Chapter Two: Discovery
"Hogwarts was supposed to safe!" Molly cried, face pale and drawn. "How could Death Eaters get into Hogwarts?"
Currently, the remaining Weasleys and Albus Dumbledore were sitting in the Headmaster's office, all of them weary and exhausted after the events of the past day, the consequences slowly becoming realized.
Death Eaters, led by Bellatrix Lestrange and Draco Malfoy, had entered through the Room of Requirement for the sole purpose to kill Dumbledore and throw magical England into chaos. They had succeeded in one but failed in the other. During the battle, Severus Snape had been revealed as a traitor when he had saved Ernie Macmillan from Antonin Dolohov; the action had almost cost the Potions Master his life when Rodolphus has sneaked up from behind to finish him off. Only the fortuitous rescue staged by Neville and Hannah had saved Snape from a gruesome death.
Dumbledore and Harry had arrived from their Horcrux hunt and landed in the Astronomy Tower where they had been ambushed by Draco Malfoy who had been waiting there for them. Draco had succeeded in Disarming Dumbledore and had taken his wand when the old wizard's back was turned but Harry, refusing to let another friend die, had engaged him, throwing him to the other side and taking his wand and Dumbledore's into his possession. The Death Eaters arrived just as Harry gave the Headmaster's wand back.
Back to back, Albus and Harry had driven the Death Eaters back to the Entrance Hall, being helped by the Aurors and Order members that had been alerted by the Hogwarts students that had taken up arms to defend their school. The battle had been more intense than anything Harry had ever been through, including the running fight in the Ministry the year before. Curses and hexes were flying overhead, the solid stone walls of the school erupting around him.
In the middle of it all, Harry had not seen the Blasting Hex that had landed between him and Ginny who was fighting at his side, her red hair whipping around her face. The blast had torn through the corridor, knocking Harry and Ginny unconscious. In the ensuing confusion, Greyback had kidnapped them both and disappeared.
It later discovered after the remaining Death Eaters had been rounded up and the students accounted for.
"Draco Malfoy repaired the Vanishing Cabinet that Peeves damaged a few years ago." Dumbledore answer solemnly, overlooking the various devices on his desk. "It appears one of Lord Voldemort's supporters had one and through the connection between these two Cabinets, the Death Eaters were able to gain access, bypassing all of the wards and magical enchantments placed on the castle." He tapped an instrument, watching it twirl around and around.
"At least we were able to capture quite a few of them. Bellatrix, the Carrows, and eleven others have been safely ferried back to Azkaban where they belong." Arthur said, trying to calm his frantic wife. "Fenrir couldn't have gone far with Harry and Ginny. We have his wand from where it had been left behind."
"But it's the night of the full moon. The beast has had them for a day now. I can't lose my only daughter and Harry at the same time, Albus."
"Let us hope Potter does not do anything rash." Snape softly said. "Merlin knows how trouble tends to find him."
Molly gave a soft cry, grabbing the conjured handkerchief Arthur handed her and burying her face into it. Snape's words had done nothing to help her except only increase her worry over the missing children. "Oh, Albus, how can we find them?"
"Sirius, Remus, Tonks, and Kingsley are hurrying along the trail we believed that Fenrir took. If the trail provides to be true, then we have a chance of getting them before they fall into Voldemort's hands." He dare not even bring up the chance that Greyback would still have Harry and Miss Weasley during the full moon. Dumbledore looked up as Minerva burst into the room. "Have you news of the injured?"
His Deputy nodded. "I have heard back from St. Mungo's, Arthur, Molly. It looks like William will be okay. He will be heavily scarred however from Fenrir's attack. The rest will recover in time."
"What about the students?" Arthur asked as Molly burst out in tears again.
Minerva gave a small smile. "It looks like Mr. Potter gave them the Felix Felicis Professor Slughorn gave him. They all took a sip of it before engaging the Death Eaters. They have no wounds among them, thank Merlin. Ron told me that Ginny's sip probably ran out right before the explosion, which explains why Greyback was able to get to her. As for Draco Malfoy, he is currently being secreted to the safe house. No word as of yet on his mother's fate."
Snape's face twisted, knowing the chances of Narcissa Malfoy living after the failure of her son were slim. Lucius Malfoy had paid dearly for his failure at the Ministry the year before with his life. Currently, his rotting corpse adorned the entrance arch to Malfoy Manor as a reminder what failure would cost among Voldemort's followers.
Dumbledore sat down behind his desk, looking more aged than Arthur had ever seen him. "I can only hope that Voldemort does not seek him out like he did with James and Lily. He does not take betrayal lightly." The faces of those in the room paled as memories of the report of Karkaroff's death came to them. No, Voldemort would not be too kind to the Malfoy Heir if he were ever to get to him.
