Hermione unrolled the scroll from Ginny. She had a pretty good idea of what it was going to say; Ginny had talked to her about the wedding plans a couple of weeks ago, but this did make it a bit more real.
Dear Hermione,
I hope that Errol doesn’t have to fly into the dungeons at the Ministry to find you, but since I told him that you practically live in your lab, that he should try there first!
Anyway, the plans for the wedding are coming along. Mr. Malfoy has been really generous, and I think it should be a pretty spectacular event. (I’m not even bothering to tell Draco that a nice simple wedding in my parent’s backyard would have been fine – this wedding seems to have brought him closer to his father, and for that I am happy I guess.)
I wanted to ask you this in person, when you came to visit next week, but I thought this might give you a little more time; as my best-friend in the whole world, will you be my Maid of Honor? Please say yes!
Give Errol your reply – and I really look forward to shopping for a dress for you!
Big hugs, and much thanks,
Your Becoming-More-Frazzled-by-the-Day Friend,
Ginny
She smiled as she read the note; yes, in fact, Errol had to come to the dungeons. ‘Maid of Honor’? Of course. How could she say no? Ginny was her best friend, and it was already clear that this wedding was going to be more stressful than she had envisioned. Ginny was definitely going to need a friendly, supportive face during the wedding preparations, despite the amount of time that it would take away from her research.
She took out a quill and wrote a short note in the affirmative, also confirming that she was planning on coming down to the Weasleys’ next weekend. She let Errol eat a bit of her lunch, and then sent him on his way, hoping that he wouldn’t get too lost on the way out.

Hermione was really looking forward to spending the weekend at the Weasleys’. She hadn’t seen Molly in a few months, and she only very infrequently ran into Arthur in the hallways. It would be a bit of a girls’ weekend, as the only people in residence would be senior Weasleys, Ginny and herself. Draco had to stay in London to work, and none of the other Weasley males were planning on coming home that weekend.
It would be a nice change, since she had been spending the last several weeks buried in her lab, only going home for a quick shower, a change of clothes, and to sleep.
She apparated outside the Weasley’s front door Friday afternoon, and was almost immediately greeted by Molly. “Hermione! Please, come in. We’ve been expecting you! Ginny’s in the living room looking at dresses and things. And, I’ve got dinner on the stove already, so just make yourself at home, dear.” Hermione smiled; Molly Weasley always made her feel welcome, and the Weasley home was beginning to feel more like home that her own shabby apartment.
She took her bag into the room that she would be sharing with Ginny, and then met her friend in the living room. Ginny squealed with delight at the sight of her friend, and then immediately started into the latest developments in the wedding plans.
“We’ve decided to go with traditional black, with green and silver contrasts,” Ginny paused. “It’s a little too much Slytherin-ish, I know, but the Malfoy coat of arms uses those color, and it wouldn’t look right to have too many other colors. And I don’t really mind – the green goes better with my hair than red would have,” Ginny added, almost apologetically.
Hermione smiled. “Don’t worry Ginny – I think it will look just fine. And black is so traditional – you’ll look fantastic! Besides,” she added with a wicked grin, “This way none of the Malfoys will have to worry about adding another color to their wardrobes!”
Ginny giggled, and handed Hermione a stack of catalogues and magazines. “Here, I’ve marked some dresses that I thought you might like – but look through them, and see what you think.”
Again, Hermione smiled indulgently. Spending Friday afternoon looking at modern bridesmaids’ dresses was one step away from her idea of hell on earth. But Ginny was her best friend, and she had promised to give her moral support through the whole wedding planning process. Merlin knows she’s going to need it, she thought grimly.
A thought struck Hermione as she started to leaf through the pages, “Uh, Ginny. Out of curiosity, who’s the best man? Have you got one yet?”
Ginny blushed, and nodded. “Er, um, Hermione. Don’t kill me, please. I’m so sorry, but Draco didn’t really know who else to ask; he doesn’t stay in contact with too many people from school, and well, um, he asked his godfather to be his best man.” Ginny avoided her best friend’s eyes.
“Ginny,” Hermione started, her voice a little sharp at her friend’s obvious avoidance of the subject, “Who is Draco’s godfather?”
Ginny had the sense to look a little sheepish. “It’s, er, it’s Professor Snape.”
Oh gods. Snape. Hermione choked on her tea. “Snape? And he agreed?” She could not see the caustic Potions Master attending anything as frivolous as a wedding, and she certainly could not see him as anyone’s best man.
“Well,” Ginny began apologetically. “Draco also thought that if he was around, he might also keep Mr. Malfoy in line. Not,” she added hurriedly, “That we expect him to get out of line, or anything, but just in case…” Her voice trailed off.
Hermione nodded. It did make sense. Lucius Malfoy had lost most of the feared respect that he had commanded when Voldemort was wreaking havoc, but he stil had plenty of money and lots of free time in which to stir up mischief. Having Snape around to keep an eye on Lucius might not be such a bad idea.
And Snape being Draco’s godfather explained a lot of things, too, like how Snape always turned a blind eye to all of Draco’s misdeeds when they were at school. And, she added mentally, at least there will be one other person there who will be even less comfortable being in the wedding party than she.
Still, Snape as Best Man. Actually, it was sort of funny in a perverse sort of way. Still she couldn’t see him going through with the Muggle tradition of hosting a bachelor party; the idea of Snape hiring strippers was fantastic!
The rest of the weekend was spent in a flurry of activities, and when Hermione left Monday morning, she felt has though she had just run a marathon.
