“Thud.
“What the-?!”
Harry Potter of number four, Privet Drive stared in shock at the body that had formed from the shower of glitter that had started to fall from the ceiling. Unfortunately for the body in question it had formed a mere foot from the ceiling and so fell several feet before colliding with his bedroom floor. Already he could hear the thunderous footsteps of his uncle racing up the stairs to investigate what was happening in here. The boy, as he could now make out, rolled to his feet and had his wand drawn and leveled at him faster than he could blink.
His eyes traced over the face of the boy in front of him in confusion. The boy looked just like Harry himself. The hair was different. Instead of a messy mop of hair the black strands fell in soft spikes around a face without glasses. But the eyes were a familiar green and the lines of his pale face... Harry studied his face more closely. Something was off. And that’s when it hit him. There was no lightening shaped scar on his forehead. He boy looked every bit as flabbergasted as Harry himself felt when he took in Harry where he was pressed with his back against the wall beside his tiny bed.
“You- who are you?” Harry demanded nervously.
“Banished back to whence I came,” Harry’s look alike muttered in a disbelieving voice. Before Harry could open his mouth to ask what that meant Uncle Vernon charged through the door. Immediately the wand, Harry’s wand, was retrained on the heavy man filling the doorway. It took a second for Vernon to process what he was seeing, but as soon as he did his face began turning an unhealthy shade of reddish purple.
“Two of you? One in my house is more than enough! I won’t have it! Get out! Out!”
“You really should calm down there Vernon. Bursting arteries around a vampire is a bad idea,” the other Harry announced before flashing a wicked set of fangs. Vernon paled and let out an embarrassing squeaking sound. He quickly backed pedaled out of the room and slammed the door closed. The sound of several locks sliding home in quick succession could be heard in the sudden silence.
“He’s probably going to send Petunia and Dudley to the store for garlic and start nailing cross to the door,” the other Harry, the vampire, muttered with a roll of his eyes. He turned back towards Harry who was staring back and forth between him and the sunshine falling through the window in confusion.
“Age and potions will eliminate dangers from sunlight, in case you’re wondering. Now… When am I?” the vampire demanded.
“What?” Harry asked, confused.
“What day is it what, year is it? I just need something to figure out when I am.”
“It’s July 31, 1996.”
Then he noticed the pinion on the wall next to the human Harry’s head. “You were in Gryffindor?”
“Am in Gryffindor, actually.” The whole situation was too weird, even by Harry’s standards for him to take offense at the stranger’s tone.
“Do you like it?” he asked curiously.
“What? Yes of course I like my house. And of the two of us I think I’m the one who deserves the right to ask questions!” Harry snapped. The vampire didn’t seem to be listening. He was staring through the bars of the window out to the street below.
“Huh. The circle was broken near the end. So… close, but not exactly... That must be it.” ‘I will need this boy’s help. He’s me, and he’s the one I need to win over to get help,’ the other Harry realized.
Harry stared at the self proclaimed vampire who bore a suspicious resemblance to himself and who he was beginning to suspect was quite crazy. Harry wondered if this was some sort of Death Eater plot to capture him and take him to Voldemort, but doubted it. Wizards, and hopefully dark creatures, with harmful intent weren’t supposed to be able to pass the wards. That, and normal Death Eater plots were more complicated, and were at least straightforward enough not to be questionable at a glance. Still he refused to relax his guard around the other boy.
“D’you mind my asking who you are, where you came from, and what you’re doing in my bedroom?” ‘And why aren’t any of the members of the Order coming to check out what’s going on?’ He wondered silently.
Green eyes narrowed in thought as they regarded him and the pale man dropped his defensive stance with a careless roll of his shoulders. His arm moved and suddenly his wand was no longer in sight. “I am Harry Potter as you are Harry Potter. But you are of this world, as I am not.”
“You’re going to have to do better than that, because I still don’t know what you’re talking about,” Harry informed him coolly.
“I was banished from my world, and somehow the spell must have sent me here. It had to have. There’s no other explanation.”
“If you’re me then how did you manage to get banished? Most people, well I’m not going to say they like me, but typically they want to keep me around for their own convenience if nothing else. What did you do?!”
