Chapter 2
10 minutes later down in the dungeons. . .
“Come on in Hermione. I’ll be right with you.” Severus called to her over his shoulder before flooing down to the kitchens for something to eat. While waiting for the food to arrive Severus moved towards his overflowing bookcases in search a specific tome containing the information he wanted to talk to Hermione about.
“Severus what’s the matter? What is so important the couldn’t wait for tomorrow?” Hermione grumbled while making her way to one of the armchairs in front of the fireplace. Severus walked over to his chair
"The reason I wanted to talk to you is simple really," he said, clutching the book he had been searching for. The food he ordered appeared in the center of the coffee table. "Firstly, allow me to express my sympathy toward your Mr Weasley’s ailment. Secondly," he added quickly clearing his throat, sentiment not coming naturally to him, "upstairs in the infirmary you said something about seeing the same dark aura that is currently surrounding your fiancé. You said that you had seen it on the battlefield. This statement has caught not only my own attention, but also that of Albus and Bill Weasley."
"So what was so special about it? I did see auras that dark during the battle," Hermione stated a bit defensively.
"Hermione, I understand that you must be under quite a substantial amount of pressure, but would you please be quiet and let me finish?" snapped Snape. "As much time as you spend in the Hogwarts’ library, not to mention my own, I’m surprised you don’t realize the significance of such a statement. Here, I suggest that you read the passage right there." Snape handed Hermione the book and leaned back in his chair. To ease the consequential tension caused by the topic of conversation he set himself to preparing them both a cup of tea from the tea service that had been delivered earlier.
After reading and rereading the page Snape handed her, Hermione was speechless, almost. “You have got to be kidding me. It’s not possible, it can’t be. There is no fucking way,” she yelled almost knocking over the cup of tea Severus prepared for her by tossing the heavy tome onto the coffee table in front of them.
“I can tell you’re in shock so I’m going to ignore your little outburst,” he drawled.
“Shock? Bloody hell Severus, you and I both know that is the understatement of the year.”
“How long have you been able to see auras without the use of a spell?” asked Snape.
“I’ve always seen them since before I even got my Hogwarts letter.” stated a frazzled Hermione. “Before I graduated they have always been faint, so faint that they were easy to ignore. Why do you ask?”
“That’s a spectacular gift you have, it is extremely rare.” Severus paused to draw a controlling breath. “You’re going to hate this but it is only found in the line of a seer,” he finished in a bit of a mumble.
“What?!? ” sputtered Hermione choking on her tea, “You mean divination. I am no seer, you know I detest that branch of magic. I don’t even consider it a legitimate branch of magic.” Hermione grimaced as her mind suddenly conjured up an image of herself in her former Divination teacher's robes. 'Dear Gods...What have I done to deserve this?'
Meanwhile on the stairs towards the dungeons...
“Ah Mr Weasley, I see we are headed in the same direction. Going to see if Severus has told Miss Granger about her unique ability?” Dumbledore asked knowingly. Bill was not at all surprised that Dumbledore knew where he was headed.
“Yeah, I was almost to my rooms when I remembered Mione said she had seen the same aura on during the fighting. I mean I already knew she was an extremely powerful witch in her own right without my brother and Harry but I had no idea she was that powerful.”
“She is a remarkably gifted young woman isn’t she?” asked Dumbledore not really expecting Bill to answer.
"Yes, I suppose she is." came his muttered reply.
Back in the potions masters’ rooms...
Snape was struggling to contend Hermione's famed Gryffindor stubbornness. "Hermione, have no doubt that I too find the subject abhorrent, but right now it doesn’t matter how we feel about divination. I did not say that you were a seer per say, you just possess one of their gifts. Maybe somewhere in the history of your family, most likely on your mothers’ side, there was a seer, but none of her children or any of the generations following were magical. Until you that is." explained Snape.
Hermione scoffed. "That truly is an interesting theory, but how could that be possible? I know for a fact that there has never been a witch or wizard in my family at least there should have been a witch or wizard before me." she said, still sounding skeptical.
Before Snape could answer he was interrupted by a knock on the door. While Severus answered the door Hermione called a house elf to clear away the remains of their dinner and to bring more tea thinking about something her mum always says. When things are down, depressing and confusing, a solution is always at hand: have a sit down and a nice cup of tea. After hearing that so many times Hermione has to admit that statement is supprisingly true! Tea does rather help throw things into perspective.
“Good evening Albus, Weasley. I wish I could say I was surprised to see you Headmaster but I’m not. Do come in. Mr Weasley it is a bit of a surprise to see you here, but I'm afraid the latter still applies.” said Snape stepping out the doorway so the two men could come in.
“Severus, my boy you know I could never deny you my company. Lemon drop?” Professor Dumbledore said jokingly as Snape glared at him. ”Miss Granger we were hoping you were still here. I’m sure by now you have been filled in on your gift.”
“Yes he has Professor though I am finding it hard to believe. How is Professor McGonagall? She will be alright won’t she?” asked Hermione hoping her favorite teacher would be okay.
“Minerva will be back in top form after a few days of rest.” replied Dumbledore getting back some of the twinkle that has been missing the past few weeks.
“I’m glad to hear she’ll be okay,” she said sparing him a small smile.
