Now… on with
chapter two!
__oo)|(oo__
A week later
Ilona was sitting on a bench in a half-finished garden. It contained pretty,
colorful flowers. Spring was here in abundance. She looked at the book in her
lap. It was one Godric had given her. She just could not become interested in
it. She sighed and watched birds fly overhead. They were so carefree. She
wished she could join them.
“Not being
giving enough to do?” The sharp voice said. Ilona looked over at Salazar. She
could not even muster enough to be angry.
“I’m just
suffering from a slight ennui.” She answered softly. She looked at him and
tried not to feel intimidated.
“Then let us
take a walk.” He stood in front of her with his elegant hand held out. Part of
her was screaming to take it, another was telling her to run. She placed her
small hand in his and he helped her stand. She set the book on the bench. The
other part of her was telling her she was making a big mistake.
“Aren’t you
busy?” She asked. He always seemed to be busy. That or maybe he just wanted
everyone to think that so they would leave him alone. He seemed to like his
solitude.
“I can spare
some time. It does not seem that Godric is sparing you any.” She looked up at
him. How did he know that? Godric had been busy building some of the towers
with the others. Soon they would be working on the inside. All the numerous
rooms needed to be attended too. She turned her view from his profile to the
ground. Godric was busy, that was all. Surely Salazar understood that. Salazar
was busy himself, but he was also taking a break. Why was Godric not? She
looked back at Salazar’s profile.
“He’s just very
busy with the castle. I’m sure it’s only temporary.” Even to her that sounded
weak. She didn’t want to doubt Godric, but he hadn’t been spending any time
with her. Blue eyes finally looked at her.
“Aren’t we all?”
It was barely a question. They were standing in front of the lake. It was not
flat today. There was too much wind for that. The wind would catch her hair and
pull at the curls. She relished the feel. “Would you sing?” To this Ilona
looked up and smiled. She did love to sing. She nodded and started to sing. Her
voice was clear and almost childlike. She had a wonderful vocal range. The song
was a calming melody brought to life by her voice. When she finished she look
up at him. He was gazing out over the lake.
“That was
beautiful.” He looked down at her to find Ilona smiling at him. Singing made
her happy, and she wanted to share that with others. As he looked at Ilona her
smile faltered. Why was he looking at her so?
“Thank you. I
really must be going.” She slowly backed away from him. She seemed to be doing
that a lot.
“If that’s the case, then some other time.” He even bowed
slightly to her. All she could do was nod and walk away.
Ilona reached
the garden feeling confused. The walk had done her some good. She still did not
understand Salazar Slytherin in the least. She felt drawn to him, however, and
that confused her most of all. Was it just gratitude for his help? No, for she
felt something the moment she looked at him. But what about
Godric? She felt so very confused.
“Where have you
been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” There stood a worried looking
Godric. How did that go? Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Of course,
Ilona did not think Godric a devil.
“I’m sorry, I
took walk.” She did not mean to worry him. He looked worried, but relieved to
see her.
“Alone?” That
confused her. What did it mater? Why did he want to know?
“No.” She did
not even have time to say anything else. She was not one to lie, anyhow.
“You were with
Salazar, weren’t you?” She had never seen Godric look angry before, and it was
a bit frightening.
“What does that
matter? I needed someone to talk to. I haven’t spoken to you in three days.”
She placed her hands on her slender hips. She tried to look as stern as
possible. Maybe stern would work.
“I don’t want
you near him.” Godric walked over to Ilona. He felt jealous. He wanted to be
the only man in her life.
“You can’t tell
me what to do, you are not my husband.” Ilona was starting to feel angry
herself. At those words the anger seemed to slip from Godric’s face.
“You’re right.
I’m not. I’m sorry. I just feel… I feel jealous.” His big hands stood unmoving
at his sides. She was right, they were not married. He wanted to be though.
“Godric, there
is nothing to be jealous about.” Her own anger melted away, and she was trying
to placate him. He looked down at her from his greater height. He decided to
try again.
“Will you marry
me?” Ilona looked at him. Her right hand played with her long hair out of
habit.
“I don’t know. I
can’t give you an answer right now. I’m sorry.” She watched disappointment
flood his face. She almost wanted to say yes right then and there just to see that
look erased from his face, but that would be unfair to them both. Godric
nodded. He looked into her hazel eyes. Today they looked greener due to the
green gown she wore.
