All the
mistakes you see belong to me. I have an awful habit of touching up chapters
after my lovely Beta, Olweneleanor, checks them over.
She rocks my socks!
This is my

Flames or constructive criticism - I'm not particular. Thanks!
Chapter 2 –
Unforeseen Complications
Hermione
pulled her hood more tightly around her face and stepped through the entrance
and walked into something solid. As she looked up and into the glittering
obsidian eyes of her Potions Professor.
Hermione paused, trying to think of an excuse for her presence in an
apothecary that specializes in items made for the Dark Arts, before remembering
that she didn’t look like Hermione Granger, Gryffindor extraordinaire.
“Excuse me,
sir,” she growled as she made to sidestep him and move into the shop. As she
moved to his side his pale hand shot out and grasped her arm tightly. He
pointed his wand at her and stared into her eyes.
“Who are
you?” He queried. As she made to move away from him he quickly said, “Finite
Incantum.”
As her aging
spell was released she grasped her wand and whispered, “Defluo.”
He gasped and
then scowled at her. “Miss Granger.”
She jerked
her arm free and stood, in the moment before her spell took effect, staring at
her Potions Master angrily in all of her Gryffindor glory. As the spell took
effect and made her disappear she ran into the darkened streets of Knockturn Alley. Her shoes were clicking loudly as she ran
as fast as she could towards the streets of Diagon Alley.
As she ran
from her furious professor Hermione tried to think of the quickest way to get
to the Quidditch shop. She ran out next to Gringotts and paused, stopping to
catch her breath and let her heartrate slow. She
leaned against the wall gasping. ‘That was too close. What was Snape doing
there? Oh no. Merlin’s knickers! He saw me!’
After
catching her breath Hermione decided that the safest bet would be to get to the
Quidditch shop and make sure everyone made it back to Mrs. Weasley safely. She
walked up to the window of the shop and looked inside. She saw Ron’s red hair
over in the corner with the broom repairing equipment, but as she glanced
around she couldn’t find Harry.
As she was
about to head into the shop she felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand
up. She turned around and looked through the crowds near the shop and paused at
the entrance to the alley next to Flourish and Blotts.
She didn’t see anyone, but somehow she knew that someone was there.
She slipped
through the crowds towards the entranceway and stepped into the shadows. She
put her back flush against the stone wall as she cautiously crept deeper into
the darkness. She slipped into the first alcove as she noticed a tall and
shadowy figure standing against a doorway, like a sentinel. She crept closer,
as quietly as possible, and saw the silver mask. She sucked her breath in
through her teeth and the noise made the guard stand up rigidly and peer
through the darkness nervously.
She slowly
crept back against the stone wall across from the doorway, trying to avoid detection.
She grasped her wand tightly without bothering to pull it out of her robes, and
pointed it towards the Death Eater, whispering, “Mortis prognatus
sopor.”
The Death
Eater dropped to the ground and Hermione crept over. She crouched next to the
limp body and started digging through his robes, taking his wand and a
parchment found in the inner pocket of his cloak. She pulled his body into the
darkened alcove and made her way back towards the Quidditch shop.
Hermione made
her way into the restrooms of the Quidditch shop and released the invisibility
spell. She headed out into the shop and immediately spotted Harry and Ron.
“Harry. Ron.”
She said as she nodded at both boys. “I need to find Ginny.”
Harry rushed
at her and grasped her tightly into a hug. “Oi, Hermione you are a sight for
sore eyes.” He then whispered into her ear, “Ginny is at Flourish and Blotts with Luna.”
“Thanks
Harry.” She stood on her tip toes and whispered in his ear, “I took care of a
Death Eater in the alley, but it’s probably not entirely safe. I couldn’t get
what I needed for the project. Tomorrow I’ll give you my things at the station
and I will just have to apparate to Hogsmeade when
the train arrives to head to school. I need to get the items here; they don’t
have a shop like that in Hogsmeade.”
“Okay
Hermione.”
Hermione gave
Harry a wink and headed out the doorway toward the bookstore.
Severus Snape
was surprised by very few things in the world. It was probably related to
having been a spy for more than half of his life, but it was also due to his
ability to notice things that no one else saw. But when he saw Hermione
Granger, Gryffindor know-it-all, and the brains of the Golden Trio, he was
shocked beyond belief. Who would have ever imagined spotting someone who lived
for rules inside a secret apothecary that only sold items used for dark
purposes?
‘I should
have seen it coming,’ he mused to himself. ‘She is strikingly similar to me, when
I was a teenager.’ The simple thought that there was more to know in the
world had driven him to devour every book he could get his hands on: light or
dark, good or bad, it didn’t matter. Knowledge in itself is not evil; it is its
use that defines it.
Most wizards
did not see the world that way – it took more intelligence than most seemed to
have to realize that the world was not black and white. Dumbledore himself took
over eighty years and a war that involved muggles and wizards before he
realized the necessity of the grey area. But somehow this muggle-born
Gryffindor had realized this, before she had even matured completely. ‘I
must have underestimated her. She obviously has the mental capabilities to
understand the workings of war and to discern the inner workings of the human
mind. Not to mention her skill at reading situations and finding the safest way
out. Hmmm… I wonder how she managed to vanish like
that…’
Not to be
outdone, Severus Snape quickly made his way towards Diagon Alley. ‘Eventually
Miss Granger will make her way here towards the remaining two-thirds of the
Gryffindor Trio. I will then catch her unawares and have a talk with her.’
Hermione made
her way through the crowds, ducking and dodging the flailing limbs of shop
patrons in mid tale, seemingly inching her way to the bookstore. She heard some
noises, seemingly gunshots, but as she looked she saw several large and looming
figures appear in their black cloaks and silver masks.
Pandemonium
ensued and people were soon screaming and running in all directions. She saw
the Death Eaters shooting all colours of spells at
the patrons of the shops along Diagon Alley.
“Find the
traitor. Our Lord will not wait for retribution.” the tall Death Eater drawled . He strode along, cockily aiming his wand and
shooting coloured beams of light at anyone that got
in his way.
Hermione saw
the shadowy figure of her Potions Professor sneaking towards the carts lined up
near the entranceway of the apothecary. She watched as the Death Eaters all
turned in tandem to where Severus Snape stood.
“Professor
Snape!” she yelled, horrified. She ran across the street and pointed her wand
at him. He glanced about looking for her, but stopped as a spell grazed his
ear. He put his hand up and touched it, vaguely distracted by the blood that
was on his hands. ‘No time for that now,’ he thought. He pointed his
wand at the Death Eaters, intent on taking out as many of them as he possibly
could before his own life was taken.
“Defluo,”
she whispered. She was admiring her handiwork when, all of a sudden, she felt
an incredible pain in her chest. Then she was falling towards the ground, its
darkness enveloping her like a perversely comforting embrace.
