Down & Dirty
Part 2
Professors and students milled outside the staff lounge, waiting for someone to unlock the doors. Hermione was apprehension, wondering if something was up with the Death Eaters, who were still on the loose after Voldemort's demise. Professor Snape paced back and forth, glaring at anyone who accidentally walked in his path. Pansy, leaned against the wall, scowling. Professor McGonagall and Flitwick were in deep conversation, while Hooch discussed something with Professor Trelawney who looked as if she had just woken up.
"Do you know what's up?" Justin asked Hermione nervously. He had never been involved with the trio outside of classes, and to tell the truth Hermione intimidated him. Not only with her looks, she had grown quite lovely over the years, but also with the way she held herself, confident and secure in who she was.
"Sorry, I am in the dark, as are the rest," she said, glancing towards the others.
After a few more minutes, a click announced the door being unlocked and a smiling Sirius opened the door with a brief bow.
"Ah, welcome." Sirius Black ushered the guests into the room, as if welcoming them to a formal dinner party. "Miss Granger, lovely as usual," he said, taking her arm and sitting her at a large table in the center of the room. Comfortable chairs were placed around, as were name cards.
"What is this?" asked Professor Trelawney, in her nasal sounding voice, picking up the name card. "I was under the impression this was a serious matter, otherwise I would not have left my crystal gazing."
"Yes, that would be a tragedy should you miss some answer to the universe," Snape remarked dryly. "Though the point is well taken, Black lets get on with this, I am sure we all more important things to do." As if, giving Trelawney a withering glare.
"As acting Headmistress, Minerva you do the honors," Sirius said keeping his face impassive, handing her a rolled up parchment. Professor McGonagall stood up, unrolling the parchment that Sirius had handed her. Those around the table gaped as her face went through several shades of red, turning finally to a bright purple. Eyes bugling she turned to face Sirius, who looked the picture of innocence. Remus had the decency to turn bright red himself.
"Minerva what is it?" Professor Hooch asked, hurrying to her side. Scanning the parchment over McGonagall's shoulder, Professor Hooch doubled over with laughter.
"For Merlin's sake." Snape growled, leaning over the table to snatch the parchment away. His scowl deepened until his eyebrows were knitted together.
"Go on Severus," Professor Flitwick urged. "Is it bad news?"
"The worst," Snape said acidly, and began to read, "Professors Black and Lupin welcome you to Hogswart's first Down and Dirty challenge. The rules are simply this, play to win, have fun and no leaving until the game is complete. With permission of Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster. The man has totally gone nutters," Snape finished, flinging the scroll on the table.
Professor Hooch sat back down wiping the tears from her eyes, giving Black a mischievous grin. She knew all too well about the game, having been a participant many a night when at university.
"What, pray tell," Professor McGonagall had finally found her voice, though it was high pitched and squeaky, "are you two, juvenile, overgrown—" She seemed to have lost her voice again, but Snape finished for her. "Idiots, imbeciles, misbegotten sons of jackals, thinking of?" His eyes flashed dangerously, and both Pansy and Justin slid lower in their seats, hoping to avoid the storm gathering around Snape.
Hermione grimaced, as she saw Black, who too looked as if he was ready for a fight. "What is Down and Dirty?" she asked quickly hoping to draw their attention to herself.
"Just a simple game of cards—" Remus began, but Professor's Hooch's laughter interrupted him as Snape's retort.
"Simple, my arse!" he shouted at him, for he too had been subjected to the game during university. "I do believe you are completely mad, and to include students in this is unbearable!"
"They are of age," Remus said quietly, putting a restraining hand on Sirius as he started to rise. He was afraid this would happen.
"I for one, refuse to stay here another minute," announced Professor Trelawney, rising and gliding over to the door. It was locked and she fumbled around looking for the latch. Finally she pulled a wand from her voluminous sleeves and tried to magic it open. Nothing happened.
Holding her head in her hand, Professor Hooch began laughing again. "You can't leave Sybil, its part of the game. Once begun, we are doomed,,," she cackled again, "to play to the end."
"Correct," stated Lupin, "no magic will work in this room, except for that of the game."
"But we haven't started anything yet." Hermione said, confused.
"Shall we tell them?" Sirius asked looking at Remus.
"Tell us what?" Severus growled.
"Well," Remus said quietly, trying not to smile, "once you touched the invitations that were at dinner, well, you see, you are under a magical contract to play."
If possible Snape's scowl grew. "And if I still refuse?"
"You really don't want to know." Remus a little shamefacedly.
"Try me."
Remus stood up and walked around to whisper in Snape's ear. Severus paled and Remus returned to his seat, smiling
"Severus?" McGonagall looked at him apprehensively. He shook his head. "Don't ask and you REALLY don't want to know." He said defeatedly.
Professor Flitwick sat quietly through all this, twirling his thumbs, though he too had a flush to his cheeks.
"Well then," Sirius said standing, "first order of business," he waved his hand and drinks appeared before each participant, "is a little refreshment and introduction. While in this room we are all adults," he stated emphasizing this towards Snape, who crossed his arms and glared at him. "First name basis, and for tonight," he said glancing at the students, "we are not your professors."
Snape snorted and McGonagall started to speak, but picked up her drink instead. Downing the Irish whiskey and soda quickly, coughing as it burned her throat, she closed her eyes wondering when she had lost control of this. If the game lived up to the rumors she had heard about it, she would have Albus' head in a platter when he returned.
The other professors reached for their drinks to follow suit. "Delicious," Hooch announced as she drunk the sloe gin fizz. Snape swirled the brandy in his glass before following suit, downing it as Minerva had done. If he had to tolerate this nonsense he planned on being totally drunk. Professor Flitwick took a swig from a large stein that held dark ale, while Professor Trelawney sipped a foamy pink concoction.
"I wasn't aware of your preferences," Sirius said his eyes on Hermione, as she picked up a glass of dark red wine, that Pansy had also. Tasting it, she found it sweet but cloying. She smiled at him and nodded her approval. "And Justin," he said turning to the boy, " I hope scotch is alright."
Justin flushed and tried to down the shot of scotch as Sirius had done. He choked and sprayed the table, as Pansy thumped him on the back. Even McGonagall sniggered at this, downing her second glass. Apparently the drinks refilled magically.
"Now then, for the schematics of the games," Remus said. "As I said before, it is a simple card game similar to the Muggle game of poker." Justin's face brightened at this, he knew how to play poker, and he often played with his cousins over the holidays. "Combinations of cards to make the highest scoring hand, pairs, three of a kind, four of a kind and so forth. Five cards will be dealt to each player followed by three cards face down. The player must decide which card to lay down and replace with one of the three to make the best hand."
"Should be a cinch for you Sybil," Minerva said sweetly, though her eyes flashed, "with your all seeing eye."
Trelawney just grunted at her.
"Its really pretty simple and straightforward.." but Remus was interrupted by Snape's drawling voice.
"Straightforward, except for the stakes."
Justin frowned. What were the stakes? Usually his cousins played for sweets. He hoped it wasn't money.
"Er, well yes, that's true," Remus said flushing.
Giggling, Freyda encouraged him to continue. "Yes do tell us about the stakes."
Hermione raised her eyebrows. Did she just imagine the sultry tone in Professor Hooch's voice?
"The stakes change for each round." Black said grinning.
The table was silent, each waiting for the other to ask the grinning Sirius. Justin finally gained the courage to ask. "Professor Black, er, Sirius, what is the stake for the first round?"
"Well," he said, mischievously, "Have you ever heard of strip poker?"
