The House . . . a large white clapboard home with seven bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a living room, a den, a kitchen, a sunroom, a dining room, a basement, and an attic, all told; not to mention the two outbuildings, the garden, and large yard. Five people and a baby occupied this lovely abode, trying to recover from the wounds of war through closeness and family. It has been more than a year since the war, a more than a year since they lost Ron. At first, the plan was to be just Harry, Ginny, Hermione, and her baby living in the house. Then, one stormy night, two dear friends showed up with good and bad tidings.
(The previous night)
A storm was raging outside as Ginny and Harry were unpacking their few belongings and arranging their new furniture. Hermione was upstairs, sleeping. She had been up and down with Robin the previous night.
"Hey, Gin?" asked Harry, taking a clock out of its newspaper wrapping and setting it on the mantel.
"Yeah, Harry?" replied Ginny, sitting back in a chair, eyes closed.
"I love you," he said, kissing her forehead as someone knocked on the door.
"I love you too, Harry. Now go get the door," said Ginny playfully. Harry went to the door, somewhat startled by what greeted him. A great black dog, and a man draped in a cloak. Both were sopping wet, looking like a wraith and his hellhound with the lightning flashing behind them. He cracked open the door and whipped out his wand, pointing it through the crack in the door. "Who are you, and what's your business here?" he asked suspiciously.
"Harry? It's Remus!" said the wet cloak.
"I knew that . . . " muttered Harry as he let them in, shoving his wand back into his pocket. The sopping wet dog turned to a sopping wet Sirius, a puddle forming on the floor under his feet.
"Oh, hello Remus, Sirius! Let me get you a towel," said Ginny from the kitchen doorway, disappearing momentarily. Both men looked down at the floor, obviously bearing bad news and looking a bit shaken as well. “Well, Sirius? What is it? What's happened now? And why are you in dog form?” Harry asked as Ginny came back into the room, giving Sirius a big, fluffy white towel.
“Well, we figured with what happened, more Death Eaters would be out prowling looking for us. A man out walking his dog in the rain is much less conspicuous than two men out at night,” explained Sirius.
"Number twelve is no longer standing, Harry," said Remus.
"We're lucky that we weren't there," said Sirius, drying himself. "But that horrid portrait of my mum is finally gone!" he muttered, obviously overjoyed at the thought.
“We haven't informed the Ministry yet, or the rest of the Order,” said Remus, “All hell is going to break loose.”
"Is there anything we can do to help?"asked Ginny. She was always eager to help anyone. She would probably help Draco Malfoy if he needed it. That was one of the many reasons Harry loved her.
"Well, er, we don't really have anywhere to go . . . " Remus said sheepishly, avoiding the question and inspecting the frayed hem of his cloak.
"Don't beat around the bush, Remus! Merlin, we have four extra bedrooms, not to mention a huge living space!" exclaimed Harry, appalled that they would think he would deny them a place in his home. “Although, I would like to know what happened to Grimmauld Place.”
Hermione came downstairs with Robin, yawning and bed-headed. Her face lit up when she saw Remus and Sirius, giving them each a surprisingly strong one-armed hug. A few minutes later, they were all settled in the living room, gathered to hear what Sirius and Remus would have to say. Harry and Ginny sat on the loveseat together, Hermione, slightly confused-looking, in an armchair. Sirius and Remus sat on the couch, and little Robin was sitting on Sirius' lap contentedly playing with his hair, laughing and gurgling when he shook it at her. She had really taken to him, and Sirius had already grown quite fond of her. Remus was lavishing her with attention as well, obviously as taken as Sirius. Hermione was looking on, a motherly smile on her face, but still watching her little girl like a hawk. After a while, Robin began to tire of all the attention and started to fuss. Hermione fed her and took her upstairs, settling her in for another nap. When she came back downstairs, the atmosphere had almost visibly changed. Hermione sat down, somewhat worried at the news that the haggard men had brought.
"Apparently, a small group of three or four Death Eaters from Voldemort's inner circle are still alive," started Remus, expression grim, “We are almost positive they are targeting any members of the Order that are still alive, starting with Sirius and I. We must be at the top of the list.”
"And they knew about the Order headquarters. They succeeded in reducing it to rubble, apparently not caring if anyone was in there or not," said Sirius, "We had gone to check in on the Burrow- By the way, Ginny, your older brothers are all there, Molly wants us all to go over tomorrow. You have no idea the fuss she threw over us,” Sirius glared at the thought. “Anyway, we didn't get back in time to save the house or to catch the Death Eaters." He looked irritated.
Harry sighed, staring at the ticking clock over the fireplace. The other men began to talk about some new wards to put on the house, even though it was already so heavily warded, a squirrel with a malevolent intent could trip the alarm.
"Looks like we're going to Mum's tomorrow, love," said Ginny, looking at Harry.
"Sirius, Remus- I know you're here on bad tidings, but I'm happy you guys are staying with us," said Hermione, “It will be nice to have more people in this huge house.” Everyone gaped at her, amazed that she had even spoken, especially so cheerily. Ever since Ron had died, she'd been sort of distant and reclusive.
"'Mione? Are you okay?" Ginny asked tentatively.
"Yeah, I'm alright, now I know that Ron wants me to move on. Not necessarily forget, but let go. I heard his voice on the grounds yesterday," she replied, turning her face. "I heard him laugh, and I heard him say that he loves me,” she said quietly, afraid they would find her completely bonkers. The others looked at her skeptically, and Sirius came to the rescue.
"I heard that sometimes, a part of a soul can linger after death, with a sort of message for a certain person. When that person gets that message, the soul wisps away, finally able to move on. However, it takes a very strong emotion to last through death, especially almost a year after death. A person just can't arbitrarily decide that they want to leave a message, I mean... it's not even really a message, it's more like an audible impression," he explained. Hermione looked even more confused and yet relieved, knowing that she wasn't batty after all.
"Hermione, you realize that this means that Ron loved you so much, his soul refused to leave until you heard him, and he was sure that you were slowly beginning to let him go," Remus said gently, eyes full of sadness.
A tear slipped down her cheek, to be deftly wiped away. She felt like he was here right now, beside her. She knew that he got to see baby Robin. She knew that he was happy. She looked at the diamond and silver ring with the initials R.W. and H.G., and 'I love you, Hermione' engraved on the inside of the band, smiling.
