Disclaimer: *Sniffle* Harry Potter and his wonderful
world do not belong to me. (Blows

crazy little brain, but if you recognize it, chances are that it belongs to

A/N: I decided to portray Durmstrang
as an all boys’ school like it was in the movie. I know its not
really canon, but I thought it would work a bit better with the story.

Chapter One: A Day of Dangerous Doors
December 20th, 2003
It was early in the morning and
sun had yet to come up. Eris was pacing
in the tower, trying to figure out if there was any possible way to hide for
the rest of the day. The Cannons were
coming to the school and she knew that her time could very well be up. Ron wasn’t a stupid man. Even if she hid, someone on the staff was
bound to mention that there was an “Erista” teaching
at the school. It would be enough to
prick his interest. If it wasn’t…well
someone would mention Serena and Regulus and there was no way that he’d let
that one slip by. She’d already arranged
for Greg and Naiya to take the children away until
the next day, but she couldn’t leave!
Headmaster Tervel needed her there to help
keep the students in order.
She’d worked so hard to keep her
presence here a secret. She’d always
meant to go home, but she’d grown comfortable a Durmstrang,
perhaps even complacent. She, Naiya, and Greg all used the Metamorph
potion, but there was only so much that a disguise could cover up. The potion was able to hide Eris’ own elven heritage only to a small extent and Naiya’s not at all.
They looked quite a bit different, but Eris’ eyes refused to turn color
and she had to face the facts, two elves traveling together were a pretty big
tip off.
“Lass, you should still be in bed,” Lorcan said from behind her. The old Irish hound was
always sniffing her out at the worst times.
“Can’t sleep, Lor,”
Eris said softly. “I don’t know how I’m
going to get through the day.”
“You’ve been taken that potion again, to help
you stay awake,” Lorcan said accusingly. “That’s not good for you health, Eris. You can’t be taking it or I’ll report it to
Headmaster Tervel.”
“It doesn’t hurt me, Lorcan. It’s the people who can’t leave me alone that
do that,” Eris snapped.
“Vlad is a good man
and a good headmaster,” Lorcan said gently. “He’s got us all looking out for you and
everyone knows that you don’t want attention brought to yourself. No one will mention the little ones even
though they don’t know why they’re keeping quiet.”
“Its Krum I’m worried about,” Eris said. “He knows Hermione and Ron. It’s a slim chance that he won’t be aware of
the fact that they’re looking for me. If
he brings Ron’s attention to me there won’t be any getting out of it.”
“So stick close Robbie,” Lorcan
chided gently. “He’ll watch out for
you. He’s taken quite a shine to you
this past week and it would do you some good to make another friend. Merlin knows that you avoid Anna, Ekaterina, Ivan and the rest of the staff far too
efficiently.”
“Robbie seems to be a nice man, but there’s
something about him that worries me,” Eris said softly. “I don’t like being alone with him. He’s always staring, like he’s looking for
something in me.”
“Lass,” Lorcan said
with a smile. “You’re reading too much
into it. Now, I know that this isn’t
your true face, but it’s quite a lovely one.
Its nothing compared to the raven-haired beauty you are with out that
fancy potion of yours, but the flame-haired lass before me is a pretty
picture. Robbie is probably just a mite
interested in you. Can’t blame the man
now, can you? The staff and students
alike tend to assume that your mate passed away before you came to teach
here. There’s something to be said for a
man who will take interest in a woman who already has children.”
Eris chuckled. “Alright, Lorcan,
I’m sure he’s fine, but you shouldn’t let him get any ideas if he talks to you
about it. You know that I’m not
available however the situation might seem.”
“You ought to get that across to Viktor,” Lorcan said lightly.
“He’s under the impression that he’ll win you over soon enough. He and Robbie had words about it just the
other night.”
Eris frowned. “Why?”
Lorcan
shrugged. “Who knows? Robbie’s no young buck and he probably sees
Viktor as a young man who doesn’t understand what he’d be undertaking in courting
a young woman with two wee ones to care for.”
“The entire male gender is crazed if you ask
me,” Eris spat out. “Doesn’t anyone care
about how I feel about the situation?”
“Of course, Eris,” Lorcan
said soothingly, “but you need to consider that it might be time for the truth
to come out.”
