Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Disclaimer: If J.K. Had thought up a character like Lucky, she would have put her in the first five books. So I guess this means that I don’t own them. I barely own a DVD player and a copy of the first two movies. Try and take them and I will cut off your hand and feed it to my boyfriend’s turtle. Who just happens to be named Mad Eye Moody. And is vicious, and hisses. A lot.
Rating: NC-17, for violence, language and sex. Please read responsibly.
Authors notes. Oooohhh…. many, many thanks to Joy, who seemed to like my character so much that she just couldn’t wait for me to finish it, and begged to Beta it, just so she could read the main story first. Cheeky little chit. Hmm… my kinda lady. Cool beans.
First off: I do not advocate teenaged smoking. Lucky just seemed to scream it though, and as I am a smoker, it seemed to work.
Second: I DO NOT ADVOCATE VIOLENCE PERPETRATED ON CHILDREN WHAT SO EVER. But every good heroine needs something big to get over, and again, Lucky just screamed this.
Thirdly: *sniff* I do not live in either Los Angelus or England. I live in the furthest corner of the northern continental United States of America. It rains. A lot. And the only thing I have to do most days is write. As such, if there are any mistakes pertaining to these areas, that’s why, and I beg your forgiveness before hand.
Chapter two: Finding the Wolf
They walked through busy Diagon Alley. She had no memory of it, but Katriana Hunter, also known as Lucky, was sure that she had once traversed these streets with her mother. Indifferent to the English culture, she had dressed in pants and a blouse, instead of the long heavy dresses anoaksoaks, the ones that made her look as though she had stepped out of a fantasy book, Tolkein or Grimm perhaps. Tyrell Powers, also called Quills, had told her she looked ravishing, and that no one could ever forget her beauty. Lucky supposed he was biased.
But when she made her entrance into Wizarding society, she would show them what she had become, a powerful Potions mistress, one to be reckoned with.
Quills strode beside her, towering over her in his height, made her feel secure in the knowledge that she had done the right thing. After accessing the vault her mother had left her in Gringotts, she and her friends were shopping for the school supplies that they needed. Upon entering Flourish and Blotts, she was assailed by the musty smell of old books and papers, intermixed with the taste of ink on the air.
Walking also with them was James Heit, also known as Shaggy, and Carlton Milkon, also called Spinner. Stripes and Snow were down at the local ice cream shop. Wings had yet to make an appearance this morning. And altogether, they were the Unicose Wolves, the championship Quidditch team.
Most people would not know what Unicose was. It was an elite School geared towards the development and training of the more practical side of magic. Lucky was being trained in Potions, Quills in Transfiguration, Shaggy in the Medical arts, Snow in Charms, Spinner in Divination, Wings in Magical Creatures, and Stripes in the Tactical and Political side. A wide variety of talents and personalities, they were a team.
And now they were going to school that she had turned down when she was eleven. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The school her mother, uncle and father had attended. If she was honest with herself, while she had turned her back on her heredity, she still tried to capture some of the spirit that her family had created at Hogwarts. Thus she and the others had created the American chapter of the Marauders. It was all in the spirit of mischief and fun. But somewhere along the way that had changed. Now they were a highly trained force for the protection against the dark side of Magic.
The whole reason they were in England. The fact that Voldemort had come back, after years of non-existence, was mind-boggling.
"He’s like a damned cat." She muttered to herself, while perusing the potions s ofs offered.
"Say what?’ Quills said, holding the books she had chosen.
"Oh, just thinking of someone who should be long dead." She smiled at him. "Ready to go?"
"Yeah, lets go catch up with Stripes and Snow. We don't want them to have all the fun."
After paying for their books, they made their way to the ice cream shop, intending to join Stripes and Snow for a snack, when a large arm reached around her from behind, and she was pulled against a rock hard chest.
"Hello Lucky. Alex is ready for us to get to Hogwarts. I don’t think he thought, when he decided to let us have a stop at Diagon Alley, that we would scatter to the four winds." Wings took off his sunglasses and gave an appreciative glance at young witch who walked by. "Pity really. I think I could have stayed here for a few more days."
"Did you get all your supplies, Wings? You know that we won’t get another chance to get books and so forth until we are finished." She pulled han hands off her waist and smiled at him. "And, no touchies. You know better than that."
"Well excuse me. Aren’t we Miss high and mighty?" She snorted. "No. I mean it. You need to come down a few notches, Darlin’."
