Chapter 2
“Draco. You’re going to be late.” Narcissa yelled up the steps at her struggling son.
He knew he was running late, but he couldn’t bring himself to leave. As much as he wanted to finish school, he was petrified of going back.
Narcissa had happily informed him that it had been “The-Boy-Who-Lived-Again” and his trusted female sidekick who had testified at the last minute in his trial.
Draco couldn’t decide if this made him more uncomfortable than not knowing, but it was definitely messing with his mind.
His friends had been by several times, and he was thankful for that, but going out in public – even if it was just back to school – was different.
Draco would never admit it aloud, but he was frightened. And Malfoys were never frightened.
He steeled his shoulders and flicked his wand at his trunk.
“Draco!” Narcissa shouted again. “Let’s go!”
“Coming, woman! Control yourself.”
Draco followed his trunk down the stairs, and met his mother in front of the living room fireplace.
“Are you coming with me?” He asked, softly.
“You know I’m not. I’m not to leave, and you’re only to go straight to the station and get on the train. There will be someone to check on you, you know.”
“I know, mother.” He whispered.
“You’ll be fine. Don’t be nervous.”
“I’m not nervous.” He declared. “I just – “
“You’ll be fine.” His mother promised. “But if you don’t go soon, you’ll be late.”
He looked at his mother for a moment.
She tucked a piece of hair behind his ear, and kissed his cheek.
“Write often.”
Draco nodded and turned to the Fireplace, before loudly calling “Platform 9 ¾ King’s Cross Station.” And he was whisked quickly away.
The platform was crowded and he slid slowly through the people and onto the train. There was an empty compartment near the back, where he tucked his trunk and settled into the corner seat. He pulled out a book – a Muggle book, no less – and began reading. He pulled his legs up to his chest, and made himself as small as possible.
There was a lot of noise in the hallway, and Draco shut his eyes tightly, hoping that no one would walk in.
That hope was crushed, however, when the door flew open and The-Boy-Who-Lived-Again stood in the doorway with his posse.
“Oh – uh – sorry.” Harry offered. “Just looking for an empty compartment.”
Draco stared blankly.
“We’ll just be going now, then.” Hermione said, brightly. “Have a nice trip.”
She slammed the door shut, and Draco relaxed back into his seat.
Holy. Mother. Of. Merlin.
How had Draco never noticed the way that Harry’s t-shirt clung tightly to his biceps and across his chest before?
And why did he have to notice now?
Harry wanted to bang his head off the wall. They’d been to every compartment on the train, and there were no empty ones. And they’d only come across one that really had enough room for all three of them. Except that one had Malfoy in it.
If they wanted to sit together, they’d have to go back to that compartment.
Which would be fine, if Harry wasn’t suddenly outrageously, inexplicable, and unacceptably attracted to him.
He wasn’t quite sure when Draco had surpassed attractive and become gorgeous. Although, to Harry’s credit he had been pretty preoccupied with The-Bad-Guy-Who-Wouldn’t-Die, so it was kind of understandable that he’d missed Draco’s apparent blossoming into a God.
Draco had grown to about six foot three. That was still a good seven inches above Harry, who had topped off at about five-eight. But where Harry was thicker, and muscular, Draco was lithe. Harry had noticed the muscles on his forearms when he’d opened the door, and that alone had been enough to get his heart racing. His hair was a bit longer, and it wasn’t slicked back anymore, which softened his face a bit. His pointy features had become more angular and striking, and his air of superiority seemed completely gone.
“We could go back…” Hermione offered.
“I’d rather jump off the train.” Ron snapped back.
“Ron.” Hermione warned. “He’s not the same.”
Harry was silent.
“There’s nowhere else…” Hermione edged.
“Oh, fine.” Ron threw his hands in the air. “Let’s openly throw ourselves into situations with Death Eaters. Who cares that we survived the war, let’s die now!”
“You’re being a touch dramatic, Ron.” Harry smiled, turning to walk back to Draco’s compartment. “He’s a Malfoy above all else. He’d never do anything to put himself in jeopardy.”
“And he’s not his father.” Hermione slipped her hand into Ron’s and pulled him after her.
Ron mumbled the entire way back to the last carriage, and Harry slid the door open gently.
Draco startled and looked up at the doorway.
“Um, there’s no other open compartments – can we?” Harry asked, awkwardly.
“Yeah.” Draco shifted further into the corner and pulled his knees closer to his chest. “Sure.”
Harry sat next to Draco, and Ron and Hermione sat across from them.
Draco continued reading, and tried not to listen to the other three talking.
“The Patil twins are definitely coming back.” Hermione was saying. “I talked to Parvati. And she wasn’t sure about Lavender, but she thought she wouldn’t be. She said she doesn’t really need NEWTs to design fashion.”
