Last Chapter:
“Sod it,” Harry said to no-one and with that Harry turned and walked out of the kitchen, he climbed the stairs and went into his room, shutting the door behind him before falling into his bed and pulling the covers up over his head, ready to catch up on some much needed sleep.
Chapter 2: The Old Crowd.
Harry woke with a jump. ‘What was that?’
Another loud pop sounded downstairs which was followed by a pair of muffled voices coming from what Harry guessed was the living room.
Harry swung his legs over the side of the bed and slowly lowered himself onto the floor, being as quiet as possible, not wanting to alert anyone to his presence. Harry pulled the drawer of his bedside table open slowly and grabbed his wand from inside.
Crossing the length of the room as quietly as possible Harry ducked out of his room leaving the door half-open. Harry himself was shaking he didn’t know who this was it could be a bunch of death eaters, that thought made him want to run back into his room and hide under his covers but his Gryffindor courage prevailed and he was soon at the top of the stairs.
Harry slowly and quietly tiptoed down the stairs his wand held tightly in his right hand as he slowly moved from one stair to the next, careful to make any sound that would alert the deatheaters to his being there.
The hall light was off so it was fairly dark, all the windows and doors into the hallway were shut with the curtains drawn. Somebody didn’t want anyone to know they were here. ‘How am I supposed to get rid of a load of crazed fuckin death eaters?’
Harry shrugged the thought out of his head and instead fixed his attention on the crack of light seeping out from under the living room door. Harry’s mind began to race about what was behind that door, hundreds different spells flying in and out of his head.
Harry was so mixed up in these sudden thoughts that he was halfway through stepping onto the next stair when another loud pop startled him ‘They are all apparating in‘.
Harry missed the next step and his footing, his wand dropping from his hand as his arms flailed wildly, trying to find something to stop himself from falling. Somehow one of his hands managed to find the safety of the banister and he grabbed hold of it, but the sudden change of momentum made him fall back in the opposite direction and he landed on the stairs behind him with a loud thump.
The voices in the living room stopped immediately, and Harry held his breath. He had no way of protecting himself as he didn’t have his wand and couldn’t see where it had fallen to. He had nowhere to run to as the front and back doors were locked so there was no way he could get out of the house.
He glanced upwards towards the upstairs landing and his half-open bedroom door, there was no point going up there, there wasn’t exactly anywhere to hide.
A gasp hitched in his throat and he gulped audibly, fear evident in his eyes as the living room door creaked slowly open. Whoever it was, was being very quiet about it. Harry was about to cry out when his eyes fell onto the silhouetted figure of none other than…Remus Lupin.
Harry let out a sigh of relief as the scream vanished from his throat as it gushed out in a sob. Harry buried his head in his hands in an attempt to stop himself from shaking.
“Oh Hell. Sorry Harry, we thought you had gone out with your Aunt and Uncle, we saw them leave before.” Remus’s voice rang out into the corridor.
Harry didn’t move. So Remus whispered something to the person behind him and moved out of the doorway into the hall.
He paused for a moment as he reached out with one hand and flicked the hall light on. The door closed softly behind him. Remus moved slowly up the stairs and sat down next to Harry. Seeing how much he was shaking after a few seconds, Remus pulled Harry into a short embrace. After a bit Harry had calmed down and had stopped shaking. He pulled back from Remus muttering something about ‘being fine’ and ‘just a shock’.
Remus stared at him. Harry had grown so much over the holidays. No longer was he a boy but a young man. He had grown taller, almost reaching 6ft now, his facial features were more masculine and handsome rather than being boyish, and all that Quidditch practice had left him with a very muscular body and broad shoulders. His hair hadn’t changed much, though it was a bit longer, but as messy as ever, and his eyes, still as green as before. The emerald eyes in question were now staring back at Remus, their expression clearly confused.
Remus snapped back into reality and looked embarrassedly over to the wall on the other side of the staircase. Remus stared at the pictures of Dudley hung on the wall and was about to comment on one of them when Harry spoke.
“What are you doing here?”
Remus’s head snapped back round to face Harry, one eyebrow raised as if to say ‘isn’t it obvious’, his amber eyes beginning to glint mischievously.
