* Chapter One *
~ A Changed Woman ~
Sunlight streamed unyieldingly through a window somewhere in Great Britain. It fell upon the sleeping form of a lovely, almost seventeen year old girl. All too soon the young woman woke to an exceedingly loud purr and a cold, wet nose in her ear. Pushing the furry alarm away she looked at the clock on her nightstand, the green numbers informing her it was 6:45 am. She slowly extricated herself from her large, four poster, cherry wood bed, stretching languorously. As she went to the bathroom, her wake up call happily padded downstairs. She returned to her bedroom and went to her cherry wood dresser where she quickly shed her pajamas and put on a warm-up suit. She loaded a backpack with things she would need at the local gym, then headed downstairs.
She dropped her bag by the front door, then went to the kitchen where the smell of sausage and French toast permeated the air. “Good Morning Mum!” she said happily as she went about setting the table and pouring orange juice. A blurry eyed gentleman entered the kitchen then and sat heavily at the table. “Good morning Dad!” the girl said, kissing him on the cheek and setting a glass of juice in front of him.
“Are you going to the gym as usual today dear?” her mother asked, eyeing her daughter’s clothing as she set the plates of food on the table.
“Yes, I’m meeting Tina, Joey and Trent there. We’re probably going to the club later.” the girl replied, helping herself to some sausage.
“Just don’t stay out too late.” her father said.
“I won’t.” she smiled. The family continued talking about their plans for the day as they finished their breakfast. Soon the girl began gathering dirty dishes, but her mother took them from her.
“Run along now dear. You don’t want to be late meeting your friends.” her mother said, shooing her out the door.
“Thanks mum. I’ll see you later!” She grabbed her bag as she left the house and jogged up the street.

“Ready for the pool?” Tina asked after a couple of hours of working out. The small group of friends had just finished the intense exercise regimen they did every Saturday since the beginning of summer. They all agreed that it was indeed time to go swimming and they split into pairs to go to their respective locker rooms.
“When are you going back to school again?” Tina asked, pulling her shirt over her head.
“September first. But I might be leaving sooner to stay with some friends from school. I’ll let you know so we can go out one more time before I leave though.” she answered while putting her swimsuit on.
“You better.” was the somewhat muffled reply as Tina riffled through her bag. “You going tonight?” was asked as she stood back up triumphantly, suit in hand.
“I wouldn’t miss it.” The two girls then headed for the pool where they met the boys.

“I’ll see you guys at eight!” the girl said, waving as she headed for home.
The young woman had gone through some changes the year before, but nobody really noticed as her school robes hid them quite well. This summer, though, had changed her even more. She had gotten herself a summer job at a muggle department store, for some extra money, and she had started working out with friends from work. Her legs were quite shapely due to the walk to and from work and jogging every morning, and her arms as well due to lifting boxes to stock shelves on a daily basis and from lifting weights as well. She had always been slender, and now her petite build held her newly acquired curves quite nicely. Her bushy brown hair had finally tamed down to beautiful curls that cascaded softly to her waist and held golden highlights from being outdoors with the friends she had made at work.
Making new friends and discovering her new found maturity made her realize that she wanted an attitude change as well. She still loved to read and learn, but she liked working out too, and especially just having fun with her friends. She had let a couple of new girlfriends take her shopping for new clothes and some make-up, and she decided to get her ears pierced after finding a pair of cute, wand shaped earrings she wanted. She had also managed to talk her parents into letting her get her belly button pierced with the stipulations that she use her own money and that it stayed covered when she was out with her parents, or if their friends came over.
She had just finished taking a shower after returning from the gym and was looking at herself critically in the mirror, examining her face for blemishes. Satisfied that none were apparent, she took the towel off her head and shook her damp curls. As she turned from her mirror, she switched off the bathroom light and the radio. Upon entering her room, she was surprised to find two owls waiting for her. A large barn owl sat regally on her desk, while another, smaller owl flew excitedly around the room hooting joyfully, followed by reproachful sounds from the larger one. The smaller owl’s behavior was quite undignified for an owl involved in the magical world.
She laughed as she untied the letter from the barn owl. “Thank you. You don’t have to listen to him anymore, you can go now.” The owl hooted once more in irritation, then swooped gracefully out the window.
She looked up at the other owl and sighed. “Pig! Come here Pig! Let me have my letter.” The owl stopped long enough to let her get the letter, then flew around the room again, finally settling down when she brought a dish of water from her bathroom. The girl then settled down at her large, cherry wood desk to read her letters.

