CH 2 Leaving Spinners End
Opening the blanket, Lou looked at the sorry mess that was her clothes. They were all grimy with soot and ash. Even the ones she wore were filthy and she had work in the morning.
As quietly as she could, Lou laid the fire and lit it. Grabbing both pans she went to the kitchen, filled them with water, brought them back into the room and stood them on the two iron bars she’d rammed into the fire recess for just that purpose.
While the water was warming she took some of the garments and rinsed as much of the dirt from them as she could under the running tap. When the water in the pans was hot enough, she poured it in the sink and refilled the smaller one to heat up again.
Using the only bar of soap she had, Lou rubbed it into the wet clothes, then used an old nail brush to scrub away the grime. Once she was satisfied she rinsed the soap out and wrung them as tightly as she could. Most of the items she hung over the old redundant shower rail above the bath. The jeans and jumper she needed for tomorrow, she hung over the back of the chair in front of the fire.
Next she took the small pan of water from the fire and took it to the kitchen to wash herself.
Only then did she take the pork pie and a packet of crisps from the cupboard. Along with a mug of water, that was her main meal for the day.
Not that she cared. She was tired, warm, clean and back in her house. She would have to be careful when she got back from work tomorrow and decided to use the back door from now on, less chance of being spotted by perv that way.
Snuggling onto the sofa, Lou pulled the least sootiest blanket over herself and went to sleep.
Two weeks later and she was still managing to avoid misery guts next door. She kept her money on her now though, if he happened to catch her again she might not get a chance to retrieve it.
Sometimes she could hear noises from his house. In fact sometimes it sounded like someone talking from her fireplace. It was really weird. The words were always muffled, no matter how hard she strained to listen, but she was convinced they were voices.
It was Friday and Lou didn’t have to go to work tomorrow. Mr Key always gave her the weekends off. He also gave her extra food so that she wouldn’t go hungry over the weekend. He said they were items that never sold well and would only go off, so she may as well have them.
Lou never questioned this, she was grateful for the food and knew how to make it last without going too hungry. She had candles now so she could read in front of the fire instead of having to drag her chair into the kitchen.
She’d also got a clock and some batteries for her radio. The radio was kept near the wall furthest from the fireplace and she never turned it up high in case he heard it next door.
Just as she settled down to read her book before bed, Lou almost jumped out of her skin when she heard a loud crash from next door. She held her breath and listened for a while but it stayed quiet and she went back to her book. The she heard raised voices, several of them and more bangs and crashes.
Lou heard perv’s front door open and close loudly and there were more raised voices, this time out in the street.
They were shouting the weirdest things, words she’d never heard before.
But there were shouts of pain too and her curiosity got the better of her. Blowing out the candle, she carefully lifted the latch on the front door and opened it the merest crack, placing one eye against the opening to see what was going on. The perv was outside and he was waving his stick about. Other men were there and they had sticks too.
’What is it with these sticks?’ She wondered and saw a flash of red light come out of one stick and a white light from another. Both lights hit Mr perv and he fell to the ground. He was jerking like he was in pain and the other men were laughing as they moved back. They wore hoods and long black capes. One of then had backed up nearly to her door and she was just about to close it when he pointed his stick at Mr perv again and started to say something.
As much as Lou disliked the bloke that threw her out of her home, she hated unfair play. And this was unfair play. Four to one was wrong and Lou, who’d had her fair share of being bullied saw red. She could scrap with the best of them, she’d proved that in the past, but she’d never been involved with adult fights before and didn’t even think about what she was getting into. Lou would never know how much Lady Luck was with her that night.
With a scream like a banshee, Lou leaped from the doorstep and onto the mans back.
Taken totally by surprise, he fell down face first, hitting the front of his head on the kerb stone, Lou went down with him. While he was stunned and winded she grabbed his stick, seeing as that was what they were all using. Standing up quickly, she jumped hard on the middle of his back. The sound of bones cracking did nothing to phase her as she screamed again, waving the stick at the other three men. Sparks shot out of the stick when she waved it about and she babbled nonsense words like she’d heard them do to see if anything happened.