"Where will you hide him?"
"I fear that for the time being, he will need to stay at Mundungus' place until we can find a more permanent and safe home for him." Dumbledore sighed, a hand going to his forehead. "I fear that our only option to keep young Draco alive would be to ask Sirius to take him into his home."
Minerva's nostrils flared as Snape scowled. "That house is no place for a child to be sequestered, Albus."
"I have visited the house since we last were there and it seems Sirius has come to some sort of agreement with Kreacher. The house has been completely renovated. It is the only place that is the most secure against Riddle and his followers." Albus said, holding off any disagreement from the two professors, especially Severus'. "Now, please attend to your duties. We must keep the secret of Harry's and Miss Weasley's disappearance from the media until they safely back within our protection."
High above the forests located far from Hogwarts to the southwest, Nymphadora Tonks followed the large brown wolf running easily on the ground, wand held tightly in her hand. They had been tracking the scent Greyback had left behind even though it was already over a day old. Thanks to the Wolfsbane Potion, however, Remus Lupin could easily track the scent. The other Aurors who had been assigned to look for the rogue wolf had scoffed at the idea of using a werewolf and a trained dog to search for Greyback which had caused the search group to split up.
No one could believe that the werewolf had easily escaped from Hogwarts, carrying two teenagers without being noticed. The moment Sirius had heard that his godson was missing, he had flooed directly to the Headmaster's office, demanding to be allowed on one of the search teams that were being formed. Dumbledore had argued that Sirius would only risk that he would be discovered by the other Aurors that the new minister was sending to secure the castle from further attacks and to aid in the search. Remus, though tired and exhausted, had asked if Dumbledore would be willing to allow Sirius under the condition that he would pose as a search and rescue dog and never shift back to his human form until he was safely back at Grimmauld Place.
Sirius had balked at the suggestion but seeing Dumbledore waver a bit had him agreeing to it. He was currently with Kingsley Shacklebolt, following another trail that seemed to be forged by what smelled like Harry but they couldn't be sure as the scent was faint.
She and Remus had been travelling steady for the past six hours by themselves. So far, she hadn't seen any sign of a foot print or anything the past half a mile but she trusted Remus to catch any scent her spells and human nose could.
Suddenly a bark beneath her and Remus bolting faster through the trees had her believing that her boyfriend had finally found something. Together, the two of them sped through the waning night until they entered a small clearing. Almost immediately, Tonks caught the smell of blood and death hanging in the still air.
As she landed, stumbling slightly as she dismounted, Remus walked up to a large dark mass near the east side of the clearing, his nose close to the ground. She was almost there when Remus lifted his head and growled at her slightly, huffing at the end.
Stopping a few feet away, Tonks eyed the thing before her. The scent of blood was stronger around it which meant whatever it was had been alive before being killed brutally if the signs around them were of any indication. As Remus continued to sniff around, Tonks began picking out clues. The dark mass seemed to be covered in light fur that was reddened by the blood split on it, the moon giving the corpse a reddish highlight to it. In some places, however, the natural color of the fur shone through; a bright silvery grey.
"Remus, is that Greyback?" The brown wolf raised its head again before giving a single nod. "Oh Merlin." The worst case scenarios began flashing through her mind. What if they had been too late and Greyback had handed over Harry and Ginny to Death Eaters before being killed himself?
Tonks swept her wand, a misty silvery version of Remus appeared before her, waiting for her message and directions. As she composed a message to Kingsley and Sirius regarding what they had found and their relative location as well as an order to the Patronus to lead them back to the clearing, Remus had gone from sniffing around the corpse to the surrounding area.
The Patronus loped off through the trees they had just come from, Tonks turning back to examine what Remus was sniffing. The grass in the clearing had been gouged and torn, blood splattered around in darker patches among the perfect werewolf prints in the dirt. Tonk's fingers itched to find who the blood belonged to, but the risk of infections was very high, considering the virus in the blood was still active until the moon went down.
Remus growled as he came to another spot, his ears lying flat against his head.
"What's wrong, Remus?" She asked before remembering that he couldn't reply unless it was a yes or no question. There were definitely times where she hated that Remus was infected as a werewolf. Remus being in his wolf form made communication and comforting him very difficult. During those times, like now, Tonks cursed that Greyback had ever been born. Slowly, Tonks began the question game, Remus huffing no every time. After ten questions, Tonks sense that Remus was getting frustrated as was she since she was no closer to understanding why Remus was so worried. At least, Tonks knew that Harry and Ginny were still alive as Remus had indicated the two of them were both still alive when they left the clearing.