~ A Lost Soul ~
An attractive seventeen year old boy groaned and pulled the sheets up over his head to block out the invading sunlight. When mother nature refused to give up he sighed and got out of bed. He was not looking forward to the day. It was always the same. He slowly went to his mahogany dresser and pulled out a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. After getting dressed, he made his way down to the dining room. The smell of waffles and bacon wafted up to him, making his mouth water. As he reached the bottom of the stairs, he heard the voices of his mother and father. It sounded like they were arguing … again. He took a deep breath, pasted a fake smile on his face and entered the dining room.
“Good morning!” he said with false cheer.
“Morning dear.” his mother said as he gave her a kiss on the cheek. His father just nodded as he sat next to him. A house elf bustled in with a pitcher of pumpkin juice and filled his glass. He put some waffles on his plate, drowning them in strawberries and whipped cream.
“What are your plans for today dear?” his mother asked.
“After breakfast I thought I’d go flying. Then I’ll probably work out.”
His father then spoke up. “We need to talk about your initiation.” Before the boy could answer, his mother did.
“What?! He still has a year of school. He can’t go now.” With that, the argument began, as usual. He quietly finished his breakfast, then went to get his broom.

A couple of hours later the young man put his broom away and stormed up the stairs to his room. His light blue eyes flashed as he thought about the conversation he just had with his father. He was tired of the arguing. His father wanted a commitment NOW. His mother argued that he needed to finish school first. Frankly, he didn’t want to make a commitment at all. But short of running away, there was no getting out of it. He felt lost.
He wished there was someone he could confide in. He had many friends, his platinum blond hair and well defined muscles made him quite the ladies man, and guys just didn’t want to get on his bad side. Unfortunately, all his friends were destined to travel the same path as he, and most were happy about it. Even if they weren’t, none of them were really the type to tell your feelings to anyway. So he did what he always did. He laid down on the bench and lowered the bar to his chest. His head swam with angry thoughts as he pushed the bar up, down, up, down again and again, his already six packed stomach muscles rippling.

Someone knocked on his bedroom door. “Come in.” he grunted.
“Sir, lunch is ready. Young master’s presence is requested.” a house elf said quietly.
Demanded is more like it, he thought bitterly. He sighed as he said “I need to clean up first. I’ll be down shortly.” He then went into his bathroom to take a short shower as the house elf backed quickly out the door, closing it softly on her way.
As usual, lunch was a disaster. He just ate silently as his parents argued about his future like he wasn’t even there. He couldn’t possibly say that he didn’t want to join. That would be a disgrace to the family and quickly earn him a place on the street, if not six feet under. He couldn’t even say he wanted to wait until after school, then he would be siding with his mother. This would also be unacceptable as men were supposed to stick together. So he just sat there, eating quietly, not saying a word.
When he returned to his room, an eagle owl was sitting patiently on his dark mahogany desk, waiting to deliver a letter. He untied it from the owls leg and it promptly flew away. As he settled himself down in his squishy dark blue armchair to read it, a deep black raven flew in, dropped a letter in his lap, then left as quickly as it came.

