Chapter
2: Another Side
Everyone had gone to bed. Hermione sat on her bed in her shared room with
Ginny, still dressed and wide awake. In a sudden spurt of energy she
jumped from the bed and tore from the room, she needed to exert
herself, run or pummel a punch bag or something. She just needed to
vent the anger and fear from her body and mind. She charged through
the door, not caring if she woke Ginny and left it hanging open, ran
down the stairs two at a time until she reached the hallway. Here she
stopped dead, not sure whether to continue down to the kitchen or run
out through the front door and just run through the streets until she
was too exhausted to take another step. Tempting though that was, the
rational side of her brain took over, reminding her that there was a
war on and the streets of London at two in the morning weren't
exactly safe for young women at the best of times. She turned and
headed for the kitchen, making her way down the narrow passage to the
door at the end. She pushed the door open and stopped still. Sitting
there in the dark was a lone figure, sheathed in shadow and it
started at the noise of the door opening.
"Illuminus." A low voice muttered, an oil lamp flickered to life on the table,
spreading its warm glow over the room and revealing a tired-looking
Snape at the head of the table.
"I'm
sorry Professor. I didn't mean to disturb you." She turned to
go, embarrassment from earlier rushing to her face.
"That's
quite alright Miss Granger. I would actually appreciate the company.
Please." He motioned for her to join him. She hesitated, she
didn't want company, especially not Snape's. But, not wishing
to be rude, she tentatively stepped into the cold kitchen and sat
down, leaving a seat between herself and her professor. There was a
bottle of Ogden's in front of him, but it was unopened. She looked at
it and chanced a glance at him. He watched her and sneered when their
eyes met. "No." He said, understanding her silent train of
thought. "I haven't just finished a bottle." He pushed the
bottle away from him and looked away, Hermione saw something in him
that she had never seen before, his face seemed less rigid, his eyes
less hard. She saw a sadness there and it finally dawned on her that
she wasn't alone; first Remus, now Snape, two men she thought of as
strong and dependable, were both feeling the strain of this horrible
war.
"Sir?" She finally spoke, uncertainty holding her back, he looked at her,
right into her eyes, "What you saw earlier, it was... it
wasn't..." She couldn't find the words, she didn't know
what it was. How could she explain to someone else? He put his hand
up and shook his head,
"You don't have to explain to me."
"I know. I just wanted to ask you..."
"Have I told anyone?" Hermione nodded, her stomach was doing
summersalts, "No, and I don't intend to." She looked up,
surprised, her eyes wide. "Miss Granger, these are... difficult
times for us all. There is no reason for me to make anyone's life
even more difficult by drawing attention to your relationship."
Hermione smiled, almost laughing. Snape looked confused, he studied
her face carefully trying to see what was amusing.
"Thank you." She said finally. Silence fell once more, the smile faded
from Hermione's lips and her eyes settled on the Firewhiskey, she
wanted to reach for it but she wasn't yet seventeen and she doubted
Snape would tolerate her drinking in front of him. Butterbeer at
gatherings on special occasions was one thing, but hard spirits in a
dark room, alone? That was different. She plucked some courage from
somewhere and asked him, "Were you planning to open that
bottle?" inclining her head towards it as she spoke. He let out
a bark of laughter.
"Ah, that is a tricky one. Before you came in I was contemplating that
very question. For a moment, yes maybe I was. But, I won't be opening
it tonight." She studied his face, there was doubt there and a
morose humour that she didn't understand. She had never thought of
Snape as a drinker, she felt he was very much someone who liked to
remain in control, but now she wondered if he was actually a raging
alcoholic. An image of him shut away in his dungeon drinking alone
night after night came to her and suddenly she felt a wave of pity
for this man who had proved such a daunting enigma for the last five
years. "I think," He said, rising from his seat, "that
it is time I went to bed." He put the bottle away in a cupboard
and went to the door, he stopped abruptly and turned to her, his
usual formal stiffness taking over again, "I'll be leaving
early, Miss Granger. I doubt I will see you until September. Enjoy
the rest of your summer." She nodded and watched him leave.
Their conversation left Hermione with a similarly confused feeling as her
kiss with Remus. Snape had let his guard down in front of her, she
saw emotion in his face, other than bitterness or annoyance. She
wondered for the first time what he was like when he was on his own.
Did he keep his walls around him at all times? Or was her image of
him drinking himself stupid actually accurate? She resigned herself
to never having an answer to her question and feeling a deep
sleepiness fall over her like a heavy veil, before she knew it, her
head was resting on her arms on the table and she fell into a deep
sleep.
