Title: Find A Word
Rating: PG-13
Warning: Swear Words.
Pairing: Harry x Draco, Hermione x Ron
Author’s Notes: Sorry this chapter hadn’t gone up on Thursday
like I said it would, my computer had been mucking up and refused to start, so
it’s been away for repairs and I’ve only just gotten it back.
I’ve just realized that I forgot to
mention what’s with the ‘Find a Word’. Honestly it is nothing big, nothing
important. It is just a small dare to myself to start
each chapter with the find a word and end each chapter with it… It’s just a
small challenge. Also the word he is searching for is involved within the
chapter somehow… so it’s a hint to you on what to expect within the chapter…
Make any sense?
Anyway, thank you for the reviews. I
hope you all enjoy this chapter.

Chapter
Two: Communication
Tapping
his quill rhythmically on the small book, Draco sighed as he once again looked
through the find a word. Once again he was finding himself stuck on a word, and
once again it was a long word that he couldn’t find.
‘Communication’
how hard could it be to find that word? It had a double ‘M’ that should be easy
to spot!
Groaning
the blonde picked the book up and threw it easily across his room and onto
Goyle’s bed.
He
was too tired to be concentrating on finding some stupid words. He had been up
all night, restless.
Potter
was acting weird and last night he decided to find out why. Potter wanted to be
chummy with him, there had to be some other plan behind the whole chummy thing, no one would approach
someone they had been fighting with for seven years almost and just declare a
truce and attempt friendship, which just didn’t work, not in his book.
Pansy
might see the whole proposal as a good sign but he didn’t. He wasn’t about to
let down his defences, not yet.
“Draco,
you ready?” Pansy called as she pocked her head around the corner of the door.
Pushing
himself off his bed and brushing his robes down to fall into their proper
alignment, Draco raised a brow at his friend. “You know one of these days
you’re going to walk in here and see something you won’t like” he stated as he
grabbed his bag and threw it over his shoulder.
Winking
the girl stepped back for him to pass. “I don’t think there is something I could walk in on that I won’t
like” she said as she looked him up and down casually with a smirk.
“You’re
sick”
Snickering
the girl waved for the others to join her as they made their way towards the
exit.
“Hey,
Draco, are you looking forward to lunch?” Blaise suddenly asked in a lacy voice
and a mischievous grin on his face, his dancing brown eyes on his blonde
friend.
From
the moment he agreed to meet Potter in the library he had gotten nothing but
teasing from his friends, all in that same lacy voice. Goyle even had the nerve
to make kissing noises followed with imitations of himself
and Potter saying sweet nothings to one another. He suspected Goyle was going
to be released from hospital ward sometime today.
“If
you’re not careful Zabini, the same
thing that had befallen Goyle will happen to you” he warned as he walked up the
stairs and entered the first floor.
“That
was a little harsh though Draco, don’t you think a simple boil hex would have
sufficed?” Pansy asked as she brushed some of her fringe away.
Draco
shook his head. “Goyle disserved what he got, and I’m not afraid to do the same
to anyone else that crosses my path” he stated, making sure he met Blaise’s
eyes. The teen only winked at him.
“You
never did that to me” another voice pipped in, making Draco look over his
shoulder.
Potter
walked down the stairs and stopped in front of the small group, Weasley and
Granger on either side of him.
Scoffing,
Draco rolled his eyes. “Don’t tell me you’re jealous?”
Chuckling the Gryffindor shook his head. “Anything
but jealous. More relieved actually” he stated as he smirked.
“Mate,
lets go” Weasley whined as he readjusted his backpack, “I’m starving”.
Draco
didn’t miss Granger shooting the red-head a glare, shutting him up
sufficiently. Potter continued talking to him. “May I ask what Goyle did to
disserve such a… transformation?” he asked curiously.
Fighting
off a small blush, Draco glared at him. “He was being a wanker
that stuck his nose in business that didn’t involve him” he said, “So you
better watch it” he stated with a small smirk.
“Duly
noted”
Draco
raised a brow but couldn’t fight down the chuckle. “This is weird. I’m going”
he stated with a shake of his head and turning away, his gang following him as
he once again began to walk towards the great hall.
