‘Gluttony is an emotional escape, a sign something is eating us.’
-- Peter De Vries
Discomfort. That was the first thing Hermione felt when she became conscious again. Groggily, she opened her eyes. Everything was a bit blurry and her head hurt like she’d been hit with a Bludger. Rubbing her temples, she waited a few moments before trying to look around once more.
She saw a ceiling. Very basic. Like most any of the ceilings in Hogwarts. But that didn’t seem right to her. She could have sworn that she was in the Forbidden Forest with Malfoy.
Except, no, she hadn’t been with Malfoy. It was all coming back to her. They had a fight. They split up. And then she got frightened and started to run. Stupid thing for her to do since she ran straight into a brick wall. Or at least that was what it had felt like.
And, though she couldn’t be sure, she could have sworn that she had fallen. Down a hole.
None of it made any sense.
Tentatively, Hermione sat up. She was vaguely aware that she was in a room and there was a long table with chairs. But what she was more aware of was her legs, which were tangled with Draco Malfoy’s.
He groaned.
Immediately she pushed herself back away from him. Her back hit a wall but she was at least far enough that their legs weren’t touching anymore. But to be sure she brought them up to her chest and wrapped her arms around herself.
He groaned again and sat up.
“What in Merlin’s name?”
He was just as disoriented as Hermione had been. His last memory was running through the woods, fleeing from the monster that was chasing him. Or not chasing him. The details were still fuzzy.
When he finally looked up, he met her eyes from across the way.
“Granger? What did you do?”
Her glare pierced through him in an instant.
“I didn’t do anything and I do not like how you keep assuming things to be my fault.” Even in an utterly confused state, she still knew how to bite back.
“Where are we then?” His eyes roved over the room. It seemed like some room inside of the school, except that it was very…plain. Bare white walls, nothing but a single long table with chairs around it. There were no windows. No door.
Had they gotten back?
He doubted it. He couldn’t think of any room that was even remotely comparable to what he was seeing now.
It was practically empty.
And he also couldn’t figure out why he was in this mysterious room in the first place. It certainly wasn’t detention in the Forbidden Forest.
Closing his eyes briefly, he tried to piece it together in his mind.
He’d been running from the monster, he remembered that much. Fear like that was hard to shake. But then he crashed into something in front of him.
After that…nothing.
Suddenly his body came back to him all at once and he was very conscious of the pain in his jaw, as well as the fact that he was absolutely parched. His throat was so dry he could barely swallow, and it tasted like dirt was coating this inside of his mouth.
If only he had something to drink.
And just like that, it appeared. A goblet. Right in front of him, between his open legs. Hermione stared at the glass, then at him, then back at the glass. He was just as surprised as she was.
Slowly, he reached out and ran his finger over the cup. It was real. Solid. He then picked it up and took a whiff.
“Pumpkin juice.”
That was all he needed to know. He was overwhelmed with the urge to drink it down. And he was so thirsty. He raised the goblet to his lips.
“Wait! What are you doing?” Hermione stared at him incredulously.
“What does it look like I’m doing? I’m thirsty so I am going to take a drink.” He said it like he was explaining it to a two year old.
“But it could be poison. It just appeared out of no where, for no reason!” She couldn’t understand why he wasn’t realizing these things. They woke up in a random room with no memory of how they got there and then a glass of pumpkin juice appears and he goes to drink it?
He really was mad.
“Its not poison. There isn’t anything wrong with it.”
“How can you be sure? You just smelled it.”
“Because, I just know. And besides, I really don’t care. I need something to drink.” And so he drank. He gulped down the juice in one swift movement.
And it was good. Amazingly good. Better than any pumpkin juice he’d ever had before. It was probably just because he was so dehydrated. He watched Granger with an amused expression as she looked at him, almost waiting for him to keel over any second. He debated indulging in her fears and pretending like he was in extreme pain, just to mess with her head, but he decided seeing the crestfallen look on her face when she found out that he was right and she was wrong, was much more enjoyable.
“See? Not poison. I’m fine.”
She seemed to believe him and sighed. Half of her was glad that it was fine. The other half of her wished that it really had been poison.
“That was amazing.” He stared at the glass as he smacked his lips together, getting the last remnants of the juice off of his mouth. Even though he’d knocked back the entire goblet, he still felt as thirsty as ever. He wanted more.
And more he got.
Another goblet appeared in front of him where the first had. A smile broke across his face as he lunged for the drink.
Hermione watched him devour the juice with interest as she unconsciously swallowed. It hadn’t occurred to her until just then how thirsty she was too. And with a single wish for her own goblet of pumpkin juice, it appeared by her side.
