Took me some time, but I was finally able to finish this chapter. Hope it's to your liking. Pease Review.
Nightstar, thank you for still reading the story and for your reviews. It means a world to me. I can't even express how excited I get when I see another review. It keeps me going. I hope everyone likes the story so far. We are almost at the end of it. A few more chapters and we'll be done. Enjoy.
He found himself in the dark room and listened to the sounds around him. The wind was high this night and the sound of something else added to it. He listened carefully… ocean. The house he was right by the ocean. Wonderful. Shite gets bad, I’ll drown the git and make it look like an accident. He pulled out his wand and muttered “Lumos.” The end of the wand lighted up and he proceeded ahead until he reached closed doors with the light glowing from under them. Carefully, he opened the door and entered the room. Blonde wizard sat in one of the armchairs by the fireplace facing the fire. – “What are you doing here, Severus?” he asked without turning his head to look at the potions master. Snape lowered himself into an armchair next to him – “You don’t write, don’t visit.” Lucius poured another drink and gave it to the dark haired wizard. Severus took it with a bit of hesitation – “Don’t insult me, Severus. I’m not going to poison you with some Ogden’s and hide your wand, if I wanted to harm you, I would do so already.” Snape raised an eyebrow and chuckled – “Don’t give yourself too much credit Lucius. I’m not Potter, you couldn’t hurt me even if you tried.”
They stayed quiet for a while until blonde wizard spoke again – “So explain to me again, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?” – “Besides the obvious… tell me about that contract that you have with the Minister.” Lucius turned his head, giving him a surprised look – “Forgive my curiosity, but I fail to see how it is any of your business.” Snape laid his head against the back of the armchair and closed his eyes – “Your future son in law has all the reasons to believe that by following that contract, you might be walking into a trap” He cracked one eye open just in time to see Lucius’ lips curve in disgust when he heard “your future son in law.” – “Care to tell me what reasons that might be?” – “Well, one and the most important is that Grayback was captured by Aurors right after the fall of the Dark Lord and has been rotting in Azkaban ever since” – “Ah, then my suspicions were right. It all seemed almost too good to be true. Any clue as to why the Minister of Magic wants me out of the picture?”
- “No idea. Potter is going to find that out tomorrow” – “I don’t need him to fight my battles. I am capable of finding it out myself” – “Don’t be daft Lucius, you have a son.” Lucius refilled their drinks and turned his gaze to the fireplace. – “He’ll be fine. With me gone, his life will only be better. Plus, he has his uncle Sev, doesn’t he? I didn’t make you his godfather for no reason. If anyone can protect him, it’s you” – “I’m flattered, but I’m afraid I’ll have to decline the honor of saving your son’s arse this time. I’m a little… preoccupied these days” – “Ah, how could I forget? Having a young witch around, keeps you on your feet” – “Indeed” – “How did you like the dress by the way?” Lucius gave him a little smile in return, watching a frown form on Snape’s face.
- “You’re willing to risk getting yourself killed, just to prove that you don’t need any help from Potter? I have to admit, I gave you more credit than that” – “And may I ask, why are you suddenly so concerned about my well-being?” – “Who ever said I was?” – “Then how else should I understand you being in my house at five in the morning?” – “Truth be told… no idea. Call it a change of heart if you will” – “Never new you had one” Lucius said, curling his lips slightly. – “I just recently discovered it myself. Look, you have a son that wants to see you alive and well, and a young witch that loves you despite all your flaws” – “My son chose his own path and Ginevra… she is pregnant with my grandchild. How weird it would be if I kept pursuing her?” – “That would be weird, but what is ever not weird when it comes to both of us? You and I managed to get ourselves involved with a raving egomaniac that was responsible for killing thousands of people. We both know that if it wouldn’t be for the sudden change of fate, both of us would be dead or rotting in Azkaban for the rest of our miserable lives. Instead, we are still here, very much alive and forgiven for our past crimes and to top it off, we have two beautiful young witches that love us and are willing to see past our faults. How much better do you think it will get for us?”
- “At least your witch is not pregnant with your grandchild” – “No, because the closest thing I had to a child was this same witch that I am dating right now.” Lucius raised an eyebrow in surprise of his words. – “You are kidding me. You were in love with her this whole time?” – “I loved her since she was a child and ever since the Yule ball, I was in love with her. I tried to deny it, but to say the truth without her I feel miserable, so I decided to finally come to my senses and I realized that she is the best thing that ever happened to me. The sooner you realize it, the better. You do love her, don’t you?” – “I do” – “Then you better do something about it” – “I intend to” Lucius said after a long pause. – “Hopefully nothing stupid” – “I need to clear my name and get my family the status it used to have. If I am ever so lucky to have her back, I want to make sure people are going to look at her with respect she deserves and not just as one of those whores I used to have over the years. I also need to get a grant for divorce since I am technically still married to Narcissa” – “That will not be easy. She won’t just let you go without a battle, you might lose more than you know” – “It’ll be worth it. If I can’t have Ginny as my wife, then I don’t see the point of it all, but I also don’t want to drag her through this dirt. Now, that my suspicions are confirmed, I have a plan that I might need your help with.”
