Chapter One
*X*
“Where the bloody hell am I?” Harry
groaned as he faded into consciousness.
“In the middle of nowhere,” a
voice called from somewhere to his left.
‘Whoever I’m with has a rather sexy voice…’ he thought before his
memory caught up with him. “Snape?!”
“Indeed…” the man replied.
Harry reached for his wand only to
find it missing.
“I’ve taken your wand until I can
be sure that you’ll not try to hex me,” Severus said,
“Your glasses are on the table to your right. Put them on and come to the
table. We can discuss our situation over breakfast.”
“Is it morning already?” he
mumbled, putting his glasses on and jumping out of the bed.
He sat down at the table and stared
at the pitiful bowl of porridge in front of him. “Is this what you call
breakfast?”
Severus
looked up from his book and raised an eyebrow at the boy. “If you think you can
do better, please- amuse me.”
He shot the man a glare and stood,
going to the kitchen. He moved about the room quickly and within twenty minutes
he was setting down two plates of bacon, eggs, and French toast. He smirked.
“Once again, I must confess myself
to be surprised,” Severus said, “Congratulations.
That’s twice in less than twenty-four hours. You’ve almost beaten the old
codger’s record…”
At the mention of Dumbledore,
Harry tensed again.
Severus
sighed, setting his fork down. “I think we need to talk about this…”
“What is there to talk about? You
killed him. That’s it,” Harry retorted.
“That is most certainly not it. You don’t even know the half of
it,” Severus snapped.
Harry pushed his plate away and
looked up at his former professor evenly. “Then tell me.”
“First of all, I didn’t want to kill Albus…
over the summer, Narcissa Malfoy
and Bellatrix LeStrange
came to me and asked me to take an Unbreakable Vow. I was to protect Mr. Malfoy, help him with his assignment, and, if he found
himself unable… complete it for him,” Severus
explained.
“Why didn’t you refuse?” Harry
asked.
“It would have given me away
instantly and Bella would have reported me to the Dark Lord,” Severus replied.
“So, you did all of this to save
your skin,” Harry sneered.
“Yes. I did what I had to do in
order to survive,” Severus said, “I’m not exactly proud of myself, but…” He sighed. “When
I returned to Hogwarts, I told Albus of the Dark
Lord’s plans. He, of course, had figured that the time would come when he would
be targeted…”
“How am I supposed to know that
you’re not lying?” Harry asked.
“Actually, I never thought that
you would. But I know that you’d believe Albus,” Severus said, standing and walking out of the room. He
returned a moment later with a familiar bowl filled with a shimmering, silver
liquid.
“Dumbledore’s pensieve…”
Harry breathed.
“Quite. I’m leaving now to report
back to the Order. Feel free to view all of the memories it holds. He saw fit
to leave you what he believed you would want to see,” Severus
said, disappearing into the floo.
The memories he viewed within the pensieve only confirmed what Severus
had said. Dumbledore had known of his
upcoming demise. He had known what Draco Malfoy had been up to. He had known about Severus’
Unbreakable Vow. And… he had told the
man to kill him. Begged him, even. All of the hatred
and disgust he’d seen on his Potions Master’s face that night… it hadn’t been
for Dumbledore… it had been completely self-directed.
Harry sat back in his chair,
silent tears streaming down his face. ‘Dumbledore…
was right to trust Snape… I was wrong. So wrong…’
“Did you get everything you
needed?” Severus asked.
Harry could only nod.
“Good. Is there anything else you
would like to discuss?”
“I’m sorry,” Harry said quietly.
“Excuse me?” Severus
said, caught off guard.
“I said that I’m sorry,” he
repeated, “I wrongfully accused you of being a murderer and… I’m sorry. I
should’ve taken the time to learn the whole story, but instead, I jumped to the
most convenient conclusions.”
Severus
took a moment to gather his composure before speaking. “Well done, Potter.
That’s three times in twenty-four
hours.”
Harry grinned at him. “So, I’m
just here for training?”
“Yes and no,” Severus
replied, “Yes, you will be training, but it is not ‘just training’. You will be learning very advanced defense spells, wandless magic, dueling, and dark magic. On top of that,
you will learn Occlumency and hand-to-hand combat.”
“So… is that it?” Harry said,
still grinning. “No lessons in Dragon Slaying?”
Severus
smirked. “No, Mr. Potter. We’ll stick to slaying Dark Lords, for now.”