Eris closed her eyes. “I know…but this just feels like home
now. I know that everyone thinks I’m
distant, but I love my students and I adore all the staff members. I even love Vlad
and Lazar when they’re constantly on my case about getting enough sleep and
eating right.”
“They’re a fine pair as headmaster and
deputy,” Lorcan said with a smile. He placed a hand on Eris’ arm then. “Just try to relax and have a good time today. The twins are off and safe, there’s no chance
that this Ron will recognize you on sight, and every single young man in our
school is falling in love with you!”
“That’s not funny, Lor,”
Eris cried. “Be nice or I’ll tell Ekaterina that you’ve been teasing me.”
“Hey now, lass,” Lorcan
said, grabbing at his heart, “it’s not fair to bring a man’s wife into the
argument.”
Eris rolled her eyes. “Sometimes I regret the day that I convinced
you to go after her.”
Lorcan smiled. “Ah, but I never will.”
“I know,” Eris said softly. “Now go hunt for students. I need to get a few hours of sleep before the
exhibition. Lord knows that Vlad will pitch a fit if I have circles under my eyes.”
Lorcan’s
soft laughter filled her ears as he walked away. The man just never gave up.

Ron hurried through the crowd of
students with James clutched to his chest.
He spotted Krum waving him over and rushed to his side. “I’m glad I finally found you, mate! I need to hurry and get changed for the
match.”
“Vell, you don’t haff to vorry now,” Viktor said
with a smile. “James
and I vill haff a good time
vatching the game. You go ahead and get ready.”
Ron nodded. “Hey, little buddy, you remember Mr. Krum,
right?”
James smiled brightly, his green
eyes glowing in the sunlight. “I ‘member, Uncle Ron!
Aunty ‘Mione took me to see him play Kiddich this summer.”
The little boy was beaming and Ron simply shook his head at his godson’s
pronunciation of Quidditch. James turned on Viktor then. “You signed my hat and gave Aunty ‘Mione a kiss on the cheek!”
“I remember you too, James. Vould you like to
go find a place to sit?”
Viktor was smiling, but Ron was
frowning now. He simply kept repeating
to himself that it would only have been a friendly little kiss. He decided to test out a theory as Viktor
took James into his arms. “So, Krum,
Hermione says that you’ve got your eye on a girl. Is she one of the staff?”
Viktor nodded enthusiastically. “She’s a lovely vitch,
but a bit shy I think. Her-my-ninny says
I should be patient, but I haff plans to ask her to
dance tonight.”
“Sounds like a good plan, mate,” Ron said with
a satisfied smile. “I can’t wait to meet
her, but I have to go. Behave for Mr.
Krum, James!”
“I will,” he heard James call after him. Ron said a silent prayer that the little boy
would stay under control.
________________________________________________________________________
Eris was quite happy that she made
it through the match without incident.
She sat with a group of her seventh year students and effectively
avoided Robbie LeBlanc despite his initial attempt to
gain her attention at the beginning of the match. At the moment she was busily rounding up the
last of the stray boys to make sure they were ready to head home.
She was just about to open the door at the
base of the last dormitory tower when it flew open and struck her head on. She fell backward onto the floor and clutched
at her forehead.
“Who in the name of Merlin is still running
about,” she growled. “You’re all old
enough to know better!”
“I sorry,” said a tiny, frightened voice.
Eris’ eyes shot open to the sight of what
could only be described as a miniature Draco hovering over her. The boy was a mirror image of her old friend
at the same age, but with a few minor changes.
His eyes were a vibrant green, just like Harry’s, and his ears had a
slight point to them. She also noticed
that he looked about ready to cry.
“Shush, little one, it’s alright,” Eris said softy,
climbing to her knees. “Come here. What’s your name?”
The boy approached her cautiously,
but said proudly, “I’m James Abraxas Malfoy-Potter.”
Eris swallowed hard. She had, of course, heard through the
grapevine that Draco and Harry had had a child.
She’d longed to meet him and hadn’t even considered that he might be at
the match. “That’s quite a name.”
“You should say your name,” James said a bit
more timidly. “Daddy
you always inter-duce yourself.”
Eris smiled. “I’m Professor Erista.”
