The cottage that Harry purchased in Godric’s Hollow was completely unknown to everyone but her. Ginny Weasley, the girl Harry loved above all others hadn’t even know the location of his home, for her own safety, as he told her. Harry had enlisted the help of Dobby and Winky the house elves to assist him in his day to day life. Dobby, ever faithful to the boy who gave him his freedom, perished along side him in the fight but Winky remained to care for his home in his absence. Winky cried for days when Hermione told her of the fate of her employer and friend. Hermione wanted to feel sorry for her but she had no sorrow or pity to give.
It took Hermione only a short time to get settled in. If she had use for memories it would have been more difficult. Neville helped her clear out Harry’s old things and move in her own. She made Neville Longbottom her secret keeper only because he helped save her life and he was one of the few left that she knew well enough. It wasn’t trust. She trusted no one. She needed him, but not as a lover or as a friend. He could be useful to her, and nothing more. Hermione made those things very clear to Neville.
Her first night spent there was filled with broken sleep and horrible dreams. She was tossing and turning, crying out in fits of weeping. Neville came in and tried to comfort her. When he touched her, she was on her feet is a second and backed up into a dark corner of the room. She had her wand in her hand pointed at his heart.
“HOW DARE YOU TOUCH ME,” she screamed with a wild look in her eye, “GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS HOUSE!” He could see that she was deadly serious. He never expected that kind of reaction. He was just trying to comfort her. It angered him a bit…
“You’ve changed,” Neville said as he backed out of her room.
Hermione glared at him with a look of such anger and darkness that it made him shrink with fear. The scar that ran around her neck and the patch that covered her right eye were the most obvious changes. It was the scars that no one could see that did the most damage.
“You’re damn right I’ve changed,” she spit as she charged from the darkened corner, “and if you know what’s good for you you’ll do as you’re told and keep your mouth shut or I’ll hunt you down and cut your heart from your chest and show it to you before you die.” She was standing less than an inch from him, her wand clutched in her steady, tight fist, her perfect white teeth clenched, her face contorted with rage, daring him to move or speak.
Even though Neville Longbottom towered over Hermione, he was terrified of her. He simply nodded as he looked at the floor. His subservient response satiated her anger to the point that she allowed him to remain but with a dire warning. “If you ever try to touch me again…I’ll kill you where you stand, understood?” Neville said nothing but nodded fervently still looking at the floor. He made a mental note never to breach subjects such as love or trust ever again. Besides…love can blind and brutal sometimes…and he loved her even though he knew it would never be returned. She did not ask him to stay or force him. She didn’t really want him there. He stayed of his own choice. He would die for her. His only wish was that he could see her smile again like she used to but he also knew that the old Hermione was dead, so he had to settle for simply being close to her.
The cottage that Harry left behind was an amazing place. From the front porch you could see the entire valley far below. From the back you could see the mountains that ringed Godric’s Hollow. The cabin itself was warm and cozy. It had 2 bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms on either end of the house. In the middle at the front was a large great room with a large fireplace in the front right corner. The back center part of the house had the kitchen on the left, another larger storage room in the middle and the room on the right, next to Hermione’s room was once her most favorite place on earth.
It served as Harry’s office when he was there, but it was a library…but…not just any library. Harry told her once that the original owner of the house had been the History of Magic Professor at Hogwarts many years ago. He created the library as a place for reference for his work. It was an enchanted place. Every inch of wall that was not covered by a window or a door was covered with shelves of books from floor to ceiling. There was a small round table in the center of the room. If you wanted to find a subject, any subject, all you had to do was stand in the room and say the name of the subject and dozens of books would fly off the shelves and stack themselves neatly and in alphabetical order on the round table in the middle of the room.
But that was not the only secret the room possessed. Hermione believed the library contained access to every book ever written. All you had to do was say a subject or title and it would appear on the shelf. If you pulled a book from a shelf, it was immediately replaced by another volume from behind, even though the shelves were only deep enough to contain one book… Hermione had spent an entire weekend simply browsing shortly after he moved in. It was…nirvana to her.
Now…it was just another room that contained the things that Harry had left behind. She had unceremoniously moved all his belongings in there, then closed and sealed the door. She made it very clear to Neville that he was to never go in there. Books were no longer much use to her. None of those things mattered to her any more. All she cared about was the location of the cottage was virtually unknown and offered a 360 degree view to see her enemies coming.