“No loss there. Neville will definitely be back, and Dean and Seamus. So that’s most of us.” Ron stated. “What about Ravenclaw?”
“Corner got hire to play for Puddlemere.” Harry remembered. “That MacDougal bird was a marked Death Eater.”
“Boot and Brocklehurst got married, didn’t they?” Ron asked. “I thought Ginny said they got engaged last year.”
“No they’re getting married after we graduate. They’re coming back.” Hermione replied. “I saw Mandy in Diagon Alley. That leaves Goldstien, who I’m sure is coming, and the Turpin girl. She’s a toss-up. From Hufflepuff, Hannah, Susan, and Justin are definitely back.”
“And Ernie.” Ron added. “He’ll be back.”
“What about Slytherin?” Hermione asked, a bit awkwardly. All three Gryffindors tried not to look at Malfoy.
“Blaise, Theo, and Pansy. Daphne’s the only other one that could have come back but she got married over the summer and he didn’t want her to come.”
All the others stared at him.
“Sorry.” Draco could feel the flush rising in his cheeks. “I wasn’t – I mean – sorry.”
“No,” Harry finally recovered. “It’s fine.” He smiled at Draco. “McGonagall told us that we’d have our own dorm. It will be kind of set up like the others, but the rooms are designed for two people. We’ll still have a common room and all that but we’ll share with all the houses.”
“Really? That’ll be nice, to be away from everyone else.”
“Harry – do you think it’ll still be by house? Like – I’ll still be with you, right?” Ron asked, suddenly worried.
“I don’t know.” He sighed. “There are five Gryffindor blokes. One of us will probably be roomed with someone else. Bet it’s me and you’ll be with Neville.”
Harry knew who he’d like to room with, but realized the chances of actually getting to stay with Mal – Draco was pretty slim.
“Well, I guess that’d be okay…” Ron admitted grudgingly. “Rather be with you, though.”
“McGonogall said something about helping with classes, too.” Hermione said to break the tension once again building. “Did you hear anything?”
“Well, I know that Neville is definitely helping with Herbology. Professor Sprout has so much to make up after the battle, you know? I think the idea is that he’ll get her job someday. I don’t know about the rest of us.”
“Whose doing Defense?” Draco asked, softly.
“Kingsley. He’ll be here and at the Ministry, I think.”
The compartment fell silent, and no one really had anything to add to the conversation.
Harry looked up at Hermione and Ron, and smiled to himself. Ron had wrapped an arm around her shoulders, and she was leaning into him. They both had their eyes closed, and Harry knew if they weren’t already, they’d be asleep soon.
“They’re perfect, yeah?” Draco asked, softly, startling Harry.
“Definitely. It took them long enough to realize it.” Harry smile grew. “At least they won’t fight anymore.”
“And you and Ginny?” Draco asked, off-handedly.
“Uh. No.” Harry blushed. “I mean – we were but it wasn’t right. She’s not my type.” He paused and thought about it. “I mean – uh – I’m – I’m gay.”
“Oh.” Was Draco’s lame response.
Harry couldn’t believe he’d just admitted that. He covered his face with his hands.
“I’m sorry – “ He started. “I shouldn’t have – “
“No, it’s fine.” Draco interrupted. “I get it. I shouldn’t have asked.”
The awkwardness could have been cut with a knife.
“Um – I just wanted to say thanks.” Draco finally said.
Harry had thought he was asleep, but turned to face him. He pulled his knees up to his chest, mirroring Malfoy’s position across from him.
“For what?” Harry asked.
“The trial. Testifying. Whatever you did.”
“It was nothing.” Harry shook his head. “I mean, we did it for a lot of people.”
“But you didn’t have to. Granger either.”
“I am awake, you know.” Hermione whispered. “And could you two be a little less obvious. Just because he looks asleep doesn’t necessarily mean he is.”
“He definitely is, ‘Mione.” Harry replied, smiling. “He’d have said something already.”
“He doesn’t know?” Draco asked.
“He definitely doesn’t know. I mean – he obviously knows I’m not with Ginny. But that’s it.”
“You have to tell him, Harry.” Hermione started. “I mean – he’ll find out eventually. And it’s going to be so much worse if he finds it out somewhere else.”
Harry sighed. “I will. Eventually.”
“Thanks, Granger.” Draco said, changing the subject again. “For everything.”
“It’s nothing. And please, it’s Hermione. We’re all going to be living together this year, so we might as well get used to it.”
Harry watched Draco as Hermione and Draco continued their conversation.
It wasn’t that Draco was – broken – but almost like he was an entirely new person. His voice was softer and deeper, and his eyes, for the first time since Harry had met him, seemed warm.
The journey was quick, and before long Harry was pulling down his trunk and walking off the train between Hermione and Malfoy.
