Chapter 2
Lucinda
gasped as she walked into the rooms that she would call home for the next ninth
months.
She had
expected a small bed chamber, not unlike the girl’s dorms across the hall. But
instead she had walked into a small sitting room. There was a door in the wall
ahead, but she didn’t go towards it. She wanted to imprint the look of the room
in her mind.
It was
nothing like what she thought a Slytherin room would look like, there was no
green or silver anywhere in the room. The walls were a deep burgundy, and the
two velvet couched adorning the room, were the same color. Across from the
couches was a large fireplace, the hearth being done in what looked like black
marble. The carpet, which was deep and soft, was the color of egg shells. There
was a small table in between the couches, and a large book shelf in the corner,
both done is a dark mahogany. The book shelf was filled to the brim with books,
and Lucinda wandered over to it, expecting the books all to be of the educational
sorts. Much to her pleasant surprise, it was filled with fiction books. There
were mysteries, science fiction, and fantasy. There were even a few romance novels
here and there. Lucinda was in heaven. She reached for a book, but stopped,
thinking of the other room she had yet to explore.
With a
giggle, not unlike that of a child’s, which felt so good, since she hadn’t
laughed in such a long time, she kicked off her shoes, and made her way,
barefoot, through the plush carpet to the unexplored room.
She opened
the door and stared in wonder. The bedroom was more traditionally Slytherin,
including the large stone fireplace across from the bed. Throughout the stone
hearth serpents were carved, and to Lucinda’s surprise, they made her feel
protected, not threatened, likes snakes usually did. How she made it into
Slytherin, she’d never know.
The walls
were done in a dark forest green that matched the quilt on the king size bed.
The sheets, however, were silky silver. Against the far wall, was yet another
door, that Lucinda assumed led to the bathroom, but she didn’t care. The bed
looked so comfortable that she wanted to jump in and just go to sleep. But
before she could bring her fantasy into reality, there was a clatter in the
sitting room, and Lucinda hurried to see what was going on.
The
frightened look on Lucinda’s face relaxed into a smile when she saw the nicely
dressed house elf standing in front of the fire place, which was now burning
with a soft, comforting fire.
“Headmaster
Dumbledore asked Winky to bring miss some food. Said Ms. Lucinda had missed dinner.”
Lucinda
nodded, noticing the array of food on the small table. “Thank you Winky. It’s
good to see you.”
Winky
nodded. “It’s good to see Ms. Lucinda as well.” And she disappeared back into
the fire place.
Lucinda
smiled as she watched the house elf leave. Last year, Winky had finally started
to accept her freedom, and now it seemed as though she was enjoying it. Thanks
to Dobby of course, and there had been rumors flying between the house elves
that soon there may be little house elves running around the castle. The look
on Winky’s face gave the rumors a ring of truth, or Lucinda at least thought
so.
She grabbed
a book for the book shelf, a mystery to be exact, and walked over to the couch.
She made herself a plate of food, and settled down on the couch, her nose in
the book. She ate her fill, and placed the plate back on the table, before
going back to her book, not realizing that she had eaten almost twice as much
as she had all summer.
“Albus,
this isn’t a good idea! You must remember why I pushed her away in the first
place!” Severus exclaimed to the headmaster.
“Yes I
remember Severus, and at first I agreed with you, but now, seeing her wasting
away, I’m not so sure it was a good idea.” The headmaster replied calmly.
“But…It
would be too dangerous to allow the relationship to continue!” Severus argued.
“I agree it
would be dangerous, but what do you think would be more dangerous? Voldemort
MAY find out, or allowing her to continue wasting away?”
Severus
sighed, knowing that Albus was right, “But, I don’t know if I can regain her
trust.”
Albus had a
mischievous twinkle in his eye, “That’s why I gave her detention with you.
Expect her at eight o’clock sharp tomorrow night; she’ll be serving detention
for the next week.”
Severus
nodded, “Fine Albus, but if something happens to her…”
“Nothing
will happen, she’s got an entire school that I am sure would be willing to
protect her. Now go and get some sleep.”
