The
next day, after eating breakfast and seeing her parents off, Hermione returned
to her room to finish getting ready to go to Azkaban.
“What does one wear to visit a convicted criminal who hates all muggleborns,
huh Crookshanks?” Hermione asked her ginger cat Crookshanks. Who
was sunning himself in her window seat now that yesterday’s rainstorms have
passed. With a casual glance at his mistress, Crookshanks stood, arched
his back and stretched and walked out of the room.
“Well if you don’t have any ideas there is no need to get huffy.”
POP!
“Hermione! It’s Kingsley.”
“I’ll be down in a minute.” Dashing around her room, Hermione grabbed a
subdued set of navy blue robes with delicate sage green embroidery around the
hems and cuffs. After a few quick charms to fix her hair, it was almost
hopelessly frizzy without one, and adding some subtle make-up Hermione was
ready. Grabbing her purse and wand she left her room and headed down
stairs. In the front hall she found Crookshanks and Kingsley having a
staring contest.
“I don’t think your cat trusts me. He won’t let me move from this spot.”
Kingsley told Hermione once she reached them.
“That’s ok Kingsley. Don’t take it personally. He doesn’t like Ron
either. If he thought you were a threat he would have attacked you out
right already. So, your still here.” Hermione smiled at the
auror. “Are you ready? I am quite curious as to why Lucius needs to
see me. I have been racking my brain all night and can’t come up with a
single thing.”
“I have to admit Hermione that I am also curious. But the only way for us
to find out is to go. Do you know the location of Azkaban?”
“No.”
“Alright then, you will side-along apparate with me. Hold on
tight.” And with a loud popping sound Kingsley disappeared with Hermione
only to reappear at Azkaban Prison. A very dark, gloomy and cold
place. Hermione gathered that the cold was from all the years that the
Dementors controlled the prison, sucking the happiness and life out of its
occupants. It does have a side effect of making everything cold.
Looking up at the stone building, Hermione wondered, yet again, what Lucius
wanted. Following Kingsley up the steps to the two wide wooden doors
Hermione was shocked to see a pleasant waiting room on the other side.
Seeing her confusion, Kingsley told her that it was for those waiting for
interviews with inmates, guards, and the warden. Left over from when the
Dementors were in charge of security, the powers that be wanted a “happy” place
for those that had to wait. Laughing at this Hermione walked over to a
glass window set in the wall immediately to their left and knocked. A
moment latter it was opened by a gruff looking old man.
“Name and business here.”
“My name is Hermione Granger. One of your inmates requested an audience
with me. Lucius Malfoy. This is Kingsley…”
“I know who he is young lady.
I’m not stupid. I know my own boss. Hello Auror Shacklebolt.
See you are forced to bring these young whores to see the inmates now.
What did you do to get on the Minister’s bad side?”
“I think that you are mistaken Auror Jameson. Hermione is not a whore
here for a “Visit”. It was a legal request made by the warden that she
come. Hermione is a student at Hogwarts that I met through Dumbledore.”
“Sorry about that miss. The only women we see come through here to see
the inmates are those from Knockturn Alley here to do business with them.
If you will just wait one minute I will let the warden know that you are
here.” And with that Jameson closed the window with a snap of his wrist.
Kingsley and Hermione turned back to the waiting room and were just taking
seats on two of the chairs provided when a door materialized on the wall next
to the window. Out of it came a very stern and elderly man dressed in
black.
“Aaahhh, Miss Granger, I see that you decided to respond to the request.
Couldn’t tell if you would or not. Was left instructions to come to you
if you didn’t. Kingsley, good to know you wouldn’t let her in here on her
own. Follow me.” And with that the man turned and disappeared
through the doorway.
In a hurry to keep up Hermione and Kingsley followed. Looking at the man
trotting along beside her, Hermione asked, “Is he the warden?”
“Yes. A very abrupt man. Knows what he is doing though. Great
man. Names Thomas Williams.” Thomas Williams was leading them
through a series of corridors that was getting Hermione quite mixed up.
She dearly hoped she wouldn’t have to find her own way out here. She
didn’t think that she would be able to. Finally he stopped in front of a
wooden door. Opening it he stepped to the side. “If you will wait
in here, Prisoner Malfoy will be brought in shortly. Do not worry.
He will be bound magically. There is no way he can attack you physically
or magically.” And with that Warden Williams turned and headed back in
the direction that they came.
“Well, we might as well make ourselves
comfortable.” Hermione said as she stepped into the room and towards the lone
table.
Just as she sat down there was a
clanging noise in the hallway. It was
very faint at first. One would almost
believe they were imagining it, but steadily it got louder and louder until it
stopped right outside their door.
Suddenly the door swung open, and two Aurors stepped inside. Dividing one went left the other right as
they scanned the whole room. Walls,
floors, ceiling, Kingsley, and Hermione.
Nothing was left untested. Once
they were satisfied that the two visitors were not there to break out their
captive they stepped back to the door and signaled for the prisoner and
remaining two aurors to come into the room.
With as much dignity as he could manage in his situation, Lucius Malfoy
walked into the room. No walked was not
the correct word, glid is more appropriate.
For that is exactly what he did.
Glid. Walking up to the table,
Lucius took a seat on the opposite side of the table from Hermione. Once seated, one of the Aurors took out his
wand and pointed it at the chair. A rope
and chain mix shot out of the wood of the chair and wrapped itself around
Lucius.
“Hello, Miss Granger, Auror
Shacklebolt. I am so pleased that you
could find time so quickly to come see me. What I have to impart is quite important. So very important that I am willing to state
everything on the record, voluntarily under Veritaserum, if need be.”
