The faint, barely audible rapping on the door startled him.
Nobody came to see him since the war\'s end.
He had never expected people to beat a path to his door, and sure enough, nobody came to say thank you, to threaten him, to apologize, or to curse him out to his face. At the end of the day, people didn\'t know what to do with someone like him.
He wasn\'t surprised.
Simply put, Severus Snape expected to be forgotten and left alone, and people obliged him.
But now, the hasty, alarmed sound seemed to indicate that someone remembered him.
Maybe it was McGonagall, wanting to apologize.
Maybe it was a former Death Eater, resolved to kill him.
Maybe it was Narcissa, wanting to thank him.
Maybe it was Harry Potter, itching to pick a fight.
Either way, it felt good to be remembered.
His wand in his hand, he walked to the door to open it.
His doorstep was empty. The night sky was thick with stormy clouds. A new gush of wind struck against the door.
Of course, he thought. At the end of the day, only the wind remembered him.
Maybe that was enough.