- “What about Draco? You need to make sure he won’t be tossed on the street if your plan will not work” – “I have already taken care of that. In case of my death, he’ll be covered. They all will. I have sent a letter to my attorney to amend my will and recognize Ginevra as a part of my family” Severus nodded and gave Lucius a teasing smirk – “Potter is in there too?” – “Not per say, but as my son’s spouse, he will be included.” Severus turned to him with a wide grin on his face. – “May I ask what you find so incredibly funny?” – “The sweet fate, Lucius. For so many years that boy has been a pain in my arse and now, he’s the pain in yours.” Lucius’ face went stone still before he turned to face Severus. Both stared at each other for a few long moments before bursting into an eye tearing laughter. Some time passed before they could talk again. – “So Lucius, tell me about that plan of yours.”
He returned to Malfoy Manor to find everyone asleep on the couch that has been transformed into a large bed that could easily accommodate few more people. He walked to the side Hermione laid on and gently traced her cheek with his fingers. Her eyes flew open instantly – “Severus, you’re back.” – “Shsh, I don’t want you to wake them up.” She got up quietly and wrapped her hands around his waist. “I waited for you, but then I got too tired and fell asleep, I’m sorry” he heard her whisper. – “You have nothing to be sorry for. I told you to get some rest didn’t I?” – “Did you find Lucius?” – “I did” – “Is he… coming back?” – “Not yet” – “Is he that mad at them?” – “He’s not mad, but he’s trying to get over the whole situation. He has some unfinished business to take care of, before he returns” – “What about Ginny?” Before he could answer, Draco opened his eyes and quickly got up from the bed, waking Harry and Ginny in the process. – “Did you find dad?”
- “I did Draco, just like I told you I would” – “Is he…” – “He’s fine” – “Why didn’t you bring him with you?” – “Draco, your dad is trying to deal with this situation in his own way. He also has some business that he needs to take care of, before he comes back.” – “Just say it as it is, Professor. He’s mad and he doesn’t want to see me, that’s the real reason he’s not coming back” Ginny whispered, her eyes glistening with tears again. Severus took a few steps forward and lowered himself on the couch, taking one of her small hands into his. – “I will not lie to you Ginevra, he was upset when I found him, anyone would be. I can tell you one thing for sure though, he does love you and he will return, you just have to give him some time. He has some things to take care of first” – “Did he tell you that?” – “I wouldn’t have told you if he didn’t”
He looked at his timepiece – “Now, if you don’t mind I’d like to get back to my quarters and get a few hours of sleep. As I said before, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow and we all need to rest.” Harry nodded his head in agreement – “Thanks for all your help, professor” – “You’re welcome.” He looked at Hermione – “You ready?” – “Sure” she gave Ginny a tight hug – “It’s gonna be ok, Ginns. I’ll see you tomorrow, ok? We’ll need to go see Madam Pomfrey and make sure that everything is going the way it’s supposed to.” – “Ok. Thanks for everything” – “You’re welcome. I’ll see you guys tomorrow too.” She gave each wizard a quick hug before taking Severus’ hand and walking into the fireplace. Green flames emerged from it and they were gone.
Once back in his chambers, Hermione gave him another hug – “Thanks for your help tonight” – “You’re welcome” – “Was Lucius too upset when you found him?” – “He was still a bit shaken up, but it seems like I managed to get through to him” – “That’s good. Knowing Lucius, I didn’t think it was possible” – “Never doubt my skills of persuasion.” She gave him a teasing smile – “Didn’t know you had any, since I was the one using them on you last night” – “Cheeky minx” he said giving her a gentle kiss on the lips. “It’s not too hard to persuade someone when they already want what you’re offering” – “So are you saying that Lucius really wants to be with her?” – “Lucius and I are not that different. We’re both in love with two incredible young witches that for some unknown reason want to be with us despite all of our flaws” – “Well, I don’t know about Lucius, but in my eyes, you don’t have any” – “Is that so?” – “Yes. I think you’re flawless” – “You flatter me witch, but I’ll have to disagree.” - “Then I guess, I’ll just have to persuade you” she said, giving him an evil smile and unzipping the fly on his trousers. – “Woman, you’ll be the death of me.”
