Harry, Ron and Hermione didn't take the train back to London, but instead
portkeyed to the Burrow after Dumbledore's funeral with Mr. Weasley. The house
was crowded with people as usual, all still dressed in their mourning clothes
and looking stretched thin with worry. Molly Weasley hugged them all in turn and
nearly suffocated Harry when she squeezed him too tightly.
Harry pulled away and she let him go. "You'll be in George and Fred's old room
again, Harry dear," she said with a tight smile. "Why don't the three of you go
on ahead and take up your things. I'll call you when supper's ready."
"We didn't bring anything with us Mum," Ron pointed out.
At Molly's look of confusion, Arthur spoke up, "Moody's going to bring their
trunks and stuff along later. He wants to go over their things what with the
poisoned mead and cursed necklace incidents this past year."
"Well, then why don't you three come with me into the kitchen? You can help with
the cooking."
"I'm going to get going then, Molly," Arthur said. "The Ministry's in a right
state of chaos at the moment."
Molly nodded her head. "Do be careful."
"Of course," Arthur replied and then apparated away with a pop.
Hermione and Ron followed Molly into the kitchen, but Harry stayed behind in the
living room to see what information he could possibly draw out of the Order
members who had gathered at the Weasleys' after the funeral. Kingsley and
Sturgis Podmore, were engaged in a round of wizards chest while Mrs. Figg sat in
an old, worn chair knitting. The two men ignored his presence, except for slight
nods and Mrs. Figg glanced up when he sat down on the couch.
"Decided you'd stay behind with the rest of this sad bunch, did you?" she asked
in a scratchy voice.
"Didn't much feel like helping out with the cooking," Harry replied. "Get enough
of that at the Dursleys'."
"Now, now, Molly is hardly Petunia Dursley." She watched him with dulled eyes.
"I think you have something else on your mind."
Harry didn't respond.
"Go on and spit it out boy. I'm too old for small talk and nonsense so ask what
you want and I'll do my best to answer your questions."
He sighed, but did as she asked. "What's going on with the fight against
Voldemort."
She flinched slightly. "Don't know much of the details about that, other than
the Order's in pretty bad shape with Dumbledore gone and no spy. I hate to say
it, but I think everyone's just sitting here like lame ducks waiting for the
next round of attacks."
Kingsley gave a snort of protest, but did not look up from the chessboard. "Scrimgeour's
a right horse's ass, but he's doing a decent job of putting together an army and
tracking down leads on Death Eaters' camps."
"But it's just leads, isn't it?" Podmore asked. "No one's got a proper clue as
to what You Know Who's going to do next."
Harry thought back to his conversations with Dumbledore. "Hogwarts. He'll go
after Hogwarts and then he'll launch his war from there."
Kingsley chuckled but looked up at Harry properly for the first time since he
had portkeyed into the room. "What will he want with a school?"
"Dumbledore said that Voldemort's attached to Hogwarts, more so than he's
ever been to a person*." Harry answered.
"What else did Dumbledore tell you?" Kingsley asked soberly.
"Just stuff on Voldemort's past really," Harry hedged, avoiding any mention of
the Horcruxes. "He told me about his childhood, his mother, that he wanted the
Dark Art's position and stuff like that."
Kinsley looked at him with narrowed eyes. "So he prepped you on how the snake
thinks?"
Harry nodded.
"That could come in quite useful, if Dumbledore passed that kind of insight down
to you – he was the only one who really had any on You Know Who," Mrs. Figg
spoke up.
"Specifics on what You Know Who's up to at the moment would be quite a bit more
useful though," Podmore commented.
Harry shrugged. "I was kind of hoping you guys would know more about that."
The room fell silent for a moment until someone cleared their throat. Harry
looked up to see Ginny standing in the doorway. "Mum was wondering where you had
gone to, Harry."
"Better go in there," Mrs. Figg said before turning back towards her knitting.
Harry stood up and followed Ginny into the other room to find the entire Weasley
clan, save Arthur, gathered around the table while Molly bustled around the
kitchen.
"Fred move over so Harry can sit down," Molly ordered her son.
"I don't think there's anywhere to really move to," Fred replied, but managed to
squeeze over enough to make just enough space for Harry.
"Nonsense, there's always been enough room for my children at this table
before."
"That was before certain additions," Ginny said snidely while crinkling up her
nose and casting a glance towards Fluer.
