Hermione stopped dead in her tracks. She knew that voice very well. It belonged to someone she never thought she would run into here. “Scabior,” she whispered.
Bill looked over at Hermione when she whispered his name. “Scabior, what are you doing here? Last time we saw you, you were running away from a very big battle.”
“Oh I've been around, mate, just ask Hermione,” Scabior said with a smirk.
Bill turned and looked at Hermione with a confused look on his face.
“He is just trying to get to you,” Hermione whispered to Bill. He wasn't convinced.
“Oh now come on, love, that's not what you said last time we saw each other,” Scabior said, as he reached for her hair.
“What are you doing here?” Hermione asked angrily and pulled away further from his reach. Bill stepped forward, putting distance between Hermione and Scabior. Hermione told Bill all about Scabior, and what happened during the war. Bill had no idea Hermione had seen Scabior since the war ended.
“A job,” Scabior said.
“What did you do?” Hermione asked through gritted teeth.
“What I was told to do,” Scabior said.
“Some things never change, do they?” Hermione said sarcastically.
“Excuse me. I hate to breakup this... reunion, but my team and I would really like to get out of here,” Mr. Humdrum said angrily. He did not like the fact that they all knew each other. Something was very odd about all of this.
“You're right, let's move,” Hermione said, and started to move towards the path.
Bill stopped her. “This conversation is not over with,” he whispered.
“Yes, it is,” Hermione said.
“Oh I'm sorry; I didn't know you two were involved. She never said anything about it in our last... encounter,” Scabior said.
“Alright enough!” Hermione said. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“I was hired to secure the objects that these meddling Muggles had uncovered.”
“For who?” Bill asked sternly.
“Didn't catch his name,” Scabior said as he tried to take a swing at Bill.
Bill and Hermione both ducked in time. Bill quickly subdued Scabior, although Scabior did put up a fight.
“Where are the objects that you... acquired?” Hermione asked.
“They were only interested in the box. I was told to leave it in one of the other pathways.”
“What is in the box?” Bill asked as he grabbed Scabior by the collar.
“I didn't look,” Scabior said with a smirk. Bill's face went dark. Hermione knew that look; it was not a look you wanted to be on the other end of.
“Anything could be in that box. What if it is something that could bring destruction? Or something worse,” Hermione shouted. “God, it could be Pandora's box for all you know.”
Scabior didn't say anything, for the first time in a long time he was worried about what he had done and he blamed Hermione for it.
“Bill, we need to get these people out of here,” Hermione said, trying to reason with him.
Bill looked at Hermione and knew she was right. “Let's go. We can worry about the box after.”
“Don't get in the way,” Bill said to Scabior.
Scabior held up his hands and stepped aside. He looked at Hermione with a bit of defeat in his eyes.
Bill, Hermione, and the others raced back to the cavern, through the huge doors and back to the bridge of stairs. “Up the steps,” Bill said to the group.
When they were about half way up the steps there was a loud explosion from below that shook the stairs.
“What was that?” Hermione said, going back down a few steps.
“I don't know, but I don't want to wait around to find out,” Bill said. ”Keep moving.”
Hermione looked down and she saw someone running up behind her. It was Scabior, he looked like something burned his hands. Hermione looked at him with confusion. Scabior was going to say something, but Hermione's eyes widened and she yelled, “Run!”
There was a ball of fire coming up the steps. Scabior's eyes widened also. “Run!”
All of them ran as fast as they could. Scabior pulled out his wand to try to deflect the fireball, but it was no use. David Humdrum and his group reached the top first. Bill followed. Hermione and Scabior were a few steps behind him when the bridge of stairs was hit with the fireball and collapsed. Hermione and Scabior jumped to the top when the stairs started falling. Scabior just barely cleared the stairs. Hermione screamed when her body slammed into the edge of the stairs as she struggled to pull herself to the top.
“Hermione!” Bill screamed as he grabbed one of her hands before she fell to her death. Bill was having a hard time holding on to her. His eyes widened in fear when he saw what was throwing the fireballs. A huge dragon was at the bottom of the cavern. Scabior grabbed on to Bill to help pull Hermione back to safety. Mr. Humdrum went to grab onto Scabior and froze in terror as he caught sight of the dragon.
Bill held Hermione tightly when she was back on her feet. “Are you okay?” he asked as he continued to hold her.
“I'm fine, although I think I bruised a rib,” she said with a wince when Bill grabbed her waist.
“Let's get back to the camp and we can check you out,” Bill said. He hugged her again. If she were another step down she never would have made it to the top. He couldn't believe how close he came to losing her today.
