Chapter 1
Harry looked around the elegant sitting room he was now
in. It wasn’t what one would expect
from the Dark Lord. It was warm and
comfortable, with plush velvet seating and a large crackling fire. He was currently seated across from his
father, who was staring intently at him.
Voldemort had dismissed the Death Eaters in order to figure
out exactly what to do with Harry Potter.
“You broke into the mind of Albus Dumbledore. How.”
“He’s been having me learn Occlumency for 2 years now. To keep me safe from you, he said. He assumed I would never be able to best
him. The last time he tried to break
into my mind, I pushed him out and followed him back into his.” Harry replied.
“Not many wizards have the power to obliviate someone so
strong.”
“He has always underestimated me,” Harry said with a
smirk. “He has underestimated my power,
intelligence, and patience for as long as I can remember. As long as I played the part of the Golden
Boy, he was convinced I was firmly under his thumb.”
Voldemort regarded Harry thoughtfully. When Harry had let him into his mind, to
view the events with Dumbledore, he was able to see the boy was telling the
absolute truth. Harry had given him
free reign of his memories, as a sign of good faith. He had seen Harry’s anger and frustration towards the old man, as
well as anger towards his friends at Hogwarts and many of the professors. He was surprised at how easily Harry seemed
to accept the facts of his parentage, and in fact, seemed to relish the idea of
being son of the Dark Lord. It seemed
there was a lot about Harry Potter the world didn’t know.
“Tell me Harry, why is it you seem so content to be sitting
here in my presence, when not a few months ago we were attempting to kill each
other. Through your memories I have
seen your opinion of me, heard the picture Dumbledore painted of the hideous
Dark Lord, and yet here you are, ready to join the very people you have hated
your entire life.”
Harry’s eyes hardened, as he answered. “All my life I have felt…different. Unable to be myself, for fear it would
terrify those around me. I was supposed
to be in Slytherin you know…but Dumbledore made sure all the people I had
contact with during my first hours in the wizarding world told me how evil
Slytherins were. How you were a
Slytherin. How all Slytherins go
dark. I didn’t want to be that, after
all, I thought you were the one who killed my parents. But as the years went by, I realized that I
probably belonged in Slytherin, not Gryffindor. I was different than my housemates. I was darker.
Cynical. They didn’t understand
me, they thought I was ‘pouting’ to get more attention. They tried to make me hide the fact that I
was a parsletongue, so they wouldn’t feel uncomfortable.
“Up until that day with Dumbledore, I assumed that Slytherin
side of me was because of the scar, that part of me that was your power. Or so I was told. Once I knew the truth, I realized that it was all a part of me
that I was trying to repress. That
everyone was trying to pretend didn’t exist.
But it was me. Not
someone else, not some mystical curse, it was me. Who I was. What
I was.
“When I saw what he did to my mother, to you, I realized
that he is the true villain. Not
you. You were different before, before
he took her away from you. He forced
you to become what you have. He forced me
to become what I have. He took away my
family, to further his own aims.
“One of the only things I’ve wanted in my life, is a
family. I’ve never had one. Never had someone to praise my
accomplishments, to listen to my dreams, hell even to punish my misdeeds. I could have had all that, if it weren’t for
Albus Dumbledore.”
Voldemort watched Harry carefully during his tirade, noting
the hatred and coldness that became more apparent the longer he talked. ‘He has his mother’s eyes. And my temperament it seems.’
“Albus Dumbledore will pay for what he has done to you and
I, Harry. I can promise you that. You were right, I was a much different person
when Lorelai was alive,” he said. For
the first time in nearly twenty years, he mourned the loss of what little
humanity he may once have had. There
was also a cold rage running through his veins, directed specifically toward
the old wizard that had plagued him for so many years. ‘Oh yes, he will pay…’
“But for now, it is late.
You will stay here until school starts again. Oh yes, you will be going back to Hogwarts, but there is much to
be done before then. We will start your
training tomorrow, you’ve quite a bit to catch up on, my son,” Voldemort said,
already thinking about the years of Dark Arts training his son should have had,
and how little time he had to rectify that.
Harry rose from his seat and bowed to his father. He was pleased and more than a little relieved
that Lord Voldemort seemed willing to accept him as his son. A house elf
appeared to take Harry to his rooms. As
he turned to go, he felt a hand on his shoulder. His father’s voice whispered in his ear.
“We shall be great, you know.”