“Mione how are you holding up?” asked Bill pulling her into a brotherly hug before she could answer. “You know you are going to be an even more integral part of finding a cure for Ron.” he stated taking a sip of the tea Hermione handed him. “There’s something about this curse that I just don’t understand. Harry said it was meant for him so maybe the spell was supposed to be like Voldemorts’ last revenge. If he didn’t survive then Harry wouldn’t be around to get the glory and praise of being the savior of the wizarding world. That’s how people are going to treat him now but if the spell had hit him-”
“Then Voldemort would have finally succeeded in getting rid of Harry Potter once and for all. Something that eluded him in life” said Hermione cutting Bill off.
“That explains Potters’ outburst in the infirmary earlier then. He blames himself because his best friend cared enough for him to sacrifice himself giving Potter enough time to destroy the dark lord.” drawled Severus.
“Now Severus you know he doesn’t see it that way. He sees another person hurt because of him.” stated Dumbledore.
“This is going to be harder on him than when Sirius died. He never really forgave himself for that or the battle in the Department of Mysteries. So many of us got hurt before the Order got to us. Ron was attacked by a brain from a tank, I was hit with a curse that knocked me unconscious. Afterwards Harry thought that if he distanced himself from the people he cared about and everyone else that we would all be safe from Voldemort and his Death Eaters.” explained Hermione draining her teacup and heading to Snapes’ bar in the corner of his living room. “I don’t know about anyone else but I need something stronger than tea right now,” she suggested.
“I agree, something stronger than tea is a good idea for this conversation.” replied Dumbledore.
“Let me help you with those drinks Hermione,” Snape offered. He returned to their seats in front of the fire with a bottle of fire whiskey followed by Hermione with four tumblers. “What Potter never realized was that even if your brother and Hermione weren’t his friends they still would have been targets. Your brother was a target because his whole family is connected to the Order and openly loyal to Dumbledore. And you Miss Granger were a threat to their ideals.”
“I agree Mione, you were on their hit lists right under Harry and Dumbledore. You are living proof that muggleborns aren’t inferior to purebloods,” stated Bill. “But Harry is like family to us we don’t blame him for what’s happening to Ron. Ron made a choice that he felt would be for the greater good and I’m proud of him.” he said saluting with his fourth glass of Old Ogden’s.
“Here, here. To all our comrades- in- arms who weren’t here to see the end,” slurred Hermione pulling out her wand to summon another bottle of fire whiskey.
“What do you think you are doing?” bellowed Severus.
“What does it look like, I’m gonna summon another bottle,” was the slurred response he got back.
“Oh no you won’t put your wand away right now. I will get it. The last thing I need is for you to be waving your wand around while you are well on your way to being utterly pissed” said Snape and with a wave of his hand two more bottles of fire whiskey floated over.
“On that note children I bid you goodnight. I fear I am far too old to be spending the night in the company of our friend Old Ogden’s. I will see all of you and young Mr Malfoy tomorrow around noon in my office,” said Dumbledore getting up and heading to the door. One and a half bottles later of the potent magical whiskey, Hermione had passed out on the couch forcing Bill to sit on the floor.
“As much as Potter and his friends, her included,” Snape said nodding towards the passed out Hermione, “were pains in my arse I sometimes felt sorry for them. They had to grow up too fast with the threat of war and Voldemort. But sometimes with all the trouble they got into I wanted to kill them myself.”
“I know what you mean, after hearing about their adventures year after year it made my job sound safe.” laughed Bill. “I never understood that. I mean year after year they found themselves in some kind of danger. When Fred and George told me about their first year and them going after the Sorcerer’s Stone I couldn’t believe it.”
“What I couldn’t believe was an eleven year old solving my logic puzzle. If you tell anyone I said this I’ll deny it, but she reminds me of myself at that age sometimes, but the moments are few and far between. She tied all of the records I set with my O.W.L.s and my N.E.W.T.s.”
“Trust me I doubt anyone would believe you said something nice about one of the ‘Golden Trio’ even if I told them,” laughed Bill. “But in all the years I’ve known Harry and Hermione, in all the years they have been friends with Ron I’ve noticed that their friendship hasn’t been able to hold up against all obstacles. I remember quite a few times they stopped speaking to each other for long periods of time over trivial things.”
“Do you believe that Potter and Hermione will be able to keep their friendship going through what’s happening to your brother?”questioned Severus.
After thinking for a few minutes Bill finally answers. “You know I haven’t got a clue if their friendship will survive They have barely spoken to each other much in the past few weeks leading up to the final battle. Ask me again in about a week or two into you, me, Draco and 'Mione researching a cure for Ron and I could probably give you answer then.” *Yawns* “I’m beat. I think I’ll go get some rest before we have to meet with the Professor. Do you want me to take her back to her room?” Bill asked pointing at the passed out Hermione on the couch.
“No you can leave her there it’s certainly not the first time she’s fallen asleep on that couch. I’ll get her a blanket. You can use the floo to get to your rooms. Good night,” Severus drawled.
“Alright see you tomorrow then,” yawned Bill. The last sounds heard in the potions masters chambers on this night was the Whoosh of the castles internal floo system and the crackling of the fire. As Severus got ready for bed his mind kept replaying all he knew of the curse used on the youngest Weasley male so far and he wondered as he blew out the candles in his bedroom where Malfoy learned a curse so powerful.