Her eyes widened in recognition. It was all so familiar. She knew this room. And he did too. It was the room that gave you whatever you wanted. Whatever you needed.
“Malfoy, this is the Room of Requirement!” She eyed her cup again, more excitedly this time. Draco stared at her, his brows furrowed for a moment. The Room of Requirement? He knew it well. He practically spent every waking moment in it the previous year. But he’d never seen it like this. Just so plain. Perhaps it was because they hadn’t wanted or needed anything yet except something to drink.
That of course didn’t explain the table and chairs but he wasn’t thinking of those now.
To test the theory, Draco stood up and circled around the room. If it was the actual Room of Requirement, then he could ask it for something and it would appear.
Well, what he really wanted was something to eat and his stomach growled in agreement.
In a second, the long white table was filled with food, a feast spread out for them. Hermione stood immediately, her eyes big and her mouth watering. She’d already gulped down her pumpkin juice the moment she realized where they were. Now she felt famished.
And she felt safe. Because this was a room inside of Hogwarts and it was okay for her to feel that way.
They both rushed over to the table and set themselves in the chairs in the middle, right across from one another.
They ate like they hadn’t been fed in weeks. But neither really found it suspicious. They simply attributed it to the fact that they hadn’t had dinner before their detention, both too peeved to bother with eating.
When one of them grabbed a bread roll, ten more appeared. The food refilled itself instantly, practically overflowing the table. It was heaven to Hermione and Draco. And the more they ate, the hungrier they got.
Hermione devoured the banquet with her eyes. Turkey and ham and potatoes and salads, pastas, breads, cakes and deserts, gravies and dressings.
She wanted it all.
Draco continued to shove more and more food into his mouth, not really even tasting it. When he wanted something to wash it down with, carafes full of a variety of drinks appeared. Anything he could think of to eat or drink materialized onto the table.
The food tasted better than anything they’d ever had before. Draco figured the House-Elves could take a lesson from whoever had made it. Of course that didn’t make sense, considering if they were inside of Hogwarts, then the house-elves did make it. But those thoughts hadn’t exactly registered in the rational part of his brain.
Nothing was really registering in the rational part of his brain.
Many, many minutes past, and still, the two continued to stuff their faces. Food was flying everywhere, getting on their clothes, in their hair. Neither seemed to notice. They were both totally preoccupied with the food surrounding them. More. More.
More.
Hermione had never eaten so much in her life. In fact, she’d never seen anyone eat so much.
And that was when she realized that something was off.
She didn’t eat like this ever. Hermione had always been very moderate in her eating, enjoying the treats as well as the healthy things. She never engorged herself like Ron and Harry seemed to. And yet she was now. She was eating plates and plates of food.
And she wasn’t yet full. Not even close.
In fact, she’d even go as far to say that she was even more hungry then when she started.
Setting down the chicken leg that was in her hand, Hermione took another look around the naked room. If it really was the Room of Requirement, she could ask for something and it would appear. Something else besides food.
She wished for a fireplace.
Nothing happened.
Again, she wished. Tried harder. Put all of her will into asking the room for it.
And still, nothing happened.
Hermione wasn’t stupid. Far, far from it. And it soon occurred to her that this was not the Room of Requirement. Not the one in Hogwarts, at least. Instead, she had a feeling that it was some sort of trap. Something to keep them shut in. And the food was a distraction. It was the room that was making them want to keep eating despite the fact that they should have been full.
It made sense. Because one minute they were in the forest, and the next, they were inside of this room.
Definitely a trap.
Her attention turned back to Draco, who was wildly tearing at the meats in front of him.
If he didn’t stop, he’d end up killing himself. Loading himself with so much food that he would simply burst. She had a sneaking suspicion that just because they still felt hungry, didn’t mean that they weren’t filling up their stomachs.
“Malfoy, stop.” He didn’t seem to hear her. That or he wasn’t listening. He was far too consumed with his eating.
She didn’t waste a moment before climbing over the table, knocking some of the food to the ground as she went.
“Malfoy, we have to stop. It’s a trap!” When she was right in front of him she put her hands on his face and forced him to look at her. Food was hand from his mouth, grease was smeared on his cheeks, and she could swear that he was drooling.
He let out a growl of frustration and tried to reach around her for more food.
She was knocked back onto the table and he scrambled on top of her. He instantly reached for the loaf of bread by her elbow and slammed the end of it into his mouth, chomping ferociously.
She knew she had to get him to stop, but she wasn’t exactly sure how.
Especially with him on top of her, pinning her to the table.
Out of instinct, she raised her hands to his chest and pushed with all her might. It worked, he was too focused on the food to defend himself. He fell backward, off of the table and onto the floor. The bread was knocked out of his hand and as soon as he tried to scramble to get it, Hermione flung herself onto him, holding him down with her weight.
