Chapter One
Anexia
Anexia could hear the four students ambling down the hall far before they entered the classroom. She looked up from her desk and brushed back a few strands of her auburn hair from over her blue eyes and pushed her glasses further up her nose so she could clearly see the door. All at once the door popped open, and four panting young men stumbled into the class room. Every quill paused over parchment as they looked up at the students. Remus Lupin was at the head of the group, his sandy blond hair feathering over his tired eyes. He held himself proudly as he handed Professor Tibalt a slip of parchment. Behind him stood James Potter, his fist rather forcefully clamped on the back of the robes of Sirius Black, who James seemed to be dragging into the class room. But when he had finally drug his companion over the threshold, James quickly released Sirius and ran his hand through his ebony hair so that it gave the locks a wind swept appearance. Anexia barely registered as the final member of the gang, Peter Pettigrew, wheezed his way through the door; her gaze was held rather forcefully on Sirius.
His raven hair fell easily to his shoulders in strait lines, framing his perfect face. Anexia practically swooned as she propped her chin on her hand while the four took their seats. It was a sharp jab to her ribs that reminded Anexia that there was a need to breathe. She looked to her right, and saw a pair of green eyes glaring from behind red bangs. Anexia had to keep herself from laughing as her friend Lily Evans returned her piercing gaze to the front of the classroom. Anexia knew of the long standing rivalry between Lily and James-- and Anexia’s infatuation with Sirius prevented any sort of retaliation that Lily might think to plan.
The remainder of the Defense Against the Dark Arts class continued with out much excitement, and when the bell tolled at the end of class and audible sigh of relief heaved through the room. Anexia and Lily were the last to leave as they carefully tucked every paper and quill into its proper location. Linking arms, the two Ravenclaws exited the room and headed towards the tower to enjoy their free period-- it was a privilege that only those above their sixth year could enjoy. Now nearing the end of their seventh year, Anexia and Lily had finally mastered how to spend their free moments without too much worry of how they would get their work done and still have time to breathe. Chatting amicably as only friends can, the two meandered lazily down the halls. They had only just climbed the first of a number of stairs, when Anexia found herself unable to move-- a pair of strong arms had wrapped themselves dutifully around her waist. “Nexi, doll, where are you going?” Anexia cringed openly at the horrible nickname her boyfriend, Richard Godfree, had bestowed upon her. She turned easy, plastering a smile on her face as she looked up at his bright hazel eyes. Brushing a strand of blond hair from his forehead, Anexia shrugged. “Heading to the common room to finish my essay for Professor Slughorn.” Lily cleared her throat pointedly-- she knew as well as Anexia did that they both had finished their Potions essay the previous day. Anexia shot Lily a warning glance, and the red head remained silent.
“Oh come on Nexi,” Richard begged, hugging Anexia closer. “We could take a walk by the lake, or toss the Quaffle around on the pitch.” Anexia caught Richard cast a glance at Lily. “She could even come, if she wants.” Anexia sighed-- Richard disliked Lily for reasons that were yet to be disclosed. Shoulders slumped and head hanging, Anexia finally mustered the will to say “Okay.” And so the three of them traipsed back down the stairs, heading now towards the doors that lead to the grounds.
Anexia lost herself in her thoughts as Richard looped his arm protectively around her shoulders. Why hadn’t she broken up with him yet? Because you’re attached to him. A voice said mockingly in her head. No. Another voice replied. It’s because you’re afraid. Anexia had to admit: there was a certain something about Richard that scared her. He could have such a temper when things didn’t go his way-- like the beating Hufflepuff had taken at the last Quidditch match. Richard was their captain, and he refused to quit even after Ravenclaw was up by three hundred points. Anexia had a sinking feeling that if she tried to end the relationship now, something horribly dreadful would occur…
“What the hell is Sirius doing?” Richard’s shocked voice snapped Anexia from her reverie. She looked up to the end of the hall, and had to grab Lily’s sleeve for support when she saw what had caused the sudden outburst. Huddled together in a cluster were Remus, Peter, James, and Sirius. Sirius was holding a rather large bat between his slim fingers, stretching the membranes of the bat’s wings while James twirled his wand menacingly around his fingers. Remus and Peter were leaning casually against the wall, watching the action unfold. James, apparently unaware of the spying trio, pointed his wand at the ground and muttered an incantation under his breath. A rather large snake erupted from the end of his wand, and coiled dangerously beneath the writing bat, causing the creature to shriek with fear. James and Sirius both chuckled softly. “What’s that, Snivellous? Afraid of your own house mascot?” James whispered.
“Oh shit.” Anexia heard Lily whisper, and before any further movements could be made both girls had pulled out their wands and yelled the first curse they could think of.
“Vipera Evanesca!” That came from Lily, and the reptile vanished midway through a lethal strike.
“Rictusempre!” Anexia’s curse sounded at the same time, and hit Sirius squarely in the chest. He spiraled through the air and slammed into the opposing wall, promptly dropping the bat. Anexia stared in horror at what she had done-- Sirius’s hair was askew over his face, and his head was bowed low over his chest. She hadn’t meant to hit him with it… anyone but him… Lily’s high- pitched voice caused Anexia to turn her attention to the red head. She was yelling at James, and Anexia began paying attention in time to hear “…could have killed him! What the hell were you thinking? You’ve gone too far this time, Potter.” James rolled his eyes and absently pulled his glasses from his face so he could clean them on his robes. “We weren’t going to let the thing eat him,” he said as he returned the glasses to his face. “Just toy with him a bit.” Anexia looked back and forth between the amused James and the fuming Lily, before returning her attention to Sirius. He was still sitting on the floor, staring at his boots, but he looked up for just a moment to catch Anexia’s eye. Where she normally saw a glint of delight that usually accompanied Sirius abusing Severus Snape, she saw a shimmer of hurt and… was that… apology?
Meanwhile, Severus the bat was screeching angrily over their heads. A quick flick of Anexia’s wand caused the creature to promptly change form. One second there was a bat about to dive at James, the next there was a rather disheveled young man falling to the ground. Severus picked himself up rather quickly, only to lunge at James. Richard suddenly felt the need to make himself known, and he grabbed Severus by his elbows. James merely laughed. “You’re such a fucking prat.” Severus snarled, his eyes burning a hole into James eyes. “You just wait… I’ve got just the curse for you…”
“Oh what, Snivellous? The worst you could do is drown me in the sea of oil that seems to have taken over your body.” James said. Severus lunged again, but Richard held tight. Remus moved to tapped James’ arm. “Perhaps it would be best if we…” but James shrugged him off. “No. I want to teach this bloody prat a lesson for fucking with…” Suddenly he stopped. Eight pairs of eyes turned to the top of the stairs, were a rather angry looking Professor McGonagall. Anexia didn’t think she had ever seen the Transfiguration teacher looking for infuriated. “Oh thank goodness.” Lily said, weaving her way towards the teacher. “Someone who will listen to reason…” But Professor McGonagall lifted a hand to silence Lily mid- sentence. “I don’t care what happened, or who did it, but you all have detention.” The hall grew deadly silent, and remained so until McGonagall’s footsteps had faded. Then everyone exploded at once. Lily was livid, accusing James of scarring her permanent record. The rest of the men were yelling at each other, and several more rude names and gestures were exchanged. Silently, Anexia slipped down the hall, praying she could return to the Ravenclaw tower without incident-- tears of humiliation were streaming down her cheeks, and she didn’t think that anyone even noticed as she slipped behind a tapestry to take a short cut to the tower.
But someone did notice. Still sitting against the wall, Sirius watched with shame as Anexia vanished from the group.
