Disclaimer: Same old thing, the whole HP universe is not

Author’s Note: I know I kinda
left it hanging but I started typing late at night and it was time for me to go
to bed, so the following chapters should be longer. For all the reviewers thank
you. It’s nice to be appreciated.
Severus Snape, longtime Professor
of Potions barely repressed a sigh of annoyance. Another school year to make it
through with the terrible trio. The dark lord was still in power and growing
more dangerous, Severus thought glancing through the thinned ranks of every
house. Slytherin of course had not been affected at all. Slytherin only housed
purebloods. ‘If I make it through this year I must be sainted.’ Snape thought
sarcastically as he watched Potter and Weasley walk into the hall and take
their places.
Remus Lupin
finally returned toenseense against the Dark Arts teaching position watched as
Severus’ eyes narrowed as he watched Harry and Ron. “You know Severus this is
their last year you might just try and be pleas.” Remus stopped himself
suddenly as his sensitive nose detected the odor of, something. Remus couldn’t
put his finger on it. He would swear that it was another werewolf, but this one
person had a different tang to their smell, almost catlike. Remus turned his
attention to the entry where another group of students were entering, Hermione Granger was one of them. Remus’ eyes were immediately drawn to her arm. Her
left one was in a cast up to her elbow. Her face showed the trials that she had
been through, her eyes shadowed and hiding her secrets completely.
Severus
looked over at Remus, disgust washing over him. Though the man had never really
done anything to him in human form, in werewolf form he had almost scratched
him. Severus shuddered at the thought of being a werewolf. Mindless once the
moon’s pull held sway over them, but just as deadly as if they were in control.
He turned his head to see what had made Lupin stop talking mid sentence.
Severus gave a mental shrug as he saw that Granger girl walking in. “Fancy
yourself in love with a student? Really Lupin I would have thought better of
you.”
“Oh sod off
Snape. I just smelt another were..something, and I was trying to see whom it
could be when Miss Granger walked into my view and I noticed that her left
wrist was broken. (An. why do they always put the cast up till your elbow even
though it was only your wrist that was broken????) and I was wondering how that
happened.”

Snape
looked again and sure enough Granger’s arm was in a muggle cast. “I guess she
hasn’t had the time to go see Pomfrey yet.”
Remus
looked over at his fellow Professor, one time classmate and raised a skeptical
brow. “Really Snape, showing some concern over a student who isn’t even in your
house, impressive I must say.”
Snape gave
his trademark sneer. “I only wondered if Granger will come up with an excuse as
to why she cannot do her potions work. Besides you’re the one who noticed her
first.”
Remus was
about to retort when Dumbledore walked up to the table. “Sometimes things are
better left unsaid. Remus, Severus act like the men I know you both to be.”
Hermoine
watched with interest as Remus stopped in mid sentence to look at the entryway.
‘So Remus can smell that t is is another werewolf here, interesting. Maybe I
can get another ally in my quest. After all the next full moon is only a week
away and already I can feel the wolf running through my blood. I wonder if Remus
will be able to single me out. Oh well after the feast I have to meet with
Dumbledore in his office.’
“Harry,
Ron, Neville, Seamus glad to see all you guys. Ron where’s Ginny?”
Ron pulled
a face and muttered something about temperamental sisters. Harry shot Ron a
look that said don’t start. “So Hermoine how did you break your arm?”
“Actually I
only broke my wrist but in the muggle world they give you a cast all the way up
to the elbow. Why I don’t know but I’ve written a note complaining that the undue
itching that the extra cast material causes to my arm cannot simply be helping
me keep my wrist immobilized. As to how I broke it I fell down and someone fell
down on top of my wrist thus causing it to break and now if the inquisition is
over I would like to sit down and get ready to welcome the new Gryffindors if
there are any.”
The four
males looked at each other and shrugged. Hermoine didn’t want to talk well
okay. But curiosity still roamed through the boy’s minds as they watched
Hermoine carefully pour herself a glass of pumpkin juice. All at the table new
of the Death Eaters attacks on muggle-born witches, but what still puzzled
everyone, including the ministry was how they were killing them. Shreds
of what was left could only be identified by what house the residents were
living in. As to how Hermoine had survived no one knew. Which is why no one
wanted to ask her. Touchy subject you know.
Dumbledore
watched through said eyes as his favorite student sat down and politely replied
to the questions asked of her. ‘Not the right questions though.’ Dumbledore
thought, and wondered what had happened to Hermoine Granger. Her home had been
in shambles, her being the only survivor. Being the resourceful student that
she was she had attended her families’ funerals, then had sold the house,
contents and had taken a room at the Leaky Cauldron. Dumbledore couldn’t think
of what Miss Granger’s life would be like, especially since the Dark Lord would
not let the girl live. Only this girl could spoil his genocide plans now. The
wizarding world had tried to take steps to hide all its muggleborn, but somehow
they were discovered and killed. Whole families slaughtered mindlessly.
Dumbledore turned his attention to where McGonagall was waiting for his signal.
With a regal nod of his head he bade the transfiguration professor to enter
with the newest batch of Hogwarts students.
Hermoine
gave a sigh of relief as the sorting ceremony was over, the feast almost over
and pushed aside her plate. Eating to keep up the energy needed for the extras
she had meant eating twice what she normally would. She couldn’t pretend that
she hadn’t seen Ron; Harry, Neville and Seamus’ eyebrows rise as they watched
her go back for seconds. ‘What so you think that I’m going to eat my sorrow
away and turn into a butterball. Oh puleeze. How childish. But remember
Hermoine they’ve forgotten that you added a year to your age when you used the
time turner. So technically you are a full year older then them.’
