Chapter 1: Finals and Funerals
Eris watched the ridiculously
purple Knight Bus disappear with a loud ‘crack’ before turning to enter the
gates of the Prince family manor.
Apparating from the airport probably would have been easier on her
nerves, but she had another two months before she was eligible for her license. Though she wished at times that she would be
allowed to attend an academy closer to home –or at least on the same continent
as home- there was always the bonus of being done with studies a bit earlier
than her English counterparts. There was
no use whining about it at any rate. She
had begged Felicity to allow her to begin at a school almost two years before,
tired of her tutors and the same rooms every day. Felicity, bless her heart, was a wonderful
old witch, but after fifteen years of no one but the commanding Madam Prince
and various crotchety old wizards who enjoyed expounding upon the glories of
goblin raids and the wonders of Cheering Charms…well Eris had had enough.
It gave her a boost of confidence
to know that she would arrive at Hogwarts that coming August with two years of
social interaction under her belt, something she had sorely needed. Her friends in America
would be missed, but Felicity promised to allow visits. Eris’ stomach stilled tied in knots every
time she thought of her final year of schooling. In three months, she would return to a part
of the wizarding world where she had belonged all along, but had been thrust
away from. This train of thought led her
to contemplate her brother. Harry Potter
and how he would feel about her sudden appearance were two subjects that made
her head spin. Moreover, getting to know
and accept one another would not be their only hardship to deal with once they
hit their majority.
Having
reached the front step, Eris pulled open the door and stepped gracefully
inside. She was surprised that Felicity
was not waiting for her in the entry.
The wide and airy space with its darkly paneled walls and burgundy
carpet was hallow and silent. The double
doors that led to the dining room were closed as usual and light poured in from
the sitting room to her left.
“Hello?”
There was
a sudden popping noise and the chief house elf, Telly, appeared in front of
her. “Miss Eris! You is home a bit early.”
Eris frowned. “No I’m not.
I told Madam Prince that I would be arriving home no later that two in
the afternoon. It is just now three after.”
The house
elf hung its head sheepishly. “I sorry,
Miss Eris. Mistress was sitting up all
night. Mistress has been distressed
since wizard paper arrived at breakfast yesterday.”
“What was in the paper,” Eris asked. She scrunched up her face in frustration,
trying to think of anything that had happened that might cause Felicity such
distress. Her final test had ended early
the day before and she had been in airports and on planes since. She had noted that the driver of the Knight
Bus had been quite subdued, but she had been the only passenger so there was no
one to question.
The
little elf sobbed and Eris winced as she blew her thin, pointed nose of the hem
of the dark blue uniform. “Oh,
missy! It is being so terrible; Telly
doesn’t want to be saying it!”
Eris was beginning to panic a bit
at this point. Telly had never been one
for tantrums. “Telly, I need you to
explain to me what is going on. If you
can’t tell me yourself than fetch me the Daily Prophet so that I can see for
myself.”
The house
elf nodded and then disappeared to retrieve the paper. Eris pinched the bridge of her nose. All she had wanted was to sleep for the
remainder of the day and then wake up early to tell Felicity all about second
term.
What in the name of Merlin is going on?
Felicity locked in her room…the most serious elf I know…er…well
almost…crying her eyes out? Had someone
died?
That
thought caused Eris to bite down hard on her lip. As far as she knew, Felicity had only one
living relative. A
grandson, the child of Felicity’s only daughter, whom Eris had met once as a small
child. He had been an interesting
man and, from the perspective of an eight-year-old, he had towered over her,
his eyes glaring, but in a curious fashion.
The memory was tainted by the sounds of Felicity barking her disapproval
that he had dared to darken her doorstep.
It would be another five years before Eris could convince her guardian
to explain the circumstances of the broken relationship. She understood that there was a certain
amount of guilt to be laid on her own shoulders (though Felicity vehemently
denied it). The man was trying to repent
for the indiscretion that severed his grandmother’s love and trust, but
something about Eris required them to remain apart.