After what seemed like an eternity, Kingsley appeared over the tree line, Sirius in his Animagus form being carried in the front. As the Auror approached the ground, Padfoot jumped off, landing hard and heading to where Remus was.
Kingsley jumped off and moved until he was standing next to Tonks, watching as the two canines began what looked like a conversation. "What did you find?"
"If what Remus indicated was true, then that thing," Tonks pointed at the dark mass behind her. "Is the body of Greyback. It looks like the werewolf fought viciously with something before the fight came to a brutal end with him dead on the ground."
"Greyback?" Tonks nodded. "Most wizards don't ever walk away after meeting Greyback, much less if he's in his wolf form. Poor Bill will be scarred for life if he survives. I wonder who was powerful enough to take Greyback on and actually kill him? Usually, it's Greyback who sends the other back in multiple body bags."
Tonks winced at the news that Ginny's oldest brother had been mauled right before Dumbledore had joined the battle to push back the invading Death Eaters from the castle. Most had thought that Fleur Delacour would leave the once-handsome man despite the fact that wedding was less than three months away. They had been surprised when she had straightened her spine and tended to her wounded husband, making sure that the pain from the healing wounds were soothed and his bandages changed on time.
"Whatever it was, definitely took him on and won." Tonks paused as an errant thought came to her. "Do you think it was Harry?"
Kingsley raised a dark eyebrow. "As much as I hate to say it, I think Harry would have fallen if he had dared to take Greyback on. All Greyback would have to do is get past his defenses and get the fight into a physical one and he would lose, so no, I don't believe it was Harry." He motioned to the fight. "I do think that one of them is injured and they're heading somewhere since neither of them know how to apparate."
"I just hope that we're not too late." Tonks said quietly, her usually pink hair shifting to a deep blue, showing her distress. "It would kill Sirius if Voldemort has his hands on Harry."
Before Kingsley could reply, Sirius broke the conversation by turning his head to them and giving two short barks followed by a short howl.
"What does that mean?" Tonks asked.
Kingsley mounted his broom. "It means that we should follow them." Tonks quickly followed the senior Auror and soon the two of them were following the pair of canines through the forest once more. Being the one with the better nose, Remus took the lead, guiding Remus and Tonks through the maze, keeping his nose to the ground. Sirius traveled in a pattern that had him fanning out from Remus' trail, crossing back again and again to see if there were any secondary trails branching out from the main one.
After a while, Kingsley noticed where the pair of canines was taking them.
"There are a number of cave systems around Hogsmeade, though most of them are outside normal wizards' walking distance. We're heading toward the one of the closer ones. Hardly anyone goes there now."
"Why would they head there?" Tonks asked, trying to keep her flight low but high enough to skim over the highest branches of the canopy.
"Best guess would be shelter from the elements, especially since Greyback has no wand. Or his pack may be there." The older Auror tested the wind direction. "Thank Merlin the wind's blowing against us."
"Looks like they're picking up speed." Tonks shouted out, urging her broom to go faster.
The two canines were definitely picking up speed, their noses no longer on the ground. About ten minutes later, the four of them burst out of the trees, just a few yards from the entrance of a number of caves. Remus came to stop but began barking when Sirius did not stop, heading for one on the far right.
Tonks and Kingsley landed, Remus coming up to them, whining in the direction where Sirius had gone. Knowing her boyfriend, Tonks knew what he was trying to say. "Let's hope that Sirius can handle whatever he's about to find."
Harry, please be alright. Sirius pleaded to himself, his heart in his throat as he edged deeper into the cave.
In the first clearing, Sirius had been horrified at the amount of blood sprayed all over the ground. He became even more horrified when he recognized Harry's smell in some of the larger puddles and carried the scent of the werewolf. That could only mean one thing; Harry had been bitten by Greyback before the older werewolf had died. Remus had drawn his attention to another area in the clearing that still carried a number of scents. There, he had not just smelled Ginny's but the air was ripe and musky. The smell of sex hung in the air. None of their scents were completely theirs as it was infected by the familiar smell of the werewolf. If that had been Greyback's dead body, Sirius could only come to one conclusion.
Harry and Ginny had mated in the most gut-wrenching ways of all.
On the cave floor, a number of the paw prints were outlined in blood, confirming that Harry had come down through here. The urge to transform back was overpowering but he wasn't sure if the moon had set yet. If they hadn't and he stumbled upon them in their werewolf forms, Sirius risked being infected at the very least. He couldn't risk their mental wellbeing with his stupidity and rashness. He would forever owe James and Lily and most importantly, Harry for being rash that November day fifteen years ago.
