One Morning
Hermione woke up with the summer
sun shining on her back. The warm heat
is what woke her from her perfectly undisturbed sleep. She groans a bit as she rolls over to see
the time.
‘8:30’
She is not usually a morning
person and dreads the sound of her alarm clock so she was surprised to see how
awake she was this morning. She doesn’t
think much of it and simply enjoys the refreshing feeling.
Hermione yawns deeply and climbs
off her bed. She pulls her nightgown
over her head and dresses for her day.
From her wardrobe she chooses a pale pink sundress along with white sandals. She throws her hair into a quick ponytail
and heads out to have a nice breakfast with her parents.
She leaves her bedroom and walks
down the hall towards the kitchen where, no doubt, her parents would be waiting
for her.
‘Strange, mom didn’t make coffee
this morning. She always drinks coffee
first thing in the morning’ Hermione thinks to herself.
She enters the kitchen and it
was undisturbed. No coffee, no
pancakes, no parents.
‘What’s going on?’ Hermione
thinks to herself.
Rationalizing it she heads to
her parents room assuming that they slept in this morning. Even morning birds like her parents are
allowed to sleep in every once in a while.
She got to her parents room and
timidly knocked on the door. When there
was no answer she knocked a bit louder.
“Mom, Dad, are you awake yet?” she called through the door.
Still no answer. She got worried.
She slowly opened the door and
breathed a sigh of relief when she saw her parents sleeping soundly in their
bed.]
“Come on guys, get out of bed.”
Hermione said. But they didn’t
stir. Hermione walked closer to the bed
and pulled the covers down slightly.
Both of her parents’ eyes were
wide open, lifeless and vacant.
Hermione
didn’t even hear herself scream or see the floor speed toward her body. All she could see is the eyes of her parents’
lifeless bodies.
“God, another one!” Tony asked
Rachel as he sleepily entered the crime scene that was Hermione’s home with two
cups of coffee, one in each hand. He
hands one to Rachel as he approaches.
“Afraid so. Everything is exactly like the Malfoy murder
too. No sign of forced entry, no
defensive wounds, and they were both killed with the killing curse.” Rachel informed her partner while she sipped
her too hot coffee. “Only this murder
truly screws the case up.”
“Why do you say that?”
“The victims are muggles. No magical powers. Their daughter is a muggleborn witch.” Rachel says to him. She laughed inwardly at his expression.
“No way! That means that there simply can’t be any
connections. Murders tend to kill
either purebloods or muggleborns, not both!
It has to be random murders?” Tony asks while Rachel tries her best to
collect any magical residue off the sheets.
“I don’t think so. The Malfoy manner is on the other side of
the country. And it can’t be random
considering that both of the victim’s children are only children, go to
Hogwarts, and are in the same year.
This can’t be random. It has to
do with Hermione and Draco.”
Tony sipped his coffee while he
tried to think. Unfortunately that just
doesn’t work for him before noon.
“How’s the girl doing?” Tony
asks as his eye catches her quivering form outside with Dumbledore.
“How could you imagine! Could you imagine finding your parents the
way she did this morning? The poor
thing hasn’t said a single word since she woke up.”
“She fainted?” Tony asked. “Then
who called it in?”
“The muggle neighbor heard her
scream and called the local police. We
were contacted as soon as the body was seen.”
“Does the girl have any family
to stay with?” Tony asked Rachel, enable to pull his eyes off the traumatized
Hermione.
“She does but it isn’t safe for
her there.”
“Where will she be staying then?”
“At Hogwarts, with Draco Malfoy.”
Hermione walked into Hogwarts
with the escort of two aurors and Dumbledore.
She still hasn’t spoken one single word but at least she was no longer
catatonic. They walk her to her private
dorms. What they haven’t told her yet
is that she will be sharing a common room with Malfoy. In fact they haven’t informed her that
Malfoy was at Hogwarts or about his parents.
Nobody, not even Dumbledore had the heart to break that fact to her.
They walk toward the dorms and
approached the portrait.
“There will not be a password to
enter your dorms. We found that it is
not quite secure enough so instead you place your thumb on this pad and it will
read your fingerprint. Very few people
have access to your rooms besides you,” Dumbledore explained.
They enter the common room and
to Hermione’s horror, Draco Malfoy was sitting in the common room in a chair,
staring off at nothing.
Hermione looked at
Dumbledore. Her eyes were pleading for
an explanation.
“Your parent’s were not the only
victims. Mr. Malfoy’s parents were also
murdered about two weeks ago. We put
you too in the head dorms so you will not be alone. I know you two have had differences over the years, but you two
need each other right now whether you realize it or not.” Dumbledore explained.
Hermione nodded and sat down on
the couch near Malfoy, she doesn’t even glance his way.
“I’ll leave you two alone. Maybe you can find comfort in each other
tonight. If you need help or anything
at all simply call out and someone will be with you soon. The room has been set to detect when someone
is calling for help but it does not read everything you say, so you will both
still have your privacy.” Dumbledore
explained.
With that, the aurors and
Dumbledore walked out leaving Malfoy and Hermione alone.