“Malfoy! That is enough. You have to stop eating. It’s all a trap.” He stared at her for a moment with glazed eyes. “It’s a trap!” She urged again.
He seemed to snap out of it then.
“What?” His voice was muffled because of the already chewed food still in the back of his throat.
“This isn’t the Room of Requirement. It is a fake. And this food is just here to distract us. See how much you’ve eaten? And do you feel even a little bit full?”
He pondered it for a moment before shaking his head. Hermione rolled off him and right away he turned over to spit out the gunk that was let in his mouth.
“We have to stop eating and figure a way out of here. I tried wishing for a fireplace to floo or for a door to escape but nothing happened.” They were on their feet now, each frantically looking around. Draco then turned to her.
“I still feel hungry. I want more.” His eyes were wide in confusion, desperation. She understood what he was saying because she felt it too. The aching in her stomach, the screaming in her brain telling her to grab something and swallow it whole. But she was a logical person and she knew that the insatiable urges she was getting were completely irrational.
“I know but we can’t eat more. We have to-” Her voice broke when something over Malfoy’s shoulder caught her eye. They both turned to look. More food was appearing. But not just any food. Grilled fish, cheese toast, ice cream, and…apple pie.
Hermione loved apple pie. It was her favorite.
Her mouth started to water once again. It was so close. Just a few feet away. The tantalizing smells wafted over to her and she inhaled deeply. It smelled like it had just come out of the oven. She didn’t even realize that she had taken a step closer. All she could think about was how deliciously sweet the warm, golden pie would taste on her tongue.
She snapped out of it when she felt something bump her shoulder and with a shake of her head she was alert once more. But that brief second she’d given in, Draco had as well and he was already heading back to the table, right for the fish.
She lunged at him, grabbing the back of his robes and yanking as hard as she could.
He stumbled backward into her arms but pushed himself away as soon as he understood what he had been doing.
“Okay, we have to get out of here. Now.” He was almost frantic and wasn’t sure how long he could take being surrounded by all the foods, all the smells. It was just too appetizing. He had to put his hand over his mouth to stop himself from drooling everywhere.
More of their favorites started to appear. The table wasn’t big enough and the food started to topple to the ground.
She had no idea what to do. None. And that scared her because she always had an idea. Her mind was always running, thinking of solutions before she even knew what the problem was.
This had no solution, obvious or otherwise.
Out of pure frustration and panic, she grabbed the closest thing, a plate of oatmeal cookies, and threw it against the wall. It shattered, glass and cookies falling to the ground in pieces.
And she felt better.
It struck her then. That was the key.
“We have to destroy it Malfoy.”
And that was all that needed to be said. They both moved forward, grabbing anything in their path and throwing it to the ground. Draco got to the table and, in one quick movement, swiped piles of food onto the floor. Hermione did the same, tossing everything over her shoulder as she made her way down the length of the feast.
Draco, in his haste, stuck his hand right into the warm apple pie and threw the mush onto the ceiling, where it stuck for a moment before dripping down into a clump on the floor.
They weren’t even sure what they were doing, or if it would even work, but they had to try. Because, they just knew, the room would keep filling up and the longer they stayed, the harder it would be for them to resist it.
“I won’t. I WON’T!”
As soon as the words left Draco’s mouth, he felt incredibly dizzy. His sight grew blurry and he couldn’t tell if it was the room that was spinning, or himself.
He gripped the table but it was almost as if all the strength had gone out of him. Then he felt like he was being pulled upward, through the ceiling and into the sky.
His last thought was that he was out.

The sun rose into the sky, casting a warm, radiant gleam on the dewy grass. The light poured over the grounds…the lake…the castle. Morning had come to Hogwarts once again.
Students started to wake from their dreams. Leave their beds.
It would be hours before anyone realized that two of them were missing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next time: What happened to Draco? Are they finally back home? No, of course not! Sin number two…sloth.
AN: This was one of the hardest chapters of the entire fic for me to write. When I started on this fic, I thought long and hard about how each of them would react to the different sins and this was by far the most difficult. Probably because it doesn’t really apply. Gluttony is excessive eating and drinking. I couldn’t really manipulate that to fit Draco and Hermione’s personalities lol! So I hope this worked fine.
AN 2: And just a note on the time frame. I tried to be specific and vague all at once. By the time they leave sin number one, it is morning in the real world. That seems right to me considering they were in the forest for a long time and probably in the room for a while as well. But each sin will take longer and longer to get out so…yeah. Just a time explanation. It does work about the same as the real world, it just might not seem like it.