“Well, Mr. Malfoy, why don’t you tell us
why you called us here. If it is
anything that we feel needs to be authenticated, we will deal with that then.”
Kingsley said.
“What you don’t know is that I was a
second spy in Voldemort’s Inner Circle. I was working for Dumbledore the whole
time. My only contacts were Dumbledore
and Snape. When I was arrested,
Dumbledore played a huge part in gathering the evidence needed to convict me,
and give a nice long stay in Azkaban. It
was all fabricated. Dumbledore made
everything up. The attacks, the memories
that he removed from people were staged.
Everything was a set up. My life
was in danger. Voldemort was close to
figuring out who the traitor was. Only,
he thought that there was just one traitor not two. It was, unlike most think, between me and a
little known Death Eater, not Severus. To
protect Severus and myself, I was placed in Azkaban for Death Eater
Crimes. Voldemort still believes that I
am his follower, punishes the real Death Eater, one more we have to worry
about, and no one suspects Snape. When
Voldemort returned, he swore to me that he would not call my son Draco to his
service until he had graduated Hogwarts.
What Dumbledore, Snape and I didn’t see was that with me locked up
Voldemort would call my son to him. I
never wanted Draco mixed up with Voldemort.
He was to be protected. Voldemort
broke his word and gave Draco a mission.
A suicide mission, but a mission.
He was to find the vanishing chest inside Hogwarts and repair it without
anyone finding out. And secondly he was
to kill Dumbledore. Contrary to what
young Mr. Potter believes, Dumbledore knew of the mission from almost the very
beginning. See, Narcissa, fearful of
Draco’s life, went to see Severus soon after the mission was given. She made Severus swear a wizarding oath that
he would help Draco and that if Draco couldn’t finish the mission, meaning if
he couldn’t kill Dumbledore, then Severus would finish it for him. Do you know the consequences of an oath Miss
Granger?”
“Yes, if an oath isn’t fulfilled then
the person bond dies.” Hermione said in a monotone voice. All this seemed surreal, but believable. They would have to test the truth under
Veritaserum, but what Lucius story was telling would send shockwaves throughout
the wizarding world. She was in shock.
“Very good Miss Granger. So now bond to die if Draco couldn’t kill
Dumbledore and Snape himself didn’t do it Severus went to the Headmaster. He told him everything. After several weeks of arguing and planning,
they came to see me. Severus would
fulfill the vow if need be. Dumbledore
would die by the end of the year. But
Dumbledore didn’t want Severus punished for his roll. He had no choice. The world needed to know that it wasn’t
murder if Severus committed the act; it was following an order, and insuring
his life. Something that Dumbledore
wanted. He felt that Snape had given up
to much for to long. To keep this
information safe and out of enemy hands, and not revealed until the end of the
war, they gave me their memories to keep.
Memories that is stored in vials under the third floor board from the
left of the northeast corner of my cell.
Along with the vials is a written statement from both of them. Mapping out their plan and the reasoning
behind it. Everything that is needed to
clear Severus is there. Now that the war
has ended, he needs to be able to live his life. To come out of hiding.” With this last statement Lucius fell
silent. Nothing could be heard in the
room. Hermione and Kingsley were both to
shocked to speak. There minds were
racing with the implications.
Clearing his throat Kingsley said, “Well,
you have given us quite a lot to think about Mr. Malfoy. You understand that we have to verify
everything that you are saying.” I will
go and retrieve the vials and letters from your cell. They will be looked at and tested at the
Ministry. Tomorrow I will come back here
with Veritaserum to test your story.
After everything is verified then we will move on.”
“That is all that I ask. I am fulfilling my word to them both. You realize that you will never find
Severus. That if everything is correct
that you will have to post the findings in every major Wizarding Newspaper in
the world so that he may know that he has been cleared. He could be anywhere.”
“We will think about that when the time
comes. If the time comes. Now good day Mr. Malfoy.” And with that
Kingsley walks out of the room to collect the items from Lucius room. Turning to look once again at Hermione,
Lucius is once again stunned at how beautiful she has gotten.
“Miss Granger, I would like to take this
time to apologize to you for my behavior.
I was horrible. Acting, but
horrible. The things that I said turned
my blood to ice as I was saying them.
But I had to say them. My roll as
a spy dictated that. I know that you
will never look on my favorably but please know that I regret everything.”
“Mr. Malfoy, if what you have said here
today is true, then you are forgiven.
Because I cannot hold the actions of a spy for the light against
him. That is beyond me. I won’t deny that those things hurt me at the
time, but I will understand why you had to say them, and that you truly feel
sorry for having to say them. That you
don’t believe them. Now I must meet back
up with Kingsley. Good-bye Mr. Malfoy.”
“Good-bye.”
And with that Hermione walked out of the
room. Outside of the door one of the
guards was there to escort her back out to the waiting room. Following the twisting and turning corridors
a second time Hermione knew that no matter how well she had paid attention
getting to the conference room, she would have been lost if she tried to leave
on her own. She wondered if that was not
the plan. A confundus charm of some sort. Worked into the walls. She’d have to remember to ask Kingsley.
On reaching the waiting room she
discovered Kingsley already there and waiting for her.
“What took you so long Hermione?”
“Mr. Malfoy wanted to apologize for his
behavior in the past. Nothing more.”
“Well, that’s…that’s…I can’t finish that
statement until I know if what he has been saying is true.”
With that Hermione laughed. “That is exactly what I said. Now let’s go.”
Walking out of Azkaban to the apparating
location Hermione couldn’t help thinking, WOW.
