Chapter Two: Flying Lessons
Liz was standing in the direct center of the pitch as he walked out of the stadium, her arms crossed at her chest with her hip jutting out and a foot tapping impatiently. He chuckled.
However, as he got closer, Charlie could see clearly just how terrified she really was. Her stance may have given the impression of aloof irritation, but her expression was that of complete panic, her eyes shining with unshed tears. Suddenly he felt very guilty for making her do this.
“Liz,” he said softly, dropping the brooms at his feet and placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to push you into this. Let’s just go back, it’s late.”
“N – no. I want to,” she croaked out in a harsh whisper, staring at his chest.
He gripped her chin and tilted her face towards his. “I want to,” she repeated stronger, her beautiful blue eyes blazing. Pulling her chin from his hands she continued: “besides, it’s silly, this irrational fear.”
“Ok,” he said hesitantly. “As long as you’re sure.”
“I’m sure.”
“Good,” he said, clearing his throat and rubbing his hands together in excitement. “First thing first. Stand next to your broom – there, like that. Now with your hand over it, calmly and firmly say ‘Up.’”
“U – up,” she said, faltering.
“You have to be firm,” he said as she frowned at her broom still resolutely lying on the ground. “The broom can tell when you’d rather keep your feet on the ground.”
“It’s just a broom,” she huffed.
“Trust me.”
“Oh, fine... Up,’ she said firmly, squealing with delight as the broom flew into her hands. “I did it!”
“Yes, congratulations,” he smiled. “Go ahead and get on.”
“W – what? Get on? Already?”
“Yeah, well that’s the thing about learning to fly, you have to actually be on the broom,” he teased softly. Noticing the rapid return of her panic he quickly moved to help calm her. “Don’t worry,” he said softly, helping her onto the broom and correcting her grip. “We won’t go further than a few inches from the ground. And these brooms are ancient, you don’t have to worry about speed, you could be out-striped by a passing butterfly.”
“Ok,” she said, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes before gently pushing off the ground.
Liz let out a small gasp as the broom rose in the air, where she hovered, two inches above the ground, her eyes squeezed shut. Charlie mounted his broom beside her.
“You can open your eyes now,” he said.
“Oh,’ she gasped, wiggling her feet in the air.
“See, it’s not so bad. Next I want you to carefully lean forward. I’ll be next to you the whole time, I won’t let you fall.”
“It’s not so much the falling, as it is the possibility of loosing total control of this broom that terrifies me,’ she said, gently leaning forward.
“You don’t have to worry about that. The broom will only do what you tell it, you’re the one in control,” he reassured her.
“You may bein control of your broom, but I’m almost certain my broom is the one in control in this situation.”
“Now, push down on the broom,” he said, ignoring her.
Gently the two of them touched down a few meters from where they started. “So?” he said, looking at her expectantly.
“Well, you’re a good teacher Charlie Weasley. But, I’m sorry, I just don’t see what the big deal is.”
“In my defense, you probably have to rise at least a meter for the full effect.”
“Probably,” she replied smiling. “Though I definitely don’t trust myself to go any higher than that.”
He looked at her thoughtfully, as she stood staring into the night sky nibbling her bottom lip in way that made him want to groan. “Do you trust me?”
“I thought we’d established that when I allowed you to give me a flying lesson,” she said sarcastically.
“Then come flying with me,” he said.
She paused, staring at him. “Alright,” she whispered.
It took a moment for Charlie to process her response; he hadn’t expected her to say yes. The thought of flying with her was more exciting than he cared to admit. Placing her on the broom in front of him, he rose quickly into the air above the stadium. As soon as their feet left the ground, Liz let out a muffled scream and turned to bury her face against his chest. He could feel her shivering against him.
“Ohmygod. Ohmygod. Ohmygod,” she repeated, her voice an octave higher than normal.
Charlie snaked a muscular arm around her tiny waist, pulling her closer against him, hoping to make her feel more secure. “Open your eyes,” he whispered into her ear. “You’re missing it.”
Flying always made Charlie feel good, but this time, with Liz in front of him, it was... brilliant. She was beginning to relax against his chest and he could feel her responding to the movement of the broom. Encouraged, Charlie put on a burst of speed and rose higher into the air, coming to a halt fifty meters above the goal posts.
“You win Charlie,” she said turning to smile at him. “This is amazing. Look at the forest from up here. Look at the castle!”
“Told you you would like it.”
“Yes well, mind you I’m fairly certain this would be much less spectacular had I come up here on my own. It would have been difficult to fully take in the sights through blind panic,” she said settling back against his chest once more
Charlie chuckled. “The other side of the castle is even better, you have a full view of the lake. At night... with the reflection of the castle lights...”
“Can we go?” Liz asked breathlessly.
“Sure,” he replied, leaning forward towards the castle.
As the two flew onwards, weaving through the castle’s many towers, Charlie suddenly became very aware of her closeness. Illuminated by the light through the windows, he could fully appreciate her beauty. Her lips were parted in awe in a way that made him want to run his tongue along them and the warmth of her body against his was electric, sending tingling sensations straight to his groin. He fought to control himself; Liz was leaning against him, snug as a postage stamp, and was certain to feel anything.
He set them down on the Astronomy Tower, the tallest on the side overlooking the lake. The view was familiar and comforting to Charlie, the watery reflection of a thousand golden points of light.
“Oh Charlie, this is amazing!” she exclaimed.
“I used to come up here all the time,” he reflected, moving to lean on the parapet next to her. Lost in reminiscence he continued. “I knew you’d like it. I always used to take girls up here for a good sn – ” Charlie stopped short, horror struck by what he said.
“For a good what?” she asked, eying him suspiciously.
“Nothing,” he said coughing to clear his throat.
“For a good snog?”
“Well... yeah,” he replied sheepishly. “I mean, you have to admit the view does have its... charms.”
She turned to face him, her head tilted and eyebrow cocked. “You didn’t have an ulterior motive for bringing me here, did you, Mr. Weasley?” she purred, letting a finger trail down his chest.