Scabior looked at the couple, and felt a twinge of jealousy. Hermione never looked at him the way she was looking at Bill. “We need to get out of here before that thing comes back.”
The group left the structure. Scabior touched the wall and the door opened. Both Bill and Hermione gave him a strange look. “How did you know to do that?” Hermione asked.
“I'll explain when we get to the camp,” he said.
*!*!*!
When they got back to the excavation site, Bill urged Mr. Humdrum and his team to leave before anything else happened to them. Bill inspected Mr. Humdrum's wound on his arm. He cleaned and re-bandaged it with a first aid kit.
“No. I'm not leaving,” he said as he got up and went to his tent and started to search through the mess.
“Look, I understand that this is your dig, but you are obviously in danger,” Bill said, trying to reason with him.
“I discovered something that could be very dangerous that was stolen. It would be irresponsible of me to leave without getting it back.” He pulled out his cell phone that was buried under clothes.
He stepped out of the tent and dialed a number. “Hello, this is David Humdrum. I need a van sent out here to pick up my crew.” He nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
He looked at Bill. “I'm staying, but I will not put my team in danger.”
Bill nodded. “Okay, but we need to discuss a few things. But first I need to see if Hermione is really okay.”
David Humdrum looked at Bill. “You care a lot for her. She is more than just an associate, isn't she?”
Bill smiled. “So much more.”
Hermione was tending to Lisa's cut with a first aid kit that one of the other members brought. “That should help with any infection, but you might want to go to a doctor just to be sure.”
“Thank you,” Lisa said.
Bill came up. “I should really check you out,” he said to Hermione. “I want to make sure you didn't break your ribs.”
“I think I would know if I broke a rib,” Hermione said.
“Either way, I want to check you out,” Bill said as he took her hand and went into one of the other tents. Bill turned over the cot. “Sit,” he ordered Hermione.
Hermione cautiously sat down, wincing a bit as she did. Bill looked over his shoulder at the door and drew his wand. “Lift up your shirt.”
Hermione did. Bill cursed when he saw the deep purple bruises forming. He waved his wand over her ribs. Bill and Hermione's job took them all over the world, and there wasn't always a hospital around, so Bill and Hermione both took lessons on magical and Muggle first aid.
“Lay down, you have a few hairline cracks that I need to repair,” Bill said gently as he urged Hermione back. He worked as quickly as he could before anyone came in and saw him use his wand. “All better,” he said as he kissed her ribs.
Hermione moaned at his touch. “That feels nice.”
Bill couldn't help himself, he started to kiss his way up her body as his hands gently caressed her skin. He placed a soft kiss on her lips.
“Am I interrupting?” purred a voice from the entrance of the tent.
Hermione quickly pulled down her shirt and sat up, wincing as she did.
Scabior only saw a small glimpse of her creamy skin. He wanted nothing more than to climb on that cot with her. Too bad, he would have to get through Bill Weasley to do it.
“What do you want?” Bill asked angrily. He still needed to talk to Hermione about what happened between her and Scabior. The thought of her with that ex-snatcher really made him angry.
“I just came in to see what is taking you two so long. Now I can see why,” he said with a smirk. “Tell me, Bill, does her hair still smell of orchids?”
Bill growled; it sounded very animal. Hermione put her hand on Bill's shoulder to help calm him down. Bill tensed for a second and then relaxed.
Scabior looked at the two. “Is she your mate?” he asked Bill.
“What?” Hermione said, looking at Bill.
Bill didn't say anything as he looked away from Hermione.
“It sure looks like it, the way he reacts to your touch. You should have told me the last time we saw each other, beautiful.”
Hermione was in shock, she had no idea. Bill never let on that she was his mate. “Bill?”
“He doesn't know what he is talking about.”
Hermione didn't believe him. “Bill, why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I wasn't sure until a few months ago, when we were in Morocco.”
Hermione blushed a bit as she remembered that job. They were sent to track down an ancient magic carpet that would trap Muggles inside and suffocate them. They finished the job and sent the carpet back to the Ministry, but Hermione and Bill stayed and had an erotic vacation. Bill did things to her body that Hermione never knew he could do.
“What happened in Morocco?” Scabior asked with a sly grin.
“None of your business,” Hermione said.
“Is that why you stopped contacting me?” Scabior said to Hermione. “Or was it because you finally realized that this one was enough?”
Bill growled and leaped at Scabior. The two of them were wrestling on the floor. Hermione rolled her eyes at them. “Will you two stop behaving like children? Bill, please.”
Hermione tried to grab Bill, but he swung around when she said his name and accidentally knocked her to the ground.
