Chapter Two
"Sure, Ally," Ginny Potter said
with a wide smile, glancing up from Witch
Weekly. "Of course your friend can come over for Christmas. Oh, I'd be
so glad to have you here, dear. You haven't spent Christmas at home for years
now. It'll be wonderful to have all of us together again!"
"Yes, mum," Albus said weakly.
"It will."
"Why doesn't your friend go home to
his own family, though?" His mother asked curiously. "Are they having
trouble or something?"
"No, not exactly," Albus
answered nervously. "He usually stays at Hogwarts for Christmas, too. But
we... we thought it might be nice to... er.... bring him here," he
finished awkwardly.
"Bring who here?" asked Harry, entering
the livingroom from the kitchen, carrying a yoghurt and licking on a spoon.
"Ally wants to spend Christmas here
this year," his wife told him excitedly. "And he wants to bring a
friend."
"Oh," said Harry in surprise.
"That's great!"
"It's about time, too!" said
Ginny. "In his last year at Hogwarts, he finally realises how nice it is to be home."
"Ah, leave him be," said Harry
lightly, smiling at his youngest son. "I always stayed at Hogwarts for
every holiday, too."
"Well, but you had a horrible
family," Ginny replied, slightly muffed. "He doesn't, I hope!"
"No, mum," Albus hurriedly
assured her. "Of course not. I love to be here, I just... like Hogwarts a
lot."
"And there is nothing wrong with
that," Harry sat down on the couch, eating his yoghurt. "So, tell us
about this friend of yours. Do we know him?"
Albus drew a deep breath. "Yes, I
believe you do. His name is Scorpius. You went to school with his father, Draco
Malfoy." He raised his head almost defiantly as he said this and looked
straight at his dad.
Harry had stopped moving, the spoon still
in his mouth. Ginny, however, gasped. "Malfoy?" she said in shock.
"Yes," Albus said firmly.
"Scorpius Malfoy."
"Hmmm." Harry hummed
thoughtfully around the spoon.
"You are friends with the Malfoy boy?" Ginny almost shrieked.
"Yes." Albus resistes the urge
to look at his shoes. "Why shouldn't I be?"
"Why
shouldn't...?" His mother gasped. "Because he's a Malfoy. Because his family supported
You-Know-Who! His father used to be a Death Eater! His grandfather, too!"
"Exactly." Albus interrupted
her, pale but calmly. "His family
supported Voldemort. His father used
to be a Death Eater. Scorpius is not them, you know? He's my friend."
"And when did that happen?"
Harry asked, his eyes fixed on his son.
"We've been friends for years
now."
"Why did you never tell us about
that? I'd like to know your friends."
"Because... because I knew you would
react like this," Albus mumbled.
"And we have every reason to react
like this!" Ginny yelled. Harry gave her a sharp look. "Ginny,"
he said, "Albus is right. Whatever his family may have done before him, it
is not the boy's fault."
Albus felt a surge of love for his father
swell up in him and looked at him with gratitude.
"Don't you understand?" Ginny
hissed furiously. "He's probably just getting on Ally's good side so that
he can win his trust and gather information about our family."
Albus' jaw clenched. "He is not a spy for his father," he said
through clenched teeth.
"How do you know that?" Ginny
snapped at him. "We know his lot better than you do!"
"And I know him better than you do!" Albus yelled at her. Ginny looked
shocked. Albus-Severus had never raised his voice against her before.
Harry raised his hands to calm them down.
Then he turned to Albus. "He is your friend?" Harry asked him. The
boy nodded. "And you trust him?" Albus nodded again.
"Tell him he is welcome in our
house," Harry said simply.
"What?"
Ginny exploded. "Harry, you can't
be-"
"I can't what?" Harry said.
"Invite our children's friends?"
"I will not have a Malfoy in our
house, and that is my last word," Ginny said, and left the room abruptly.
Harry and Albus were left behind in
silence.
"I'm sorry," Albus muttered
miserably, collapsing in an armchair and not looking at his father. Harry
smiled weakly. "You're allowed to be friends with whomever you want,"
he said. "But maybe you should have been more careful with telling us.
This was a bit... sudden."
Albus sighed. "Does that mean
Scorpius can't come?"
"I don't know," Harry said after
a pause. "I wouldn't mind much, but you've heard your mother. I will try
to persuade her, but if I can't... well, I can't invite your friend if it
upsets her that much. You understand that, don't you?"
Albus nodded sadly.
"Good. Well," Harry said,
standing up. "I'll see what I can do, okay?" With another comforting
smile and a pat on his son's shoulder, he
followed his wife to their bedroom.
Albus sat in the chair, staring into the
fire and thinking about how he would explain to his boyfriend that he wasn't
wanted in his family. It wasn't as though they hadn't considered the
possibility, of course, but... Albus sighed. It would have been brilliant to see
his family becoming friends with the boy who meant so much to him.