He
heard Potter chuckling in his wake and then he called out a reminder of their
library date, the only sign Draco showed of hearing him was a wave over his
shoulder before he vanished around the corner of the corridor, and when he did
he was once again faced with his gangs teasing.
Replacement
friends weren’t that hard to find.
Entering
the Great Hall and making his way towards the Slytherin table, Draco ignored
his friends and the knowledge that Potter and his gang had just entered as he
sat down at the end of the table.
“You
know Draco, this might just be the start of a great friendship” Blaise teased, making the blonde throw him a
glare before he promptly began to ignore him.
Pansy
and the rest of the gang snickered at the teens joke. Draco on the other hand
was not amused and began to scan the table for suitable replacements. He had
just spotted a girl in his grade who seemed suitable
enough to replace Pansy and was starting to look for a replacement for Blaise
when said boy pattered his shoulder.
“Mail”
he stated, bringing the blonde from his search.
Looking
up he saw his falcon – a bird that he had gotten only last year for his
birthday, seeing as his old eagle-owl had fallen ill and passed away a few
weeks before his birthday. The reason he liked his falcon – Sherita – was
because she was an ‘American peregrine falcon’, one of his uncles had imported her over from
America because when he lived in America and had gone to school there he had
claimed that his American peregrine falcon had been irreplaceable, and so he
wanted to give the best to Draco.
Landing in front of him,
Sherita held out her leg for her master to access the parchment tide to her.
Untying and then unrolling
the letter, Draco scanned over the words before rolling his eyes and chucking
it over to the always curious Pansy.
“Oh! This is great Draco!”
She cried as she read over the letter.
“Is it another
invitation?” Blaise asked as he chewed his breakfast and talked, displaying a
sight Draco felt he could have lived without witnessing.
“Yeah, but this is to Merlins Academy for the Gifted” she stated in
awe as she showed everyone the parchment, making sure they each paid careful
attention to the letterhead.
“It
sounds like those muggles school… Those schools where handicapped people are
taken” he murmured as he snatched the parchment back. “And it’s all the way in Melbourne, that’s in Australia!! Why the hell are they
inviting me to attend their university? I didn’t even apply for them” he
grumbled with a shake of his head.
Folding
up the paper he shoved it into his pocket and then began to feed some bacon to
Sherita.
“I
think you’re very lucky to be receiving invitations from such high
universities” she stated as she shook her head.
“I’ve
already chosen where I’m going though, so I don’t need all this junk mail. All they are trying to do is suck up to me
because of my name and wealth” he stated.
Blaise
nodded, “Just think though, if you’ve gotten… what, ten invitations?” Draco
shrugged. “Then just think how many invitations Potter must be getting, every
university out there would want him at their campus” he stated, “I wouldn’t be
surprised if he’s gotten job offers as well” he stated as he forked some more
food into his mouth.
Draco
chose to ignore him; the last thing he wanted was getting back on the topic of
Potter.
“You
know Draco” Pansy began, in that same tone that could only mean trouble.
“Potter’s been looking over this way occasionally for the past ten minutes now”
she stated, smirking when Draco’s head snapped up and his gaze shot over
towards the Gryffindor table.
She
was right.
Potter
was looking over at him, he raised a brow, obviously wondering what caused him
to suddenly look over to him, and then he gave the boy a small smile and turned
back to his meal and happily chatting friends, acting as if nothing was wrong.
Scowling
the blonde looked down to his own table, ignoring the girl’s sinkers beside him
and Blaise’s comments.
Replacing
his friends had just moved up to top priority.
oOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
He
was nervous. Scratch that, he was very nervous
and he had no idea why. He was just going to study with Potter,
that was all. They were just going to sit in the library, books open and
sit at the same table in silence, why was he nervous?
Draco
glanced up to the clock that hung over Flitwick’s head, five minutes until the bell rang,
five minutes until he made his way towards the library and met up with Potter.
He
knew in some sense why he was nervous, but he didn’t understand why he was this nervous. His stomach was flipping
repeatedly, his heart rate was increasing with every move the second hand clock
made and his brow and hands were sweating, making him constantly wipe it off.