Carefully, Sirius padded through the cave, ears pricked forward to catch anything. Growls coming from the shadows ahead stopped him in his tracks. Even with his night vision being better, Sirius could not catch a glimpse of where the growls were coming from, the sounds bouncing off the walls.
Remus had once warned the other Marauders of coming upon a werewolf on the full moon, especially those trapped. As much as Sirius wanted to stay, he knew it was better to retreat. As slowly as he could, Sirius backed out, followed by the growls.
Back at the cave entrance, Sirius saw that Remus was still in his wolf form, Kingsley and Tonks flanking him on either side. He walked up to them and sat by Remus. It was only then that Sirius realized his mistake. Tonks reached out and slapped Sirius on the ear.
"Are you that daft, Sirius? The moon hadn't gone down yet. If they had been in there, they could have torn you apart!"
Unable to contain himself anymore, Sirius transformed, rubbing the spot where she had hit him. "I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking straight. I had to make sure that Harry was still here and that trail wasn't cold."
"Well, Black. Is he in there?"
Sirius' shoulders slumped. "Yeah, he's in there, Kingsley, along with Ginny. Both of them are werewolves and Harry's still bleeding. The smell of blood was strong." The former prisoner believed that he shouldn't tell them of the fact that the two of them had mated with each other in the cave, not just once from the smell of it. The stench was too strong. Sirius was beginning to think that Harry was staking his claim on the young Weasley, to show that she belonged to him. At any other time, Sirius would have made a joke about the Potter tendency to fall in love with red-haired spitfires but he just couldn't bring himself to even come up with one.
"What are we going to do?"
Kingsley looked at the sky, musing over Tonk's question. "How long until the moon sets?"
"About half an hour from now?"
"I think it would be better if we inform Dumbledore that we found them but for them to wait for us at the castle gates with Madam Pomfrey. By the time they find their way here, it'll be morning and we would have already transported them to Hogwarts."
"Let me go in first. Tonks can tend to Remus." Sirius requested, his mind already beginning on how to hide the evidence of Harry and Ginny's nocturnal events until he told the Weasleys.
The Auror nodded. "Alright then. Tonks, if you can do the honors."
The wait was excruciating slow, Sirius taking the time to pace back and forth in front of the cave. Kingsley had warned him that he risked being caught in such an open clearing but Sirius had only given the Auror a glare. Remus stayed near Tonk's side as she was carrying his pack with all his necessities. Clothes did not transform along with the wizard unlike Animagi.
Sirius spun around as Remus began to howl in pain, his body contorting. As the fur retreated and his bones realigned back into a humanoid shape, both Sirius and Kingsley turned away to give Remus a sense of privacy. Sirius' ears picked up the screams coming from within the cave.
Unable to wait a second more, Sirius gave Kingsley a pointed look. "Wait until I give you the call." Without waiting for a response, Sirius transformed back into his dog form and ran off.
A minute later, he reached the point where he had heard the two werewolves growling at him. He slowed down, his nose to the ground. No growls arose at his approach and the stench of the werewolf was no longer overpowering like it had been when he first entered. Sirius transformed back into his human form and lit his wand. Turning around the bend he saw, Sirius came up on his godson and his girlfriend.
"Shite."
Breathing deeply as not to vomit, Sirius opened them again, blanching at the sight before him.
Both of them were naked, intimately entwined around each other. Harry had a leg thrown over Ginny's bringing her closer to him while his arms were wrapped around her chest, his hand possessively lying on her breasts. Blood covered every inch of Harry's skin, some places already dried. A few trickles of blood seeped from the still gaping wounds. Across Harry's body, slashes tore open his skin across his shoulders, sides, and back, smaller cuts and bruises decorating the rest. Ginny had a smaller amount of cuts and bruises on her but otherwise, seemed intact compared to his godson. The blood that covered her appeared to be from Harry's wounds. Both of them were trembling from the pain of the transformation despite being unconscious.
With a flick of his wand, Sirius sent a Patronus to get the rest of the team in here. He had just finished conjuring sheets for them when the rest of the group appeared, Kingsley in the lead.
The Auror cursed at seeing the covered form of the teenagers. "How injured are they?"
"It looks like Harry took the brunt of it. We need to get them to Hogwarts quickly." Sirius informed them. "How are you Remus?"
"I've been better."
Kingsley picked up a couple of rocks from the floor and turned them into portkeys. "They'll take us directly to the gates. Madam Pomfrey should be waiting there for our arrival." He handed one to Sirius who quickly placed it on Harry's exposed soldier. He counted down from three and with a flash, they were gone. A second later, Kingsley followed with Ginny and Remus and Tonks brought up the rear.