“Arista,” James said
with a smile.
“Close enough,” Eris said brightly. “Now why were you in such a hurry?”.
“I lost Mr. Krum,” the boy said sadly. “Everyone was pushing and I lost his hand.”
“Did someone scare you,” Eris asked in
concern.
“Everyone is so big,” James said with tears in
his eyes again. “I couldn’t see Uncle
Ron or Mr. Krum or Miss Maggie. I wanted
to hide.”
“Well its alright
now, because I can take you back to Mr. Krum,” Eris said softly. “Do you want me to carry you?”
“Please,” James said with a woeful look. “I’m scared of all the big people and
you…’member me of nana.”
Eris frowned for a moment, trying
to puzzle out her nephew’s words. “Oh, I
remind you of your grandmother?”
“Her too,” James said eagerly. “But you ‘member me of nana.”
“I remind you, James,” Eris said firmly.
The little boy smiled
cheekily. “Fine, you remind me of my
nana.”
Eris just shook her head. She’d gone through all the lapses into baby
talk with Serena and Regulus. They’d
been able to speak perfectly well by age three, but often used baby talk to
help sway people to their way. Luckily,
now that they’d had their fifth birthday earlier in the month they both felt
that they were too old to do that anymore.
“And who is your nana, James,” Eris asked with
interest.
“Nana Weasley,” James said happily. “She’s not my grandma, she’s my nana. Auntie Ginny held me when I was a baby so
Nana Weasley is my nana.”
Eris smiled. “That makes perfect sense.”
“I think so to,” James said with a nod. “But you remind
me of Grandma Lily too. They both have
red hair. You remind me of Granda ‘Cissa too. You talk like her.”
“Well…”
Eris was cut off by the sight of
Viktor and one Ron Weasley running towards her.
She’d barely made it out onto the grounds with the boy.
Ron immediately snatched James
away and hugged him tightly. “Oh, Jamie,
where on earth did you go? Merlin! ‘Mione’s going to
kill me!”
“I voudn’t vorry about Her-my-oh-ninny,” Viktor said gravely. “Vorry
about Draco.”
Ron paled and Eris quickly stepped
in. “Now, now, gentlemen, James is just
fine and I doubt he was in any danger here at the school.”
“Perhaps,” Viktor said, “but you don’t know
Draco, Erista.
He vill tear us apart for losing track of his
baby.”
Eris coughed to hide her slight
laugh. She always knew that Draco would
end up being a protective father. “Then
I suggest that you don’t tell them.”
“I’m sorry, professor,” Ron said quickly, “but
that won’t work. James will tell them
straight off.”
Eris rolled her eyes and turned to
James. “James, you know what a secret is
right?”
The little boy nodded. “I know secrets. Daddy tells me secrets and I don’t tell
anyone ‘cept papa and Aunty ‘Mione.”
Eris smiled. “Well, if I ask you to keep a secret could
you promise to only talk about it to your friend here?”
James smiled shyly. “I’ll keep a secret for you. You’re pretty.”
Eris laughed lightly. “Okay, can you promise not to tell anyone
that you got lost?”
James seemed to consider this for a moment and
then asked to be set down. When he was
on his own two feet he gave Eris a very serious look. “I’ll keep it a secret if you’ll dance with
me at the party.”
Eris wasn’t really surprised to
hear her nephew bargaining in this way, but she did have to struggle not to
laugh. At first she was a bit worried. She’d wanted to avoid that damned party, but
now little James would quite possibly provide a diversion. “I’ll tell you what, Mr. Malfoy-Potter. You promise that you’ll keep this a secret
and I’ll dance every dance with you.”
James looked quite pleased by this
for a moment and then looked thoughtful.
“Will you dance one dance with Mr. Krum?”
Eris was a bit surprised at
this. The boy really was a little
Slytherin. “Yes, in spite of the fact
that I know feel like I’ve been set up.”
James pulled an extremely innocent
face. “What’s that mean?”
“It means that…” Eris stopped train of thought and then
redirected it. “It means that you’ve
just tricked a mother who ought to know better.”
She’d been about to say that the
boy had out Slytherined a Slytherin. Draco would be proud. She straightened up then. “Well, gentlemen, I have students to chase
out of the school. I’ll see you all at
the party.”
