Chapter 2: In which Lucius Malfoy gets a shock
It wasn't a very long way to his town house but the street alone showed how little it had in common with the one the unlikely pair came from. It might have been as twisted and narrow as Knockturn Alley but no garbage and no prostitutes could be seen here. The façades were tidy, no broken glass and tattered curtains decorating them, no drunken bodies laying in the corners. And if the architecture sometimes looked as if gravity didn't count, well wouldn't it be boring otherwise?
Severus Snape was grateful that it was summer and he was home for the holidays because if he was right, and he could pride himself in nearly always being right, it would have required a lot of explanation on his and high running emotions on his new possession's side to get him through the floo.
Without turning his head he climbed the stairs to the entrance of his manor and laid his palm flat on a chiselled plate. The door opened soundlessly. The house was located in one of the side streets of Diagon Alley and looked rather gloomy from the outside with all its old-fashioned ornamented window frames. Without light behind those windows it had an abandoned air aound it. The entrance hall was well lit with green flame torches. He heard a little gasp behind his back but ignored it and followed the hallway down to his study.
"Good evening, Lucius. I hope I haven't left you waiting too long."
"Severus! I haven't expected you back so soon and- . What is the meaning of THIS?" A blonde man obviously had been reading by the fire, his book now lying abadnoned at the sidetable. He was not really tall but he held himself very upright, sparkling grey-blue eyes matching the blond hair and dark robes perfectly. Now he had stood up in greeting and stared aghast at the pitiful figure that had followed his friend into the study room. In comparison with all the expensive carpets, hundreds of books and fine paintings and with a good lighting the boy looked especially dreadful.
Smears in the face, clothes as dirty as the body beneath them. He looked grey all over with the exception of his eyes. They had the size of saucers at the moment and the boy was fidgeting under Lucius' inquiring stare.
"Indeed." Severus was filling one of the crystal glasses on the side table with wine. "This pitiful and dirty example of a human being belongs to me."
He had spoken in a low voice but the boy had obviously understood him because a tint of red could be now seen under all the smears on his cheeks and his head sank with embarrassment.
"He is your son?!?"
A harsh laugh. "Oh no, I bought him for the prize of two diamonds. He will be my "servant." His overcoat was thrown over a chair and the black haired man let himself fall into another armchair, lazily sipping on his beverage. Out of the corner of his eyes he observed his friends reaction. Lucius Malfoy looked as if he wanted to say something nasty but then shook his head.
"Why don't you give the boy something to eat? He looks like he needs it." They would speak later.
"I see you already ordered dinner. What would I do without you." Severus mocked and his lips twitched in the parody of a smile at the arrogant stare he received from his long time friend. He turned to his servant-to-be. "Little rat, you can eat."
"But sir! I cannot possibly eat your dinner! I will wait till later."
The boy was clearly shocked at the prospect of such sacrilege.
"Are you arguing with me?" The undertone in the soft voice made the younger one shake his head in the negative. "I thought so. Eat."
During this short conversation Lucius had put some chicken and vegetables on a plate and now placed it on a little table, pointing at it and retuning to the unlit fireplace and his friend but making a wide circle around the boy, wrinkling his nose. Both men watched as the youth devoured the food.
"What are you playing at, Severus?"
"Why do you think that I am up to something?"
"I know you long enough to know a little bit about how your mind works." The other only swirled the wine in his glass and the scowl on his face deepened a little bit. "I could have acted out of charity."
This provoked a snort, a sound not fitting for his elegant friend."Not very likely but I will let you play your game alone and watch from the idelines. You always provide me with some entertainment."
"You must be really desperate to find interest in such a small event like me buying a street child."
"You have no idea. Narcissa is redecorating our manor."
"If I ever express the wish to marry, hit me over the head until I come to my senses."
The discussion turned to more domestic topics like the progress of the Malfoy heir; the financial situation of a friend and the blunder the Ministry had produced this week and so on.
They were interrupted by a timid: " I am finished."
"Obviously."
The next moment Severus had a boy at his feet and soft lips were kissing his free hand. Trustingly the boy smiled at him.
"Thank you, master."
Severus sneered but it didn't unsettle his little admirer. "Whatever for? I wouldn't have thought to feed you. Your thanks should go to Mister Malfoy over there."
Politely the boy made a little bow in Lucius' direction but he quickly turned back to his new master. "I am grateful because you rescued me from Vernon."
"Again, you shouldn't thank me. I might be a much harsher master than your brother ever was, demanding and cruel." Green eyes shone up at him and it was clear that he wasn't put off.
"What to do now with you. Let me think." Severus ringed a little brass bell and a bald man, the butler, entered the room. He must have been waiting outside.
"Walters, have you noticed this boy?"
The man looked stoically at the crouching figure. "Yes sir."
Snape sneered.
"He notices him, how wonderful. This is-" a brow rose and the boy quickly answered.
"Harry. Harry Dursley."
"How quaint and comfortably short. Walters, you will take Harry and outfit him with a bed and some nightclothes-"
"And a bath." Lucius added.
"Gods, yes. A bath it shall be and three sets of robes in a plain black, as it is suitable in a livery for my servant. Then you will let him sleep. Tomorrow I will ask for him."
" A bath, bed and clothes Sir. I understand. Follow me boy." The strange pair left the room and the heavy doors shut.
Lucius folded his hands and watched the black haired closely. "I never thought of you as someone who goes for underage-, what did you call him, servants?" A suggestive wink.
"I have reason to believe he is sixteen so he isn't underage. And you are wrong, I have no taste for school children, especially not such filthy brats. But I have my reasons." Onyx eyes glittered softly. "Do you believe that one small stone thrown in a pond can make big enough waves to destroy much bigger rocks?"
They shared a look.
"So the boy is a tool."
"He might be, he might be not. Don't break your beautiful blond head over it. Too many cooks and so on you this saying. And I don't want this special dish spoiled."
"Don't do something harsh but I needn't tell YOU, don't I?. The only time I have seen you do something impulsively was when you er, courted Lily Evans and she married this Potter after he challenged you to a duel. What a cene, my friend, what a scene it was."
Severus shuddered. "Don't remind me. It was rather Shakespearean and very unlike me. I pride myself to know better now."
"You had a soul back then. And I think it died with Lily's death." Lucius knew that he entered unstable ground. Despite his normally cold exterior he really cared for his caustic and sarcastic companion of both their hildhood and adult years.
"How wrong you are. I do posses a soul. It probably sleeps now soundly in the servant's quarters.