Hermione looked shocked for a moment. Both Bill and Scabior stopped fighting when she went down.
Bill scrambled to Hermione, “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
Hermione looked at him darkly. “No thanks to you.” She got up and left the tent, leaving a stunned Scabior and a troubled Bill behind.
Hermione stalked out of the tent, and she looked around. She saw a van approach and Mr. Humdrum walk over to it. He must be sending his team away. She went to the campfire and sat down. She saw her backpack that she left there earlier sitting on a chair. She picked it up and took out her camera.
“Ah, I was wondering whose backpack that was. I knew it wasn't part of my team's,” Mr. Humdrum said.
“I took it off when we saw your empty camp. I knew something wasn't right and the backpack would have weighed me down in the search,” Hermione said as she turned on her camera and started looking through the pictures.
“That's a really nice camera. How long have you been a photographer?” David asked, sitting down.
Hermione smiled. “A couple of years. I mainly do it as a hobby.”
“Those are beautiful,” he said, looking at the pictures of the ruins.
“Thank you.” Hermione said quietly.
Mr. Humdrum looked at her debating on how to approach the question he wanted to ask. “May I ask you a question?”
“Of course, Mr. Humdrum.”
“Please call me David.” He smiled at Hermione.
“David,” Hermione said back.
“What is in the box that I found?”
Hermione shrugged. “I honestly don't know, but it has to be valuable or someone wouldn't have gone through all of this.”
“So this is what you do, rescuing kidnapped archaeologists.”
Hermione laughed. “No, you would be the first. We are kind of like bounty and treasure hunters.”
“Was it the box that brought you here?”
Hermione hesitated. How much should she tell him? He already knew something was different about the box. “Yes, but we didn't want to steal it. We were going to examine it, to see what was inside of it and if it was dangerous.”
“What happened to your partner?” David blurted out.
Hermione put her guard up. “What do you mean?”
“I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but was he attacked? His face...”
“Oh, yes, he was attacked; it was a wolf,” Hermione said. It really wasn't a lie. Greyback was a werewolf.
“That must have been scary,” David said. He liked talking to her. She was very easy to talk to and she seemed very smart and self-sufficient. He would love to have her on his team.
“It was, and I didn't even know him very well when it happened.”
“How did you two start working together?”
“It's a long story. Lots of heartbreak and a need for a change,” Hermione said, looking back at the pictures.
David got the hint that Hermione didn't want to go into details. “He really cares for you,” he whispered.
Hermione was about to ask him a question when Lisa came up to the two of them.
Lisa pointed to the van. “We are ready to go. Are you sure you won't come with us?”
David stood and took Lisa's hand. “No, I need to stay here and make sure that the box is recovered.”
Lisa shook her head in agreement. She knew that he would not leave until the job was done. “Okay, good luck and call us and keep us informed.”
“I will.” He kissed her forehead and then on the cheek and walked her to the van.
“I think those two are involved,” Bill said from behind Hermione.
Hermione jumped at his voice. She was still very angry with him, but talking to David had helped to calm her down.
“How do you know?” Hermione asked with a bite in her voice.
Bill treaded carefully. “I could smell her all over him.”
“They work together,” Hermione said.
“The scents are too strong,” he said as he sat down.
“Oh,” was all Hermione said.
“Please don't be angry with me,” Bill said as he took her hand.
“I just wish you'd told me I was your mate,” Hermione said. “Maybe I would have...”
“Stopped seeing Scabior,” Bill finished.
“You have no right to judge. How many times did you disappear and show up two days later smelling of someone else's perfume?” Hermione said angrily.
Bill hung his head. “They didn't mean anything.”
“But you still went, and that is when I would contact Scabior.”
“So you sleeping with him is somehow my fault,” Bill said angrily.
“No, and I don't regret what I did.”
Bill looked at her, his eyes narrowing. “Do you have feelings for Scabior?”
Hermione's eyes widened in shock at the question. “I've never thought about it.”
“Yes you have,” Bill said softly.
Hermione shook her head, stood up and walked away. Scabior walked out of the shadows and stared after her. He looked back to Bill; he had heard every word.
Hermione distanced herself from Bill and Scabior. How dare Bill accuse her of having feelings for Scabior? Who did he think he was? They were not dating. He didn't own her. She never asked him whom he slept with!
If Hermione weren't so distracted with her thoughts, she would have noticed that she was being watched. She started to head back to the camp when she heard shuffling behind her. She grabbed for her wand, but she was jumped from behind and her wand dropped to the ground. She was able to get out a scream before her mouth was covered and she was dragged off by three men. She kicked and fought as hard as she could, but there were three of them and only one of her.
