Chapter 2
Draco was currently sitting in a room with none other than young Harrietta's uncle. It seemed that although she never corrected him and even referred to the man as "Father," her true parents died early on in her life.
And this uncle seemed to Draco the reason why she was not yet wed.
"I am sorry, sir, I do not believe I fully understand what you are saying." Draco was actually more than sure of what was being said, but it just could not be true.
"I am saying that your desire to court Miss Potter is denied. I think that is simple enough, even for you. However if you wished to take her to be your wife, it could be easily arranged."
That was the third time Vernon Dursley had said this, and still it made no sense.
"So I may not go through the courtship rituals in any case: however I may take her home?" at Vernon's nod, Draco continued. "Surely that would tarnish, not only my but also your reputation irrevocably."
"I am not here to speak of reputations, Mr. Malfoy, if you wish my daughter's hand in marriage there will be no courtship. In fact there is likely to be no ceremony." Vernon Dursley gave off an air nothing but love for what he considered his own daughter, but it was obvious that she was not born of any of his fruits. He was a man whose weight easily proved his wealth. And it seemed he was used to pushing that weight around as he negotiated with Draco. He spoke as if what he was saying was perfectly reasonable.
"You wish for her to be looked down upon then," was the only reply he could come up with.
"Mr. Malfoy, I believe we are through with this conversation. I see that Miss Potter is obviously not what you have been looking for, and for that I am sorry. However I have other things to attend to today."
Draco sat in stunned silence for all of two seconds before, "I hope that was not a dismissal, although it clearly sounded like one."
"Mr. Malfoy, you are not the first one to ask for this favor. And you will not be the last. I will not be negotiating these terms, and clearly that is all you want to do." Draco knew he could not accept these terms. But with each passing sentence from Mr. Dursley's mouth it sounded more and more like Harrietta had been overly wistful when she said she felt trapped. Draco was beginning to fear that she really was being held captive, however much Mr. Dursley seemed to love her.
"What other terms are there?" It seems that Draco was considering this ludicrous idea.
Vernon seemed surprised but he moved to his desk, he returned with several leafs of parchment. "It is not a standard marriage certificate. It simply guarantees that you will keep her safe and provide for her all the necessities of life, including food, shelter, hygienic and other health necessities etc."
Draco nodded actually that was standard.
"The only other stipulation is that from this union there can be no offspring."
Suddenly it was no longer standard. "Excuse me."
"The Potter line is to end with Harrietta."
"How am I to guarantee that?" Draco knew it highly unlikely that he could ever sire a child with her, however she was certain to be frustrated enough to seek that sort of comfort elsewhere.
"She is not fertile, it should not be too much of a hardship."
Draco was beginning to see red. "And how pray tell would one know that she is not fertile, if she is indeed as pure as you intend me to believe."
"Surely you misunderstand me. I only meant that she is not likely to be very fertile. My wife is her aunt and was only able to produce one child. Harrietta's own mother was fault with the same condition."
Draco was fairly certain that he did not believe that.
"I can't guarantee this stipulation."
"Either you do, or you leave."
It seemed that Mr. Dursley was certain he would end the Potter line, perhaps so that upon Harrietta's death her inheritance would return to his family. "And the heir to my family is forfeit then?"
"There is no stipulation against affairs of the heart, or body. There is also no stipulation against any type of adoption of lone children. I know she has a love of family life, she would greatly enjoy any scenario where she is able to care for children. However they may not be from her own blood. Is that understood, Mr. Malfoy, or must I repeat this several more times as well."
Draco had decided. This man was clearly out of his mind. The sooner he was able to get this girl out of his hands the better. So he signed those papers. And it did not go unnoticed that Mr. Dursley ordered his solicitor, his son, and wife to come see the signing. Nor did it go unnoticed that just below his signature there was rider stating:
If any of these conditions are not met, as agreed upon by all parties involved regardless of details, it is within all rights of the paternal figure or familial heir of the paternal figure of the bride to punish and, or, execute all participants of the undermining of this contract.
He did however not notice that Mr. Dursley had been more than truthful when he suggested that there would be no ceremony. For it had just occurred ... without the bride.
As Draco was lead out of the room by a servant he heard Mr. Dursley's parting words to him "I would not worry so much about parents reactions to bringing home a bride. They will likely be happy that you brought anyone home at all, no matter what inappropriate conducts it implies in its swiftness."
Draco kept his calm as much as possible. Mr. Dursley had done no more than make him more certain that he had done the right thing. He clearly was a madman, even if he was madman who understood his family's worries.
***
Behind him, Mr. Dursley hoped that his antics only added to Draco's concern for his daughter. It was the only reason he could see for Mr. Malfoy's actions. Vernon truly hoped that it was enough to keep his daughter safe. He gladly would've kept her under his roof forever, but most of those stipulations and to be put in place to keep her safe because all she wanted to do was see the world outside their castle gates.
He hoped she at least appreciated his attempt. He hoped he had done the right thing.