She hurried off then and kept
praying that this technique of hiding in plain sight would work.
________________________________________________________________________
Ron stared after the redhead as
she hurried away. “I didn’t even catch
her name.”
“That was ‘fessor Arista,” James said happily. “She’s nice and pretty, right Mr. Krum?”
Ron looked to Viktor who was
smiling quite happily. “Will you
translate please?”
“That vas Professor Erista Vasaio, the most
magnificent voman in the school.”
Ron frowned. “And would that be because she’s one of only
three witches living here?”
Viktor laughed. “You can poke fun, Ron, but I’m going to make
Erista my vife if I can vin her over.”
Ron chuckled. “Well, at least you can say her name. She has kids?”
“Two little angels,” Viktor said, looking a
bit uncomfortable. “But enough of that,
let’s go and get you both something to eat.”
Ron shrugged and picked James back
up. He couldn’t help but think that
there was something odd about that witch, but James liked her and the little
guy always had an uncanny ability to read people. Besides, it would be fun to watch old Vicky
try and “vin her over”.
_______________________________________________________________________
Eris smoothed down her robes as
she walked into the ballroom. Lorcan spotted her quickly and waved her over, but he was
chatting with Ivan and Lazar and she wasn’t up for conversation. She headed over to the punch bowl and was
about to pour herself a glass when someone tapped her arm. She turned and saw Robbie LeBlanc
smiling down at her.
“Professor Vasaio,
you look lovely,” he said kindly.
Eris smiled uncertainly. “That’s very kind of you to say, Mr. LeBlanc. You’re
looking rather sharp yourself this evening.”
“Thank you,” he said. “Would you care to dance? I’ve been hoping to have a chance to visit
with you all week. I’d like to get to
know everyone as well as possible before the beginning of the next term.”
“Well I…” Eris stumbled for a moment and then
caught sight of a little blond boy in emerald dress robes shooting towards
her. “I would love to, Mr. LeBlanc, but I’m afraid I lost all my dances to that young
man in a bet of sorts.”.
Robbie turned, frowning, to look
at James. Something flickered in his
eyes and then he offered a tentative smile.
“Well, my loss is most certainly his gain. I hope you’ll reconsider if he gets tired later
in the evening.”
Eris smiled. “I promise to try and save you one dance,
though young James already told me I’m to dance with Viktor at least once.”
James was tugging on her robes
then. “Erista! Erista! You have to come dance now.”
Eris saw Robbie smile slightly as
she bent over to pick up James. She
really would try to give him a dance. Lorcan was right, the man did seem
to be the good sort. “Yes, yes, little
one. I see your uncle taught you to say
my name properly.”
James’ chest puffed out a
bit. “He said that a
good gentlemen would say it right.”
Eris smiled slyly. “Ah yes, and I suppose he said that while Mr.
Krum was in the room.”
“Can we dance now,” James asked eagerly.
Eris hesitated for a moment and
glanced at Robbie. She suddenly felt
quite bad about leaving him, but he smiled and motioned her off. “Go on and enjoy yourself, fair maiden. Your little prince charming is impatient.”
“I’ll save you a dance later,” Eris whispered.
“I heard that,” James said as she carried him
out onto the dance floor. “You don’t
have to carry me.”
James looked a bit uncertain and
Eris smiled. “I’ll tell you what, you
can stand on my feet and I’ll dance.
When you get tired I’ll hold you.”
James bit his lip. “But that doesn’t seem right…”
“Don’t worry,” Eris said quickly. “That’s how I dance with my son all the
time.”
They danced through several dances
together with James only letting lose a steady string of giggles, but halfway
through the party James got talkative again.
He asked, “What’s your son’s
name?”
Eris thought quickly about what to
say. “We all call him Reggie. He’s just a little bit older than you.”
James looked a little sad then. “I wish he was at my school. I only have Jackie to play with who’s my age
and she only wants to pay with dolls and her little brother Marcus is scared
all the time and he won’t play with any of us because he just likes to hide
under the tables and Madam Hendrix tells us to leave him alone because he’s
allowed to be by himself it he wants to.”
Eris took all this in with a
smile. “Just think though, when you
start school you’ll have all sorts of friends!”