“Then, will you
allow me to kiss you?” He seemed very hopeful. She nodded. She liked seeing him
happy. He smiled. She could not seem to refuse him. Godric bent over and Ilona
stood on her toes. He placed his lips on hers and encircled her waist with his
right arm. He lifted her off the ground so that he did not have to slouch over.
She had her arms on his shoulders for more support. The kiss ended slowly and
he lowered her back to the earth. Godric’s breathing was irregular, and Ilona
was breathing heavier. He held her close while their breathing stabilized. He
was hoping she would change her mind, but even if not this was a good start.
They meshed well together.
Ilona’s face was
resting against Godric’s large chest. They had shared kisses before, but none
quite like that. She pulled back to look at his face. He was smiling down at
her. His smile made her feel more at ease.
“I’m sorry if I
neglected you these past few days. I will correct the situation.” With that he
leaned over and placed another kiss on her lips. She kissed him back happily.
She had never felt like this in all her eighteen years. It was a heady feeling.
One of Godric’s hands was in her hair cradling her head, and the other rested
gently at her hip. This kiss was no less passionate than the first. Godric
ended the kiss. He had to. If it continued he would be forced to do more. She
was too much like a drug to him. He smiled.
“I must go now.
There are many things to be done.” With that he left, whistling a tune.
Ilona sank
gratefully onto a nearby bench. The kisses were wonderful, but should she
really be leading him on when she was not sure she would even accept his
proposal. She was so confused. Maybe Helga and Rowena had some opinions.
Ilona was lucky
to find the two witches in the library. Helga was writing on some parchment
with a yellow quill and Rowena had her elegant nose in a book.
Ilona thought
Rowena to be a beautiful woman. She was tall, only two inches shorter than Salazar
was. Her hair was slick straight and black that she wore in an elaborate
braided style. Thin brows arched over honey brown eyes. She wore a blue gown
trimmed with beautiful silver patterns. She had a silver necklace around her
long, slender neck. She was fourteen years older than Ilona, but did not look
much older than Ilona.
When she first
saw the two witches she was going to turn about and leave them to their work.
She did not want to be a bother. Helga spotted her, however.
“There you are,
child. I haven’t seen you around lately. What have you been up to?” Helga
placed the quill in the inkpot and gave Ilona her full attention. Ilona blushed
when she recalled what she had just been doing.
“I’ve just come
from the garden.” She paused, wondering how to word the rest, “I need your
advice. I’m not really sure what to do about Godric.” Ilona looked torn. She
should not have a choice. Godric was the only one who had shone true interest.
She could not shake the feeling of being drawn to Salazar.
“Well, waiting
to know how you feel is a very good idea.” Helga smiled at Ilona. She wanted to
help the young woman, but affairs of the heart were always complicated. She was
married herself, and had children Ilona’s age.
“You should let
her make her own decisions.” Rowena intoned from behind her book. “She’ll learn
nothing unless she does.” She did not even lift brown eyes from her book.
Rowena had been married for twelve years, and had two children who were being
watched by her husband as she worked.
“She’s young,
Rowena. Every young person needs advice.” Helga turned her kind eyes back to
Ilona. “Has he asked you to marry him?” To this Ilona nodded and looked a bit
distressed.
“Yes, and I
don’t know what to do. When I was younger I always envisioned myself marring
him, even with the age difference. I was never bothered by the ten years. Then
when he asked me the first time I couldn’t say yes. It seemed like a joke for
he’d always laugh it off. I’ve seen how he is with other women, and it seemed
to be he said it to every lady. Even now when I know he’s serious I have no
idea what’s holding me back.” Ilona looked worried. She knew what it was now it
was a certain arrogant wizard.
“Is there
someone else you’ve taken a fancy to?” Helga asked in full seriousness.
“No.” Ilona said
quickly, too quickly. Helga pushed onward.
“It’s alright if
you have formed an affection for Salazar. You’re young
and are allowed to change your mind.” Helga looked at the younger woman. She
didn’t want to force her in one direction. Salazar did not seem to be a bad
sort of fellow. The age difference was even greater, but that did not seem to
be a problem.
“Salazar?”
Rowena’s head came up from her book finally. So there was something that could
interest her more than that tome. It seemed shocking to Rowena that Salazar
would form an attachment to anything but his work and snakes. Ilona blushed at
Rowena’s scrutiny.
