CHAPTER TWO
The next couple of days for Daniel were trying. He tried to relax, but he was glued to the TV. He had called Jack to ask for another day off stating that he was still too tired to work. Jack had been very happy to help his archeologist. Jack commented that Daniel never took enough time off as it is.
Daniel's stomach had lurched with nausea as the pictures out of Little Whinging had clearly shown the Dark Mark floating in the air. The Muggles would never know that it was there, but Daniel could see it with no problems. He wondered vaguely how the Ministry of Magic was handling this much exposure to the situation. The situation in Little Whinging had become internationally known and anyone with magic, who had been watching the TV, could clearly see that this was a magical attack. Daniel knew that the British government was going to demand action to this terrorist attack soon. He wondered idly how the Prime Minister was going to react. He, along with the Queen, knew of the Magical world. What was he going to tell his country?
Daniel shook his head in resignation. He didn't think that Britain was going to stand for this. For far too long, the Magical world had been killing Muggles. Daniel knew that after he had finally killed Voldemort and before he disappeared from the Magical world, he had heard rumors stating that if Voldemort hadn't been killed when he had, the Prime Minister of Britain would've stepped in. Daniel wondered if maybe they should've done so anyway.
He wondered who the new Dark Lord was. If they were using the Dark Mark, could Malfoy have decided to take over? Daniel frowned at the thought and realized that couldn't happen. Draco Malfoy had killed Lucius Malfoy. He had become a spy for the Order of the Phoenix. Did Voldemort have an heir that no one knew about? He couldn't imagine Voldemort wanting to share his power, but it was a possibility.
Daniel sighed. He was taking too much time worrying about a world that he wasn't even a part of it anymore. He hadn't done much magic since he left and when he had, he hadn't even been on Earth. Daniel smirked; he wondered what the Ministry of Magic would think of their 'hero' doing magic on other worlds. He could imagine the shocked expressions on his friends' faces as he explained to them that yes, Muggles were gating to other worlds and no, they weren't magic to do so.
Not even Wizards had the ability to go to other worlds anymore. He frowned a moment. He had always wondered if Wizards might be the descendants of the Ancients. Could Merlin himself have been an Ancient? That would explain the awesome power that he could wield. Daniel laughed darkly. What would the Wizarding World do if they knew that they might actually be descendants of an alien race instead of the human race? Would the Purebloods be proud or horrified that they could possibly thank the Ancients for their powers?
Daniel had hoped to investigate that idea at one time, but he had realized that the Muggle world wasn't ready for the knowledge of the Wizarding world. The Stargate they could explain away as technology, but magic was something that Muggles weren't ready to know about. Daniel knew that humans destroyed that which they feared. He was just thankful that SG-1 had destroyed Apophis's ships before they could attack earth. He would've hated to think of what a G'ouald would've been like in a Wizard's body, assuming that they could get past the wards that surrounded the Wizarding World.
He also wondered if the Witches and Wizards were descendants of the Ancients, what about Jack? Could Jack have magic? Daniel knew that Jack had the gene from the Ancients so did that mean that Jack could do magic? If he could, why didn't Jack get a letter from any of the Magical schools in the United States? Daniel sometimes felt a charge around Jack, like the buzz he would get from someone with magic, but it was faint. Maybe Jack was actually a squib. That would explain why he never got a letter or went to a Magical school that Daniel knew of. Daniel was too wary to ask Jack about the possibility of him doing magic. He could already see the look of disbelief that would be on his best friend's face. Jack would probably have him committed, again. Daniel would like to know though. He would like to share his hidden self with his best friend. He was tired of keeping everything to himself.
Daniel was brought out of his thoughts by the sound of the phone ringing. He walked over to the table and picked it up.
"Hello," he said.
"Er"¦may I speak to Harry Potter, please?" a voice asked.
Daniel was shocked. How in the hell did they know to call this number?
"I'm sorry, but no one by the name of Harry Potter lives here. Can I help you in any way?" Daniel asked politely.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I was sure that I had the right number," the female voice said. Daniel froze as he recognized the voice. Hermione Granger, or Malfoy since she had married Draco, had been one of his best friends. She had been one of the many people that he had left behind. He tried to calm his racing heart, but it was difficult. He could do this. He faced down Voldemort and many System Lords; he could talk to his old friend.
"Not unless you know someone by the name of Harry Potter?" Hermione asked sadly.
Daniel cleared his throat. "I'm afraid not, miss. He might have lived here before me, but I couldn't tell you for sure," Daniel said.
"Oh, how long have you lived there?" Hermione asked curiously.
"Four years," Daniel said.
"Um"¦," Hermione murmured.
Daniel felt nervous. He knew that tone of voice. Hermione was working things out. He knew that if anyone could figure out who he was, it was her. His friend was just too damn smart. Too bad she had decided to stay in the Wizarding world. The Stargate program could've used a person with her intelligence.
"Miss, are you all right?" Daniel asked with concern.