Harry glanced at his watch and
sighed. “It’s almost lunch time. Shall I cook, then?”
“I would rather you did, unless
you fancy porridge for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” Severus
said.
Harry grimaced. “While that would
be better that what I was fed at the Dursley’s, no
thanks. I like to eat well when I can eat.” He immediately cursed himself
for giving away something about his life and rushed into the kitchen, carefully
avoiding the curious obsidian gaze aimed at him. He settled on toasted
sandwiches, fresh fruit, and milk and quickly began preparing it.
When he brought the plates in, he,
again, avoided Severus’ eyes. He sat down and set
about eating his food silently. However, the silence didn’t last long.
“What did you mean, about porridge
being better that what you got with your family?” Severus
asked, “I was under the impressing that they were rather well-off.”
Harry sighed. “They are.”
Severus quirked an eyebrow at him.
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
“It was a joke, okay? I was kidding,” he said, “Drop it, please.”
“Do not presume to tell me what to
do, Potter,” Severus snapped, “And that was no joke.”
Harry finally looked up at him and
what he saw in the man’s eyes shocked him. There was curiosity, impatience, of
course, and… concern? He sighed again, defeated. “They just- didn’t care for me
much. Hated me, actually. I wasn’t fed very often, and
when I was, it wasn’t anything good. Now, can we just eat?”
“I suppose that will be
acceptable,” Severus replied.
After a couple moments of tense
silence, Harry looked up from his food. “So… when does my training begin?”
“I thought you wanted to just
eat?” Severus said, smirking.
“Yes, I know, but could you answer
the question?” Harry snapped impatiently.
“Not if you’re going to take that
insolent tone of voice with me,” Severus said smoothly.
“I’m sorry… but could you please
answer my question?” he asked calmly.
“Not perfect, but better…” Severus muttered to himself before
addressing his young housemate, “Your training will begin this evening, after
dinner.”
“Why so late?” he said, picking at
his sandwich.
“Because I want to get a look at
where, exactly, we are and get a feel for the layout of the land,” Severus replied. He’d been watching Harry push his food
about for a few minutes and had had enough. “Eat, Mr. Potter. I won’t have a
charge of mine starving themselves.” Harry opened his mouth to argue, but Severus cut him off with a sharp, “Eat!”
He closed his mouth immediately
and lowered his eyes. “Yes, Sir,” he said softly, complying.
That demure, submissive response
shot straight to Severus’ groin and he had to bite
back a moan. ‘This can’t be happening… I
cannot be attracted to Potter!’
‘But- just look
at him! He’s nothing like his arrogant, overly confident, peacock of a father.
He’s a natural submissive…’ a seductive voice argued in the back of his
mind.
‘That doesn’t matter!’ he hissed back, ‘The boy a student, a Gryffindor, and the Boy-Who-Lived! Not to mention
that he’s not yet seventeen!’
‘He’ll be of age in a month,
you’re no longer a professor, so he’s not your student, house never mattered before… and that is all the more
reason for you to ally yourself with him strongly.’
‘There is still one problem. He will never want me in that way… I doubt
that he even likes men. Besides, who says that I want to be stuck with him?’
‘You can’t lie to me. I am you. I
know that you would revel in having him- in taking him… you need only to use
your abilities and- talents- and a Dominant to draw on him innate
submissiveness, get him to trust you, and then- simply proposition him. After
all, you can offer him more than most… pleasure, protection, security,
kindness, as well as devoted care for all of his needs- as long as he is
obedient.’
“Professor?
Professor!” Harry exclaimed, attempting to catch the
man’s attention.
Severus
looked at him, smirking. “Did you want something- Harry?”
He was startled by the sound of
his name in that sinful, velvet voice. What?
Sinful? Velvet?! Merlin’s beard, I’ve lost my mind…’
“I was just- wondering if you were
finished,” he said, avoiding eye contact.
“Yes, I am quite done. You, however, should clean your plate,” Severus replied, standing and taking his plate into the
kitchen.
Harry sighed, but hurried to
finish his food. He took his plate to the kitchen and stopped in his tracks
when he saw his former professor… doing
dishes. The man looked and smirked when he saw Harry.
“Set your plate in the sink,
please,” he said politely.
“You don’t have to do that,” he
replied, placing the in the soapy water, “I’m used to cooking and cleaning.”
“Nonsense.
You cook, I clean. It’s only fair,” Severus said.
Harry grinned, finding it amusing
that the most biased professor in Hogwarts was speaking to him about what was fair.