“Missy?” Telly had managed
to pop back into the entrance hall without pulling Eris from her daze. She was waving the Daily Prophet wildly.
Eris snatched the paper up and
thanked the melancholy elf. It did not
take long for her to discover the cause of her beloved guardian’s state of
hiding. Albus Dumbledore, a man Eris had
heard much about in her life was dead, murdered by one of his faculty that
night, probably while her plane had been soaring over Greenland. Felicity was always talking about her one
time teacher and the current…former Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft
and Wizardry. The pair had corresponded
often and Felicity met him for tea, though Eris herself had never met him. Eris knew that Felicity would be feeling like
she had lost a beloved uncle, or perhaps a second father. This, however, was not the worst news the
paper revealed. The murderer was none
other than Felicity’s own grandson, one Severus Snape.

Felicity looked in the mirror once
more as she prepared to leave for the funeral of the greatest wizard she had
ever known. Her face was stony and her
eyes bright with tears that now refused to fall. She had cried herself out before Eris’ return
and managed to be presentable before her raven-haired charge forced her way
into the master bedroom. The rage that
the young woman had expressed on her behalf had helped to sooth her weary
soul. It was a fury that Felicity had
not the strength to express at this point.
It all seemed like a cruel misunderstanding, but after today she would
no longer be able to try to deny that he was gone, murdered by the hand of her
own flesh and blood.
Albus…Albus, what happened? You
were so certain, my friend, so sure of his regret.
She
focused on the mirror once more checking that every strand of dark grey hair
remained firmly twisted in her tight bun.
The formal robes she chose to where that day were meant to honor Albus
in the best way she knew how, but showing pride in her former house and
school. They were soft cotton dyed blue
and trimmed in a bronze color. Her robes
were held closed by a bronze tinted eagle clasp. Both she and Eris had decided to abstain from
wearing hats to help show their respect.
“Are you ready, Felicity?” Eris stood behind her and she turned to the
girl with a look of pride as she took in the young witch’s robes. They, like Felicity’s own, were an honorary
representation of the society Eris belonged to at the American
Academy of Transfiguration, Charms,
and Defense, the Dragon Guard. The robes
were a dark green edged with black and tiny dragons embroidered along the cuff
and neckline. Eris’ clasp was a silver
dragon with onyx eyes, drawn up to strike and holding a sword. She had commission these robes from Madam
Malkins’ the moment Eris owled her with the news that she had been accepted
into the elite society a year early because she would not be return the
following year. Only the top four
students of every graduating class were inducted each year and it was a sign of
how confident the headmistress…or principle…was in Eris’ abilities that she
would make such a gesture.
“Felicity?”
“I’m sorry dear…wool gathering.” Felicity smoothed down her robes and headed
for the front door, confident that Eris was only one step behind her. “You do realize that those penseives I spoke
of last night will be poised for delivery the moment Albus has been laid to
rest?”
“I do.”
The girl’s voice was strong, but wavered slightly with fear. Felicity knew this would be a long day for
them both.
“You still have a choice to remain behind if
you would rather not meet them immediately.”
“I won’t leave you to do this alone,
Felicity.” Though her back was to the
young witch, Felicity could easily picture the stubborn set of her jaw and the
fire in her emerald eyes.
“Very well.” They past through the gates and she held out
her arm for Eris to hold on to.
“Remember to hold on very tightly dear.”
Felicity focused on her beloved
castle in Scotland. Hogwarts, a place she had foolishly thought
would house the twinkling blue eyes of Albus Dumbledore forever.

Eris sat stiffly in her chair and
though her eyes darted about, taking in the many faces, she resisted the urge
to crane her neck in all directions searching for her brother. Several people had given both her and
Felicity strange looks, though she had yet to see any recognition appear when
their eyes met hers. Felicity often told
her that she had her mother’s face and eyes, and the few pictures she had
confirmed the fact, but she hoped her black hair would fool everyone for a
while. As much as she had wanted to
leave it hanging loose down her back and about her shoulders like a protective
curtain, it would not have been proper. Therefore,
she too sported a tight twist atop her head.
