Chapter Two-Getting Settled In
Hermione couldn’t wait to go home. Remus would be
there, waiting for her, as a slave should, and she would set a few ground rules
with him. Other than that, everything
would be fine. She apparated
nearby her house, and walked up the front steps, Remus
standing outside her door. Hermione
couldn’t help but smile.
He looked so dashing, with his hair tossed all about, and
his bright blue eyes. Maybe I won’t sell him to Dumbledore, she thought.
“I read all the papers,” she said slowly. “And I know that you are bound to what I
say.” When she noticed Remus flinch, she smiled and brushed hair away from his
sweaty forehead. “I have no cruel
intentions, please remember that. You
may speak freely, make yourself food when you like, I’ve put all of your money
in my account. So if you need anything,
it’s almost like a joint account.”
“Thank you,” he murmured.
She smiled.
“You are free to wander about this house. I don’t think I have any real rules except that you remain a friend and companion to
Dumbledore. Stay loyal to the light side, that IS an order.”
Remus grinned.
Like I ever thought
differently. You may have a
relationship, if you like, please do NOT have sex on my bed, or on my couch.”
“May I ask you a question?” Hermione smiled.
“You mean another one?
Of course.”
“Why
did you do this for me?”
“Because Malfoy’s an evil git. And we couldn’t very well have you on our
side if you went to him. You’re a very
kind wizard, and it would kill me to know that you had to fight on Voldemort’s side.” Remus grinned, and Hermione handed him a key and some wizarding checks. “I
live in a muggle neighborhood,
please don’t let them know you’re a wizard.
And, when it gets near the full moon, we’ll simply give you a potion. Either the ministry will send us one, or
Professor Snape will brew one for us.
One…more thing.
Do not go into the den. It was my
father’s office. I…I’m trying to leave
it as it was,” she finished quietly.
Lupin
knew her parents had been killed by Voldemort. Mr. Granger must have been closer to his
daughter than Mrs. Granger. She had been
taken under Molly Weasley’s wing, with the financial
help of Harry and Albus, just before her seventeenth
birthday. After she turned of age in the
magical world, she inherited all of her parents’ belongings, with the exception
of what was sent to her grandmother in the states. He couldn’t imagine that kind of tragic loss. “Thank you again,” he whispered.
“It’s
no problem. Let’s go inside, and have
some tea, before we get settled.”
“Good
plan,” he said smiling. The duo went
inside and made a cup of tea each.
“Are
there any other rules I should know about?”
“You
may work, if you please, either in the muggle world
or the magic world. I will be away at
Hogwarts. I actually…intended on
‘selling’ you to the headmaster, because I have school this year.” The werewolf’s face coiled in disappointment. He really liked this muggle
home, and he’d be more than happy to look after it after what Hermione did for
him.
“I
could stay here. And…take care of your house,” offered Remus,
“While you’re at Hogwarts. I could
clean, and all of that.”
“Someone
has to be here to watch you during the full moon. Well, I suppose I could come home for the
three days surrounding the full moon…” she pondered aloud. “It’s not as if it would actually damage my
grades. Of course, I am head girl, so
you could come up during those three days as well.” Hermione turned to him. “We’ll have to discuss with the headmaster to
come to a final conclusion.”
“I
appreciate you putting so much thought into this, Ms. Granger.”
“It’s
Hermione, and THAT is an order.” Remus laughed.
“Then
you’ll just have to call me Remus.”
“I
will.” Hermione took his dishes and
walked to the kitchen.
“You
really don’t have to do that, Hermione.
I’m perfectly capable.”
“School
starts in a week, and then you’ll have to do it all by yourself for a great
deal of time. Please, let me.” Remus smiled. “Here…”
Hermione reached out and locked his hand in hers, leading him into the
living room, and up the back hallway stairs.
“This is my bedroom.” The walls
had pictures both muggle and wizarding
of tons of boys, posters of muggle bands she liked,
and a few muggle electronic devices he didn’t
understand. A double bed, a large black
desk, a dresser and a vanity, all that matched.
“I
see it’s fit to your liking.”
“It’s
messy, but it’s home.
I do like it, actually.” She opened the next door. “This is my old room. I took the big room, with my own bathroom, so
I didn’t have to walk down that creepy hall by myself.” Remus laughed. “This is where you’ll sleep.”
He
didn’t think he’d mind it so much. It
was decked out in dark red and a mild grey.
If it had been gold, it would have been just like the Gryffindor
tower. It too had a double bed, a large
wooden desk, and two dressers.
“I’ll
teach you how to work muggle devices another
night. Do you have any belongings, or
any clothing that you need help unpacking?”
Remus shook his head.
“The
ministry said it would be here tomorrow.
And I love this furniture; who decorated your house?” Hermione flushed.
“I
did most of it,” she answered. “Molly
and Charlie helped me. Molly’s a real
sweet woman, and I don’t know what I’d do without her.” Remus laughed.
“You
would be out doing dangerous activities without the slightest thought of
consequence. You would have pulled out
of the wizarding world and thrown yourself off a
bridge. And you would not have done so
well in school. And you absolutely would not be eating your
vegetables.” Hermione laughed.
“All
three are possibilities, but I don’t
think it was just her. Anyway, your
bathroom is down the hall. It doesn’t
have a shower curtain, but that can be arranged tomorrow, along with some other
stuff you may notice you do not have. Is
there anything else?”
“I
can’t thank you enough, Hermione. This
is incredibly generous.”
“I
do what I can,” she answered lightly.
“Now, off to bed with you. I’ll
be awake for another hour or so. I like
to read or write before bed to wind down.”
“Aye,
me too,” answered Remus. Hermione blushed, and headed into her own
room, awaiting her long night to come.
