Draco recognized
the place he now found himself in; it was hard to forget Azkaban. The place was
in chaos, wizards falling left and right, Dementors leaping upon the fallen
wizards. Draco saw through another’s eyes, but that wasn’t all. He was also see through another’s mind, someone who was already a
spectator, Harry’s. He found himself walking and realized that it was toward
his father’s cell. Anger flooded down the link he shared with Harry.
How could they lose to a group of children? Pathetic. The voice wasn’t one that he had heard before,
and it scared him. He arrived at the cell of Lucius Malfoy, Narcissa was also
there. The pair stood at his appearance.
“My
Lord.” They said in unison, heads bowed. Are you watching Harry? I could have easily saved them from being
arrested you know, but it was a test. A test they all failed. My greatest
minions fell to a group of children and Ministry idiots. Would you like to see
what happens to those that fail me? Draco felt a struggle, like Harry was
trying to get away, but failed. Draco realized whose eyes they were seeing
through.
He watched, unable
to close his eyes, or cover his ears, unable to get away as his parents were
killed by Voldemort. Even as he struggled, he was aware of the Harry’s
reaction. His own mother’s scream morphed into the scream of another, one he
guessed to be Harry’s mother, green light flooded his vision and a dark twisted
laugh filled his mind.
Draco shot up in
bed, and raced out of his dormitory. He had to see Harry,
he had to know if what he had seen was real. He raced toward the Hospital Wing,
somehow certain that Harry would be brought there.
“Mr. Malfoy, may I
ask what you are doing in the halls at this hour?” Draco flinched at the sound
of Dumbledore’s voice, stopping his progression and turning toward the
Headmaster. He internally debated what story he should use, but settled on the
truth.
“Harry Potter is
in the Hospital Wing, and there is something that I want…something that I need to ask
him. It’s urgent…sir.” He added the last in hopes that it would help his
argument.
“I was heading
there myself. May I join you?” Draco hid his surprise and gave a nod; he had a
feeling that he may have been sent back to his room if he hadn’t agreed. They
walked in silence the whole way and Draco had to ponder a silent Dumbledore. If
the man was quiet, it was usually because another was speaking. Now, though, he
said nothing, as though he knew the importance of the information that Draco
sought. There were already several people in the Infirmary when they arrived.
McGonagall, Snape, and Madam Pomfrey stood around the
bed of a barely conscious Harry. Draco
rushed to his bedside, ignoring the teachers and whispered his question into
the Gryffindor’s ear.
“Was it real?” The
scarred teen’s eyes widened, the surprise quickly morphed into pain, he had
hoped that Draco had not been pulled in, had not seen it. He closed his eyes
against the tears that formed and gave a nod. Horror overtook the blond, he had
held onto the hope that it hadn’t happened, that his troubled mind had created
the whole thing, but he gave into the pain now. His body collapsed; Professor
Snape caught him, but the blonde didn’t notice. His parents were gone, struck
down by the very man to whom they held allegiance. Harry retold the event to
the gathered staff, avoiding the questions of how Malfoy knew.
After a few more
questions, the teachers left the pair, deciding that it would be better if they
did not move either one at the moment. An hour later, after he had pulled
himself mostly together, Harry moved a chair next to the bed that Snape had put
Malfoy on. He opened his mouth to speak.
“Don’t. You don’t
understand, don’t say that you do. I’m going to get enough of that from
everyone else, I don’t need it from you.” Draco’s back
was to Harry and he kept it that way as he spoke in a clear indication that he
wanted the other boy to go away. However, the
Gryffindor couldn’t just sit there and watch Draco wallow in his pain, he knew
from experience that wallowing didn’t help.
“You’re right. I
don’t know what its like to lose a parent, let alone both. But I do know what it is
to lose someone you consider family, and I know what its like to live without
parents.” The image of Sirius flashed through both of their minds, bringing
more tears to Harry’s eyes. Draco finally turned to look at the green-eyed
teen. “I also know that you have to go on. They would want you to keep on
going. It’s hard and it hurts and it will continue to hurt, but you have to
live.” The looked at each other for a moment, then both burst out laughing.
“Could I have sounded more cheesy?”