Just as she was about to give up
hope of seeing Harry, a glint from sunlight striking glass caught her eye, and
there he was, walking up the aisle to take a seat. There was no mistaking him. How many times had she gazed at pictures of
her father’s face? Harry seemed to
resemble him in every way…messy hair, black glasses…but she knew his eyes were
as green as her own were. A gift from
their mother. Her breath was caught in
her throat as she saw his gaze drifting her way. At the last moment, she spun her head in the
opposite direction and looked across the lake.
The
ceremony seemed to stream by quickly, probably because she was dreading what
would happen not long after. She knew
that probably no later than an hour after to proceedings several owls would
swoop down from the sky bearing shrunken penseives to Felicity, Harry, Remus
Lupin, and the new school head. Though
Felicity told her repeatedly that everything would be fine, Eris felt like a
disaster was near.
Soon there shimmering, white
flames caught her attention and she turned to see a phoenix take flight into
the sky. A white tomb now sat where
Dumbledore had been laid. Next, arrows
began to rain down from the sky and Eris noticed for the first time that there
were centaurs lining the edge of the forest.
A splash pulled her attention back to the lake and she saw several
merpeople heading back into the depths.
They had escaped her notice earlier and she would be shocked when later
informed that the strange beings had sung a lament. Now the majority of the mourners took their
leave of the castle grounds but several small groups remained huddled
together. True friends, colleagues, and
caring students who would miss Albus the headmaster, not Dumbledore the
greatest wizard of the age.
“Eris dear, I must go find Minerva and speak
with her. Keep an eye out for the
owls.” Felicity walked away and Eris
stared at her retreating back. She was
very much alone. A dark green speck
amidst a sea of white chairs. She stood,
feeling silly for remaining seated while everyone else moved away, and slowly
began to make her way down the wide center aisle. After a few minutes of walking in no
particular direction, pointedly avoiding the other guests, Eris began to feel
at though she was being watched.

Remus sighed with no small amount
of relief once he managed to deposit Nymphadora with Molly. He needed a moment to himself with which to
look over Albus’ tomb. The two women
would find more comfort with each other than with him for the time being. As he turned to make his way over to the
white structure, he noticed a flash of dark green robes out of the corner of
his eye. Thinking it was Minerva, he
turned to acknowledge her and was stunned breathless when he was met with the
face of Lily Potter. His mind whirled
for a moment as he watched the young witch pass closely by and then he began to
take note of the differences. There was
the black hair and the fairer skin…but her face! Her face was so like Lily’s had been not long
before they had all left Hogwarts. He
found himself unable to stop watching her, driven to understand why this girl
was so similar to his long dead friend.
When she
paused and began to look about, Remus realized that she must have sensed his
staring. She turned and spotted
him. With out really deciding to, he
found himself approaching her slowly. Her
expression changed from annoyance, to confusion, and then to apprehension. When he was standing directly in front of her,
he saw that her eyes were the exact same emerald of both Harry and Lily.
He extended his hand. “Hello.
I’m Remus Lupin.”
_______________________________________________________________________
Lupin?
Lupin! Damn.
Eris took the tired looking
wizard’s hand in a delicate grip and shook it.
“Eris. Did you know the
headmaster well?”
She could
tell by his closed expression that he had recognized her face and was trying to
determine why she would not give him her last name. Potter was a name he would not believe and
she was not certain that Prince would be safe at the moment either.
“I knew him most of my life,” Lupin said softly. “Were you a student here? I was the Defense teacher several years ago,
and I apologize if I don’t remember you.”
“No.
I’m afraid I didn’t know Professor Dumbledore,” she said with a sad
smile. Eris looked to either side of the
wizard trying to spot where Felicity had gone.
She spotted her several feet behind Lupin giving her a strange
look. “My guardian was a student here a
long time ago, and a friend of the headmaster’s. She asked that I accompany her for emotional
support.”