He
was in a mess!
In
his mind he was seeing every situation that could happen, ranging from complete
silence and awkwardness to throttling and killing each other. Things weren’t
looking pretty. Blaise’s suggestion continued to make its way into his mind.
What if this was some kind of prank?
What if this was one of Potter’s and his friends little ideas to make him look
like a fool?
If so, all Gryffindor’s would regret being
sorted into that house.
“You
looking forward to you’re romantic study time?” Pansy suddenly asked as she
leaned near him so that the Professor wouldn’t hear.
Draco
bit his lip and passed the girl a glare deciding to deal with her later.
This
was typical of his friends, they were always making his business their play
time. If he was doing one thing they would find something to tease him about,
if he was doing another thing they would find some way to tease him. It was
slowly getting annoying.
The
bell rang.
“Class
dismissed. Remember to study chapter ten! The test is next week!” Professor Flitwick called over the rustle of his students
packing up.
Draco
shoved his book into his bag, and ignoring Pansy he stood and picked up his bag
and left the room, not once bothering to slow down for her, even though she was
calling for him to, instead he could swear that if he were to turn around he’d
see her walking behind him with a smirk, this was the reason why he kept his
eyes forward and glare in place.
This
study break better be worth it!
“See
you in class Draco” Pansy called suddenly with her lacy voice that was now
starting to drive Draco mad.
He
ignored her and continued to make his way towards the library.
His
nervousness had lessoned somewhat as he approached the library, his palms
weren’t clammy anymore, his stomach wasn’t doing summersaults – although it was
now in a knot – and his hearts pace was at a reasonable rate.
He
entered the library.
“Mr
Malfoy!”
Draco
jumped.
Turning
around he spotted the librarian stalking towards him with a nasty twist to her
lips.
“Madam Pince” he addressed.
She
stopped in front of him and glared down at him past her long nose, her lips
were pursed close together, making them look a milky white colour. Obviously
she was somewhat unhappy about something.
“Does
Transfiguration in the four Nations, by
Louse Downing mean anything to you?” She hissed, saliva
flying from her lips, narrowly missing Draco.
Raising
a brow, Draco thought over the words that did seem to ring some kind of bell.
Madam
Pince didn’t seem to have any patients for him. “It’s a book that you checked
out of this library two months ago and have yet to
return!!” She almost screeched, suddenly she seemed to be towering over him.
Draco
remembered a cartoon he had once seen when he was five. Jimmy Neutron, a
cartoon about a twelve year old genius who created experiments that usually got
him in trouble. Very briefly Madam Pince reminded him of the teacher, Ms.
Winifred Fowl. This scared him, not only because he remembered Jimmy Neutron,
or because it was a muggle show he refused to tell anyone he had seen and
enjoyed, but because he could actually see the Professor in front of him as Ms.
Winifred Fowl.
“And,
when do you intend on returning my book?!” She continued in her screeching
voice. Her eyes seemed to darken by the minute; he wouldn’t be surprised if she
was holding herself back from physically attacking him.
“I’m
still reading it, I’ll return it this afternoon” he stated, just wanting to rid
himself of the lady, she was bringing attention onto himself.
Madam
Pince didn’t look happy as she thrusted her nose into the air. “Three o’clock
it is to be in the return shoot, if it’s not there by three o’clock I will be
writing a personal howler to you Mr Malfoy” and with that, the lady gave him
one last look before she turned and left.
Turning
away and walking further into the library – to get away from Madam Pince –
Draco found an empty table. He was just thankful that Potter hadn’t been in the
library to see the librarian’s explosion.
“Madam
Pince is really protective of her books” Potter suddenly stated as he dropped
himself into a seat opposite the startled blonde.
Draco
chose to ignore that comment. “You’re late” instead he decided to say, except
now he cringed when he realised that he sounded like a wife scolding her
husband.
Potter
paused in unpacking his bag and looked at him. “Hardly” he stated before taking
out the last three books.
Now
Draco decided that the safest thing to do was keep silent, or else he make a fool of himself again. Instead he unpacked his bag
and began to search through his text books, seeking out something that he could
get started on.
“What
class did you just have?”