"Wings. Do not make me poison you. Seriously." There were times when she really wanted to hurt Wings. Something about him just didn’t ring true. It was like he was always watching her. Like he wanted something from her, something she couldn’t give to him. But she knew that he was one of Quills’ best friends from Inglewood, so he couldn’t be all that bad.
"Hey. Why don’t you get Snow and Stripes? We’ll meet up with you in the Leaky Cauldron, and then we’ll apparate to that Hogsmeade place. Then we are to give a demonstration, and then we can all have a quietner.ner." Shaggy broke in. "Lucky, why don’t you head on up. Quills, Spinner and I will catch up with you in a bit. Okay. That’s a good girl now."
She walked away, knowing that one of the three was about to gWingWings a piece of their mind; smiling, she leaned against a wall and pulled out a pack of Camels. After lighting one, she put on her sunglasses against the bright autumn sun, pondering the shape of the clouds. Somewhere up there was a shred of wisdom that eluded her.
Knowing that in all her life, she would never seat sat she needed. She could only search, and pray that she would receive guidance. Kinda like Joan of Arc.
On exhale; she turned her head to look at the wall. A foot or so above her head, she spied a sign that read, KNOCKTURN ALLEY. Hmmm... That sounded interesting. Tossing the cigarette aside she began to walk down the alley.
Dodging wizened old hags hawking body parts; she made her way towards a dusty shop that promised difficult to find ingredients. Entering, she noted the absence of a bell. The old shopkeeper eyed her with interest. "May I help you, my dear?"
She could feel her flesh start to crawl as his slimy voice slid over it. "I am looking for Basilisk Fang. Preferably powdered."
He licked his lips. "That is a difficult ingredient to come by. And it is also illegal to sell to you. You are an underage witch, am I correct?"
"I need the Basilisk Fang. And I don’t care how much I have to pay for it."
"I don’t have any for you. Please leave. And don’t tell anyone that you came into my shop."
The door opened, and in walked a graying man in his thirties. The shopkeeper’s gaze slid from her to the man, and she could almost see the dollar signs ping into his eyes. "Mr. Lupin. How nice to see you. I assume that you are here for your potion?"
"Yes, I am. Is itdy ydy yet?" He smiled tiredly at the shopkeeper and placed a pouch on the counter that clanked. "I have to get home before moonrise so I would like to get out of here as soon as possible."
"Of course, Mr. Lupin. Let me go in the back and get it." The shopkeeper turned to Lucky. "And you, I want you gone when I return."
Lucky huffed and turned to leave. As she opened thor, or, she paused. "Tell me. Do the transformations hurt as much as they used to... Moony?"
He gasped. Whirling to face her, he stared at her. "Serita? But I thought that you had died."
She shook her head sadly. "Not Serita."
"Then who?" He blinked in confusion. "You are too young to have gone to school with me. And you are the spitting image of Serita Black. Who are you??"
"Let me introduce myself. My name is Katriana Black Hunter." She smiled. "Does that make it any clearer to you?"
"Rita’s daughter?" He strode to her. Looking down at her, Lupin reached out and brushed his fingers against her cheek. At her nod, his eyes moistened. He embraced her in a tight hug, rocking slightly. "My god. You look just like her."
Lucky sniffled. Nodding, she held on to him. "I have heard that a great deal." She pulled away from him. "Let me look at you. Jesus, Moony. What have you done to yourself?" She noted the lines around his eyes, and the gray in his hair. He looked old and tired. The years since she had last seen him had not been kind. Shaking it off, she stood on her toes, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissed his k. "k. "God, have I missed you."
"No more then I have. Listen. Let me get this thing finished in here, and then I will walk you to Diagon Alley. Wait right here."
The shopkeeper returned at that moment. Lucky could tell by the sour look in his face that he was not happy to see her. She smiled weakly and watched as Lupin spoke briefly with the old man. Maybe this was her gift for being such a good girl lately; seeing her Godfather, the man that should have raised her when her mother was killed.
Up until her mother had been killed, Remus Lupin had been a regular guest at their house. He was her Godfather, and an honorary Uncle. A regular at Christmas and birthdays, she had become close to this man who her mother trusted completely.
