Chapter
One
It should come as no surprise, that
when stuck in a stuffy boarding school, whether magical or muggle, boys will
find themselves in a fair amount of trouble. However whilst most would content
themselves to harmless pranks, brought for a reasonable price, these particular
four where not like that. They plotted and schemed, and slowly nurtured a plan
of absolute chaos together in whatever little time limit they set themselves,
and usually to greatness. And they
called themselves the marauders.
Usually the plans began with little
fanfare and in the most normal of circumstance: a bit too much homework, a
cancelled weekend out, too much time on their hands, and of course revenge.
However the best plots came about when Remus Lupin would storm up the stair,
flying through the door and letting it smash shut behind him, the crack like
gunfire, as he snarled about whatever had managed to break his composure. Not
unlike now.
Sirius just sat crossed legged and
watched, hearing sharp to pick up whatever garbled hints he could. James
lounged across his mattress; grin growing as he imagined Sirius’ latest
response to whatever had ruffled Remus, whilst Peter stood wide eyes and a
little scared.
“Stupid, stu-…….blasted……” He kicked
at the nearest object, which just happened to be the leg of a bed, hopping
slightly as he scowled, his mumbling rant never
ceased. “Buggering bas-……..frecking Snape.”
There it was. Sirius beamed with joy
and leapt up from his bed and pulled Remus from his pacing, ducking under the
wide swung arm, he retched until they tumbled together on the bed. His fingers
squeezing as he lent close.
“Oh Remus, I have a brilliant idea.”
And like that, they were scheming. James rolling onto his
stomach and pulling himself closer to the edge, his grin obscenely large.
Peter darting close, before pulling away.
Paper flew as James crumpled
rejected plans, his quill dancing over the stack of paper he had pulled from
beneath his bed. Sirius zapping each before they hit the ground, ash hitting the ground to be cleared up by the house elves
later, before finally Remus grinned in pleasure. And as always that would be
the chosen one.
“So what do we need?” James looked
predatory hunched over his pad of paper, quickly pushing up his glasses, quill
posed and waiting.
“Something to make his hair scarlet
and after that we can spell his clothes.”
“What will we do this time? We’ve
already given him every other uniform, we’ve messed with the colours, and we’ve
even spelled them away. What’s left?”
Remus sat up and his eyes glittered
with glee, “We haven’t done cross dressing yet.”
It was surprising no one thought of
Remus was the most devious, but he always put in the final detail that
guaranteed their scheme would be gossiped about for weeks after.
Sirius jumped up with a gasp, “Oh Remus!” He pulled the smaller boy up and
swung him around. “We just have to go all the way with this one. Gaudy make-up, cheap plastic jewellery, slutty clothes.” He
tone wistful, eyes distant as the idea came together in his head.
“We’ll have to create the spell; I
doubt there’s anything in the library, even in the restricted section.” James
scribbled some more notes down. “And we’ll probably have to stick to spells;
you know how good Snivellus is with potions.” James grimaced; the slight
concession to Severus Snape’s skills pained him.
“No problem.” Sirius ceased his
chaotic dancing, and Remus let out a sigh as he shook his head, trying to stop
the room from spinning. “Anything for Moony.”
“Peter and I will work on the spell,
whilst you and Remus can check the books, who knows maybe we’ll strike lucky.”
James stood up and with a quick flick of his wand and muttered verse; the list
in his hand was duplicated and he passed the second sheet to Sirius. “Best get
started.” And the boys separated, Sirius tugging Remus behind him down the
stairs through the Common room and out of the portrait hole.

The Library was unsurprisingly
quiet, unlike rowdy state schools where you could here the library before you
could see it, public schools retained a stunning silence, but boarding schools
were uncomfortably still, and the librarians were always creepy. However the
Hogwart’s librarian brought a whole new meaning to uncomfortable.
She stared as you walked in, and
even when she was out of view, you felt as if she could still see you. The
woman never smiled, or wore any bright clothing, just a drab grey cloak,
blending with her greying hair.
Despite all this Remus was beyond
comfortable in the library, and even the librarian’s perpetual scowl seemed to
lighten as he entered, before turning darker at the sight of Sirius, leaving
the elder boy with a chill down his spine.
“Damn old bat.” Shooting a glance
back at the woman, Sirius pushed Remus forward, urging him onwards out of view.
“Come on Moony. I can’t stand that
old biddy.”
With a put upon sigh, Remus led him
down one of the aisle. Standing on tiptoes, he pulled the nearest tome and
thrust it at the dark haired boy. “Have a look through this and quit whining.”
Grabbing a lighter one for himself, hoping that it
would take Sirius long enough with the larger text, for him to have time to get
some actual research completed.
Settling down at an empty table he
cracked open the volume at the contents (it seemed only a logical place to
start), and began scanning for anything that seemed even remotely linked to
what they wanted. He occasionally brushed at the pages, pushing away stubborn
dust whilst he read engrossed, unaware of Sirius’ increasing boredom, until it,
quite literally, smacked him in the head.
Batting at where the paper plane had
struck him, he scowled at Sirius, “Yes?” The other boy just blinked before
grinning at him. “Surely you can’t be finished already?” his eyes widened as
Sirius nodded sweetly at him. “Did you find anything?”
“Well, not really.” He lent forward,
resting his chin on his hands. “But I was thinking. You know the new Charms
professor?”
“Yes Professor Flitwick.” Rubbing at
the bridge of his nose, Remus just scowled harder. “But I don’t see what that
has to do with anything.”
“We covered glamour’s a few weeks
ago remember. Now surely all we need is one of those that we can modify a bit.”
He rolled his head to stare up at Remus from under his fringe. “After all we
just need it to last long enough to humiliate the bugger.”
Remus smiled back, eyes glinting.
“And I think I know just the books we need.”
He shoved his book at Sirius as he stood, “Pop those away will you.” And darted off.

It took Remus a few hours to find
his way back to the Gryffindor Common room, a small book clutched tightly in
his hands. He didn’t even acknowledge words of greeting of his housemates as he
hurried through the room and up the stairs.
Slamming the door shut behind him,
he joined the boys gathered on James’ bed. “Sorry it took me so long. Evan’s
was still in Transfigurations.”
“Lilly?” James perked up, and
instinctively pulled at his tie.
“She’s not here now, you egit.”
Sirius plucked the book from Remus. “Cosmetic Charms: for the
witch in need. Remus, why the hell did you get this?”
“I don’t know about you, but I never
learnt how to do makeup.” Flipping open the book at
the required page, he continued. “This one will stay on till the counter spells
cast, so even if the clothes don’t last the makeup and hair will.”
“Perfect.” James began to mimic the
wand movements the book illustrated as Peter scribbled down the words, which
undoubtedly James would copy up later. “Now, more importantly, what did you say
to get Lilly to give you this? And did she mention me?”
“I told her Sirius had a spot.”
Ignoring the spluttering squawk of his outraged
friend, “And that he didn’t want to cancel a date, so did she know anything
that might help.”
“But did she say anything about me?”
“James, believe me when I tell you,
you don’t want to know.”
“Just tell me.”
“She said to tell my annoying little
mate to leave her the bloody hell alone or she’ll pants you in the dinner hall.
Oh and to have back you disgusting little card.” Peter stifled his snorting
laughter as James’ jaw dropped. Remus just offering James a
sympathetic look, as he offered the torn blackened remains of a small yellow
card. The taller boy’s wand clattering to the ground, moments before
Sirius tumbled off the bed in an uncontrollable fit of laughter.