He heard Hermione sigh sadly and reply, "No, I'm not all right. I had just hoped to find my friend here. I'm sorry to have bothered you."
"It's all right," Daniel said.
"Goodbye," Hermione said and hung up the phone.
Daniel set the phone down and sat down on the couch. He was shaking a little. He thought he would never hear from Hermione again. It had hit him at how much he missed her, Ron and Draco as soon as he heard her voice. He missed the friends that he had left behind and he would love to see them again, but he knew that if he did, they would beg him to go back. That he couldn't do. The three months that followed Voldemort's death were the hardest he had ever had to live, even with things that had happened to him since.
The Wizarding world had thought of him as a hero or a pariah, depending on who you asked. Fudge had decided to try to save his career and launched a campaign to have Harry thrown in Azkaban for killing a Wizard, regardless of the fact that Voldemort had been a Dark Lord. The uproar from that campaign made Harry's life unbearable. There was nowhere that he could hide from the publicity. He had been constantly hounded by fans or by those who thought he would be the next Dark Lord. His friends were attacked as well. Some had thought they were dark by association. Several people he had considered friends had deserted him, as they couldn't handle the pressure of being his friend. Luckily, they were only really associates. His real friends stood by him, but he had seen the toll it had been taking on them as well.
After an incident where a Wizard attacked Hermione for being 'dark', he realized that he needed to leave the Wizarding world. He knew that once he was gone, the attention would be off his friends and they would have their lives back. He also realized that it was the only way that he could live his life as well. He hated the attention that had been focused on him. He was no hero, he never had been. He had just been a boy who had too much responsibility thrown onto his shoulders. Prophecy or not, there was no way that the Wizarding world should've relied on him to save them all.
So with plans made, notes to his friends saying that he was leaving, a scathing letter to the Daily Prophet for the Wizarding world to read, and one time turner, he left the Wizarding world with no inclination on ever coming back. If the Wizarding world had another Dark Lord, then they could take care of it themselves.
Daniel heard a knock on the door and got up from the couch. He walked over to the door and opened it. He smirked as he saw his best friend standing there. Jack was bouncing on his feet, a naughty grin on his face. Daniel knew what that meant and he realized that it was the perfect thing to make his mind stop working.
"Come in, Jack," he said as he backed away from the door.
"Thanks, Danny," Jack said as he walked into the apartment. He took his coat off and laid it on the back of the couch. He turned and looked expectantly at Daniel. Daniel sighed, grinned and shut the door. He walked over to his friend, looked him up and down and noticed that the man was practically vibrating with need.
Daniel arched an eyebrow. "Is there something you need, Jack?" Daniel asked teasingly.
"Danny," Jack whined.
"Jack," Daniel whined, his eyes twinkling in mischief.
Jack growled, stalked over to Daniel, grabbed him and kissed him hard. Daniel melted against Jack and he could feel the tenseness of Jack's body. He pulled back from the kiss and looked at his best friend in concern.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Daniel asked.
"Nothing! I just need some sex, Danny," Jack said with a growl.
Daniel frowned at him. "You know, I'm always here for you, but there is something wrong with you. You are entirely too tense. What's going, Jack?" he asked in concern.
Jack sighed in annoyance and ran his hand through his hair in frustration. "It's nothing really. I guess I just wanted to work off my frustration and I thought since we both had time off, I would come over here and be with you," Jack said with a pout.
A small grin ghosted over Daniel's face and he reached up and caressed Jack's face. "I can help you work off your frustration, but I need to know why you're frustrated in the first place."
Jack looked at him sourly. "You're going to laugh," he said with a pout.
"Jack, I would never laugh at you," Daniel said sincerely, his eyes glowing with humor.
Jack gave him a look of disbelief and snorted. "Yea, right. What about that time I told you about my phobia of teddy bears?" Jack asked.
Daniel's eyes danced with merriment. "But Jack, they're so cute and cuddly. What is there to be scared of?" he asked.
"Those things are evil. They look cute and cuddly, but they're dangerous. Did you know that their eyes follow whenever you're in the room? It's creepy!" Jack said adamantly.
"I guess I just don't understand. To me they're just cute," Daniel said.
Jack gave him a mock glare and said, "Yes, I know. After I told you, my best friend, about my phobia, I began to receive several teddy bears from co-workers. Do you know what it's like to see Teal'c carrying a large teddy bear into the cafeteria? I couldn't even refuse it because Teal'c was so happy to give it to me. What could I say? He's a friend! I still have that damn thing sitting in my office!"
Daniel snickered. He had been there when Teal'c had given Jack the rather large teddy bear. When Daniel had told Sam and Teal'c about Jack's 'love' of teddy bears, it had gotten around the base, just as Daniel had planned. When Jack started to receive teddy bears, it was all Daniel could do not to laugh. He never thought he would see Teal'c give Jack a teddy bear; a large, three-foot, purple teddy bear. Daniel couldn't hold back the snickers as he remembered Jack's horrified expression or the delighted look on Teal'c's face as Jack accepted the teddy bear. Jack had given Daniel a glare that would've frightened Apophis or Anubis if they had still been alive. He knew that Daniel had spread his 'love' of teddy bears throughout the base. Daniel had just smiled back at him. He was used to Jack's glares.
