Katrianna boarded the train and, with a
single trunk carrying her fourteen shrunken ones in her right hand, and a
purple Gucci pet-carrying bag with her black and white American Shorthair cat,
Keira, in her left, she headed straight for the last compartment. She was
hoping it would be empty so that she'd be able to peacefully get lost in her
own thoughts as she was often wont to do. No such luck: the carriage was
occupied by a small girl with straggly, waist-length, dirty-blonde hair who was
reading a magazine upside down. The girl turned her protuberant blue eyes away
from the magazine and onto her.
"Hello,"
the girl said with a look in her eyes that was so far away Katrianna was
tempted to look behind herself to see if she was perhaps speaking to someone
else. Instead she simply replied with a polite, "Hi," and placed her trunk on
the luggage rack. As she took her seat and set Keira's bag on the floor three
students appeared at the door of the compartment.
"Is
it okay if we take these seats?" asked a petite girl with flaming red hair. The
little blonde simply nodded and stared, as did Katrianna. One of the boys was
fairly goofy looking: crooked, protruding teeth in a big round head, and
clownish big feet. The second boy, on the other hand, was kind of cute. He was
tall and thin (more lean than skinny, actually) and his hair was sticking up in
the back " messy in an attractive way. As he turned from stowing his trunks in
the luggage rack, they caught each other's eye and he smiled at her. Katrianna
suddenly found herself staring into the most brilliant pair of (naturally)
green eyes she'd ever seen.
"You're Harry Potter," the strange little
girl said suddenly, breaking into Katrianna's thoughts. That's when she noticed
the lightening bolt shaped scar on his forehead.
Harry's
smile fell immediately as he noticed the cute girl's expression change. *Great* he thought. *No doubt she believes everything she's read in the Daily Prophet*
"I know I am," he replied a little defensively as he took his seat.
The
goofy-looking boy chuckled and the little girl turned to him. "And I don't know
who you are."
"I'm
nobody," the boy replied quickly.
At
this, the red-headed witch spoke up. "No you're not. Neville Longbottom. Luna
Lovegood." Then she turned to Katrianna. "I'm Ginny Weasley, and this Harry,
but we've already covered that."
"Katrianna
Clover. But everyone usually calls me Kaycee. I just moved here from America."
"What
year are you?" Ginny asked.
"Fifth."
"Have
you been sorted yet?" this time it was Harry who asked.
Kaycee
smiled attractively at him, "Yeah, at the beginning of the summer. I'm in
Ravenclaw."
"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest
treasure," Luna announced in a sing-song voice before disappearing behind
her upside-down magazine once again.
Katrianna
looked to Ginny questioningly. "Luna's in Ravenclaw also," at this, Kaycee's
eyes widened slightly, but Ginny just continued. "Luna and I are fourth years;
Neville and Harry are with you. But we're in Gryffindor," she indicated herself
and the two boys.
As
the train rattled on Katrianna pulled out a book on faeries' habitats and began
to read, so she wouldn't have to get involved in anyone's conversation. It
wasn't that she was unfriendly, but she didn't really know these people, and
she wasn't the type of girl to start spilling her life story to a bunch of
strangers " especially since they weren't even in her own house.
About
an hour and a half into the trip, and half way through Katrianna's book, they
were joined by fifth years Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, the Gryffindor
prefects. After everyone had been introduced, they started settling in more
comfortably.
"Well,
there are two fifth-year prefects from each House," said Hermione, and cute but
slightly frumpy looking girl with a thick mane of brown hair.
"And
guess who's a Slytherin prefect," add Ron who looked a lot like his sister with
his flaming hair and freckles.
"Malfoy,"
Harry replied immediately. At the sound of the familiar name, Katrianna
immediately began to pay closer attention to the conversation, not caring
enough to hide it.
Harry
noticed the girl's sudden awareness of the conversation, but refrained from
commenting. He also noticed how, when Pansy Parkinson was mentioned,
Katrianna's nose wrinkled as if she'd just smelled the foulest thing in the
world. It wasn't lost on Harry either that when the conversation didn't stay on
the subject of his school nemesis, that she went back to her book.
But
her attention was once again pulled from her reading when the compartment door
was opened for the third time. And standing there was the person that she had
most dreaded coming into contact with when coming to the school. She knew it
was inevitable, but so soon? He was taller than she remembered him being " well
of course he was, they had only been nine when they had met last. But it was
still so clearly him. The pale skin, the white-blonde hair, and, of course,
those eyes. Those eyes that had so often looked at her with unadulterated hate.
Those deep grey eyes that she could never forget. Yes it was him. So undeniably
Draco Malfoy. She looked up into those same eyes that had once haunted her
nightmares expectantly, waiting for the flicker of recognition.
"What?"
Harry said roughly, and Draco tore his gaze from hers, the short-lived
connection gone. But Katrianna didn't falter; she never took her eyes off of
him. He was different. Worse. She felt a strange tugging in the pit of her soul
and knew it was pity. His eyes were harder, colder, and so much like his
father's that it scared her to the base of her being. She listened to his voice
as he fell into a not-so-friendly banter with Harry. Even it was toughened. As
many horrible words that he had flung at her over the few years that she had
known him, he had never sounded this evil. It wasn't even necessarily the words
that were coming out of his mouth, because Merlin knew she'd heard him say
worse. No, it was more in the tone. That sickening, disgusting,
stomach-turning, just down right wicked sound
of his voice.
"Get
out!" said Hermione firmly as she stood. And he was gone.
"Katrianna,"
Harry said some time later as they were standing on the platform, he carrying
Pigwidgeon, Ron's owl, and she carrying both Keira and Crookshanks.
"Harry,"
she replied simply, this time with out the flirty smile " she had too much on
her mind now.
He
simply looked at her for a minute and then seemed to decide something. "Never
mind."
