Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 2: Discovery
Dear Professor Snape,
I wanted to thank you for the cruelty you exacted on me while a student at Hogwarts. It wasn't until the last month of term that I realized why you were so unkind and heartless towards me. I realized you were only making me stronger. Preparing me for the harsh world outside Hogwarts. Not one teacher has ever treated me the way you did, and I wish they had. Receiving perfect scores on my N.E.W.T.'s was phenomenal compensation for my diligence in obtaining your respect. I doubt I would have tried as hard if it weren't for my desire to impress you.
I know that you understand me better than any of my friends, and we've never even had a civil conversation. Ironic, isn't it? We are alike in many ways. We both stop nothing short of our goals and we don't let anything stand in the way of obtaining those goals. We both keep to ourselves because we don't find anyone interesting to converse with. No one understands us completely, except for maybe each other.
It's very hard for me to write this letter to you, knowing it probably will end up in the wastebasket as soon as you recognize the penmanship. I know if I tried to tell you this before I left, you'd only dismiss me before I could get past thank you. I hope that I haven't detained you or disturbed you. I felt compelled to tell you how I feel about you, and do feel a lot better getting it off of my chest. I hope now that Voldemort is gone, you may once again live your life to it's fullest, and finally find peace. Maybe even one day, I can peer into your eyes, and find something other than loneliness, and sorrow. For your sake, I hope I am correct.
Sincerely yours,
Hermione Granger
Severus entered her room, trying very hard not to notice the flimsy material of her nightgown. "Would you care for a drink, Severus?" She asked, already pulling two goblets from the cabinet. She made her way back into the parlor, but tripped over a bag she hadn't unpacked and hit her foot on table. "Shit that hurts!" He went to her side, and helped her to the sofa.
"Thank you." He sat down on the sofa beside her, much to her surprise. "I hope wine suits you. I haven't had a chance to get anything else. I must do that soon. I've found that a person can drown their sorrows in a good bottle of wine much easier than Firewhiskey. It tends to have horrible after effects."
"I agree." He wondered just how much of the past four years she had spent alone, and drunk. Quite a bit from the way she talked. He couldn't blame her though, when he thought about the nights he'd spent in his chambers draining a good bottle of scotch. "About your letter. I know that I sent you a reply, but I don't think it did justice to convey the feelings I have about you. You are truly remarkable, in every aspect, and I have felt honored to have been a professor of yours."
"Please, you're making me blush." She sipped on her wine, letting him continue. It wasn't everyday Severus Snape felt compelled to share his feelings, unless they were less than pleasant.
"I'm sorry, but I must tell you. Ever since the first day I had you in class I knew you were going to be a thorn in my side. Especially when you set my robes on fire. That was a first, I must admit." He suppressed a little chuckle, as he continued. "I had never seen anyone quite like you. So determined to learn everything and anything you could. Your thirst for knowledge is overwhelming. I didn't know muggleborns could be as hungry to learn as full blooded children. You proved me wrong. I only snapped at you because I was angry my own students weren't as fascinated with potions as you were. Sometimes, I wondered why I even bothered with the lot. I think I was more lenient on them because of the stigma they had to endure. Being a Slytherin, meant that either your parents are or were death eaters, and you must be going to follow their path. I felt compelled to protect them."
"I understand your favoritism. You don't have to explain your teaching methods to me Severus. I know first handed what they are like, and I wouldn't change them in any way. I am sorry for setting your robes on fire, I thought you were trying to hurt Harry."
"I know that, and I have long since forgiven you. But, when you solved my potions enigma in less than fifteen minutes, no less, I knew you were going to be one of, if not the brightest witches of this generation. But I still can't figure out why you thought we were so similar. Had I given you any indication that we were? I thought that my meanness and cruelty would have overshadowed anything you might have identified with."
"Well, I didn't only see you in class. There were times I saw you in the library and waited for you to leave. I'd carefully watch the books you read, and often read them myself. You are partly responsible for my extensive personal library. I was fascinated by most of them. I disliked only a few."
