Chapter Two: Thanks for the Memories, Even Though They Weren’t So Great
Sadie took her time preparing that evening. It was September 1stand the scarlet Hogwarts Express should be pulling into Hogsmeade Station any moment now, full of returning students, prepared for another exciting school year. And, of course, the First Years, entering Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the first time; bursting with excitement, wonder, and fear. But most important of all was Harry Potter, her godson.
Sadie swallowed the all-too-familiar lump that formed in her throat as nostalgia took her back to that Halloween night 10 years ago when her best friends were murdered by Voldemort, and Hagrid forced a calm, sleeping baby Harry out of the arms of a near-hysterical Sadie. To this day, she couldn’t understand why Dumbledore thought it would be better for Harry to grow up with those barbarians, the Dursleys, than live with her and Remus. As much as Sadie loved and respected Dumbledore, she always held deep resentment towards him since that night; the night her entire family was taken from her, and her world almost came to an end. In fact, if it wasn’t for her best friend, Remus Lupin, she might now have been dead by her own hand or shacked up in an asylum somewhere. Made more of a fact after Sadie found out what happened between Peter Pettigrew and Sirius Black, which resulted with 15 deaths- the innocent bystanders, Peter, and the emotional and mental breakdown of Sirius, as he was arrested and promptly thrown into Azkaban, charged with the murders of all 14, plus Lily’s and James’s deaths. In her heart, Sadie knew Sirius was innocent, but nothing about that night made any sense whatsoever, so trying to logically sort through everything and attempt to make sense of it all would be futile, and not to mention extremely arduous.
Just days prior to that night, Sadie found out her younger brother Regulus was killed by Voldemort and, although they were never much of a family, as he went off to become a Death Eater to make mommy and daddy proud, Sadie was still deeply affected by the official loss of her brother. By blood, the only family that remained with Sadie was her fraternal twin brother, Sirius. They were estranged from their parents at the age of 16 and keep in no contact with anyone else of their extended family, spare the occasional visit with Uncle Alphard, and their favourite cousin Andromeda and her husband and young daughter, Ted and Nymphadora. But Sadie’s real home and her real family resided within this very castle. The greatest seven years of her life were spent as a student here with her ‘brothers’ and ‘sister’, Lily; she was never very close to any other female peers as Sirius would, in typical fashion, woo them, bed them, and never speak to them again, so that definitely made her friendships a little dicey. And now, 21 years since she first entered Hogwarts as a student, she returned as a teacher.
With that thought, Sadie quickly snapped back to reality and remembered she had to start heading down to the Great Hall. She quickly finished applying her makeup and, to top it off, selected a deep, sexy red lipstick to enhance her full, heart-shaped lips.
“Great colour!” Her enchanted mirror exclaimed.
“Thanks!” replied Sadie with a bright smile.
She stepped back and examined herself in the mirror, running her hands down her torso and sides to smooth out yet another LBD. She ran her fingers through her hair to amp up the volume and then stepped into a pair of maroon peep-toe stilettos. Before she left her bedroom, she seized her wandand customary Hogwarts robe, which she flung over the crook of her arm, and proceeded down the staircase and out the door.
As she exited from another shortcut, she found herself right behind none other than Severus Snape.
“Good evening, Professor! On your way to the Great Hall?”
Severus slowly turned around, dreading this fateful encounter with the female Black.
“Clearly,” he replied dryly.
“Excellent. Would you like to escort me?” Sadie asked with a smile.
“No.” He stated bluntly.
“Lovely! You really are quite the gentleman, Severus.” She said as she linked arms with the puzzled, yet fuming man.
“You really are a peculiar witch, Professor.”
“Oh, thank you, Severus.” She lightly squeezed his bicep.
Yet even more confused with her responses, Severus continued with polite chit-chat, hoping he could satisfy the witch and get rid of her before long. “So, how did you enjoy your first night back?”
“It was absolutely fantastic. I really am glad to be back.” She beamed up at Severus.
To this, Severus didn’t respond and quickly avoided her gaze. They continued to walk together to the Great Hall- Severus walking stiffly with his hands clasped together in front of him; Sadie joyfully taking in the sights of the castle while humming a tune unfamiliar to him. When they reached the large, open doors of the Great Hall, they noticed they were the last to arrive, other than McGonagall and Hagrid, of course, as they had their respective duties to attend to with the first year students. Severus quickly shook Sadie off his arm and wished her ‘bon appetite’ before he hurried inside, leaving Sadie standing alone. She shrugged off his demeanour and ruled it off as ‘classic Snape’; her expectations of him weren’t very high, anyway.
As she put on her cloak dismally (it really did nothing for her figure) and began to walk inside, Albus Dumbledore approached her.
“Good evening, Headmaster.”
“Hello, Professor,” he added with a smile.
Sadie laughed, “That’s still going to take a while to get used to, I must say!”
“Don’t worry, you have plenty of time to adjust. And the students will love you.” He encouraged.
“Thank you, sir,” Sadie smiled gratefully.
“Did you enjoy your accommodations?”
“Oh, very much so! Everything was just perfect. I didn’t know you had such a knack for interior decorating.”
Dumbledore laughed, “Oh, just a little hobby I picked up over the years after having to decorate so many different chambers to suit the ever-changing tastes of all of the Defence Against the Dark Arts that have passed through the revolving door.”
“Yeesh, that’s true. Here’s hoping Professor Quirrell will stick! Oh, by the way, Headmaster... Thank you. For allowing me to have Sirius with me here; I feel much more comforted knowing my brother is watching over me.”
Dumbledore smiled kindly. “Of course. It was a lovely exception to make for you. Oh, we must be heading inside; Hagrid just walked in.”
Together they walked up to the Head table. Dumbledore turned to face Sadie.
“I hope you don’t mind sitting on the Slytherin end; the other Professors have come to enjoy their seating arrangement over the years!”
“Not a problem at all.” Sadie smiled. She slipped into her seat next to Professor Quirrell, who was chatting to Professor Grubbly-Plank, as Dumbledore walked away to take his place at the center of the table. There was a nagging thought at the back of her mind that accused Dumbledore of wanting to keep her away from Harry; the Gryffindor table is all the way across the room. Sadie shook her head. She was being way too presuming; Harry hadn’t even walked in yet, let alone have been sorted! There’s a chance he could be in Slytherin. A very, very, very small chance, Sadie thought with a small grin.
She looked to the empty seat next to her and assumed it must belong to Snape, as it was located directly in front of the Slytherin pupils. She looked down the Head Table and didn’t see him conversing with any of the other teachers, and wondered where he must have disappeared off to. Her thoughts were interrupted as Professor McGonagall walked in, with a trail of timid little first years following closely behind.
Well, there you have it! Why does Snape hate Sadie? Is the reason anything beyond the notorious Sirius/Snape feud? (Hint: Yes! ;)) What will blossom, if anything, between sexy Sadie and sinister Snape? How will Sadie react upon finally meeting her godson? How will Harry react, learning he has family who do care for him and are so near? Oooooou, still so much left to be revealed! As I mentioned at the start, if you do want more, alls you need to do is post a review! Merci! ~S.B.<3
