Professor Severus Snape and student
Hermione Granger looked dazedly around themselves. Snape was the
first of the two to speak.
“Ms.Granger, when
are we?”he hissed.
“How do you
expect me to know, Sir?”
“I had
presumed, Ms. Granger, that
you might have had a destination in mind when planning to Shanghai
me.” Hermione gasped in indignation. “Or perhaps you
aren't such an impressive Know-it-All after all. Is that it, Ms.
Granger?” Unable to bear the unjust accusations of her irate
professor any longer, Hermione burst out with-
“You were the one
who forced me to drink my Accelero Temporis potion! If we've moved
by any more than an hour, I'll bet that's why!”
“An hour?” Snape raised an eyebrow. “Pray, tell,
what need have you for an extra hour? Cheating by increasing
the alloted time in which to complete your homework assignments, Ms.
Granger? It's no wonder your essays are insufferably long. You must
be completely unaware of the entire concept of brevity.”
“You don't know when we are any more than I do! Why don't you
stop insulting me long enough for us to find out?”
“We aren't doing anything, Ms. Granger. I will
go take a look while you remain here. And then, if you haven't
gotten us completely lost you will be returning to your common room.
Perhaps this time you will actually be on time.”
Snape swept out of the room, leaving behind him a very unhappy
Gryffindor. Hermione decided to take things into her own hands and
headed for the periodicals section. The stack of Witches Weekly was
topped with a new issue- from October of 1944. She gasped. Hearing
Snape re-enter the library, Hermione stepped forward, brandishing the
magazine.
“October of 1944,” she stated.
“Insufferable Know-It-All.” His voice and expression
were unchanged, but his color had grown darker. Professor Severus
Snape was upset. “I suggest you follow me if you don't want to
be taken for Grindelwald's spy. Dumbledore is not headmaster of the
school at this time, and though I doubt we need to consider Armando
Dippet a threat, there are more formidable professors
remaining. Not that I expect you to understand discretion.
Constantly charging in headlong. Foolish Gryffindors.” By now
he was doing no more than muttering and punctuating his steps as he
swept out of the library and headed towards the dungeons. Hermione
trailed grudgingly behind.
Through a blur of dark passageways leading through the heart of
Slytherin territory, emerging suddenly into the quiet of night
outside the castle, Hermione struggled to keep up and stay
unobtrusive. She didn't want to be noticed either by the castle's
present inhabitants or by her professor. A small thought in the back
of her head said she could accuse him of being a spy and perhaps trap
him here while she returned, but she hadn't nearly a large enough
grudge to allow her to do it. Besides, she knew of his work for the
Order and its importance. His continued plaguing might be the fulcrum
upon which her entire world rested.
As Hermione deliberated, the two drew past the Forbidden Forest and
slipped into Hogsmeade. It was nearing dawn. Snape stopped suddenly,
causing Hermione to nearly walk into him, but it was what he said
next that startled her most.
“Do you think your acting is up to pretending to be my wife?”
“What?! Why?”
“Even in Wizarding society during the 1940s, unmarried couples
staying together were still frowned upon. It is in our best interest
to appear unremarkable. Thus, marriage. It could be an arranged
marriage if you like.” His expression had almost an appearance
of humor to it. Hermione blinked.
“You expect us to remain here for an extended period of time
then. What stands in the way of our return?”
“I am still working that out, Ms. Granger.”
“Very well. What do you need me to do?”
“Your intelligent cooperation will hopefully be sufficient.
Are you ready to proceed?”
“Nearly, but- what's our story, what do we call ourselves?
Where are we from?”
“Must you know everything, Ms. Granger?”
Hermione grinned up at him, “Surely you don't intend to
continue calling me that, Sir.”
“You are correct, of course. Would you prefer 'Wife'?”
“Do you think Hermione might suffice?”
“That may do.”
“And what may I call you?”
“You may continue to use “Sir”. It is, after all,
an arranged marriage.”
Hermione looked slightly peevish but let it go. Rather than reply,
she pulled her wand from her sleeve and charmed her robes to a more
nondescript appearance, leaving their Gryffindor colors behind.
It would be excessive to say that Severus Snape felt pleased in
response, but he did feel something akin to hope.