“Yes.
It’s always good to have those closest to us near at hand during a time
like this.” His amber eyes were so sad
when he said this and it occurred to Eris in that moment that this man had been
a close friend to her parents, both dead for many years. She also knew that he had lost his two other
closest friends, one by death, one by betrayal.
“And who is your guardian, my dear?”
“Er...Felicity
Prince.” Eris eyed him carefully,
searching for any sign that the name might mean anything to him. She was relieved when there was none. That was when she spotted the approach of
several owls. One was heading towards
the lake, another towards Felicity and her companion, and two were coming to
the spot where she stood. She needed to
leave, fast.
“Mr. Lupin, please excuse me, but Felicity is
waving me over.”
She
trotted over to Felicity, not wanting to attract more attention by breaking
into a flat out run. The two women
looked at her with concern when she arrived.
Felicity was the first to speak.
“Eris, is something the matter?”
“Owls,” was all Eris had time to say before a
large, brown barn owl swooped down to her arm.
There was a small package tied to its leg. As Felicity began to remove the package, Eris
turned to see that Harry was only just opening the enclosed letter, but Lupin
had already begun to read.
Panic filled her. She was not ready to face this yet. They were all grieving and this information
would be quite a shock. What if they rejected
her? What if Harry did? Did she even deserve not to be? She just to face the stern looking woman that
she assumed was the new headmistress.
“Please, we need to go inside somewhere, fast!”
“Calm down, Eris,” Felicity said sharply. “You knew this might happen. Minerva, I apologize for this.”
Minerva…was it McGonagall?...held a package similar to her own, but she was not
paying any attention to it yet. “Lis,
she seems upset. Perhaps a cup of tea
would do us some good.”
Obviously Felicity had not told
the witch anything as of yet. “That
would be wonderful, but could we hurry please?”
The three
of them began to hurry towards the school.
Eris turned to glance once more at Lupin and saw that he was gazing
after her in shock. She turned and
quickened her pace.
“Wait!”
The sound of the quiet wizard’s voice shouting after her spurred her
into a sprint and she didn’t stop until she had entered the castle and began
running up steps, stopping occasionally for directions from the portraits.

Remus simply couldn’t believe what
he was reading, but he recognized Dumbledore’s flowing script and was certain
that the penseive that he held would put his doubts to rest. Twins...
My dear Remus,
If you are reading this, my boy, then I am afraid that I have left this
world with at least on important task unfinished. The war must still carry on, else I would
have returned a long hidden child to her family and friends in person, and
there would be no need for this letter.
Lily and James were blessed with twins
tonight, Remus. A boy, Harry James Potter, and a beautiful
girl, your godchild, Eris Lily Potter.
Because of circumstances, which will remain secret a little longer, Eris
was sent to live with a guardian and both my memory and the memories and Lily
and possibly James have been erased of the infant’s presence.
I cannot know for certain how many months or years it may be before you
receive this letter, if ever, and I can only hope that you will exercise the
patience and gentleness I know you for when dealing with the girl.
Be safe, my boy. Protect Eris,
protect Harry, and keep close all those whom you love.
With sincere affection
and respect
Albus Dumbledore
Remus looked up once more to see
Eris, Minerva and one other witch he assumed to be Madam Prince, rushing
towards the castle. She glanced back and
he saw the panic and fear in her face, even at a distance. He was suddenly over come with the need to
hold this girl who looked so much like Lily.
Lily, who had always been there for him and maybe now he could truly
repay the kindness.
He called out to the girl, drawing
the attention of everyone remaining outside with his shout. “Wait!”
But she only ran faster. He spun about and scanned the faces, looking
for Harry. He spotted the boy close to
the lake, a piece of parchment trembling in his hands. Ron and Hermione stood beside him, reading
over his shoulder. The boy would be
taken care of. It was more important for
him to get to Eris. He sprinted for the
school entrance, leaving a confused Nymphadora and an curious Weasley clan in
his wake.