Looking
up from the Potions book he had just pulled in front of him, the blonde looked
across the table. “Charms” he stated before looking back to the book.
Was
Potter trying small talk?
Silence
fell over the table as Potter also opened a book. Draco was just starting to
relax when suddenly something connected with his knee,
jumping back he looked under the table.
“Sorry.
I was stretching” Potter apologised as he lowered his hands and covered a yawn.
Raising
a brow the Slytherin sat back in his seat. “Don’t tell me that five minutes of
studying and you’re already going to fall asleep” he stated with a roll of his
eyes.
Rolling
his eyes in return and pushing his book to the side, Potter shook his head. “I
had a late night, so I haven’t really had much sleep, plus I just had Professor
Binns as a substitute teacher for Ruins” he admitted.
Draco’s
brows shot up. “You take Ruins?” He asked amazed.
The
Gryffindor nodded. “Yeah, Hermione talked me into it, plus I find it
interesting, once you get through all the translations and you know what
everything means, then it’s intriguing and you can get through lessons rather
quickly” he stated as he scratched the side of his neck.
The
blonde shook his head. “I never hooked you for taking Ruins of all lessons” he
stated.
Potter
rested his head in his hand. “Well, what classes do you take?” he asked,
genially looking interested.
Draco
sat back and raised his hand, counting the lessons off with each finger. “I
take Charms - Level Three, Advanced Potions, Animagus Transfiguration, Third
Level Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts –
Second Level and Arithmancy. What about you?” he
asked.
Tilting
his head to the side in thought, Potter began to tick them off, “Ruins,
Animagus Transfiguration, Potions - Level One, Transfiguration level three,
Advanced Charms and Advanced Defence Against the Dark
Arts” he stated with a final nod.
“You’re
still doing Potions?” Draco asked, shocked.
“Well
yeah… I’m just doing level one though, it’s not that important in my opinion, but I know it’s useful” he stated
with an offhanded shrug.
Chuckling,
Draco turned back to his book.
“What
are you going to do after school finishes?”
Looking
up at the next question, Draco saw the Gryffindor looking at him curiously.
After a small staring contest, the blonde shrugged and closed his book and slid
it to the side. “I’m going to France, I’m going to study a Potions degree and
then I’m coming back here to work under Professor Snape – as his apprentice for
two years, it will qualify me to a Potions Master if I out-pass all
expectations” he stated with a shrug, “What about you? I’ve heard three theory’s. You’re going to be an Auror, a professional
Quidditch player or a Teacher. Or the other one that’s not so popular since you
publicly declared homosexualism as the pole you lean on – was settling down
with into a family” he stated with a smirk.
By
the time he had finished his lists; Potter’s brows had risen and disappeared
beneath his fringe. “People have some strange ideas for my career path” he
murmured. “I was actually going to travel for a while, see the world and all
that. Then I was thinking of doing some short courses, learning other languages
and stuff… or maybe I’ll do that first and then travel. Then, once I finished
that I was going to settle back in England and probably look at becoming a
Professor for either Defence Against the Dark Arts or Quidditch” he stated. “It
depends on what I feel like doing by that time” he shrugged.
Draco
chuckled. “And here I was voting for the ‘settling down with a family’ theory”
he stated. “Potter, do you know how much it’ll cost to travel the world?” He
asked.
The
teen nodded, “I have enough” was all he said, and Draco didn’t doubt him as he nodded.
“So
are you just going to stay as a bachelor and carry out your dream, or are you
planning on travelling with someone?” he asked, interested.
Potter
once again shrugged. “I don’t know, everyone seems to already have their plans
set out, I seem to be the only person interested in travelling the world. Maybe
once I get back I’ll look at settling down with someone, that or I might find
someone on my travels”.
He
didn’t feel so good.
“That
sounds a bit better, now I have a chance of winning in the betting rinks” he
stated with a smirk.
Silence
fell over them again and Draco quickly picked up a book to read so that he
wouldn’t just be sitting there looking uncomfortable. A few minutes passed
before Potter spoke again, almost making the blonde jump.
Potter
seemed to have been studying him for a while. “What about you?” He finally
asked as he sat back in the chair. “Aren’t you interested in settling down with
someone?” He asked curiously.