“I was a weapon in the war against Voldemort, and the Wizarding Ministry demanded that I pay the price of my forging,” the other Harry gave a self-mocking smile, one that didn’t reveal his teeth.
“What does that mean?” Harry asked.
“I’m assuming that since you are living with the muggles that you’re here for the blood protection? Like your self I was raised to believe that I was going to have to save the Wizarding world from the evils of Voldemort. But when I went to Hogwarts I was sorted into the Slytherin House. Aside from some of the Slytherins, none of the other students liked me. The teachers didn’t trust me. Not even my head of House cared for me.”
“Snape is a greasy bastard,” Harry sympathized.
“He and I eventually come to an understanding. It was everyone else who became a problem. Unfortunately they all still expected that I save them by defeating Voldemort, and this left me being his primary target during the war. No one who was willing to fight Voldemort was willing teach me. This left me facing down Voldemort without any help far too many times. So I helped myself.”
Harry tried to sort out what the other Harry meant by that.“Wait, are you saying you became a vampire to defeat Voldemort?”
“I had to Harry. Eventually, and quite by accident might I add, I found out that he was keeping himself alive with a dark type of magic. Voldemort was embedding items with pieces of his soul. No matter how many times he regained his body, no matter how many times I killed him he could come back so long as there was a horcrux.”
“A horcrux? That’s what they’re called, these soul pieces?” Harry pushed away from the wall and cautiously sat on his bed so he could face the other Harry. The other Harry gestured toward the bed to ask if he could sit down too, and Harry nodded.
“Yes. When he uses magic to kill he tears his soul and embeds half into an item. He had already made several by the time he had killed our parents. And then I discovered that I was one of these horcruxes as well.” The vampire raised his hand to feel the lightening bolt scar that he hid beneath a combination of a potion based cosmetic and glamour.
“You were…?” Harry raised his hand to feel the matching red scar on his forehead.
“Yes. That night in Godric’s Hollow his curse rebounded but he had managed to use my mother’s death to leave a piece of himself behind, inside me. You’re one too, I’d wager.”
Harry stood up abruptly; palm still pressed over the scar on his head, and began to pace frantically back and forth in the small space.
“No, no, no, no. This can’t be right. I’m not, he’s not inside me. He’s not… But if I’m alive then that means everyone else is in danger. Then that means, I’m supposed to die. What if I’m only staying alive because he’s keeping me alive so he can steal my body? I shoul- Ow!”
Whatever it was he should be doing was cut short as a soft leather boot hooked on one of his ankles and sent him sprawling to the floor.
“What’d you do that for?” a red faced Harry demanded as soon as he regained his feet.
“Because you were getting too worked up, and frankly we were focusing on my angst not yours. Have a sit while I finish. And then, if you feel you must, you can freak out.”
Harry sat back down against the headboard, rubbing his bruising ankle and glaring at the vampire.
“Now where was I? Ah yes- the horcruxes. I had managed to kill him once by my fifth year, but I didn’t know the first thing about how to figure out where the other horcruxes were. They could be anything. To this day I still don’t know what they all were. But my friends and I decided that no matter how many he had made so far there couldn’t be that many more he could make after that. I mean, how many times can you really shred your soul before there’s nothing left?
So I went to a local nest of vampires in the Forbidden Forest and asked their leader to turn me. It killed my body, which served to destroy the horcrux inside me, and then it kept me alive so I could keep destroying Voldemort as he regained his body, or took possession of others through contact with his soul shards. That was the reason I asked to be turned. I could be there always to guard against his return.”
“So you gave up your life just to devote yourself to killing Voldemort?” Harry asked. He reached behind himself to grab his pillow and pull it in front of himself to wrap his arms around while he listened.
“It was a good thing I did. It took nearly a century to kill all of the known soul fragments he had created. The only problem with becoming a vampire is after the job is done you’re still around.”
“I don’t get it. You were still protecting everyone from Voldemort. Why did the Ministry banish you?”
Vampire Harry gave an aggravated look, “Because they’re idiots.” ‘And because there’s the last horcrux that we never found and one of Voldemort’s supporters was likely trying to get rid of me.’