“Yeah, but daddy says that I have two cousins
as old as me and I wish they’d come home, but daddy says that they’re on reeeeeeeeeeally long trip and that no one knows when their
coming back,” James said and then gave a dramatic sigh. “And my special aunty is with them.”
Eris frowned. “Special aunty?”
James nodded eagerly. “My special aunty is my real aunty. She’s daddy’s
sister. I have lots of aunties and
uncles, but she’s my only special one, but I’ve never seen her. Papa says she’s beautiful and so does uncle Siri, but daddy doesn’t
say stuff about her to me ‘cept to say that she’ll be
home before I know it.”
Eris felt her heart clench and
closed her eyes. She quickly James up
into her arms and whispered in his ear, “Can I tell you a really special secret,
James?”
James nodded and laid his sleepy
head on her shoulder. “Please tell me.”
Eris swallowed hard. “I know for a fact that your aunty is going
to come and see you very soon.”
“Do you know my Aunty Eris,” James asked
sleepily.
“Very well,” Eris said quietly. “And she told me that she’s getting tired of
traveling. She misses everyone at Hogwarts and she really wants to meet you. She can’t wait to hug you and kiss you on the
nose. She can’t wait for you to meet
your cousins either.”
“I love my special aunty,” James murmured
softly. “I dream about her every night.”
Eris stopped dancing and looked at
the boy who was nearly asleep in her arms.
“You dream about her?”
James nodded sluggishly. “She sings to me and rocks me with my
cousins. Then she puts us in bed and
kisses us on the nose just like you said.”
Eris didn’t know what to
think. That was the exact routine that
she went through with Serena and Regulus every night. True, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary
for parents to do with their children, but still… “James, what song does she sing to you?”
“The little boy nuzzled her neck and said, “She
sings about a river.”
“Does she say ‘peace is flowing like a
river’,” Eris asked.
James nodded.
“I’m sleepy.”
Eris closed her eyes. “Go ahead and sleep, James,” she
whispered. “You’re aunty’s got you.”
________________________________________________________________________
It didn’t take Ron long to notice
that James had fallen asleep on Professor Vasaio’s
shoulder. He thought it was sweet that
she was still rocking gentle to the music.
Still, Viktor had said that she just got the night off from her own kids
and he didn’t really think it was fair to stick her with the care of a
stranger’s. So he walked over and tapped
her on the shoulder.
She turned a sleepy smile on
him. “He’s such a little angel, Mr.
Weasley. His fathers must be proud.”
Ron frowned.
“They are, but how did you know…”
“James hardly stopped talking about his daddy
and his papa. It didn’t take me long to
figure out that they weren’t both the same person,” the witch said gently.
Ron gently took James into his
arms. “Thank you for being so patient
with him. He’s pretty good at getting
his way.”
Professor Vasaio
chuckled. “Most children are in my
experience. Besides, its
not hard for such a young one to twist a mother’s arm.”
Ron smiled. “Yes, well I see that Viktor is on his way to
claim his dance and I should get this little bloke to bed. You have a wonderful evening, Professor Vasaio.”
“You too, Mr. Weasley,” the woman said with a
bright smile.
Ron walked away with a wave to
Viktor. He couldn’t get it out of his
head that Professor Vasaio’s smile was very familiar.
_______________________________________________________________________
Eris allowed Viktor to sweep her
off in a waltz. He looked so happy to
finally have her to himself that she felt bad that she’d have to let him down.
“Thank you for the dance, Erista,”
Viktor said with a broad smile. “Perhaps
you vill consider granting me another later on.”
“Of course,” Eris said lightly. “But I have to warn you that I promised
Robbie at least one dance if James went to sleep.”
Viktor looked a bit
displeased. He quickly said, “Vould you like to join me for a small drink ven the party is done?”
Eris’ eyes went wide. “Viktor, I think we need to have a small talk
about something…”
“I am very fond of Serena and Regulus,” he cut
in quickly. “I don’t mind them at all.”
Eris smiled kindly. “I know that Viktor, but there’s something
you need to understand…”
Viktor held up a hand. “You haff
feelings for your friend Craig?”
Eris couldn’t help but giggle at
the idea of her being in love with Greg and she was sure that the poor man
would feel the same way. “No, Viktor,
Craig and I are just good friends.”