"I promise Jack, I won't laugh at you. Really," Daniel said.
Jack looked at him skeptically. He sighed and said, "There are owls hanging around my house."
Daniel froze. Owls? Oh god! Daniel looked at Jack and nervously licked his lips. "Owls?" he asked. "Um"¦how is that a problem?"
"One owl is fine, two owls a little strange but still within parameters. Three owls and I was ready to call the newspapers, but when there are eight owls sitting in the tree outside of my home I knew then that it was a conspiracy. Nothing I do can get rid of them. They just sit there, staring at my house. I had to leave. I was going nuts!" Jack said with irritation.
Daniel blinked rapidly. Why were there owls waiting in Jack's trees? Were they from the Wizarding world? Were they looking for Jack or were they looking for Harry Potter? Owls could usually find anyone in the world, except those that had been hidden by powerful spells. Were his spells wearing off? Daniel felt a cold chill creep down his spine. The attack on Little Whinging, Hermione calling, now the owls sitting in Jack's trees had to be more than just coincidence. Could they have found him already?
"Danny? Hey, Danny! Where did go?" Jack asked in concern.
Daniel brought his gaze back to Jack. He frowned slightly. "Er"¦sorry. I was just thinking of what you told me. Did you put out some new birdseed?" Daniel asked.
Jack snorted. "You're assuming I had birdseed out in the first place. No, Danny, there was no birdseed out. There were eight owls out in the daylight. I believe owls are nocturnal or at least most of them are. It's just really strange," Jack said with irritation.
"Were they doing anything? Were they holding anything?" Daniel asked nervously.
Jack gave him a sharp look. "No, Daniel, they were just sitting in the tree. As for holding anything, they're owls, what would they be holding?" Jack asked him scornfully.
Daniel sighed. "I was just asking. I think you're a little tense," Daniel said.
Jack glared at him balefully. "No, ya think!" he said sarcastically. "Why else do you think I came over here?"
"Um"¦my winning personality?" Daniel said primly.
Jack walked over to Daniel, a wicked grin on his face. "As winning as your personality is, what I want is your ass, Danny. Now, can we get to it? I need to work off some frustration."
Daniel grinned at his friend. Four years ago, Jack had made a drunken pass at Daniel, who had been slightly stunned. He had put Jack to bed and waited to confront the man the next morning. Jack had been mortified when he realized that he had made a pass at his friend. He had been sure that Daniel was going to tell him to go to hell and that their friendship was in ruins. Daniel could remember the look of pain and fear on Jack's face when he told Daniel that he wouldn't bother him again, that it wouldn't happen again.
Daniel wasn't bothered by the pass; all Daniel had been concerned about was if Jack had feelings for him that Daniel hadn't known about. Jack had smiled sadly and said, "Danny, you are my best friend and I love you, but I'm not in love with you. I just want to sleep with you. You are a very attractive man."
Daniel had been relieved to know that there wasn't any unrequited love that he had to worry about. When Daniel realized that they could be friends with benefits, he jumped at the chance. Relationships were few and far in between for the both of them. When either one needed to be close to someone, they would call each other. The arrangement had worked well and years later, their friendship was even stronger. They had helped each other through hard times and they both thankful for one another.
"Come on, Jack. Let's go to my bedroom," Daniel said with a grin.
Jack smiled widely. "All right!" he said cheerfully. He rushed by Daniel, grabbed his hand and dragged a laughing Daniel down the hallway towards the bedroom. Daniel was relieved that Jack had come over. He needed some distraction from his thoughts.
Jack pulled him into the bedroom and hurriedly got Daniel out of his clothes. He pushed Daniel down on the bed gently and proceeded to take off his clothes. Daniel raised himself up on his elbows and watched in amusement as Jack hopped around the bedroom, trying to take off his pants.
"A little eager are we?" Daniel asked with a grin.
Jack, naked as the day he was born, grinned at him and walked over to the bed. He jumped onto the bed and lowered himself onto Daniel. He leaned down and gave Daniel a scorching kiss. When Daniel felt like he was going to pass out from the lack of oxygen, Jack pulled back and grinned down at Daniel.
"I'm very eager, Dannyboy. Very, very eager," Jack said as he moved his hips. Jack's hard cock pressed into Daniel's and Daniel moaned at the sensation. "Now, be quiet and let me have my wicked way with you," Jack said with evil smirk.
Daniel laughed. "Please Jack, have your wicked way with me," Daniel said mockingly.
Jack sighed gustily. "Oh yea!" he lowered his head and once again began to kiss Daniel.
Daniel could feel his mind shut down as the sensations in his body took over. He was so very, very glad that Jack had come over.