It didn’t so she ran and jumped at the next available hooded figure.
The three Deatheaters stood shocked and amazed when a small half clad boy came flying from a doorway and floored Lucius Malfoy, leaving him out cold on the cobbles. Before any of them could get their wits about them she struck again and took down McNair. He fell backwards with the force of her momentum, smacking his head hard on the ground. She grabbed his ears through the hood and slammed his head onto the path beneath them. ’Two down, two to go.’ She thought.
Goyle Snr and Lestrange recovered their wits quickly and aimed their wands at Lou.
“I don’t know who you are kid, but stand up and don’t move.” Lestrange told her.
“Fuck you.” She screamed, making to lunge at him. As soon as she moved she saw a flash from one of the sticks. “Ha. You think a bit of light’s gonna hurt me you big bully.”
She looked down at her right leg and saw a long gash from hip to knee, blood pumping from the wound.
She tried to take a step and her leg buckled beneath her as the pain suddenly struck. “Shit.” She yelled, and tried waving her stick at them again.
One of them laughed at her and she forced herself back onto her feet, ready to pounce on him if he came any closer.
He did and she let fly, clawing at his face with her fingernails. But Lou had lost a lot of blood and she was weakening fast.
She barely registered another flash of light before the man she was clawing at suddenly disappeared from under her and she crashed to the ground.
Severus recovered enough to get to his feet. He saw two of his opponents out cold and another struggling with a boy. The youth was winning too by the looks of him. ‘Bloody hell he’s downed Malfoy and McNair and now he’s attacking Lestrange.’
He noticed Goyle advancing on the struggling pair and sent a stunning spell at him. The he noticed McNair starting to overpower the boy and sent a stunning spell his way too.
They both crashed to the ground as Severus snatched up a couple of small stones and said; ‘Portius’. Shoving the portkeys into the hands of the two stunned Deatheaters, he dragged them over to the other two and they disappeared.
He took a minute to regain his breath and looked down at the boy. He was amazed to see it was the same boy he’d thrown from next door earlier that day, and he’d just saved his bloody life.
“Rennervate.” He gruffed, then noticed the hex he’d taken to his leg.
“Oww. It hurts.” Lou moaned as she opened her eyes. When she saw Mr perv standing over her she took fright and tried to scramble backwards on her bottom.
“Do not try and move you stupid boy. I’m going to try and stop the bleeding.”
“No, get away from me. Your all nuts with your bloody sticks. Oh fuck, my leg.”
“Precisely, now keep still. You probably have a severed artery and will bleed to death if you don’t let me help you.”
Lou watched him wide eyed as he knelt down and took hold of her leg. When she saw him point his stick at her leg she tried to get away again.
“What the bloody hell are you, some kind of wizard or something?”
“That is precisely what I am, and you are outside in your underwear and t shirt and very little else, apart from a very bloody leg. Now shut up and lie still, or I shall have to do what I did this afternoon.”
Lou felt her consciousness wavering again, but she didn’t know if it was from loss of blood or the threat of what Mr perv said.
After using his wand to stem the flow of blood, Severus picked him up and was about to carry him to the abandoned house, thought better of it and took him instead to his own house. His eyes flitted about the street, wary in case any more Deatheaters showed up.
Laying him on the threadbare sofa he waved his hand, revealing a hidden door that led to the kitchen, through there he headed down to the cellar, returning moments later with several bottles and some bandages.
Kneeling beside the sofa he deposited the various items on the floor and took hold of the boy’s leg.
He used his wand again to clean away the blood and grit. The hex had sliced deeply from knee to hip and he needed to remove the boys pants if he was going to heal the wound. A quick wave of his hand and Lou’s knickers disappeared.
Severus did a double take when he realised he was a she.
‘Marvellous.’ He thought. ‘Not only do I now owe a life debt to a muggle, it has to be the bloody female of the species. And why her? He’d thrown her out of the damned house next door. What was she doing back here? Why had she got involved with something that was clearly not her concern. Especially when she fought in his favour.’ Severus decided that females were harder to figure out then muggle’s, and this one was both.