He was shaken out of his thoughts when the
front door opened. James was home. He had been out to the local store for milk
and bread – which was why Albus had chosen that particular time to speak to his
parents. Albus heard him whistle as he put the things away in the kitchen. It
was easy for him. James was never worried and never sad. Sure, he was in
trouble a lot. But he'd never had to hide a relationship from the entire world.
He'd never worried about a time after school in which their parents might not
support him.
James came into the livingroom, grinning
as broadly as always. "Hi, Ally."
"Hi James," Albus sighed.
"Why so gloomy?" James asked,
sitting down next to him but not really waiting for an answer. "Listen,
about that confession thing. What do you say we do it at dinner, hmm? Food
makes them happy, they can't say no when they're eating, and...-"
"I've already asked them," Albus
interrupted him.
"You have?" James said in
surprise. "How did it go?"
"Look at me," Albus said
exasperatedly. "What does my face tell
you, James?"
"Oh. So... they said no?"
"Mum said no. She's really angry. Dad
says Scorpius is not coming against her will."
"Oh," said James.
"Yes," Albus almost snarled.
"Oh. That's right." He got
to his feet.
"Ally," James said soothingly.
"I'm sure mum will come around. She always does."
Albus laughed bitterly. "This is not
like giving Lily a Tongue-Tongue-Toffee, you know. This is something serious.
Which means it's something you don't understand." And he walked out
of the sitting room and slammed the door
shut.
James sat there, dumbfounded.
Albus was lying face up on the mattress on
the floor. He had succeeded in holding back the angry tears that wanted to
escape, but somehow, this victory over his body didn't make him feel much
better.
There was a soft knock on the door.
Oh please,
not James,
Albus silently prayed. But then again, James wouldn't knock. "Yes?" he called quietly.
The door opened ajar and Harry's head
poked inside. "Hey Ally," he said. "Can we talk?"
Albus nodded and sat up on the mattress.
He tried not to look at his father, but he needed to know... so he looked. One
glimpse of Harry's face told him what Ginny had said. His shoulders slumped,
and he looked away again.
"I'm sorry," Harry said softly,
sitting down next to him on the mattress. "I've tried to talk to her, but
she has made up her mind. She will not let Scorpius come here."
Albus nodded with clenched teeth, looking
at the floor.
"I think it would have been
nice," Harry continued. "But apparently, we are not ready for that
meeting yet." He smiled faintly, but Albus couldn't see it.
"Why?" Albus said, suddenly.
"Why can't she just...? I thought it would be much more difficult to
convince you! You were the one always fighting with Scorpius' father, weren't
you?"
Harry's mouth twitched. "I was,"
he agreed. "But Ginny..." he sighed. "Ginny has her own
experiences with the Malfoy family, you know?"
"What experiences?" Albus said.
Harry considered him for a moment.
"If I tell you this," he said finally, "you must promise me you
will not tell anyone. And please keep it from your mum that I told you in the
first place. Alright?"
Albus was surprised. "Oh," he
said. "Well... if she wouldn't want me to know, then maybe you shouldn't
tell me."
"That is up to you, of course. But I
think you have a right to understand why she refuses you this."
Albus nodded. He did want to understand
that.
"When your mum was in her first year
at Hogwarts," his dad began, "she was fooled by Lord Voldemort. She
was tricked into setting free a monster to attack muggleborns. Several
students, a ghost, and a cat were petrified. Aunt Hermione was one of them. They
were all lucky to have not been killed, but had the attacks continued, it would
have been only a matter of time."
Albus stared with his mouth open. He had
never heard this story before. Harry seemed to guess his thoughts and said:
"We have never told you this because it is highly humiliating for Ginny.
Of course, Voldemort was powerful enough to lure any wizard into a trap, and Ginny was only eleven at the time. But
she is still haunted by this memory. She terrorized the entire school for a
year and endangered people close to her. She herself almost died, but I think
that is not the worst part for her. Ginny feels guilty for it. She knows it was
not really her fault, but she will never forgive herself."
Harry swallowed. "And neither,"
he added in a softer voice, "will she forgive the man who was responsible
for setting up the trap. That was Lucius Malfoy, Ally. Your friend's
grandfather. He has caused her a torment she will never forget."
Albus stared into space. "Oh,"
he said hollowly. "That.... that must have been..." But he didn't
know what to say. He didn't know what that
must have been like.
"I agree with you that your friend
and his father are not the same person," Harry said softly. "But we
have known Draco all too well, and he was exactly like his own father. That
gave us the impression that," he hesitated, "...that certain things
do run in the Malfoy family. Do you understand?"
"Yes," Albus said. "I think
I do."
"Good," Harry said,
straightening up. "I'm sorry." He gave Albus another apologetic smile
and left the room.