The last time she had seen Remus was when the judge ruled that he could not become her legal guardian, based on the fact that he was a registered werewolf. She could still remember the look of loss and pain in his eyes the when he had hugged her in the hallway outside the courtroom. His parting words had echoed in her ears for years.
"Be a good girl for your e Bae Baxter. And remember, Ana, I love you."
She had been a good girl. But nothing could have stopped Baxter’s anger at the slightest thing. Lucky figured that even a judge had a right to be wrong sometimes.
Remus Lupin walked over to her marveling at the changes that eight years had wrought. When she was younger, her smile was more ready, and tended to reach the whole of her face. Now her smile barely reached her eyes, even when faced with a cherished member of her family. Inwardly he cursed Baxter, the man who had married her mother only four years before her untimely death. For surely it was him that had killed the outward joy and expression that had welled up in Ana.
It had taken a few moments for him to realize that he wasn’t looking at a ghost; so much did the daughter look like the mother. His heart had stopped in the first moment of realization, looking at a young woman that he had given up all hope of ever seeing again. Baxter had made that very clear.
It was a confrontation that had occurred in the halls of the courthouse, heartbeats after telling her to remember his love. Baxter had pulled him aside, and for the first time he had witnessed he fires of hate in the wizard. "You are nothing but a worthless werewolf, and I will be damned if I will allow you to ever have anything to do with my daughter again. You will never have any tie to her, and she will soon forget you. And you can guarantee that she will never have any attachment to those damned Marauders." Then taking Katriana’s hand in his, he led her away, speaking sharply to the girl when she looked back at Remus.
That had been the last time he had ever seen her or heard from her. He had sent letters over the years, especially when he had learned from Dumbledore that she had turned down the invitation to go to Hogwarts. Curiosity had burned in him at that. Why had she decided to go to another school? Had Baxter had his sinister hand in that?
He had once traveled to America to see her fly. It had been at the Finals for the American Quidditch Association. He watched avidly as she dipped and weaved. In the chase after the snitch, she had almost been hit by a bludger more then once. But when she had flipped on the broom, one hand holding the handle, her whole body adrift in the air, the other hand reaching for, and then catching the snitch, he along with the entire crowd had stood and cheered. In that moment, Remus had seen the girl she had once been.
Walking with her to Diagon Ally, he bent forward and murmured, "Now what were you doing in that shop? Didn’t anyone tell you Knockturn Alley is off limits to underage wizards?"
She winced. Oh, yeah. She was gonna be in trouble now. If she didn’t tell the truth, he was gonna know. The hazards of having a Marauder for an Uncle. Maybe she should try a half-truth. That way, she wasn’t really lying. "I was looking for an ingredient that I need for a potion that Alex, that’s my Potion’s teacher, and I, were working on."
"And does he know that you went down there?" There was a sternness in his voice that indicated he knew she was leaving something out.
"No. He just thinks that I am on my way to meet him at the Leaky Cauldron." She smiled. "It’s okay Moony. I’m not doing anything I shouldn’t."
"That is debatable. Now, another thing. What are you doing here when you should be in school?? It is only October, and I know that school doesn’t end until June." He gestured towards a bench. "Have a seat, Ana."
It was after they were seated that she pondered the question. It was a hard oor hor her to admit. How could she tell him that the school she loved had been declared unsafe in the light of the Dark Lord’s return? Well, as her mother once said, it’s best to just bite the bullet. "Some of my classmates and I are being moved to Hogwarts to finish our schooling. The school board for Unicose has declared that the school and the grounds are not safe from Death Eater attacks. We were told that it is for our own safety." She looked up at him. "Do you think that we’ll be safe there?"
Remus pondered the question. It was true that many schools abroad were shutting down, and shifting students to other schools, along with their teachers, in an effort to make less targets for the Death Eaters, who proved in the past that they were more then willing to attack a school to get to Muggle-born wizards. And one well-known fact was that Hogwarts had never been directly attacked. And if he had been the one to decide where Ana was to go, he would have chosen Hogwarts also. Dumbledore could protect her from Death Eaters. But Remus wasn’t sure that he could protect her from herself.
"I am sure that everything will be fine. The aurors will find as many Death Eaters as they can and soon You-KWho Who will be gone again." He put an arm around her and hugged. "And I know that Albus Dumbledore will do everything in his power to protect the school and everyone in it. Even a bunch of inner city LA kids."
She huffed. "I’ll have you know that I grew up in Beverly Hills. I resent being called an inner city kid."
