The warning
One morning during breakfast, Thea was silently eating her toast, lost in her own thoughts when the mail owls flew into the room. To her great surprise a letter was dropped on her empty plate. Not in a habit of reading private mail in public, Thea quickly left the table. Once in the deserted and silent hallway, Thea read the letter. It was from her uncle. Her eyes scanned the page rapidly, then she closed her eyes and leaned her head against the cold wall. Angrily she crumpled the note into a ball, and then as instructed incinerated the paper and envelope with a quick spell. She then stormed down the hallway towards the relative safety of her room.
The next morning Thea sat brushing out her hair, her eyes staring unseeing into the mirror. Her hair was long and brown; not brunette, not mousy, just brown. And in all honesty it needed a cut, but she was so busy with her studies she rarely remembered such things. She didn't mind it looking shaggy however, as usually she held it pulled back from her face.
This morning she was simply going through the motions. Her mind just wouldn't focus on anything, and although Thea had slept little the night before, she knew the real reason was the content of yesterday's letter. In all her lessons her mind had only been partly on the subject matter. Few noticed however which allowed Thea to think and plan what needed to be done, if anything.
The day passed quickly, her lessons flying by in a barely noticed blur. Some had commented on her rumpled appearance and the dark smudges under her eyes, but Thea had pinned them with a scornful stare, muttered something cutting, and the comments had quickly stopped. Even the prospect of a potions lesson could not distract her from her thoughts, and halfway through mixing up a new potion she noticed Snape was watching her.
She waited for him to speak but he simply stared down at her. Her eyes flicked to her potion, then back to his face, and then again at her potion. Her vision cleared and she realised she had made a mistake. Involuntarily she placed a hand over her eyes wearily, before searching out the ingredients to correct her formula.
At the end of the lesson Thea was one of the last to leave, having taken an unusually long time to clear away her equipment. Just as she was heading for the door her books held tightly against her chest, Snape stopped her.
'I want to see you in my office after dinner.' Thea nodded without looking at him, and walked out. She allowed herself a small sigh once out in the hall. Great, she thought. Now I have to explain my lack of attention in class. But Thea had no intention of telling anyone the real cause of her distress, and set about creating a reasonably believable explanation. It wasn't hard.
'I haven't been sleeping well.' She told the blank face of Professor Snape later that evening. Her dinner was sitting like a lead weight in her stomach, she she shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
Snape's eyes bore into her for a moment before nodding, his eyes hooded once more. 'Nightmares?'
Thea frowned. She hadn't expected him to enquire further. 'Sort of.' Was all she would say on the subject.
'I can give you something to help you sleep if you wish.'
Thea was shocked at such a generous offer, but then realised that if her grades slipped it might reflect badly on the teacher who boasted most about her success; Professor Severus Snape.
Thea smiled a genuine smile, and said, 'Thank you. I would appreciate that.'
Snape merely nodded before opening one of his desks drawers and taking out a small vial. The liquid inside was a deep blue, almost black, and Thea bit back a smile as she realised how similar in colour it was to the night sky. Snape obviously didn't get the joke, or he just didn't find it an event to smile over, either way he simply handed her the vial with a nod.
'Take a teaspoon before bed, and keep the bottle somewhere safe. An overdose could be lethal.' He instructed in a strong voice, his eyes once more staring intently into hers. Thea suddenly felt extremely tired, and she noted with annoyance that her fingers shook ever so slightly as she took the vial from Snape's long, tapered fingers.
He frowned and so did Thea. 'Maybe a visit to Madame Pomfrey might not go a miss.' His eyes were hooded.
'No, I'm fine.' Thea stood up abruptly, feeling very angry that one letter could cause such a reaction. She was being childish, but worst of all she was being weak.
Snape nodded, and Thea spoke a brief 'thank you' before rushing out the door and back to her dorm.
Snape closed his study door with a brief flick of his wand, and seated himself once more behind the desk. He laced his fingers together and rested his chin upon them, his eyes staring unseen at the now firmly closed door.
He suspected that something much worse than poor sleep was effecting Thea. He had had his suspicions for a while about her and her connections, but as of yet that was all they were; suspicions. Once again Snape would have to play his hand carefully in order to obtain information without arousing the suspicion of those who watched him closely. It was no easy game he was playing.