“You could have
not meant it.” The boys eyes met again and Harry was
hit by double vision as he got the image of himself that Draco was seeing. The
emotions that accompanied the image raced through him. Gratitude became
Curiosity then turned into confusion and suspicion; there was something else
too, something more, but it was buried below the others and Harry couldn’t
quite catch it before they all faded from his mind. “Why do you care Potter? I
know I’m hot, but that is hardly a reason to console me.” Harry looked away and
didn’t give an answer, silence hung between the two until Draco broke it again.
“How was that possible, how could you see them?”
“I’m…linked to
Voldemort. Sometimes, if his emotions are strong, or more recently, if he wants
me to, I see what he sees.” Malfoy then asked a question that had never
occurred to Harry.
“Can he see, what you see?”
“I…I don’t know. I
was doing some Occlumency, but things happened and my lessons stopped.” He
wasn’t sure if he could trust Malfoy yet, and left Snape’s name out just
incase.
“What are you
doing sitting up? And talking? I won’t have you wake Rubeus,
if you feel that well you can both go to your dormitories.” Madam Pomfrey checked Harry’s pupils one last time, then handed
them chocolate and sent them out.
“Come on, there
won’t be a better chance to get these off.” Draco pulled Harry into a
classroom. Once inside with the door closed Harry turned his back to Draco and
lifted his arm as he had when the bracelet was put on his wrist. He held in the
shiver he knew would come at Draco’s proximity and had to bite back a gasp as
this time; he not only invaded Harry’s personal space, but stood pressed up
against him. The bracelets connected and then fell to the floor. Malfoy picked
them up silently and then turned to go. He was stopped by arms slipping around
his torso.
“What are you
doing Potter?” He pulled at the arms, but Harry didn’t budge.
“Have you ever
been hugged Malfoy? Really hugged?”
“That is none of
your bus…” The hug tightened and Malfoy felt true emotion through the hug. It
wasn’t a shallow embrace practiced for keeping up appearances, it was a real
hug.
“Everyone needs affection. Especially when they’re
hurting.” Harry had taken a huge chance, but he knew that keeping the
pain inside didn’t help anyone, least of all the one who held the pain. Harry’s
heart leapt when he felt Malfoy lean slightly into him.
Tentatively, Draco
rested his arms over his schoolmate’s. They stood there for what seemed like
forever in a comfortable silence. Neither had received much affection at all in
their lives and both were in mourning. Their rivalry did not stand a chance.
Finally, Harry pulled away. “We should get back to our rooms.” Malfoy nodded in
response. The two left the classroom and headed in opposite directions.
“Har…Potter.”
Draco was looking over his shoulder when Harry turned. “This changes nothing.”
Regardless of how
they intended to treat each other, things had changed between the teens. The
next day, on the way to breakfast, the trios encountered each other, but after
a simple glare, Harry and Draco simply walked to their respective tables.
Draco heard of his
parents’ death officially through his aunt Bellatrix.
He was called to Hogsmead just after breakfast and
excused from classes for the day.
“Don’t you see? We
were trying to get your father out. Your parents died,
because of the foolish, careless boy and his friends.” Draco sat quietly as she
spoke and blamed Harry for his parents’ death, knowing the truth. He played the
proper son of a Death Eater, but he didn’t have to play at his grief and anger.
He simply didn’t tell his aunt who his anger was directed at. “You will, of
course, spend the winter break with us.” She made to say more, but he
interrupted her.
“I will be spending
the break at Hogwarts.” He kept his face in a politely neutral expression. Either he had improved in reading people or his aunt
had become lazy, he saw the anger she had in reaction to his statement before
she was able to recover her calm.
“Don’t be
ridiculous, you need to be away with family. Why would you stay here?”
“My Godfather and
present legal guardian remains at Hogwarts for winter
break every year. You, of course, know Professor Snape.” Her hands clenched in
response and she was again unable to hide her anger.
“You can’t
seriously wish to stay with him? I’m sure that, with your support, some legal
work can be done that would give custody to your uncle Rudolphus
and I.” She attempted to smile sweetly at him, but the expression looked out of
place on her. Draco put his teacup down and stood up.