Picking up one of the bottles, he poured a viscous, yellow liquid into the wound. The gloopy mixture made its way from her hip, down the leg to the knee. As he watched, the large opening slowly began to close from deep inside, working it’s way towards the outer skin. With a quick muttered spell, Severus closed the wound and applied some yellow paste from a large jar. That done he applied a bandage, repaired her knickers and spelled them back on.
Taking a smaller phial of green potion he stood and propped her into a sitting position.
“Oww. Gerroff.” She moaned. “Go away.”
“Considering this is my home, I do not think I will. Now drink this.” Severus held the bottle to her lips and she feebly tried to push it away.
“No. Where did they go?” Lou opened her eyes, looking round wildly for the men she’d been fighting with.
“They are no longer here. Now, I have healed your leg but you have lost a lot of blood. Drink this, you will feel much better.”
“I’m not drinking anything. Get off me.” She hissed at him while she tried to push his arm from behind her back and get up at the same time.
Unfortunately, the massive blood loss left her week and dizzy, but Severus held onto her as she slumped forward.
Taking advantage of her semi conscious state, he emptied the healing potion down her throat, holding her mouth closed until she swallowed. He followed this with a blood replenishing potion then a sleeping potion before laying her back down.
One conjured blanket later, and she was tucked up fast asleep on his sofa.
Once he’d cleared everything away he went outside to secure her front door and returned, putting up extra wards before getting himself a whiskey. A very large whiskey.
One thing was certain, Spinners End was no longer a safe place for him to stay. Or her.
Somehow the Dark Lord had discovered his duel role and sent a consignment of Deatheaters to kill him. Traitors were not given a second chance. The Dark Lord would be after him once it was discovered that Malfoy and the others had not succeeding in bringing about Snape’s demise.
Severus conjured his patronus and sent a message to Dumbledor. It would not be long before the next group of Deatheaters showed up and Severus wanted to be away from here before they did. The trouble was, he had no idea what to do with the girl.
Two minutes later Albus appeared in Severus front room, along with Tonk’s and Shacklebolt.
“Severus. I just received your message. Why did you not come straight to Headquarters?” Albus asked.
“I have a slight problem Headmaster.” Severus turned toward the girl sleeping on his sofa. “I cannot leave her, had it not been for her I would be dead. She was injured Headmaster and they know what she looks like and where she lives. I am unsure what to do with her.”
Tonks stepped up to the sofa and knelt bide the sleeping girl. “Who is she?”
“A muggle street child. She’s been living in the abandoned dwelling next to mine. The noise must have disturbed her and she decided to join the fray. Surprisingly enough, she took down Malfoy and McNair, rendering them both unconscious. I believe she may have given Lestrange a run for his money, had she not taken a nasty slicing hex to her right leg.”
Tonk’s lowered the blanket and saw the length of the dressing. She let out a low whistle. “Must’ve been some slice Professor. Not such a kid either, just undernourished I‘d say.”
“It was, she suffered a severed artery, ligament and muscle damage, she also lost a lot of blood. Child or not, I am now unfortunately indebted to her.”
“We shall have to take her with us Severus. If .. when they come, they will not spare her because she is a child.”
Severus wrapped the blanket tight around the girl and picked her up. The four adults and one young girl stood on the cobbled street as Albus Dumbledor waved his wand in an intricate pattern over Severus’ house. Then, at the Potion Masters request he did the same with Lou’s. Both houses were now protected and unplotable.
A second later they were standing in front of a black painted door with a silver knocker. This was number 12 Grimauld Place, headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix.
Severus carried his blanketed bundle directly into the drawing room, surprising Molly Weasley and her husband Arthur who were in conversation with Remus Lupin and Alistor Moody.
Molly jumped to her feet. “Good heavens Professor, what have you got there?”
“A muggle girl. She was injured during the Deatheater attack.”
“And you brought her here? Are you mad?” Moody bellowed. “You can’t bring muggles into headquarters.”
