Chapter 1
A New Life
A/N: Thanks for all the reviews! They inspire me to write more! This was just an experiment that I wanted to do, something different then Harry just getting a Death Note or Harry siding with L. I think I’ll mix this with both the Anime show and the manga. Maybe Harry can prevent Raito from going crazy with power? By the way I forgot to mention that while Raito will be Harry’s best friend while he’s in the muggle world Ron and Hermione are still his best friends from the wizarding world.

Chapter 1 The Death Note
“Why did you bother taking it?” Raito asked Harry as they walked home together.
Harry turned to him surprised. “What?” he asked.
“The notebook.” Raito narrowed his eyes at him. “Don’t think I didn’t see you taking the notebook Hiroshi.”
Harry shrugged before looking away. “I don’t know why. Even if it turns out to be a hoax it was still a perfectly good notebook. Why waste it?”
He didn’t tell Raito about the bad feeling that he got from the notebook or the feeling that the notebook should not belong in the hands of a human.
Raito studied him to see if he was being truthful or not before shrugging. Why did he care if Hiroshi decided to keep the notebook? It didn’t matter to him. Still the words in the notebook kept repeating itself in his mind.
The human whose name is written in this notebook shall die.
‘It couldn’t be real. It has to be a hoax.’ Raito thought.
The Yagami house came into view and they walked up the steps, opening the door.
“We’re home!” Harry called as they removed their shoes by the door.
“Welcome home!” Sachiko called as she came to greet them with a smile on her face. “How was school today?”
Harry smiled at the kind woman who had taken him their house with welcomed arms and treated him as if he was another son to her. She reminded him of Molly.
“The usual, boring.”
“We have homework to do, so don’t bother us okay?” Raito said.
Harry frowned at him. He didn’t have to be so rude to his own mother.
“Okay dear,” said Sachiko, not upset at all from her son’s behavior and quit use to it.
After all, her son took his schooling very seriously and she was proud of him. Now if only Sayu had the same attitude about her studies.
“You didn’t have to be rude to her you know.” Harry said as they walked up the stairs.
Raito didn’t answer and instead walked into his room, closing the door on his way in. Harry shrugged before heading to his own room, which was the room across from Raito’s. Harry’s room looked like a normal bedroom and was a pretty decent sized room much larger then the room he had at the Dursleys, with a queen sized bed, dresser, bookcase, a computer and TV, and desk. He had a few pictures of his friends and parents in the room that were spelled to be still and not move. His room looked normal and held nothing that was magical in it. No one in the Yagami family knew that he was a wizard and could do magic and he was going to keep it that way.
Raito would be doing his homework so Harry might as well get his done so he didn’t have to worry about it and do it at the last moment like Ron would have done. Honestly if it wasn’t for Hermione he and Ron would have failed their classes and flunked out. He took his studies more seriously now.
Just as he was about to start on his homework there was a knock on his door.
“Come in!” he called sighing, knowing that he wasn’t going to get any work done.
The door opened and Sayu came bouncing into his room with her math book. Sayu was Raito’s younger sister and was also like a younger sister to Harry.
“Hey Hiroshi!” she chirped cheerfully.
Harry just sighed, rolling his eyes.
“Do you need help with your math again Sayu?” he asked.
Sayu often came to him asking for help on her homework if she was stuck on something. She usually went to Raito asking for help because Raito was her older brother and liked him helping her with it but when Raito was too busy he would send her to Harry instead to help her. Harry honestly didn’t mind helping the girl with her homework. He imagined this is how it would be if his parents had lived and he had a younger sister or brother.
She looked sheepish. “Please? I asked Raito but he said he was busy with his own homework and told me to ask you.”
“All right, what do you need help with?” he asked.
“Everything?”
He sighed.
OoOo
An hour or two later Harry had helped Sayu through her homework and it was finally done.
“Thanks Hiroshi! You’re a life savor!” Sayu said happily now that she got her math work done.
Math was her worst subject and she hated it. She always needed help with it and some times she just didn’t seem to get it. At least she had her big brother and Hiroshi to help her with it. She’d be lost if she didn’t.
“You’re welcome Sayu, now I need to start on my homework.” Said Harry.
“Okay, thanks for helping me!” she said gathering up her homework before she bounced out of the room.
Harry shook his head with a smile and started on his own homework. He was half way through it when there came another knock on his door. He sighed- why can’t any one let him do his homework?
“Come in!”
The door opened and Harry was surprised to see Raito come in. Usually it’s Harry who goes to Raito.
“Did you help Sayu with her homework?” Raito asked as he closed the door behind him.
“Yea, since you were too busy to help her with it.” Said Harry.
“She needs to learn how to do things on her own.” Said Raito coolly.
“I don’t mind helping her. Was there something you needed? I still have some homework to finish and would like to get it done eventually before we go to cram school.”
“I wanted to talk to you.”
Harry looked at him curiously. “About?”
“The Death Note, I’m curious about it.” Raito said.
Harry blinked. “To tell you the truth I have forgotten about it. It’s still in my book bag. Why would you be curious about it? You said it was just a hoax.”
“Even if it is a hoax I still want to take a closer look at it. Can you take it out of your book bag?”
Harry eyed him, wondering why Raito was still interested in the notebook before he shrugged.