Raising
a brow Draco shrugged and broke eye contact with Potter, instead he focused on
the book in his hands and rubbed at a small crease on the paper. “I’d have to
find someone who can handle my moods, not many people can handle me for long
exposures” he admitted, smirking and looking back to Potter. “I don’t mind
either way though. If I settle with someone then I wish them the best of luck
with putting up with me, if I don’t then all the more time for me to spend on
achieving my goals” he admitted.
Potter
nodded, somewhat understanding before he grinned. “I never thought I’d see the
day where you’d actually admit to having a mood complex” he chuckled.
A
few more minutes passed in silence once Draco gave the brunette a small glare
for his comment he had been unable to rub the small smile from his face while
the glare was in place but suited himself with being able to shut the boy up.
They
seemed to return to studying, their books open and although Draco was trying to
read the sentences in front of him, it was going in one ear and out the other.
“Good
page?” Harry suddenly commented, making the blonde look up with a curiously
raised brow.
“Hm?”
The
brunette chuckled. “You’ve been reading that page for a while now with a frown.
Is it a good page?” He asked, he seemed to know Draco
hadn’t been reading but wasn’t commenting on it.
Holding
back his blush, Draco glared at him once again. “I’m sure if you were to read
this page you’d be on it for a while too, it’s confusing” he stated, it was the
best lie he could come up with at such little time.
The
brunette put his book down and reached across the table, making the blonde
frown and lean back, eyeing his hand warily. “Give it here and I’ll see if I
can understand it”.
He
wasn’t meant to ask that question… It ruined Draco’s lie.
Another
quick lie was in order, and when he caught sign of the brunette’s wrist watch
he closed the book. “As nice as this conversation has been, the bell is about
to go” He stated, glad for his spotting of the watch.
With
the time announcement both teens began to pack up.
That
had been a close call.
“Thank
you for meeting me here” Potter suddenly stated as he zipped up his backpack
and threw it over his shoulder. “I appreciate it”.
Draco
nodded as he fastened his bag closed and picked it up. “Amazingly enough I had
fun and I didn’t end up hexing you into oblivion like I had expected” he stated
as he began to walk through the library, Potter at his side.
“I
was expecting it to be awkward, and it seemed to be going that way at the
beginning” the Gryffindor admitted as he they made their way out of the
library.
Draco
keenly ignored Madam Pince’s tapping of her wrist watch.
“What
do you have now?”
Draco
shifted his backpack. “Advanced Potions. You?”
“Transfiguration. I’ll see you tomorrow? Do you want to meet
up again for lunch?”
“Hmm…
I guess”.
“Great,
see you then”.
Draco
watched as Potter turned and left down another corridor. Although the entire
thing had gone better then expected, Draco had a
feeling that there was something that he was missing, something big and it had
to do with Potter’s sudden interest in him.
With
a frown the blonde began to make his way towards the dungeons.
oOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
Draco
smiled and sat back He had finally found the word ‘Communication’, in the
middle of the find a word, going through the word ‘Fond’.

Kati.e – ‘Will all
the chapters be PG-13 or was that the rating for that chapter alone?’ --- RE:
I forgot all about the last few chapters. The rating will go up. I have to
re-write the last chapter because it was lost when my computer crashed a week
ago. I’m thinking of writing a lemon scene into it.
Sasu – ‘make it so that Draco is on the top :D I
can't stand when Harry is not the bottom’ --- RE: I’m really sorry to tell
you this, but I’m the opposite to you. I can’t handle
it when Harry’s on the bottom. All my stories are a dominant Harry. This story
is going to have a top Harry too. I’m really sorry.
Suiri – ‘I'm still confused about the 'find a word bit.'’ --- RE: The find
a word plays no significant part in this story, it’s just a challenge I’ve made
myself to write the starting and ending of every chapter with the find a word.
In the start he is looking for the word and in the end he finds it, within the
body of the story he deals with the word he is trying to find… It’s a weird symbolic
thing. It’s like stages in his and Harry’s relationship, and when he’s overcome
them or done it he finds the word – like he’s passed the stage… Does that make
any sense?