“Miss
Granger?”
Hermoine
turned her attention to Professor Dumbledore who had appeared at her side.
“May I have
a word with you? I hate to interrupt your time here with your friends but you
will see them later in the common room so if we may have that chat now?”
Ron and
Harry looked at each other with worried looks. Dumbledore was going to ask
Hermoine all the difficult questions, the ones, even as her friend that they
wouldn’t.
The door
swung open and Hermoine found herself in a smaller, quieter office that had no
fireplace, thus no interruptions.
“I use this
mostly, only when the other entrance is activated do I go to it. Fawkes and I
prefer this to the bigger one. So much more cozy, candy corn?”
Hermoine
waved aside the candy dish and took a seat across from Dumbledore. “I know that
you have some questions but I don’t know if I’ll be able to answer them all.”
“My dear
Miss Granger any answers that you give will help us to help save other
muggleborn witches and wizards, even the future generations. The first question
I must ask is how are they killing…murdering these families?”
Hermoine
gave a wry twist of her lips. “The irony of it is Professor is that you
yourself have one teaching classes this year.” At Dumbledore’s continued
confusion Hermoine gave a sigh. “Think Professor what is an untried tact by
Voldemort? What has he had access to but never thought of to use? When do these
attacks take place? Why is it so special?” Hermoine took great delight in
watching Dumbledore put the scrambled pieces together.
“You mean
to say that werewolves are killing people? Voldemort is using werewolves to
kill innocent people? Brilliant. But how… Miss Granger I must ask how did you
survive the attack?”
Hermoine
closed her eyes so she wouldn’t have to see Dumbledore’s sympathetic gaze. “I
was sleeping when I woke up to the sounds of my parents screaming, then
suddenly quiet. I heard the deep breathing; low low growls and I knew that
something was in the house. I guessed that my parents were already dead so I
grabbed my hand mirror from my dresser and broke it. I knew that whatever it
was was going to hear so I grabbed the largest piece of glass I could find and
just as I got a good grip on it the werewolf broke through the door. I fell
down and it pounced. That’s how I broke my wrist, or I should say it broke it
for me by stepping on it. My right hand held the broken piece of glass so as
fast as I could before it could bite me I slashed it’s throat. I knew from
reading that only silver can truly kill a werewolf, but cutting its artery
killed it temporarily allowing me to get out of the house. Since we had a pool
in the yard I jumped in to cover my scent. I knew then that that was how it was
going to follow me; while the werewolf was recovering I grabbed the pool cover
and covered the pool and myself. Even with the full moon I knew that with it’s
mind clouded it wouldn’t think of looking under the pool cover until after it
had turned back into human, by then I would be long gone. I think it wasn’t
until the milkman came the next morning and shouted if anyone was home that I
climbed out of the pool. I was so cold, and tired and upset. They took me to
the hospital where they set my wrist and treated me for hypothermia. Because I
told them I was going to be turning 18 by muggle standards in September they
decided to let me handle what to do with the estate of my parents. I knew that
the werewolf would continue on its path so I took the room at the Leaky
Cauldron because of the added security. No werewolf would enter where there
were so many witches and wizards there that could harm it, maybe even kill it.
And so that is where I waited until school started and here I am, alive and
waiting on the edge for the werewolf to come back and finish what it started.”
Dumbledore
ran a tired hand over his face, pausing to rub his tired eyes. “You do realize
how farfetched this sounds Miss Granger. Observe it from my perspective. If
Voldemort was going to use werewolves why now? Why not years earlier?”
“Even the
most brilliant minds can overlook the most obvious answer. We muggles have a
saying ‘if you want to hide something, hide it in the most obvious place
because the most obvious place is where we look the least’. Or roughly
translated you only see what you expect to see. So you see Voldemort simply
hadn’t tho of of using such methods because most people think of werewolves as
mindless animals that can only be tamed by the use of monkshood. But what if
the werewolves in question were loyal. What if their evil hearts, and minds
contained the will to follow their masters every will.”
“Death
Eaters?”
“Exactly.
But since Voldemort didn’t expect anyone to escape there was no reason to
expect anyone to warn everyone else. I’m sure that that is all I have to tell
you Professor Dumbledore sir, and if you don’t mind I’m going to ask Pomfrey to
heal my wrist magically so that I don’t have to torment myself with trying to
scratch it with my wand.”
“Miss
Granger…”
“Professor
Dumbledore I promise you that I’m fine. I know that one day Voldemort will pay
for what he did to my family. Oh you didn’t know? I’m the only surviving
Granger out of my family, and that makes me a very rich witch, pardon the pun. I
don’t plan on do anything stupid like getting myself killed. Rest assured
Professor that I would project the image that a Head girl here at Hogwart’s
should have. And with that Professor I will dismiss myself and go to the
infirmary.”
Hermoine
quietly shut the door, which then blended back into a wall, never hinting that
there had been a door in the first place. “I may have promised that I wouldn’t
do it as a human, but as something else now that I didn’t promise.” Hermoine
whispered to herself, unaware that Remus Lupin could hear her with his
sensitive hearing.
“So
Hermoine you’ve been cursed to.” He whispered to himself, sorrow welling up at
the thought of this beautiful young schoolgirl being cursed to a fate of trying
to hide her affliction.
Little did
he know that Hermoine had no intentions of hiding it, on the contrary she was
only going to not tell people, and use every inch of her new found ‘affliction’
to its maximum potential.