“Dumbledore checking up on me again, I suppose.”
Harry sighed and rested his head against the banister his eyes closed.
“Well, yes…no. Well, both really.”
Harry reopened his eyes and raised both his eyebrows, to which Remus chuckled.
“Well we have come to check up on you.”
Harry smirked and gave Remus an I-told-you-so look. “We.” Harry turned his head round to look at the closed door.
“AND,” Remus continued rather louder than before, sensing that Harry was getting distracted.
“If you want you can come and spend the rest of the holidays at Grimmauld Place with me and Sirius, but that’s only if you want to,” Remus added as an afterthought.
Harry jumped up from the step with excitement, happiness radiating from him like a beacon, his grin widening by the second. He reached out a hand to help the older man up.
“Thanks Remus.”
And he flung his arms round the stunned werewolf unable to quell his excitement. He felt happier than he had in a long time.
“When can I leave?”
Harry started hopping from one foot to the other, which was quite a stunt considering he was still on the stairs.
“As soon as you’re ready, I guess we can leave a note for your Aunt and Uncle.”
Harry whooped and ran past Remus up to his room. This was brilliant, he thought as he pulled his trunk out from under his bed and began to empty his belongings into it. He was going to spend the rest of his holiday with his Godfather, Remus, and…
“Who else will be there?” he asked Remus who had followed him up to his room and was leaning against the doorframe in a daze.
Sirius will be glad to see him, Remus mused. He let his mind wander as he started to think of Sirius again, his friend, his lover. Harry didn’t know about them yet, but there was still time to tell him.
Remus didn’t even hear Harry speak the first time; he was too lost in his own thoughts. Harry cleared his throat making, Remus snap out of his daydream.
“Are you okay?”
Harry had stopped packing and was looking worriedly at him from where he was kneeling on the floor in front of an open trunk, in the process of emptying his schoolbooks into it.
“Yeah, uh. What was the question?” Remus gave Harry a sheepish grin.
“Who else will be there?” Harry repeated, before throwing the handful of books he had been holding into the trunk and sitting back on his haunches awaiting Remus’ answer.
“Well the Weasley’s are all there, urm Hermione, me, Sirius.” He inwardly smiled to himself at the sound of Sirius’s name. “I do believe Tonks is staying for awhile, and I’m not really sure who else most of them just come and go as they please.”
Harry had finished packing, a broad grin plastered on his face as he stood up dusting off his robes.
“Finished?” Remus asked, smiling at Harry’s eagerness.
“Finished.” Harry repeated triumphantly.
Remus pulled out his wand and shrunk Harry’s trunk, moving into the room to pick it up. As he entered the room the first thing he noticed was how cramped it was, there was barely enough room to fit the both of them in.
“Grab Hedwig,” he reminded Harry, who was about to walk off without her.
“Oh yeah.” He grabbed Hedwigs cage from his desk and grinned apologetically at the white owl, who hooted back at him in a forgiving way. Harry pushed his way passed Remus into the hallway, waiting as his trunk was deposited into Remus’s pocket before making his way downstairs. Just before Harry got to the living room door he stopped abruptly, causing Remus to plough into the back of him.
“Sorry. What’s up?”
“My wand. I dropped it around here before.”
“Looking for this?” Tonks’ head appeared ‘round the living room door, her hair a rather ghastly shade of orange. Harry grinned; she could almost be mistaken for a Weasley with that hair colour.
“Wotcher Harry.” She waved Harry’s wand in front of his face.
“Thanks Tonks.” He managed to seize his wand from the waving hand and gave her a large grin before he pushed past her into the living room to see who else Remus had brought with him.
“Harry!” Arthur Weasley face came into view, his thin red hair smoothed down across his head, an expansive grin spread across his face as he saw the raven-haired boy that he considered a son.
“It’s good to see you my boy.”
He caught Harry in a swift one-armed hug, before he pulled quickly back.
“How have you been?”
“Alright, I guess.” Harry shrugged his shoulders. It was clear to everyone in the room everything had not been ‘alright’, and that was partly why they were here in the first place, but no one said anything. Sirius would talk to him about it later.