Viktor frowned. “I don’t understand. You are single then?”
“That’s what I’m trying to tell you, Viktor,”
Eris said gently. “I’m not single…but
I’m not attached in any obvious way. I’m
afraid I’ve grown used to people assuming that I’m a free woman and I usually
don’t both to dispel them of the notion.”
“Many of the professors say you mate died,”
Viktor said softly. “If he’s alive
then…”
“Why have I been here for five years without
him?” Eris sighed. “My mate and I are…well I guess you would say
we are separated. A wise friend once
told me that this is my retreat to rediscover my independence.”
Viktor hung his head. “And ven you find
it you vill go away from here.”
“I’m sorry, Viktor,” Eris said softly. “I hope that I didn’t lead you on in any
way.”
“No, Erista, I let
myself attach to you,” Viktor said with a wry smile. “I am in a different place than you. I haff
all the independence I vant. Now I vant
someone to share it all vith.”
“And she’ll be one lucky witch,” Eris said
with a brighter smile. Then she
chuckled. “But, you might not find her
in this school. We’ll definitely have to
get you out for a few social calls.”
Viktor threw back his head and laughed. “Vell
be-tveen you and Her-my-oh-ninny I vill haff a vife
in no time.”
Eris shook her head. “You seem quite eager to get married. Don’t you think you should take it slow?”
Viktor shrugged. “If I find the right vitch
I vill ‘take it slow’ if she wishes, but I’m ready to
settle down. Seeing James makes me vant little vons of my own.”
Eris nodded. “Now that I can understand. While you’re looking, you can come and visit
my twins as often as you like.”
“Thank you, Erista,”
Viktor said with a smile.
The rest
of the party went by quickly, and before Eris knew it she was on her way to her
favorite tower. She climbed up the steps
and reached to open the door, only for it to fly open and sending her reeling
backwards. Her heart stopped as she felt
herself falling in what seemed like slow motion. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, a hand
grabbed her out of the air and she was pulled into strong arms. She simply clung to her savior for a few
moments and hardly even registered that he was rubbing soothing circles on her
back and speaking to her softly.
“Its alright. I caught you and you’re fine now,” he
said. “Nothing to
worry about.”
Eris sighed and then pulled gently
away to see Robbie looking at her with concern.
She closed her eyes and shook her head.
It would have to be the poor guy she accidentally blew off at the party. She’d been so busy consoling Viktor that
she’d forgotten all about dancing with Robbie.
“I’m so sorry, Professor Vasaio,”
Robbie said quickly. “I was looking for
you and when you weren’t on the tower balcony I figured you’d gone to bed. I never thought you’d just be on your way
up.”
Eris shook her head. “No, please don’t be sorry, it was just an
accident.”
“Are you going to be alright,” Robbie asked
gently.
Eris nodded. “I think I’ll go to my room
instead though.”
Robbie gazed at her thoughtfully
for a moment. “You should let me walk
you.”
“I think I would appreciate that,” Eris said
with a small smile. “I don’t feel very
steady at the moment.”
So they walked through the halls
together in silence, Robbie keeping a reassuring hand on her arm the whole way. When they got to the door of her rooms,
Robbie took her hand gently in his.
“Professor Vasaio…Erista,
this may seem odd but I really do need to speak with you in private. This no longer seems to be the appropriate
time, but could you possibly meet with me for lunch tomorrow?”
Eris frowned. This all seemed rather odd. Still, it seemed like something she probably
needed to know. “I can meet with you at noon if you like. We’re do you want me to go?”
Robbie hesitated for a
moment. “I think in my chambers would be
best…if you would feel comfortable. I
know that this seems strange from a man you’ve only known a week, but it is very important that we talk.”
“That’s fine, Robbie,” Eris said gently. “I will see you tomorrow then.”
Robbie sighed and offered her a
calm smile. “Sleep well, Eris,” he said
and slipped away.
Eris stood motionless outside her
door for several minutes. No one on the
staff called her Eris but Lorcan and that was only
because he knew her secret.
She prayed that it was only a slip
of the tongue on Robbie’s part, but the little warning bells in her head were
going off. Lorcan
had definitely been right. Her time here
was quickly coming to an end.