"Or maybe some of us have just gotten wider," George bit back in Fluer's
defense, staring Ginny down.
"Or maybe some of our ego's have magically grown so much with our Gringott's
accounts that they now require an extra seat of their own," Ginny said with a
false sweetness as she glared right back at her brother.
"Or maybe – " George started.
"Silence!" Molly yelled from over by the stove. "We are going to have a nice
family dinner tonight! You will be nice to one another until at least after the
wedding – which will be beautiful and lovely – and then we'll say our goodbyes
as a loving family!"
Everyone shut up and the tension in the room threatened to choke them all.
"Someone planning on dying after the wedding?" Fred attempted to break the ice,
but only increased the chill in the room further.
Ron cleared his throat. "I'll be leaving after the wedding," he announced
probably at the worst possible time, sending Harry's stomach plummeting. "I'm
going to go with Harry back to Privet Drive, and then well – we're not going
back to Hogwarts next year."
Harry couldn't look up at Molly, but could feel her stare flitting back and
forth between him and Ron.
Hermione spoke from next to Ron in a small voice, but with her back perfectly
straight, "I'm going with them too."
The plate Molly was holding crashed to the floor and Harry looked over to see
Molly crying. She left the room and ran upstairs and the shouting began.
"What the blazing hell are you thinking?" Charlie yelled at Ron.
"I'm an adult now and it's my decision!"
"Just because you're seventeen doesn't make you an adult!" George yelled,
sounding remarkably like his mother.
"You just had to pick now to say something?" Bill shouted.
"Eet was certainly not tee best timing!" Fluer added.
"What would be the best timing?" Ginny asked her scathingly.
"And you started it!" Bill rounded on his sister. "Fluer's going to be my wife
and you just had to keep acting like a spoiled brat who's no longer getting all
the attention! You couldn't just let Mum have her happy family dinner!"
"I'm not the one who announced that they're going to run off with Harry and get
themselves killed!"
Harry stood up and made his way towards the back door amidst all the commotion.
The Weasleys were too wrapped up in their arguments to notice.
"I'm not running off to get myself killed and I thought telling her before I
left was the right thing to do!"
Ron's voice carried through the back door as Harry shut it. The yelling became
more and more faint the further he walked through the garden and moved away from
the house. A series of pops broke through the relative silence of the night from
just over the old stone wall surrounding the garden and Harry looked over to see
Remus, Tonks and Moody with his and his friends' belongings. Remus let Hedwig
out of her cage. She flew over to land on Harry's arm and he petted her softly.
"Nice night?" Remus asked softly.
"Stars are out," Harry replied.
"And where exactly is Kingsley?" Moody growled as his magical eye darted around.
"Over here," the auror's voice carried over from a clump of trees where he was
covertly standing. "It got a bit loud in there, so Harry and I came out for a
little fresh air."
Harry realized why the auror was still at the Burrow when Mr. Weasley had said
the Ministry was in chaos and stiffened.
"Did you now?" Moody stared at them both.
Tonks floated the trunks and cages over the wall and towards the back porch,
where they landed with several clunks. Crookshanks howled at the rough handling
from inside his cage. Remus helped her climb over the low wall. Harry was
gladdened to see Tonks' hair back to a nice, bright shade of pink.
"They are a bit loud at times," Remus remarked thoughtfully.
"Yes, well, it seems that young Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger will be leaving
after Bill and Fluer's wedding to help Harry with whatever he's planning."
Moody stared at Harry hard, but only gave him a nod of approval and said "It's
good to have backup you can rely upon."
"Although I can't imagine Molly and Arthur are too happy with the situation,"
Tonks remarked.
"Mr. Weasley doesn't know yet," Harry responded.
Remus sighed and started walking out of the garden and towards the lopsided
house. "Well, I suppose someone has to go into the fray and break it up."
"Feeling particularly brave tonight, Remus?" Tonks asked with a smile on her
face which made her eyes twinkle and followed after him.
Moody walked towards the house with a broken gate, but called back to Harry to
stay within the wards.
"So you're my watchdog?" Harry asked Kingsley.
The dark man nodded. "Don't worry, I'll try to make myself as scarce as possible
and you already have fair warning that I'll be listening out," he warned. "I
don't much like being in a position to spy on others, especially when we're both
on the same side."
Harry smiled slightly in understanding. "Right."
Kingsley slinked off back to his hiding space, and if Harry didn't already know
he was there watching, he would have never noticed the other man.
