Hermione
was dragged from her thoughts at the slight noise to her right. Looking down,
shining her glowing wand into the darkness, she saw the notorious Mrs. Norris
staring at her with those keen green eyes.
“Hullo, Mrs.
Norris.” Hermione said softly, removing the cloak from covering her head,
stared into the eyes of the cat that seemed to scream with some hidden
knowledge. However, Hermione was no longer scared of what the fur ball
represented. “I’m head girl, I don’t have a curfew, so I don’t much care how
long you stand there staring at me.” Hermione finished with a slight smile.
The cat
tilted her head to the left, as if acknowledging the truth of the statement.
The cat started to stalk off into the dark, much quieter than her arrival had
been, obviously looking for someone else to intimidate. “Besides,” Hermione
added, still aware of the man behind the door and the need to be quiet. “I
think that the students will be shocked when you finally show your true form. Animagus.”
The cat
froze at the word, flicked her tail in a way that seemed to say:
“and-what-are-you-going-to-do-about-it” and without once looking at the curly
haired witch, continued on her way down the dark halls.
Hermione
shook her head, giggling quietly until she pressed her ear to the door again.
The soft melodic music continued, and as if reading her emotions the tempo
picked up and an even more complex song was rapidly falling from the finger
tips of the musician. Since the night she had first discovered the hidden class
room and the young man that utilized it, she found herself lurking outside of
the room either during rounds, or under Harry’s borrowed invisibility cloak;
just to listen.
The slight
pressure from her hands and ear against the thick oak caused the unlatched door
to open slightly and silently.
Hermione
covered her mouth to subdue the surprised gasp that threatened to escape.
Composing herself, she peeked into the room. Relieved that due to the
positioning of the grand black piano, Draco had his back to her and since there
had been to pause in his playing; she felt it safe to assume her presence
continued to be unknown.
She slipped
into the room, cursing her Mary-Jane’s and the slight clunking noise they
seemed determine to make. Once she was fully in the room, still scowling at her
feet and wondering if she did truly have a death wish to even think of
intruding on this private mans solitude. To her surprise and shame, the large
door slammed shut behind her causing her to let out a tiny shriek of at the
unexpected loud noise. It was then that she realized that the music still
hadn’t faltered.
Hermione
let out a relieved sigh, Draco had probably cast a deafening charm while
playing –which wasn’t uncommon for wizard musicians to do in an attempt to help
keep the pitch. All they could hear was the music, and nothing else.
“Finally decided to come in tonight, eh book-worm.”
Then again, maybe not.
“Uh…yes.
Well I mean no. Well actually-” Hermione babbled. The speech she had rehearsed
certainly hadn’t included him knowing she sat outside the door listening to him
play night after night.
He said
nothing, until the final notes of the piece were completed. He turned his body
slowly, and leisurely; only a Malfoy would make it look graceful, and looked
into the darkness of the room. The only light was emitted from a single candle
lantern sitting on the top of the piano.
Draco’s
eyes narrowed just to the right of where she was standing. “Take off the bloody
cloak.”
When she made
no move to acquiesce the request, Draco rolled his eyes in a most undignified
manner “You already spoke Granger, and I know when you’re here or not.” He
growled.
“Fine.”
She snapped, knowing he was right. Once the cloak was off and safely folded to where
you could find it again, she stood staring back at the unflinching gaze he held
her with.
“Well, have
at it Granger.” Draco said with a wave of his hand. “What do you want?”
Not being
able to help it, she bristled under his off handed tone. “Absolutely
nothing from you, you rude prat!”
Not
affected in the least by the insult, Draco raised a brow in a mocking gesture
–something Hermione knew she’d have to practice in front of the mirror to
perfect.
“You want
absolutely nothing, so you sneak out of our dorms to come down here, under
Potters invisibility cloak for shits and giggles?” He asked,
the sarcasm he was so well known for dripping from every word.
Hermione
huffed, opened her mouth to say something about twitchy and ferrets, but
snapped it shut when she remembered her missions for the night. She took a deep
breath and asked: “I was wondering if you would give me lessons on the piano.”
Not giving him a chance to nay-say it or not she continued on, blurting, “I can
pay you, if you’d like.”
Draco said
nothing for a long moment. Just simply stared at the brown
haired witch.
“Well?” she
demanded, hands on her hips. Hating to be pinned under his look, not knowing
what was going through the Slytherin’s mind.
“Why?”
“Why? Why what?” She asked.
“Why the
sudden want to learn the piano?” He asked, using that disinterested voice he
used when partaking in conversation with first years.
“Oh.”
Hermione blushed at her curtness. “Well my family is having a reunion over the
break, and my uncles were all talking about how talented their children are at
the arts and my father –Merlin knows why- said that I was an excellent piano
player and that I would put on an exceptional performance for them.”
“I see.”
Draco said, rubbing his chin. “But you don’t play the piano.” He added with a
frown.
“Well yes.”
She responded in aspiration, “Hence the need to learn.”
That damn
brow rose again. “Then why did your father say that you could?”
“I don’t know!”
she threw her arms in the air. “I received an owl this afternoon that he
expected me to learn some pieces to perform at the reunion and that he had no
doubt that I could, given that I am so bright academically.”
“So you
immediately run to me?” he paused to chuckle at the idea for a minute. “Why not
just use a music charm to learn.”
The look of
utter horror on her face caused the blond to laugh even harder. “That would be
cheating!”
Draco just
shook his head, not knowing how he hadn’t seen that coming. “Teaching you would
take up a lot of my time.”
“I said I
would pay you.” Hermione huffed. At least
he hadn’t said no outright though, she thought.
“Why would
I possibly need your money?” He asked tut-ing at her
like a small child.
“Then you
can do it out of the goodness of your heart.” She said with a roll of her eyes.
“Hmm, we’ll
see.” He drawled, “I’ll think of something you can do for me in the future.”
“Fine, just
don’t make it disturbing. And it can’t have anything to do with my friends!” She
said, wary of what he may think of.
“I’m not
going to make you drown kittens, honestly Granger, you must think very little
of me.”
“On the
contrary, I don’t think of you at all.”
Draco’s
face went blank for a moment, before shaking his head and narrowing his eyes at
her.
“What?”
Hermione asked, raising her hands in surrender, “It’s a quote from a movie, I
wasn’t being series!”
Draco’s
face went blank once more, before he said, “Mo-vie”
Hermione
slapped her self mentally; of course he wouldn’t know what that was. He hadn’t
taken muggle studies and had probably never heard of one before. “Sorry, it’s a
muggle thing.”
“Right.
Well that’s as well and good but back to the matter at hand.”
“When would
you like to start? Since I’m the one that propositioned you.”
Hermione wanted to get back to the common room to give Harry his cloak back.
Draco
smirked at her choice of words. “Tomorrow night. Witching Hour.”