“Well yeah I guess I can see that. But what did you do then? I mean, it’s taken fifteen years for Voldemort to make his big come back. You must have done something to occupy yourself with between his attempts to come back and wreak havoc.”
“After that, I just… lived. I traveled, I studied. I learned all those little things that I never had a chance to as a child. I even became surprisingly good at Potions once I didn’t actually have to learn them for class. There was all this wonderful magic and technology. It was amazing Harry. Muggles made some of the most incredible advancements, ones even the Wizarding World had to sit up and take notice.”
“Like what?” Harry leaned forward, green eyes wide behind the lenses of his glasses. Vampire Harry grinned at his human counterpart’s enthusiasm. He was too caught up in the story to worry about feeling threatened. That was a relief for the vampire because he was only willing to trust himself to get help to get back to his proper world.
“Well the most incredible thing was the space occupation program. They eventually were able to create news worlds and then whole societies started relocating to their own planets. The Wizarding World actually decided that it would be a wonderful idea to use the muggles to make the Wizarding World just that; a world separate from the muggles.”
“Space? They made new worlds?” Harry demanded. “When did that happen?”
“That was around the year 2221 A.D.”
“2221 A.D. - Just how old are you?!” he gaped at the vampire across from him.
“Six hundred and seventeen years old,” Vampire Harry shifted around so his feet were hanging off the side of the bed and he was sprawled across the end of the bed. There was no backrest for him at the foot of the bed and he was way too lazy to keep sitting upright for too long without a place to lean if he didn’t have to. He glanced over to see Harry working calculations with his fingers, a pink tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth as he worked out the math.
Harry goggled at him as he came up with the answer. “Then that means you came here from the year 2615!”
“I came here from another dimension, and the year was 394 A.S. if we’re being strictly technical. I told you the space thing was kind of a big deal so the year system started over with the After Space, calendar system.”
“394 A.S. Riiight. But I mean, I still don’t get why you ended up here,” Harry shook his head and pointed to the ground to make his point.
Vampire Harry laced his hands behind his head and looked up at the ceiling. “Just how much contact have you had with the Ministry?”
“More than I’ve ever cared to,” the boy answered tartly.
“Then you’re familiar with all the in fights and politics that go on. It’s the same way where I came from. Now when the Wizarding World made Arya, they weren’t really planning on all the magical races being brought with them, only the quote, acceptable ones, unquote.” He even made the bunny rabbit quotes in the air when he was mocking the idea of acceptable magical creatures. “Well some of the less desirable species managed to get brought along. Some snuck in, some were smuggled, others, like myself strolled through with the humans because they had no way of identifying me. There’s actually a huge black market for exotic pets and illegal potions ingredients, magical animal skin clothes.”
“That’s gross.”
Vampire Harry just made an agreeing noise in his throat before picking up the thread of his story. “Now the Minister of Magic on Arya likes to consider himself something of a purist. He’s organized teams of Aurors to hunt down the less desirable elements. Most of them are executed. I can’t be killed with any of the acceptable forms of magic. They sealed a lot of the more forbidden stuff, so practically no one on Arya even knows how to cast the killing curse. Anyway, somehow it got out that I was a vampire and they started hunting me. They cornered me and they cast a banishment circle around me.”
“I’ve never heard of a banishment circle. What’s that do?”
“It banishes demons back to whence they came. Typically, that means Hell. Since I didn’t want to risk ending up in Hell I fought against the circle. I guess since I’m not a demon the spell tried to cast me back to Privet Drive. Since some of my magic broke through I guess that messed up the spell.”
“And now you’re here instead of wherever they were trying to send you.”
“Exactly. And now I need to get back to my world so I can stop the Ministry.”
“So… what do you plan to do?” Harry asked him.
“Why I’m planning on having you help me research how to get back home. And in the meantime, I’m going to train you on how to take on Voldemort. And get you a fashion upgrade, since we won’t be able to pretend to be each other if we don’t look exactly alike.”
“Pretend to be each other? Can you imagine the stuff the two of us could get away with? Can you imagine Snape’s face if you went to his class for me and aced it this year?”
The two of them stare at each other in silence for a moment before identical smirks spread across their faces.
“Happy Birthday, Harry.”