“Sure, whatever. I’m also curious about it.”
He pulled the black notebook out of his book bag and Raito eyed it curiously. Harry also looked at it curiously. Both of them felt drawn to the notebook. It called to them, drawing them to it. Harry felt a bit uneasy about it, wondering why such a simple notebook seemed to have a pull over them. It reminded him too much of Tom Riddle’s diary for his comfort. It had the same strong pull to it.
Raito took the notebook from him and opened it to read the rules out loud to him.
“The human whose name is written in this note shall die.”
“This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person’s face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.”
“If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person’s name, it will happen.”
“If the cause of death is note specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.”
“After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.”
Harry scratched the back of his head. “So the notebook can make you either die peacefully or painfully?” He asked.
Raito closed the notebook.
“It would seem like it, that is if you believe it. Someone really put a lot of thought into making this prank.”
Harry looked at Raito seriously. “But Raito, what if it isn’t a prank?”
“Come on Hiroshi, a notebook with the power to kill?” Raito asked skeptically as he laid down on Harry’s bed with his hands behind his head.
‘It’s not as far stretched as you may believe Raito.’ Harry thought.
After all, he’s come across a diary that can possess you and suck the life out of you. So it’s not that hard to believe that there is a notebook that can kill you.
Raito stared up at the ceiling as he thought about the notebook. He couldn’t seem to stop thinking about it.
‘A notebook that can kill? I can kill someone either slowly or painfully.’
Raito suddenly sat up and quickly grabbed the notebook and a pen, opening it and positioning the pen to the blank page of paper. Harry panicked for a minute.
“Raito, what are you doing?” he asked, surely Raito isn’t going to test it is he?!
“If I wrote down someone’s name and they actually died. Would that make me a murderer?” Raito asked with a strange glint in his eyes.
Harry eyed him warily. Raito looked like he really wanted to test it.
“You’re not going to actually going to test it are you?”
“Would it?” Raito asked ignoring him.
“If the person dies after you wrote their name down then that would mean that yes you killed them so yes that would make you a murderer. So just don’t try it.”
Raito still looked like he wanted to try out the Death Note but instead turned on the TV. On the TV there was what looked like a hostage situation at a day care. Harry and Raito watched the screen, the situation looked bad. There was no way to get inside the building to get the hostages out without risking the hostages’ lives. What was worst was that the hostages’ were children and school teachers’.
“I hope they solve the solution soon.” Harry said.
Raito’s eyes hardened. The culprit appeared on the news and his name was Otoharada Kurou and along with the name came a picture of an ugly middle- aged man. He smirked when Raito realized that this would be the perfect chance to test the Death Note. He glanced at Harry who seemed glued to the TV before turning to the Death Note. He wrote Otoharada Kurou’s name down into the Death Note and waited.
“40 seconds huh? Well we’ll see.” Raito said, crossing his arms over his chest.
Harry turned to him with wide eyes. “Raito, what did you do?” he asked before noticing the name written in the Death Note. “You actually wrote his name down?!”
“Relax Hiroshi. It probably won’t work any way.” Raito said calmly, confident that the notebook won’t work.
Harry gaped at him in shock. He actually wrote his name down?! He actually wrote a person’s name down into a notebook that might actually have the power to kill?
“I can’t believe you did that!”
“Just relax, nothing will happen.” Said Raito.
The seconds passed by slowly until 40 seconds has passed.
“40 seconds has passed. Times up. I knew it. See Hiroshi, nothing happened. You can relax now.”
Harry sighed in relief, nothing happened. Raito was about to turn the TV off before something happened on the screen. The hostages suddenly came running out of the building and Harry and Raito gaped in shock, eyes wide.
“It seems that Otoharda is dead!” it was announced.
“Dead?!” Harry said in shock.
“No… that’s just a coincidence.” Raito stammered out.
“That’s not a coincidence Raito! You wrote that man’s name down into the Death Note and he died 40 seconds later! Just like the notebook said! You killed him!”
Raito was still in shock. He killed a man. It didn’t matter if the man was a criminal or not he still took a human’s life. He felt sick.
“Raito, Hiroshi! It’s 6:25! Don’t forget that you have cram school to go to!” Sachiko’s voice called, making them jump and snap out of their shock.
They were surprised that no one had come up with all the noise they were making.
“We were just getting ready to leave!” Raito called.
“What are we going to do?” Harry asked as he got ready for their cram school.
“Nothing,” said Raito.
“Nothing? Raito, a man is dead!” Harry said.
“But no one will be able to pin point his death to me if you keep quiet about it! It will look like he died of a heart attack. There’s no way they can pin it on me.”
“At least this proves that the Death Note really does work.” Harry said as he grabbed the notebook from Raito’s hands.
“Hiroshi!”
“I’ll be keeping this from now on in case you get any more bright ideas to try it out again.” He said slipping the notebook into his book bag.
Raito looked annoyed for a second before schooling his face blank. They got ready to leave for their cram school.
“We’re leaving!” Harry called as he and Raito headed for the door.
Raito’s eyes remained on Harry’s book bag where the Death Note was inside. He wanted to test the Death Note again to be sure. It had to be a coincidence that he died. But how would he be able to test it if Hiroshi had it?