“He can and he has Alastor. We could not leave her behind, they know her now and her life is in danger. She helped Severus to fight them off. So here she will stay until we can come up with a better solution.” Said Albus, his eyes hard as he looked at Moody.
“Well I hope you know what your doing Albus. What if the Ministry find out? You know what they’re like about muggles in the magical community.”
“I see no reason for them to find out Alastor. The Ministry knows nothing of this place and would not be able to find it if they did.”
“Poor child.” Molly made her way to the sofa where Severus laid the girl down. “What’s her name? How old is she?”
“I have no idea Molly. She should sleep until morning. I gave her a sleeping draught once I healed her, but be warned, she is rather feisty. Do not turn your back on her, she took down Malfoy and McNair single-handedly and would have taken Lestrange had she not lost so much blood.”
“I heard those three turned up at the Ministry along with Goyle senior. Two were stunned and two were seriously injured. She was really the one who caused the injuries?”
“She was Arthur.” Said Snape.
“Apparently Malfoy has several broken ribs and a punctured lung. McNair has a severe skull fracture and several other problems related to the brain. Tell me Severus, are WE safe?”
“I have no idea Arthur. I do not even know why she became involved in the first place.”
“Pity she’s just a muggle. She would have made a good auror.” Put in Moody gruffly.
“Right now she needs somewhere to sleep. Is there a room she can use Molly?”
“Follow me Professor. She can have Ginny and Hermione’s room. Are you sure she’ll stay asleep until morning?” Molly asked as she eyed the girl warily.
“If she does not, I shall be the first to know.” Severus picked the girl up from the sofa and followed Molly up the stairs to the first floor. “I shall ward the room and take the one next to it.”
Molly opened a door and Severus laid Lou on the first bed after Molly pulled the covers down.
“You might want to find her some night attire Molly. She does not have much on at the moment.”
With that he left the bedroom and Molly was left alone with her.
“We’d best have a look at you my girl.” Molly muttered, more to herself since Lou was still asleep. She removed the blanket, letting out a small ’Oh’ of surprise when she saw the girl wore only a t shirt and knickers. Judging by the size of the bandage, the wound was a fair size too. Starting at her knee, the bandage continued up and wrapped around the girls lower abdomen.
Using her wand Molly soon had her cleaned up, dressed in one of Ginny’s nightgowns and tucked up in bed.
When she stepped out of the room Severus was waiting for her.
“What happened to her clothes Professor? And that wound looks pretty big.”
“I imagine her clothes are wherever she left them before coming out to fight. As for the wound, yes it was a rather bad slicing hex. A major artery was severed. It will heal, but she will have a scar.”
He warded the room and Molly showed him to the room next door. “Will this one be alright for you Professor? It Percy’s and it is clean.”
“It will do fine Molly, thank you. Meanwhile I have a raging thirst and a hankering for some of your fruitcake. Do you have any?”
Molly gave him a flattered smile and flushed slightly. “The kettles on and yes, I do have a couple of fruitcakes in the pantry.”
They headed down to the kitchen and found the others had moved in there, all sat at the large table that dominated the centre of the room.
Once he had his second cup of tea and eaten his fill of cake, Severus told them the whole sorry tale of the muggle next door, from hearing her banging and bumping to arriving here.
“I can’t believe you would be cruel enough to throw her out Severus.”
“Lupin. Had she stayed gone, she would not be injured and under this roof now. The wards were in place to deter muggles, not attract them.”
“If she’d stayed gone Severus, you’d be a dead man.“ Lupin told him.”
“Precisely. And I would not have to sit here listening to you rabble about how the terrible Potions Master evicted a street girl from her home to keep her from danger.” Without another word, Severus stood and left the room.
He marched up the stairs, lowered the wards and checked on the girl. Molly had done a good job of cleaning her up and she looked almost angelic in a white cotton nightgown. One hand was curled into a loose fist by her head and the other was draped across her small frame on top of the covers.
Turning he left the room and re warded it so he would know when she woke.
Once in his own room, he stripped off his clothes and went to the adjoining bathroom for a shower before climbing into bed.