~ Boys ~
CRASH!!!
“Blood traitors!! You dare to befoul my house!!”
Two boys sat straight up in bed at the noise coming from downstairs. They looked at each other wide eyed. “Tonks.” they both said, then flopped back down, pillows over their heads. Soon the screeching stopped and the boys drifted back to sleep. Until someone landed heavily on each of them.
“Breakfast! Mum says come now before Tonks breaks something.” and then the intruders were gone. The boys groaned, then sat up slowly, not quite ready to start their day yet. As they got dressed, two girls burst into the room.
“Oh good, you’re up. Mum said to hurry up.”
“We’re coming, we’re coming.” Then they all went downstairs, following their noses to the kitchen where breakfast was waiting. They groggily greeted everyone as they sat down and helped themselves to eggs, ham and hash browns.
“What are you kids planning for today?” the cook asked.
“Don’t know yet.” a red haired boy stated around a mouthful of food.
“Don’t talk with your mouth full!” she snapped. “The garden needs degnoming.” The kids groaned, but never-the-less they headed to the back yard when they were done eating. Not long after a large black dog joined them and ran up to one or the other of the children with a gnome in his mouth.

A couple of hours later the two boys sat intensely staring at a chess board. The dark haired boy was losing, as usual, but he was putting up a pretty good fight. Try as he might though, three moves later his red headed opponent said “Check mate!”
The dark haired boy sighed dramatically, then smiled. “I’m getting better though, right?” The other boy just laughed and nodded his head.
A woman with waist length, pin straight, blue hair came in then and informed them that lunch was ready. The boys put their chess game away and headed for the kitchen. Lunch was a bit chaotic with people popping in and out every few minutes to grab a sandwich and swap information. As the boys got up to leave an unfamiliar snowy owl swooped in and dropped six letters on the table, then swooped out just barely missing Kingsley Shacklebolt as he entered the kitchen.
When they saw the names on two of the letters, the boys just looked at each other. “Why would they be getting letters?” the dark haired boy wondered.
“Beats me.” his companion shrugged, then headed out the door with his letter. The other boy quickly followed.

~ Girls ~
“Did you hear that?” a red headed girl whispered to her blond friend as they tiptoed quietly down the stairs.
“Yeah, lets hope it isn’t … “ she was cut off by a loud crash followed quickly by incessant screaming. “… Tonks.” she finished lamely, then they rushed the rest of the way down the stairs to help pull the curtain back over the wretched portrait.
“Sorry girls, it was that ruddy umbrella stand. I just can’t seem to miss it.” Nymphadora Tonks said sheepishly. The girls headed to the kitchen to help make breakfast. Tonks wanted to help, but the cook absolutely refused to allow her near the stove.
“Can you two get the boys? I sent the twins up, but you know how they are.” The cook asked. The girls nodded and headed back upstairs. They burst into the room as the boys were pulling on their shirts.
“Oh good, you’re up. Mum said to hurry up.”
“We’re coming, we’re coming.” Then they all headed downstairs. The delectable scents wafted towards them as they entered the kitchen. Greeting everyone, they helped themselves to the food set before them. When they were almost done eating they were informed that the garden needed degnoming. They were definitely not thrilled about this chore, but none-the-less headed outside when they were done eating. Not long after, a large black dog joined them, sniffing out gnomes and bringing them to the kids to throw over the fence.

A couple of hours later the girls were in their room gossiping when there was a knock at the door. “Come in.” the blond said and Nymphadora entered, with blue hair.
“Lunch is ready.” she said, making the girls laugh as she changed her nose. Still giggling, they headed for the kitchen to join the chaos. The kids pretended to be deep in conversation while actually eavesdropping on the hurriedly whispered conversations taking place all over the kitchen.
When they had eaten enough the girls headed out of the kitchen, the red head ducking as a snowy owl flew into the room, dropped six letters, then flew out again, almost hitting Kingsley. They made their way back to the table and picked up their letters, noticing two rather odd ones. “Maybe it’s Order business.” the red head noted as they went to their room to read their letters.

