During his adult years, Severus reflected on his early years at Hogwarts and was overcome by the impression that the child he was prior to Hogwarts was polarly different from the child he was after the Sorting Ceremony. The world had indeed looked different before he started school. Perhaps the world had always looked the same and Hogwarts had only opened his eyes.
Around the time his eyes opened, Severus began to feel hollow. Lucius was his sole and constant companion. That friendship was the one thing that didn't feel empy. Even Lucius occasionally troubled him though. The trouble wasn't so much Lucius himself, but his immense pride in Slytherin. With that pride came an unbending opinion of how a Slytherin should behave, which he imposed upon his friend at every turn.
When Severus questioned Lucius' stance on Muggle -borns, Lucius exclaimed, "You're a Slytherin and you would compare true, pureblood wizards like ourselves to common mudbloods? Are you mad?"
Turning his eyes downward in shame of asking such an apparently foolish question. Had Severus not been so concerned about inciting Lucius' disgusted glare, he would have explained that he didn't understand why the Slytherins all despised Muggle-borns and that he himself despised them only as much as he despised any other of his fellow students. Of course, Severus did not say any of this as he couldn't bear to be the cause of Lucius' pretty, pointed face contorting in repulsion. It was no bother to Severus how many other people looked at him that way but it was torment to see that look glinting in Lucius' silvery eyes.
Equally tormenting were the dospondent tears that flooded those silvery eyes as the two boys sat in the Slytherin common room at the start of their fifth year. Severus' voice softly wafted through the silence of the room as he said, "That I think I understand."
"I'm glad someone does," Lucius quivered between his tears, "because I don't."
Still Severus could not shake the feeling of uselessness he had felt when Lucius had proclaimed that the Old Man in fact did not mean well. While Severus groped around in his mind, searching for the correct words, his ever-present self-loathing gnawed at his heart. He hated himself for not knowing how to console his dearest friend.
Without really knowing what he was doing, Severus grabbed a hold of Lucius' hand. Lucius stared at him with the same look of shock he had worn when Severus had dared to suggest that Muggle-borns were no more detestable than anyone else. However, where there had been disgust there was now adoration. Gazing at Severus with half-lidded eyes, Lucius extended his free hand and slowly flickered his finger through Severus' hair. Severus' lips slipped apart in surprise and before he knew it Lucius had slipped his tongue between them.
So succulent was the feeling of Lucius' tongue massaging his own that Severus' limbs became butter. He melted against Lucius in unabashed bliss. Lost in the juiciness of the kiss though he was, Severus could definitely feel Lucius gently kneading at his shoulders. Too dazed to think of anything but Lucius' divinely titilating tongue, Severus did not embrace back or even do anything besides graciously accept this kiss. Later, he deeply regretted his inaction, worrying that Lucius may have misinterpreted his ecstatic paralysis as disinterest.
"Jesus bloody Christ!" cried a shrill voice from across the common room. "I always thought you two were kinda weird but I never would have thought you were a couple of faggots!"
Lucius jerked his mouth away from Severus' as quickly as he could. He surveyed the room and discovered that the cry had originated from Narcissa. Exceedingly amused by the boys' snogging, she giggled and shook her mop of platinum hair. In their second year, Lucius had revealed to Severus that he and Narcissa were third cousins. This hadn't been a huge surprise to Severus, who had noticed their curious resemblance during the Sorting Ceremony. Not only did the two cousins share the same colouring but they also had similar facial features. One might have even mistaken them for siblings.
Severus pulled his shoulders miles away from Lucius and slouched into the corner. Lucius, though, could not allow his confidence to be slaughtered by his bratty, bottom-feeding cousin. He sat with his head held high and a look of indignant disdain directed at Narcissa. Despite Lucius' unrelenting air of superiority, Narcissa's smirk did not fade. She hissed at at Lucius, "Just wait until our family finds out about this!"
Remaining calm and dignified, Lucius replied, "Frankly, I don't think anyone of any worth holds much stock in the opinion of a drunken whore like yourself."
Narcissa's face was pinched with rage. Lucius' statement was the sort of thing that many people said about Narcissa everyday at Hogwarts. The difference was that no one had ever ventured to say it to her face. Everything Lucius said to her was unquestionably truthful. That was why it made Narcissa so furious to hear it.
"How can you speak that way of your own flesh and blood?" Narcissa demanded.
"Don't talk so loudly, Narcissa, " chided Lucius. "Enough people already know that a fraction of our blood is shared. I don't want the whole world to know I'm related to someone whose behaviour is more disgraceful than that of a mudblood."
"You are calling my behaviour disgraceful?" Narcissa shrilled. "Have you forgotten what you were just doing? You're the one swapping saliva with another guy!"
"Is there anyone in this building with whom you haven't swapped saliva?" sneered Lucius. "Although, in many cases, I think the swapping involved some bodily fluids other than saliva. Isn't that right, my dear cousin?"
Unable to form an effective comeback, Narcissa bit her lip furiously. After a pitiful silence, Narcissa stammered, "You two can just go bugger each other. I'm going to bed."
"And it must be her bed she's going to, of course," Severus remarked sarcastically after Narcissa was out of earshot.
"I doubt she's ever even been to her own bed," laughed Lucius.
"We should probably go to our beds, though," Severus said seriously. "It's getting late and we have classes tomorrow morning."
Wrapping his arms around Severus' neck, Lucius licked his lips, "Mmm . . . it would be better to continue this in bed."
That wasn't really what Severus meant but the seductively hungry look in Lucius' eyes destroyed any chance there was of Severus admitting it. Lucius took him by the hand and helped him to his feet. Upon arriving in their dorm, they found their other roommates blessedly asleep. Unfortunately, Lucius, in his eagerness, slammed the door with great force. The bang awakened another Slytherin named Goyle, who sat up with a start.
"What's all this then?" Goyle grunted as he rubbed at his eyes.
Assuming a facade of good humour, Lucius chuckled, "Oh, no, Goyle, I didn't wake you, did I?"