Severus
nodded, and left the Headmaster’s office with a swish of robes.
Lucinda
finally put her book down on the table, the food having been cleared away
earlier, and headed for the bedroom. Winky and Dobby had graciously offered to
unpack her belongings, and not wanting to leave her book, she readily agreed.
So her belongings
all put away, she head for the bathroom to get ready for bed. She opened the
door and was shocked. The bath tub was like the prefects…large enough to swim
in and had a variety of different soaps and scented salts. The entire room was
done in a light rose pink, including the porcelain of the toilet, and sink. The
tile on the floor and in the bathtub was designed with roses. All in all, it
was breath taking.
She yawned
and realized it was defiantly time for bed. She brushed her teeth, washed her
face and then braided her long red hair, before heading back into the bedroom
to change into her pajamas. They were nothing special, just a pair of fleece
pajama pants and a tank top, but it was comfortable, and served the purpose.
She crawled between the silky sheets, said an incantation to lower the light
from the torches in the room, and drifted into a deep sleep.
Severus
awoke in a cold sweat, the words of the killing curse still ringing in his
ears. He had dreamt that Voldemort had kidnapped Lucinda had was torturing her in
front of him before using the worse unforgivable. He knew what Albus had said
was true, and that he had to try and get Lucinda to trust him again, but, and
he wouldn’t admit this to anyone, he was afraid. Afraid she would never forgive
him, afraid of being rejected.
He slowly
got out of bed and headed for the shower, knowing, that after a nightmare like
that, he wasn’t going to get back to sleep. He just prayed that it wouldn’t
come true.
Lucinda
awoke with a start and looked around her room, trying to find the reason why
she had awakened so suddenly. Quickly she threw the blankets off slipped off
the bed, her feet sinking in to the plush carpet. She grabbed her bath robe
from the back of the door, and went into the sitting room.
In front of
her, Winky was setting up breakfast on the small table. “Winky? What are you
doing?” Lucinda asked with a yawn.
Winky
looked up and her eyes grew wide, “I’m so sorry miss, Winky didn’t mean to wake
you. Headmaster requested breakfast with you in your rooms.”
Lucinda
raised an eyebrow, this was news to her, but she put on a smile. “Thank you
Winky, did he say what time he’d be here?”
Winky
nodded, “About an hour miss.”
Lucinda
gave her thanks to the house elf and headed back into the bedroom. If the
headmaster was to be there in a half hour she had a lot of work to do.
Ten minutes
later, Lucinda stepped out of the shower, did a drying charm, and a glamour
charm, adding weight to her body and face, as well as a little bit of make up.
For some reason, she was feeling better that day then she had since Severus had
broken up with her.
She was
ready for the headmasters arrival twenty minutes later after pulling her hair
up into a half pony tail and getting dressed in her school robes. She was
sitting on the couch reading the book she had started the night before when a
knock came at the door. She called out enter as she sat the book on the couch
beside her and looked up to see the headmaster walking through the door.
“Professor,
it’s nice to see you.” Lucinda said pleasantly as he took a seat, “Please, help
yourself.” She said waving a hand towards the food, before helping herself.
“Thank you.”
Dumbledore replied, also helping himself, “You look better today, are you using
a glamour charm?”
Lucinda
nodded, “I didn’t want the other students to see that state that I am in.
Although I am feeling better.”
“And these
rooms are to your liking?” He asked, his eyes landing on the book beside her.
“Oh very
much thank you. Now what do I owe to the pleasure of your visit?”
“I just
wanted to remind you of your detention tonight. Eight o’clock sharp.”
“I
remember.” Lucinda said, not bothering to hide the distain in her voice.
“Excellent.”
Dumbledore said, “I also stopped by to give you your timetable.” He spoke
softly, handing her a folded piece of parchment.”
“Thank you”
Lucinda replied, taking it.
“I must
leave now, don’t be late for your first class.” He warned, and then floated out
of the room.
Lucinda
nibbled on her breakfast as she opened the parchment. She widened her eyes in
horror.
Great,
double potions first thing.