Severus opened his eyes and looked at the time – “It was still early but there were important things to take care of and he had to get up. He looked at the sleeping form of his witch and smiled. Their night adventures were tiring and all he wanted to do is to get some sleep after the restless night, but Hermione had her own plans to which he had hard time saying no. She definitely knew how to use those powers of persuasion. He took a quick shower and got dressed without waking her up. By the time they finished making love, she literally collapsed on top of him, falling asleep instantly. He leaned down to kiss her nose, wrote a quick note and stepped into a fireplace. Remembering something at the last minute, he stepped out of the fireplace and made his way to the Headmaster’s office.
- “Ah, Severus. Just the person I wanted to see. Come on in my boy” – “I apologize for disturbing you at this early hour, Headmaster” – “It’s quite alright. I wanted to talk to you anyway. Please sit down.” Albus made an inviting gesture with his hand, pointing to one of the chairs by his desk. “So, what is it that you wanted to see me for?” – “It’s ahm… it’s about my letter of resignation” – “You don’t still expect me to give it back to you?” – “No” – “Wonderful. I’m glad you’ve changed your mind about leaving. I suppose I should thank Miss Granger for that.” Potion master’s usually pale face, flushed a little, making Albus burst into laughter. “I’m really happy for you, Severus. It’s about time you decided to come to your senses. You won’t ask me to send her away this time, will you?” – “No” – “Good, then I won’t be keeping you in here much longer. I understand you have much to do before the start of the new term.” Severus nodded – “Thank you for your understanding, Albus” – “You’re quite welcome, my boy. I really am glad to finally see you happy” – “So am I Albus. So am I.”
Hermione woke up from the cold air that filled the room and shifted trying to snuggle closer to Severus’ worm body, but didn’t find him and opened her eyes with the sigh of disappointment. She looked around and found a note on his side of the bed. “Good morning. I had an urgent business to take care of and had to leave early. I should be back around dinner time and I’ll see you then. Love,
Severus.”
She stretched and looked at the clock “Oh my God, Ginny. I told her we’d go to see Madam Pomfrey today.” She muttered a warming charm and ran to the shower. After a quick performance of her morning rituals, she grabbed a handful of floo powder and jumped into a fireplace. She arrived just in time to see Harry leaving to the ministry. – “Oh, hey Mione” – “Hi Harry. Is Ginny here? Yes, she is in the kitchen waiting for you. Did professor tell you anything about meeting me at the ministry?” – “No. He left a note that said that he needed to take care of some urgent business” – “I see. I wanted to thank him again for finding Lucius and making sure he’s ok” – I’m sure you’ll be able to thank him later. How bout we all meet for dinner and discuss how everything went today?” – “That’s a good idea” – “Where’s Draco by the way?” – “He’s meeting his family attorney. He thinks he’ll be able to help him reach Lucius, since he was probably the one helping him with his will” – “Let’s hope he finds something out.” She kissed Harry goodbye and went to the kitchen to collect her friend.
Harry walked to the minister’s office and greeted the secretary – “Hello Gretchen. You look lovely today. I wanted to talk to your boss, is he in?” He smiled, noticing the blush creeping up her cheeks. Gretchen was a young blonde with beautiful green eyes and fiery personality that landed her this position in the first place. She also had a biggest crash on the young wizard ever since he started his training. To learn that he was gay was unfortunate, but that didn’t make him less desirable. She looked at Harry, giving him a playful smile – “Hello, Mister Potter. The minister is not in yet, but if you want, you can wait for him here. I’ll make you some coffee if you like” – “I’d love some. Do you think I can wait in his office? I have an important business to discuss with him and I just wanted to make sure he won’t see anyone before me” – “You know that I can’t let you in there, I’ll get in trouble” – “I’ll get you right out of it. Just blame it all on me. Tell him you tried to stop me, but I wouldn’t listen and then put a binding spell on you. How about that?” he said taking her hand into his. - “If only that was true. Fine, go ahead and wait for him there, but don’t tell anyone I let you in” – “I won’t tell a soul” he kissed her hand and entered the office. Gretchen took a deep breath and traced the place he kissed with her fingers. Ahh, what would I give to make him straight.
Once in the office, Harry threw his invisibility cloak on and started going through papers on top of the massive desk. He couldn’t find any evidence that Kingsley was involved in anything illegal. Desk cabinets were all unlocked which suggested there was nothing important to hide. Harry exhaled forcefully Come on man, I know you’re hiding something. What is it? He heard noise outside and froze when Gretchen opened the door – “Mister Potter, your coffee” she called. He didn’t appear to be in the room and she returned to her desk with a disappointed sigh. Harry shook his head, he didn’t like lying to a young witch, but what he was doing was more important and he continued his search. After another half an hour, he was ready to give up. Nothing in the minister’s office had any signs of him engaging in anything that might have thrown a shadow on his picture perfect reputation.