Severus laughed at the thought of Hermione Granger stalking him at school. " You stalked me?"
"No, I just thought you were interesting, that's all." She shifted her position on the sofa so she was facing him. Her foot was sore where she hit it. She began rubbing her foot, trying to massage the bruise that already formed there. "Oh, dear!" Severus took one look at her foot, and demanded she go to the infirmary.
"You must let Poppy prepare a salve for that. It could get infected, and it could be broken."
"Honestly Severus. I am fine. I have had many bruises. It is just tender that is all."
"Do you have any ice?"
"Yes, in the freezer. But please, you don't have to fuss over it. I'll be fine really." She was milking this for all it's worth. She had Severus to herself, alone. What more could she want? His arms around me, tracing my body with his elegant fingers, those lush lips pressed firmly against mine. He went to the kitchen and transfigured a saucer into an ice bag. He then put the ice in and brought it back to Hermione. She reached out for it, but he took her foot into his lap instead and held the ice pack firmly in place. She was surprised to have her foot in his lap. Although it felt very nice, his body heat radiating up through her leg, but the ice was very cold.
"That's cold Severus!"
"It's supposed to be Hermione. It will help stop the swelling so I can perform a deflating charm. You will have the bruise though."
"Thank you Severus." She glanced at the clock on the mantle and it said 12:30. She really hadn't noticed it was this late. They'd been talking for almost two and a half hours. It seemed like only minutes. She casually changed the subject to their personal lives.
"Why don't you go home during the holidays Severus?"
"The only time I leave Hogwarts is for the month of July. I dread going to that creepy mansion I inherited from my father."
"Oh. Spending so much time at Hogwarts must make it hard for you to pursue outside interests." She kept on fishing for information, hoping he would confirm her thoughts of him being alone.
"I have no interest in pursuing any interests outside of Hogwarts. There are no offers, nor have there been for a very long time." Hermione felt a pang of sadness in her heart. But quickly recovered realizing there would be no competition for Severus' affection. "I spend my days here, peacefully. Until the start of term, that is." He removed the ice pack and began massaging her foot. He began to wonder why she hadn't married yet. As he was offering her very personal information, he thought she wouldn't mind offering some of her own. "Why haven't you settled yet Hermione?"
"There hasn't been anyone that I would even remotely consider." What makes you think she'd want you Severus? The annoying voice in his head had returned. He told it to shut up, and resumed his interrogation.
"Why not Weasley? I always knew he fancied you."
"Must you really ask that question Severus? We both know Ron means well, but he isn't what I am looking for. What I desire in a man."
"What do you find desirable Hermione?" The question spilled out before he could think.
"You really want to know Severus?"
"Yes, I think I do." His massaging of her foot was now focused on her ankle. Neither one seemed to notice, nor care if they did.
"Well, think of everything you are," she knew she was giving herself away, but she didn't care. Hermione never had much patience, especially when concerning her love life.
"You're really only getting to see who I am. How do you know I am what you desire?" She sat up straight, leaning over to him, only a few inches separating their lips.
"I have known for four years, perhaps longer. I don't need you to tell me everything about you Severus. I don't want know everything about you. Everyone deserves some amount of privacy. I do however, want to know everything you are willing to share with me. What you're willing to show me." Her breathing became ragged, and her last sentence was barely above a whisper. Her heart was racing and it seemed like so long since she'd felt this way. She actually could remember. Not since the night she had lost her virginity to Harry. And that was almost eight years ago. God, has it really been that long?
Severus' raspy voice broke her out of her trance, "Show you, huh?" He didn't wait for an answer. He pressed his lips against hers, and the world around them faded away. He had never felt such desire in his forty years. They felt a magic all of their own. Her hands trembled as she clutched his arms, bracing herself against his heated body. He snaked his arm behind her head, and pressed her back down to the sofa. Their tongues delicately pressed into the other, memorizing every part of their mouths. Hermione felt fire coursing through her veins, stimulating every nerve in her entire body. Severus was harder than he had ever been, and if not for embarrassment, he would have come in his pants as soon as he touched her. She affected him like no other before. He wondered why her? Then quickly chastised himself. She was the epitome of everything he had desired for so long, needed for so long, dreamt about for so long. He realized she was his missing link. Her love, her lust, and her passion. For the first time in his life, he felt thoroughly fulfilled. He could spend eternity with her arms wrapped tightly around him.