“Um… I was wondering…” Harry said,
“Er… I’d like to go with you to see- where we are.”
Severus
smirked. “That is fine. Be ready to go in a few minutes. I want to leave as
soon as I’m finished with these.”
He nodded, hurrying into the other
room and putting his shoes and socks on. He was waiting patiently when Severus stepped into the room. Without so much as a glance
at the boy, Severus walked out of the door, knowing
that he would follow. Which, of course, he did.
Harry couldn’t suppress a smile
when he walked out into the cold mountain air. Their little cabin was
surrounded by tall trees, the sun filtered the canopy to make beautiful
patchwork on the ground, and he could the distinct sound of rushing water. It’s absolutely perfect… he thought.
Severus
led Harry through the trees to find the river, which was rather wide, but was
shallow and gentle enough at the edges to swim in. After admiring the beauty of
it for a few moments, he turned to go back, taking
note of the fact that Harry was shivering. It was rather cold earlier in the day.
When they were back in the house,
he turned to Harry. “Next time you go out, I expect you to wear a cloak. I
won’t have you catching pneumonia. Now, go and sit by the fire.”
Harry only nodded, taking a seat
on the sofa. Where had this Snape come from? Despite
the harsh way in which the words were spoken, he could feel the underlying sincerity
and concern. He smiled, gazing into the fire. The mad had a nice side. Who
would’ve thought?
“Well, Mr. Potter, not many have seen my- ‘nice side’, as you put it,” Severus said, handing him a mug of hot chocolate before
seating himself in the large armchair.
Harry’s eyes widened and he looked
up at the man, sharply, narrowing his eyes.
“Yes, I was in your mind, Mr.
Potter. Though it doesn’t take much to read your thoughts when you’re
practically broadcasting them,” he said, smirking into his coffee.
Harry blushed and lowered his
eyes. “Sorry…”
“There is nothing to be sorry
about. One of the reasons you are here is so that you can learn to shield you thoughts, is it not- Mr. Potter?” Severus said, raising an eyebrow at him.
Harry nodded. Why is he calling me Mr. Potter again? he
thought, He called me Harry earlier… I
wish he’d do it again. He has such a sexy voice…
Severus
chuckled, making Harry jump. When those knowing onyx eyes turned on him, he
blushed furiously, realizing that he’d been in his mind the whole time.
However, he couldn’t break the dark, smoldering gaze.
“I have a sexy voice, do I?” he
purred, and then, “Harry…”
He shuddered at the suggestive
tone in the man’s voice. He finally broke away from the gaze and lowered his
eyes to his cocoa, blushing deeply.
Severus
chuckled again. “I must say, you are the first person to have described
anything regarding me as sexy in some time.”
“Surely not!” he exclaimed, then cursed himself for doing so.
Severus
quirked an eyebrow at the disbelief in Harry voice. “Indeed. Do you find me that attractive?”
Harry clamped his mouth shut and
focused his thoughts on anything but the traitorous answer to that question. Dragons… Quidditch…
Voldemort… er… I don’t
know… butterflies! ANYTHING!... damn…
“Shall I take that as a yes?” Severus asked, smirking.
Harry continued to refuse to meet
his eyes. “Could you stay out of my head, please?”
“I meant your silence,” Severus replied.
Harry hazarded a glance and his
mouth fell open in shock. The man was laughing
at him! Not with his mouth, no, but with his eyes. They shone with mirth.
“You have a twisted sense of
humor,” he said quietly, even as his own lips twitched into an amused smile.
“Which you apparently share,” Severus pointed out, sipping his coffee.
“This is too weird…” he said,
setting his empty mug on the table next to the sofa, “If somebody had suggested
yesterday, that I would be sitting, alone, with Severus
Snape, having a companionable conversation… I’d have
sent them to St. Mungo’s.”
“Circumstances have changed, and
in a very short amount of time, all of your previous notions of me were
shattered,” Severus said, “I’m rather surprised I
didn’t have to send you to St. Mungo’s. Glad, actually.”
“Glad? Why?” Harry asked.
Severus
grinned. “I would have missed out on a very
interesting opportunity.”
“I won’t even ask. I’m not sure
that I would want to know,” he said, sighing.
“Don’t worry. You’ll know soon
enough… Harry,” Severus said, his eyes shining with a
dark promise that left Harry enthralled and wondering.
“I- I think I’ll… get started on
dinner, now,” Harry said, retreating to the kitchen.
