Two days passed. Kitara's schedule went on as usual, but she was disturbed by how often images of her encounter with Draco crept into her thoughts. It was not because he was handsome, or at least not entirely becaof tof that. He puzzled her. No one had anything good to say about the Slytherin, yet he had been almost kind to her. Kitara had a gift for understanding why people behaved the way they did, and she sensed deep currents in Draco that intrigued her. Yet she was disturbed to find herself dwelling so much on a person the entire school seemed to despise.
Oliver did not notice her distraction, but then, Oliver wouldn't. He was charming, in his own awkward way, and more than pretty, he whe was so obsessed with Quidditch that he rarely had a thought for anything else. Each day that passed without him saying something made her feel more and more estranged from him. Finally Kitara decided she needed to talk with him. She had no intention of mentioning Draco, but things with Oliver had been difficult for some time now, and she desperately needed him to pay more attention to her.
It was just beginning to get dark when she made her way down to Quidditch Pitch, where Oliver had called a late practice. She found most of the Griffyndor team preparing to leave, but she caught Fred Weasley's sleeve and asked where Oliver was. Fred pointed to the locker room.
"Bloke's drawing up whole new strategies in there. Tear him away from it, if you can, Kit. It's not healthy."
Kitara stuck her head in the locker room door. "Oliver?" she called.
"Here, Kit!"
She made her way through the locker room until she found him, sitting on a bench and drawing furiously on a small chalkboard. He looked up when she drew near, giving her a grin. She smiled back weakly.
"Just perfecting a few new tactics here. Take a look at this."
Kitara stared at the mess of arrows and circles, uncomprehending. "Mmmm. Brilliant," she said. Oliver smiled again, kissing her on the cheek.
"They'll never see this one coming. Slytherin knows their captain is bigger and stronger than anyone else. An attack on him is the last thing they'll expect. And with Angelina over here—well, it worked against Ravenclaw last week. Then again, Ravenclaw hasn't got half the speed that Slytherin does- oh, sorry, love."
Kitara waved a dismissive hand at the insult to her House, beginning to think she shouldn't have come. She tried to get a word in edgewise.
"Oliver, we should do something."
Oliver paused and raised an eyebrow at her. "Do something?" he repeated.
"You know," she pressed, "go out. Talk."
He was still for a minute, then his teeth showed in a brilliant grin. "Of course."
Kitara almost laughed with relief. At least he could ignore Quidditch occasionally.
But Oliver's voice interrupted her brief moment of hope. "Maybe next week, after the game with Slytherin. I can show you my ideas for next year's uniforms."
Kitara's heart sank. She was quiet for a minute, then gave him a small, sad smile that he didn't see. "Alright, Oliver. Goodnight, then."
"Goodnight, lovely," he said, blowing her a kiss without looking up from his chalkboard. Kitara sighed and went back outside.
She caught up with teasleasley twins as they headed back through the main doors of the castle.
"Couldn't get anything out of him, eh?" George asked. Kitara shook her head.
"No worries, Kit. He'll be better once the match with Slytherin's over," Fred chimed in. They reached a fork in the hallway, and the twins headed to the right, calling their goodbyes over their shoulders. Kitara turned toward the Ravenclaw tower, but she hadn't taken more than a few steps before a shadow crossed her path.
"Wandering the halls a bit late, aren't we, now?" The drawling voice made her jump. Draco stepped into the light, smiling at her.
She rolled her eyes and kept walking. He fell in beside her.
"What's the matter, little dragon, not feeling very social this evening?"
"Don't call me that," Kitara snapped.
"Why not? I think it suits you quite well."
Kitara rounded on him. "How the devil would you know what suits me, Malfoy?"
Draco held up his hands. "Easy! I'm just making conversation."
"And what exactly did I do that made you think I would want your conversation?"
Draco looked put out, and anger crept into his silken voice. "Oh, pardon me," he said sarcastically. "I'm sure Wood is just smashing to talk to."
Kitara's eyebrows rose dangerously, but she couldn't deny that he had a good point. "What do you know about Oliver, anyway?" she asked, not liking the sulk in her tone.
The blonde Slytherin smiled a little, seeing that he had hit a nerve. "It doesn't take a genius to see he doesn't listen. I have ears, you know. And a brain."
She eyed him up and down, again trying to gage his sincerity. "Look, Draco," she said at last, "I'm sorry I ran into you in the hall the other day. It was an accident. An accident. It was not some strange way of trying to make a new friend. I don't need your sympathy, and I don't want it."
Draco was taken aback. "Sympathy? Bugger all, I don't feel sorry for you. I'm only trying to be nice."
"Well, it's hardly your forte, from what I hear."
"Do you always listen to everything other people tell you?"
The question caught Kitara off guard, and she was quiet for a minute, not sure of how to reply. Draco continued, "Or, wait, let me guess, you rely solely on the word of those Weasel twins and the other bloody Gryffindors. n't n't imagine you're getting the unbiased truth from Potter and his gang."
Kitara was incensed. She was a Ravenclaw, but ever since she had started dating Oliver, most of her friends were Gryffindors.
"Now see here, Draco, I won't have you insulting my friends!"
Draco's grin took on a nasty edge. "Oh, a bit protective, are we? Don't tell me you're a member of the Potter fan club."
Kitara refused to rise to his bait. She made her voice cold. "You're not the dragon you think you are, Malfoy. Always playing at being tough, always putting others down. You don't fool me. I know what you really are."
Draco simply stared her, mouth working in a combination of shock and fury. Before either of them could break the silence, a figure materialized out of the gloom.
"Miss Davidson. Mister Malfoy."
"Professor McGonagall," Kitara said respectfully. Draco was still gaping at her and didn't say anything.
The Professor looked down her nose at them, her tone severe and precise. "Curfew in a few minutes, students. I would suggest you find your dormitories."
They nodded hastily. As McGonagall continued down the hallway, Kitara rushed off, hoping to escape before Draco could say anything else. Only silence followed her, and when she risked a glance behind her, the hallway was empty.