His loin was now firmly pressed between her silky smooth thighs. Her nightgown had crept up, revealing a very tiny pair of pale blue, lace panties beneath. She released his lips, and he nibbled gently on her earlobe. He placed his hand on her inner thigh, slowly caressing the velvety skin underneath. She felt his erect member pressing against her thigh, and she gasped as he placed two fingers beneath her panties. She was very moist, and Severus' erection throbbed painfully hard against his boxers. He had a hard time comprehending he was the cause of her lust, of her arousal. He captured her mouth with his again, and they heard a very unwanted knock at the door.
"Just ignore them, maybe they'll go away," he whispered while placing soft kisses behind her ear. She had latched onto his neck, sucking perhaps a tad bit too hard. The knocking only grew louder, and more persistent.
"I-can't-ignore-them-Severus," she rasped between kisses.
"Why not?" He asked trying to understand why she felt compelled to answer her door, instead of making love to him. He knew they were moving way too fast, but he couldn't stop himself. Her body felt too good pressed against his.
"What if it is an emergency?"
"If it were, Albus would come to you before he'd send anyone else at this ungodly hour."
"Hermione, please answer the door. I am looking for Severus." He heard his former friend say as he pulled himself off of her. She straightened her gown, and grabbed her robe from the chair near the fireplace.
"This is for the best, Severus. Honestly."
"I know Hermione. I doubt I could have stopped if we weren't interrupted."
"I know I couldn't have. We have plenty of time, love." She smiled reassuring him she wasn't going anywhere.
"Fix your hair Hermione." Her ponytail was crooked and her bangs were a mess. She ran a hand through her hair and secured her ponytail once again just as Severus opened the door. "Whatever this is Albus---it better be good," he said as he came face to face with Albus, and the last two people on earth he'd ever want to see while in this situation. Remus Lupin and a very poorly looking Sirius Black.
"I assure you I wouldn't interrupt if it weren't a dire emergency. However, I didn't know you were here until you opened the door. I thought Hermione might know where you were."
"What is the emergency Albus, and why on earth are these two here?" Severus was clearly losing his patience and Hermione feared for the intruders.
"I'm sorry Severus, but Sirius needs you to make him an antidote for Moonseed Berries. I tried to tell him, but he wouldn't listen to me. He cannot stop throwing up, and I am beginning to worry about him. I gave him a mild acid reducer for his stomach, but I don't know how to brew the antidote for them.
"There isn't one." Severus was toying with them for their intrusion and he was going to punish them.
"What?" They said in unison.
"There-isn't-one." He repeated stressing every syllable.
"There has to be. I can't stay like this."
"Oh, really? I consider it improvement on your looks." Hermione couldn't suppress her laughter any longer. She knew there was an antidote, she had to give it to Ron a few years back. He'd ate them before he realized what they were.
"Why are you laughing Hermione?" Remus asked.
"I'm sorry Severus. I tried to play along, but I can't. He looks too pitiful."
"Fat lot of help you are! Of course there is an antidote. Come to the dungeons. However, you will not quit vomiting. You must get them out of your system one way or the other."
"How long will it last?" Sirius asked, looking like he could vomit again very soon.
"The effect of the berries should wear off in about twelve hours after you take the antidote." Severus turned to Hermione. "Are you coming with us?"
"Uh, no. I think it is best if I stay here. I'll see you at breakfast tomorrow. We can begin working on the potions for Poppy then."
They all said their goodnights, and Remus and Sirius followed him down to the dungeons. Dumbledore headed off towards his office, and Hermione went to take a cold shower.