Remus smiled. "Well, if the shoe fits..."
"Oh, shut up." She grinned, closing her eyes, leaning her head against the back of the bench. "Ya know, I have to get out of here pretty soon. We have to apparate to Hogsmeade and then meet a coach that’s gonna take us up to Hogwarts."
"Oh delightful. You know how to apparate. And is this legal in America?" Remus looked at her, wondering if Hogwarts was ready for her. He knew that certain measures had been made for his attendance, but for her, there was no telling what Dumbledore would do to make both her and the other students safe.
"Yup. You take a test on your sixteenth birthday. So I’m all nice and legal. Not that it matters much to you. I know all about some of the stunts you pulled in school. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw bricks."
"I’m not throwing bricks." He folded his hands behind his head. "Besides, I don’t know anything about the things YOU pulled in school. I don’t know anything about you. I don’t know what you like to eat. I don’t know what you like to listen to when you study. I don’t even know what you want to be when you graduate."
"Okay. Lets address that. I like to eat Chinese food, particularly Almond Chicken. I like to listen to anything classical when studying, but I like dance and hip hop when practicing Quidditch or any other time. I plan to be a potion’s teacher, or a potions maker when I graduate. Granted I can get apprenticed to a reputable Potion’s Master." She turned to him. "Anything else?"
"I have a whole lot more questions. But I think that I have waylaid you enough. I’ll walk you over to the Leaky cauldron and see you off." He stood up and reached out a hand to her.
She stood up and walked with him. They walked without words, content to be in each other’s company. Upon reaching the brick wall, Remus turned to her.
"I would like to write to you when you are at Hogwarts. Is that okay?"
"You have to ask?" Her eyes turned misty. "I would be honored if wou would write to me. I would even like for you to come and visit me, during the trips to Hogsmeade. We can talk more then, even have a meal and a drink. I can catch up on what has changed in your life, and you can find out more about mine."
A man about Remus’ age walked over to them. "Lucky, is this man bothering you?"
"Oh, no. Alex, let me introduce you to my godfather, Remus Lupin. Remus, this is Alex DeWinter, my Potion’s teacher at Unicose." She kept one hand on Remus’ arm as she made the introductions. "Are you almost ready to go, Alex?"
"Yeah. You have about three minutes, then we have to get out of here." He nodded to Remus. "Nice to meet you, sir. You should be proud of your goddaughter."
"Thank you, I am." He waited for Alex to leave before looking askance at Lucky. "You want to explain the nickname?"
"Oh just a call name. Like the fighter pilots use. It’s better then being called ker ker gurl’" She smiled. "Are you going to spend the last three minutes we have together interrogating me?"
"No. I am going to spend them hugging you." He enveloped her in a hug. After releasing her, he looked sternly at her. "Are you sure that is the only reason for the nickname."
She bounced away, and over to a tall amazonian-esque witch who was holding out a backpack to her. "Nope. There is another reason. I’m just like you." Lucky winked at Remus and raised her arms over her head. "See ya in a few weeks, Moony." With that she apparated.
*********
Lucky had been prepared for her first view of Hogsmeade. Her mother had often spoke of her school years, as a way to recapture the memories of a time when she and her brother were young, carefree, and innocent. Long before her brother’s best friend was killed, and he arrested for murder. Back when Serita’s only concern was getting through her classes. Long before her heart was broken, and her spirit crushed.
Her mother hadn’t dated her father, who ever he was, in school. It was only after Lily and James had been married that she started to date the man. He had been a mystery to Lucky all her life. A shadowy figure of ridicule, that Baxter frequently threw up in her face, proving that she was worthless. For if her own flesh and blood wanted nothing to do with her, what made her think anyone else would.
Lucky knew some thing’s about him, gleaned by what her mother and her uncle Remus had left unsaid. She had inherited her hair from him, ireasreasy nature a bane for many years until Alex had worked with her to concoct a potion to counter the effect of Mother Nature. She also knew that he as skilled in potions. Her mother couldn’t make a potion to save her life.
She sighed and looked towards the north. There, shrouded in mists and mysteries, lay Hogwarts. She jumped when Shaggy put his hand on her shoulder. He smiled at her. "It’s gonna be okay, Lucky. I’m with you all the way." She nodded and watched him begin walking. Hoisting her backpack higher on her shoulder, she began to make her way up the path, right behind him.
