she would listen to the grey lady and no one else”
“That’s good” Ginny said “I was second guessing sending my children there when I have some”
“Same here” Hermione said “But apparently that was taking care of so nothing to worry about I guess”
“I think that Bellatrix is stuck to you” Luna continued when it appeared that they may be getting off subject “So, just like with Snape haunting Lucius I think that she can go wherever you can go”
“So she could be here?!” Ginny looked around the room.
“She’s not strong enough” Luna said “Hermione, you said that she only just started to contact you, right?” Hermione nodded her head “That means that she’s not really sure how to make her movement work, how to follow you, move stuff or pop in and out at will. The only person that is near enough for her to learn to do that from is Snape and you know he won’t help her, so I think that she’s stuck in the house for the time being”
“Okay…” Hermione bit her lip and looked at her hands “Draco told me to do what I do best, that I see the best in everyone…what does he mean?” She shrugged “Bellatrix is as evil as Voldemort was”
“Voldemort was conceived under a love potion” Luna said “He was literally unable to feel the emotion of love, it was completely lost to him and that is why he thought it was a weakness. People often fear or hate something that they’ve never experienced before and that was what he did, he only knew hate and abandonment, he thought that the more magical strength he had the better he would be compared to other people and that his lack of being able to love made him a better leader because he wouldn’t have to worry about anything in his personal life getting in the way”
“Except for the fact that he was a complete, evil nut-bag” Ginny muttered.
“And Bellatrix was just like him” Hermione reminded Luna.
“No, she wasn’t” Luna told her “Bellatrix was raised by lunatic, pureblooded assholes, that is true but she was not conceived under a love potion”
“How do you know?” Hermione asked.
“Because” Luna sighed “I spent two months locked in the cells in the bowels of Malfoy Manor. I was the only female down there and more than once Bellatrix was made to come down and watch over me. She talked, a lot. What I gathered from the conversations with her is that she was completely and utterly in lust with the dark lord…”
“Lust is not love” Hermione pointed out.
“The dark lord was not able to feel lust” Luna answered “But that’s not the point, she was also in love with someone, she explained it to me. She thought that she just wanted to kill the person, to keep them for herself to torture and use as a slave but when she explained the feelings I told her that she was jealous of the woman he was married to and on top of that she was in love with him”
“What happened?” Ginny asked, completely wrapped up in what she was assumed was some great forbidden romance.
“She tortured me” Luna answered matter-of-factly “And I didn’t see her for a few weeks but when she came back she claimed that maybe I was right but that it didn’t matter she would never, ever be with him, even if he begged her like the animal he was”
“Oh god” Hermione made a gagging motion “It was Sirius wasn’t it?”
“No” Luna answered.
“Then who?” Hermione and Ginny asked.
“I promised never to tell” She answered “I always keep my promises”
“To a murderer?!” Ginny exclaimed but Luna merely looked off in a different direction.
“Anyway” She continued “She is human, she can and did feel love, you said that there is a sense of sadness in the house again since she arrived. That is something to work with right there, she’s sad, try to find out why and try to help her”
“Oh yes” Hermione said sarcastically “While she’s pushing me down the stairs I’ll be attempting to get closer to her on a personal level” Hermione looked at her watch and smiled a little “I’ve got to go. Remus and Teddy are coming over so Teddy and Scorpius can have a playdate and Remus and I can try to pick out a good building for the school”
“Have fun” Ginny said, she gave Hermione an extremely inappropriate smile “Maybe you two can have a playdate too?”
“He’s a married man!” Hermione growled “I am happy with Lucius and why are you so obsessed with me and Remus all of a sudden?”
“Harry told her about your crush on Remus in your third year” Luna explained.
“Are you kidding me?!” Hermione growled “That was years ago, Gin. I have no interest in trying to seduce a married man when I have someone that makes me happy, got it?”
“Okay, okay” She put her hands up.
“Has Remus been to the house since Bellatrix showed up?” Luna asked curiously while not raising her eyes to the other girls in the room.
“No” Hermione said and then realization dawned on her “Oh gods…no…you can’t be saying…”
“I didn’t say anything” Luna said.
“She found herself strangely in love with Remus Lupin, didn’t she?” Hermione asked “LUNA!” The other girl jumped and looked at her “He is going to be at my house in less than ten minutes…is he in danger?”
“No” She sighed “Apparently, she had been thrown in a detention with him when she was in her seventh year and he was in his second. She wasn’t in love then, but she was amused by him and a…friendship of some sort began between them. She realized that she was in love with him when he was sixteen, she was already married but she found herself longing for him…it only got worse”
“Does Remus know?” Hermione asked
“No” Luna said “She never told him about her feelings because he’s a half-breed” She chuckled “She said that she’d been horrified when she found out that he was a werewolf and that she had assumed her interest would no longer be there but that wasn’t what happened”
“I’ve got to go” Hermione muttered, she was worried now because if the ghost was stuck to her that would mean that she was the danger to those around her “Are you sure that she won’t hurt him?”
“I’d be more worried about her following him in to the bathroom” Luna said “Trying to get a look at his goodies”
“Oh god” Hermione moaned as she walked off. When she walked out of the Floo the first thing she saw was Bellatrix standing in the corner of the room looking around with a lost and sad look but it hardened in to a look of hatred with she saw Hermione.
“Hermione” Remus called out from the hallway “We’re already here…just apparated over” Hermione looked back at Bellatrix and saw her eyes widen before she blinked out of the room.
