As the day wore on, Dumbledore found out that word traveled fast. Witches and wizards all over Britain were lining the streets and celebrating the fall of Voldemort. Only those who knew James and Lily were more preoccupied with mourning their loss. He and Sirius were the only ones that knew James was really lying in a hospital bed clinging to life by a thin thread.
The white haired wizard couldn’t help but shake his head and let out a little chuckle. If there was anyone on earth that was too stubborn to die it was James. But he also knew that no one could know about this. If the wizarding world ever knew that a full-grown wizard ever survived an attack by Voldemort… Well, the poor man wouldn’t get any peace to mourn his wife.
There was also the question of what was going to happen to Harry? The one year old baby was probably the most famous person alive at the moment. It wouldn’t be fair to make him grow up as a celebrity. A child needed to be a child.
Dumbledore found himself thinking about James’ childhood. There had been quite a bit of hype surrounding the unmarried headmaster adopting the child that made the Ministry nervous. James grew up mildly famous, and the fame took its toll. And that fame was nothing compared to what Harry was facing. No, Dumbledore couldn’t let him be exposed to that until he was ready.
Should he send Harry away with James? That really didn’t seem like a good idea either. His adopted son was unstable on good days. He loved James dearly, but didn’t think it was in Harry’s best interest to be raised by his father. There really was no telling what kind of mental state James would be in when he woke.
Up until he saw the Daily Prophet, he was planning on giving Harry to Sirius just because the man was Harry’s godfather, but that no longer seemed an option. It seemed that Sirius had hunted down and murdered Peter Pettigrew, and he wasn’t surprised. He was surprised however about the rumors that Sirius was really a Voldemort supporter who betrayed his best friend. Anyone who could believe that certainly didn’t know Sirius very well.
That only left Dumbledore with one option; Lily’s older sister Petunia. She probably wasn’t the best choice in the world, but Dumbledore was confident that she would take her nephew in. He knew something that she probably wouldn’t want her husband to know. All that was left to do now was come up with a reason to tell people about why he decided to give Harry to Petunia and Vernon Dursley.

Lucius sat at the dining room table for breakfast just as he did every morning. But something felt different about that morning. As soon as he opened his eyes Lucius sensed that something wasn’t right.
As he picked up the paper to read it all the color drained from his face. “Is something wrong dear?” Narcissa asked.
“N- nothing,” the blond stuttered. “I just think that the Prophet shouldn’t let their writers report lies,” he said as he threw the paper down and continued on with his breakfast. Such a thing couldn’t possibly be true. The man had just been sitting with him at that very table only days before, having an oatmeal fight. No, he couldn’t be dead.
Lucius was unusually quiet the rest of the morning. He felt like not talking about it would make it not true. Severus came over a little before lunch. The tall blond wizard desperately looked to his friend to tell him that it was all a lie, but as the potions teacher stepped inside with that sullen look…
“Dumbledore has been busy all morning making arrangements,” Severus spoke softly.
Lucius fell against the wall and slid to the floor, his face twisted in pain. Severus rushed to help his friend up and walked him over to a couch. “Shhh… It will be all right,” he tried to comfort him.
“How could he do this to me!” Lucius suddenly screamed out, hot tears sliding down his cheeks. “He promised me!”
“I know,” the dark haired wizard said as he put his arm around him. “I know.”
“He was just here,” Lucius sniffed, leaning against his friend for emotional support. “I had him to myself for two whole days. And…”
Lucius suddenly got up and ran off to his bedroom. Severus thought he was loosing it until he came back carrying a hairbrush. “He forgot his hairbrush,” Lucius stated, sitting back down. “He can’t just up and die when he forgets his hairbrush at someone’s house.”
Lucius just sat quietly and stared down at the hairbrush in his hand that was full of long raven hairs. He kept replaying the entire weekend over and over in his head. Then suddenly an awful thought dawned on him. “He knew it was going to happen, didn’t he? James knew what was going to happen all along, and he purposefully left me his hair…”