~ Those with Animal Tendencies ~
“So, how do you like being a free man? You don’t have to stay cooped up here anymore.” a brown haired man asked quietly while sipping his coffee.
“It feels great. I love not having to be Padfoot. It’s more fun when I have a choice.” the black haired man grinned cheekily. He picked up his own cup as his friend informed him that Tonks should be arriving soon. As he was putting his cup back on the table, a loud crash made him jump and spill his coffee all over himself. “Bloody hell.” he muttered getting up from the table as the portrait commenced it’s usual diatribe.
After finally getting the curtains closed the two men sat heavily at the table, catching their breath. They greeted the others as people sleepily straggled into the kitchen for breakfast. The black haired man overheard the kids being told that the garden needed degnoming, then turned back to his companion.
“So, what are you planning this morning?” the brown haired man asked.
“Oh, I don’t know. I’m thinking about helping the kids.”
“Helping the kids? I thought you hated degnoming.” he said a bit incredulously.
“Yeah, well, Snuffles could use a bit of fun.” the black haired man grinned, and was suddenly a large black dog. His friend just laughed and opened the back door for him. He stood in the doorway chuckling, watching as the dog sniffed out gnomes and took them to each of the children in turn for them to throw over the fence.

“Tonks, will you go tell the kids lunch is ready?” Molly Weasley asked as she set two plates heaped with sandwiches on the table.
“Sure.” Nymphadora got up and went to find the kids. The two men each grabbed a sandwich as Molly put a pitcher of pumpkin juice down. A loud POP made the trio turn to see Alastor Mad-eye Moody standing there. He came over and grabbed a sandwich, gave them an update, then with another pop, he was gone. And so began a series of appearances, information giving and disappearances that led to a somewhat chaotic lunch hour.
The two men smiled as the young red headed girl ducked from an owl gliding in. The owl delivered six letters and left. Two boys and two girls came back to the table and found the ones addressed to them, then headed to other parts of the house, glancing curiously at the two men as they exited.
“What’s that about?” the brown haired man asked. The other man just shrugged, then looked at the two letters still on the table. He picked them up and handed one to his friend.
“Wonder what good old Albus wants with us this time.” the black haired man asked as he opened his letter, followed quickly by his friend.

~ The Dark Lord’s Decision ~
After much research on the children, a few conversations with their parents and several hours of just plain thinking, Tom Riddle had finally made his decision about who was going to be trained to be his heir. He sat at his desk, quill in hand, composing a letter to his chosen successor. “I believe I have made the wisest choice Nagini.” he said as he gave the letter to the raven that perched next to the window. “Only time will tell. If he proves unsatisfactory, then he will die. Nagini hissed approvingly at this statement as the raven winged into the darkening sky.

~ An Explosion ~
“Hand me the mug wart Annelise.” Sebastian told his wife as he kept a close eye on the bubbling cauldron in front of him. As he reached for the jar the house gave a sudden, violent shudder. He looked at Annelise, then pulled her into a tight hug. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” she answered. They pulled away from each other, then ran for the door of the dungeon lab. They were about halfway up the stairs when the house gave another shudder and the ceiling collapsed on top of them. After several more shudders the whole house was on the ground, nothing but rubble. There was no sign of life when the first Ministry of Magic official arrived on the scene. Aurors were already swarming the place when Kingsley and Nymphadora arrived. They saw Cameron Strager, the coroner, examining a couple of bodies and walked over. Nymphadora inhaled sharply at the sight of Sebastian.
“I’ve got to go send a letter to the next of kin.” Cameron said with a sigh.
“I’ll take it. I know him personally. What about the child? Where’s their daughter?” Nymphadora inquired.
“She’s all right. She was over at a friends house. An auror is taking her to the Ministry right now where her guardian can pick her up.” Cameron informed her.
“Thanks.” she said, taking the letter that he had just finished writing and apparating away. With a pop she landed just outside the great gates of Hogwarts. Taking a deep breath to fortify herself, she made her way up to the castle to find the resident Potions Master.