“My parents
entrusted Professor Snape with my safety, and I will not go back on their
decision.” He did not add that she could keep her money grubbing hands to
herself and she wasn’t getting anywhere near the Malfoy fortune, but reigned in
his anger. It wouldn’t due to destroy appearances.
By the time Draco
reached the castle it was lunch, but he did not want to see his housemates.
Instead, he made his way to the dungeon, where he knew that he could find the
one person he could talk to.
“Mr. Malfoy, I
thought that you would be with your aunt at this time.” Professor Snape sat in
his office, where Draco knew he took his lunch whenever he had the chance.
“I’ve just
returned. She and I had a disagreement.” Draco took a seat across from his
Godfather; he knew that he wouldn’t be offered a seat.
“She has a
tendency to engage in disagreements with most people she speaks with. What was
this one over?” The professor made a gesture and a house elf appeared. He
ordered for a meal to be brought down for Draco, and the student waited until
the elf was gone before he answered.
“She wishes for me
to spend the upcoming break with her; I disagreed and explained to her that my
plans are to remain here. She also hoped to contend your custody of me. I
refused to assist her in that endeavor. Profess…Uncle Severus,
can we please drop this? I’ve had a hard two days and would like to relax.”
Snape looked surprised, but gave a nod and moved to a pair of more comfortable
chairs near his fireplace. “Is this room safe?”
“Completely,
from both sides.” Draco sighed, and then asked his question.
“Which side do you
work for, truly? I know that you do works for both, that you have killed those
on both sides of this war, but where do you stand? I…I need to know.” Severus Snape looked his godson over critically.
“No one knows for
certain which side I am on save myself, Draco.” He
studied the student for another moment. “You want to be certain that you can
trust me.”
“Yes.”
“Draco, when it
comes to the final battle, I will stand on the Dark Lord’s side, but my support
and my efforts will be for the boy.” He watched Draco’s reaction calmly.
“Why?” The
question slipped out and Draco wanted to retract it, but he wanted to know the
answer, he thought that it would help with his own confusion about what he
needed to do now.
“For
the same reason that most people choose only to fight only on one side, it is
the way I know how. It is the best way that I can help. Young Mr. Potter needs
to learn not to trust as easily as he does, and he needs to learn that not
everyone is how they seem.” Draco’s lunch arrived, but he had very little
appetite. He had too many things running through his head. “Why did you need to
know?”
“Yesterday,
when Potter and I were in the woods, we had to use the Geminery rings in order
to get out of the forest and bring the half-giant with us." Draco paused, and took a steadying breath before continuing. "That was how I knew
that my parents were dead; I was with him in Voldemort’s
head. Uncle Sev, I…I watched him kill my parents. I
couldn’t do anything except watch and listen as they died, and then that cow
had the gall to say that they had tried to save my parents but were unable to.
She blamed their deaths on Harry.” Draco surged to his feet, unable to hold his
energy in. “I’m confused now, I always knew that I would take the Dark Mark one
day. I had even looked forward to it, no matter how much my mother encouraged
me to wait and really think about what I was getting into. Now,” He collapsed
into his chair, suddenly exhausted. He rested his head in his hands, hoping to
hide his tears. “Now I want nothing to do with this war or that munter who
calls herself my family. And I do not want to ever see that monster who calls
himself a wizard. He laughed as he killed them, Uncle Sev.
He laughed.” A touch on his shoulder made him raise his head. Snape had stood
without Draco noticing and now stood directly in front of the teen, but he
wasn’t looking at him. He was looking at the wall to Draco’s left; the blond
stared at him a moment. The professor glanced at Draco, then back to the wall
and cleared his throat. Draco didn’t need any more prompting and projected
himself at his godfather, wrapping his arms around him and crying into his
robes. Even though he had encouraged the action Snape was still a little taken
back, but he recovered fairly quickly and wrapped one arm around his ward.
I hoped you enjoyed the second
chapter of “as per unusual”. I’m not sure when the next one will come as my
muse has died; we are trying the defibrillator, but we’re having technical
difficulties. My back-up muse has also decided to runaway with my
plot-bunny. I expect that they are
somewhere near Fresno
or where ever you go when you run away with someone. I don’t know when to
expect either one to be back in service.