“No, it’s
nothing like that. I haven’t even been around him much.” Ilona played with her
hair, which either meant she was nervous, indecisive, or afraid.
“He’s a very
secretive man, and he’s very good at hiding his emotions. Even we have a hard
time reading him. We usually give up.” Rowena continued as if Ilona had not
even spoken. It would be interesting to see if anything would occur.
“I never said-”
She was cut off by Helga.
“Of course if
you can bring him out of his shell, or if he makes you happy, then that would
be lovely.” Helga was trying not to smile. She knew the girl was having a
difficult time. Ilona could only stare at the two older witches.
“As long as you can stand snakes.” Rowena added. Ilona felt
very confused. What did snakes have to do with anything? She did like animals,
but snakes were something she could take or leave.
“Umm, I think
I’ll be going now. I’ll see you later.” Ilona turned on her heel and walked out
of the library. She did not think she could take much more of that. As she was
walking down the hall she ran into Salazar. It figured. She had not been
looking where she was going. His hands shot out to steady her.
“You should be
more careful, I may not be there to catch you next time.” Ilona looked up. He
was not even smiling. She wished she knew what he was thinking.
“I’m sorry. I
was woolgathering and not paying any attention.” She took a step back.
“Yes, that was
apparent.” He looked so serious. Ilona would have felt hurt if she had not
known this was normal for him. She wanted to ask what he was thinking, but
refrained.
“I’ll be going
now.” She started to walk past him. Maybe leaving was for the best. Just
standing there looking at him was not helping her any.
“Ilona,” This
made her stop for he had never called her by her first name before, “take
dinner with me tonight.” Ilona looked at him thoroughly surprised.
“Of course.” It slipped out before she could even stop
herself.
“Three hours, in
my private chambers.” All Ilona could do to this was nod and watch his back as
he walked away. Shaking her head she turned about. Dinner, she was going to
have dinner with him. Should she have said no? She wanted to go, she knew that.
She decided to head back outside. Maybe the sunlight would help her. She had
not even made it outside yet when she heard Godric call her name. She smiled at
him as he approached.
“I forgot about
dinner.” He said.
“Dinner?” She was getting an odd feeling. She did not like
the direction of the conversation.
“Yes, dinner. We can have a picnic outside, I thought that
it be nice.” Godric was all smiles. He was envisioning her under the starts and
lit my moonlight.
“Well, yes, that
does so nice, but I can’t.” She started to play with her hair. She knew
something like this would happen. Nothing could be easy. Again she wished she
could be like a bird.
“Why can’t you?”
His face looked placated at the moment. She hated that he was going to make her
say it.
“I’ve already
made plans.” She looked at a spot on his chest. She was a coward for not
looking into his eyes, but she could not bring herself to do so.
“Oh. With Helga?” She finally looked back up to his handsome
face. She knew he was not going to like what she was about to say.
“No.” She did
not want to see his reaction.
“It’s Slytherin,
isn’t it?” Godric’s normally congenial eyes looked angry. Why him, he wondered
to himself? Why another man? Ilona sighed.
“What does it
matter?” She really did not want to have this conversation. She did not like
him being angry, it did not suit him. She did not want to hurt him, but they
were not attached. She should not be feeling guilty about this.
“What does it
matter?” He parroted, “I don’t want you alone with him. Merlin only knows what
he will do to you!” His large hands were balled into fists. He hated this more
than anything. Ilona looked nervously at Godric’s fists.
“Godric, calm down. He won’t do anything to me.” Ilona
pleaded. She even placed a small hand on his arm. He seemed to relax at her
touch.
“I just don’t
want you around him.” He said calmly. His eyes roamed her face. He wanted to
keep her safe. He wanted her for himself. He did not want competition.
“You don’t own
me. I can do as I please.” Her voice was gentle. She was trying to make him see
reason.
“Why him?” Now he seemed to be pleading. He would say that
if she was seeing anyone, but Slytherin really bothered him. That man was so
cold. He would only hurt one as fragile as Ilona. Ilona smiled gently.
“Godric, it’s
alright. I’m just going to have dinner with him. It’s not a commitment.” This
seemed to relieve him. He nodded and said,
“Then tomorrow night
we can dine.” He watched a smile spread her lips. He returned her smile and
placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. “I’ll more than likely be busy the rest
of the day. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He walked away feeling downtrodden.