Harry was grinning again, his mouth muscles aching a bit from all the sudden smiling at his rescuers. He had to admit it was the first time he had smiled in weeks. It felt good, to be happy again.
“Well, I think that’s everything.” Remus stepped into the small living room, smiling, and placed the envelope he had in his hand marked “Vernon and Petunia Dursley” onto the wooden coffee table in the centre of the room and reached into his robe pocket.
Harry looked oddly at the coffee table there was something not quite right about it; one of the legs looked like it had been shortened a good few inches. Remus, on seeing Harry’s bemused look pulled a small pouch out of his pocket and winked at him, successfully distracting him.
“Shall we get going then?” He offered the pouch, which Harry guessed contained Floo powder to Tonks, that mischievous glint reappearing in his amber eyes.
“Ladies first, Nymphadora.” He grinned wickedly and upon noticing Harry and Arthur trying to stifle their laughter unsuccessfully Tonks frowned, then pouted, and took a pinch from Remus’ pouch and strolled to the fire, sticking her tongue out at the trio.
“12 Grimmauld Place!” A flash of green light and bit of smoke and she was gone.
Remus handed the pouch to Harry and steered him towards the fireplace.
“But then how are you going to get back?” Harry said gesturing to the pouch in his hand.
“We’ll apparate. Me and Arthur have a few things to take care of before we leave.”
“Okay,” Harry relied sensing the mischief in Remus voice. Whatever they did Harry sincerely hoped that his Aunt and Uncle spent the next few weeks of the holidays clearing it up.
With that Harry took a pinch of green powder from Remus’s pouch, stepped towards the fireplace, and grimaced. He hadn’t travelled by Floo powder a lot, but what he had done he hadn’t liked. It was dirty and it made him feel dizzy, and he always fell out the other end. He wrinkled his nose and stepped into the fire grate.
“12 Grimmauld Place.”
The world began to spin in a green hazed, fireplaces flashed before him making him feel sick with the speed with which they came and went before his eyes.
The next thing Harry knew he was flying headfirst out of the kitchen fireplace in Grimmauld Place, landing on the floor with a loud and rather painful thump.
“Harry!” Sirius’s voice cried out as soon as soon as he saw his godson fly out of the fireplace. Harry soon felt himself lifted off his feet and encased in a pair of tight arms.
“I can’t breath,” Harry managed to gasp.
“Sorry,” Sirius said, loosening his hold and pulling back so he could get a good look at his Godson. Harry inhaled sharply as his lungs were free to work again and laughed as Sirius’s smiling face came into view.
“Hello to you to.” Harry grinned as Sirius pulled him towards him again for another hug, to which Harry was able to return with fervour.
Harry laughed against Sirius’s shoulder and as he did loud footsteps sounded from the hall stairs. Harry pulled out of the embrace and turned to the door. Sirius tousled Harry’s hair as he stood, waiting, for the arrival of his two best friends.
“MUDBLOOD IN MY HOUSE, I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT, SIRIUS YOU ARE A DISGRACE, DIRTYING THE FAMILY NAME WITH...” The rest of her speech was muffled as Remus and Arthur, who had apparated in whilst Harry and Sirius were mid-hug, pulled the curtains on either side of Sirius’s mothers portrait across the painting.
“Stupid woman.” Harry gave a small snort as he heard Sirius mumble behind him.
The kitchen door suddenly swung open with an almighty bang and Ron and Hermione ran through the door and down the kitchen steps, eyes wide, grins broad both of them obviously happy to see Harry again.
“HARRY.” The both cried out simultaneously. Hermione opened her arms, but they both stopped instantly as they caught the look on Harry’s face. Apparently he wasn’t as pleased to see them as they were him.
They both stood frozen at the bottom of the kitchen stairs, their eyes were wide but now no longer in happiness but in shock and the grins had disappeared from their faces leaving looks of confusion etched onto their features.
Both Ron and Hermione stood facing other Harry, giving each other a small glance before turning back to Harry. Harry’s eyes were dark with anger he stood silently glaring icily at the two, knowing saying nothing would make them feel worse.
After a few minutes of deathly silence Hermione spoke up.
“H- H- Harry, what’s wrong?”