He threw one last look around, noticing the amount of pictures that graced the walls and shelves of the office. Family, friends, coworkers. One of them portrayed the Minister and the Headmaster shaking hands. Harry smiled, a part of him was happy that he couldn’t find anything, Kingsley was a loyal friend throughout the war. Unfortunately, it also meant that they weren’t any closer to finding out about the contract with Lucius. He made a few steps to the door, when suddenly a strange feeling made him take another look at the picture, which was oddly the only one that was not moving, as if it was made with a muggle camera. He reached for the picture to take a closer look, but it seemed to be attached to the shelf. He traced the other side of the frame and found a button that he pressed with a bit of hesitation and couldn’t suppress a gasp when the bookshelf wall opened with a crack revealing a hidden passage.
Harry shook his head remembering Snape’s words about never fully knowing the person you deal with. God damn it, professor. Is it too much to ask of you to be wrong for once in your life. He mumbled “Lumos” and carefully proceeded through a dark corridor, lightened only by the shimmer of his wand. He kept going until he could clearly hear two voices. He recognized one of them as Kingsley’s. Another one belong to a woman and seemed really familiar. He whispered “Nox” and proceeded in the dark until he reached the door with a dim light glowing from under it. Thankfully, it was not fully closed and he snuck in. Woman wore a long cape, hood covering her face and Harry just hoped she would lift it, so he could see who she was.
- “Is everything ready to proceed with our plan?” – “Yes, my lady. He signed the contract and should be here at twelve. He fully believes that he is about to be send to France to capture Grayback” – “Good. He’s always been a full. I hope you’ll do your job properly this time” – “My lady, last time was not my fault. I ordered doctors not to take care of any death eaters and if it wouldn’t be for that damn Potter, Lucius would be already dead” – “I don’t care whose fault it was. I hope you understand that you can’t fail me this time. What we’re about to do is very important. I need his money to continue what my lord ordered me to. I am the only one that can do that and I need to know that I can rely on your help.” Kingsley stood on one knee in front of the woman and kissed her hand – “I will do everything in my power to make sure you’re successful, my love” – “Good. Make sure you do and you’ll get rewarded” – “My biggest reward is to be by your side.”
- “Your loyalty pleases me.” Suddenly, a small house elf appeared holding what seemed to be a package of some sort – “Here’s my Lady. Kron has returned to you. Kron has the book Lady asked of” he handed the package to his mistress. – “Finally. Just what I’ve been waiting for. You did good creature, you may go now. I’ll call upon you when I’ll require your services again” – “Kron is happy to please his mistress” he said disappearing with a soft pop. – “My Lady, is that what I think it is?” – “Yes, it’s the copy of Lord Voldemort’s diary. With its help, I’ll be able to resurrect his soul and hopefully find a worthy body to place into. With Lucius’ money and your help, I’ll be able to make my way into the ministry. By the time the Dark Lord gains his strength, all the ministry officials and members of the Wizengamot will answer to us and my Lord will be able to rule again” – “What if people won’t listen to us?” – “Everyone is replaceable. Whoever won’t follow us, will die” – “But my Lady, we won’t be able to kill everyone” – “That’s why I need Lucius’ money. Loyalties are easily bought. Do I hear fear in your voice, Kingsley?”
- “No, my Lady. I will do as you say. My life is yours to command.” He said bowing his head. – “I am glad to hear that and I wish to give you a small token of my appreciation” she said taking of the hood of her long cape. Harry had to hold his breath and put a hand over his mouth to suppress a gasp. The mysterious lady was none other than Narcissa Malfoy. He saw them share a passionate kiss, after which she spoke again, the tone of her voice as cold and commanding as it was before. – “I think that’s enough for now. Now go and make sure Lucius doesn’t make it out of here alive” – “Yes, my Lady. If I may ask one more question.” She lifted one perfect eyebrow – “Yes?” – “What about your son?” – “What about him?” – “With his father dead, he will inherit all the money” – “He’ll have a choice, just like everyone else. He will ether join us or he’ll have to die too. My lord doesn’t appreciate weakness and so do I. Now go, it’s almost time. Contact me when everything is done” – “Yes, my Lady. I understand.” With this he raised his wand and whispered a spell that opened another secret door letting his guest out of the room. Kingsley kept standing there for a while longer, deep in his own thoughts. That gave Harry a chance to get out of the room and make his way back. He needed to get Lucius out of the ministry without raising a suspicion.
