Orange, red, purple, and pink tinted the gold leaf adorning the temple walls and illuminated the snoring black haired man under a gold and green blanket. A large hand stretched to cover the creamy bronze colored eyelids as a large yawn escaped the man and he burrowed beneath the covers. “Miguel, put out the candle and come back to bed,” came the deep grumble. The Sun’s rays dipped again and left Tulio’s face in the cool shadows. The dark Hispanic gypsy then sighed in contentment as relaxed beneath the covers. Then suddenly he sprang up with a start, messy black locks haphazardly covering his face. “Miguel?” he said as he glanced back and forth, eyes searching wildly for the strange visions from his dream. The temple was silent, the gold gleaming in the last embers of sunlight and illuminating the curtained hall. Miguel’s own golden locks were nowhere to be seen. It must have been a dream. He’d take worry about what Miguel was doing with Altivo in the city over the freaky stuff he’d seen in the dream any day. He settled back down on the soft blankets and chuckled. His mother had once told him dreams were a combination of prophesy, fear, and hope. What category had that fallen into?He supposed one day he might have wanted a child, but Miguel giving birth… Oh, Lord, what a weird idea. First of all, no man had ever had a baby by another man. Secondly, Miguel could barely take care of himself. He was always getting into trouble and expecting Tulio to come and save him. Miguel himself was enough of a child for Tulio's parental side right now.“Tulio?” came Chel’s call. “Are you up?” The smell of steamed meat alerted him to the fact that it was time for dinner.“Yeah…,” Tulio said, stretching and tossing the covers aside and walking towards the curtain that divided the sleeping area from the ornate rug used for meals, “You’ll never believe what I just…” As soon as he opened the curtain he was slapped. “OW! What was that for?”“I don’t know,” Chel said, with her tiny hands on her large hips. “How about the fact that you never told me you and Miguel were together… as in… well together?”Oh. Miguel must have told her. “But we’re not exclusive. Sometimes we sleep with women,” Tulio said, massaging the angry area. “Let me tell you about this girl in Barcelo…” He was slapped again. “OW… enough with the slapping.”“The love of the two male Gods for one another is cherished among my people,” Chel told him, poking him in his bony chest with her index finger. “It is forbidden to come between two warriors in love, much less those favored by the Gods!”“Qué?” Tulio stupidly remarked. “It won’t matter in a few days when we go back to Espa…”Chel slapped him again, this time on the other cheek. “I cannot even believe you’re thinking of taking a newborn baby anywhere.” She turned her back on him and set the food up on the blanket.“Wait!” Tulio exclaimed, his hands up in a defensive position as he paled considerably. “All that was real?” Then his face went almost a bleached white. “Miguel? Where’s Miguel and the…” He dropped to his knees in an awkward position then tore at his hair. “Holy… Miguel’s out there right now… with a baby… Miguel’s alone with a fragile infant…” Tulio jumped up and grabbed Chel’s wrist. “Come on! We have to find them before something happens.”
Miguel smiled at his beautiful little boy swaddled tightly with precious red cloth and rope as he walked through one of the city’s smaller and less traveled cobbled roads with the baby cradled in his arms. Although he’d given birth only a few hours ago, he felt no different than he had before he played the ball game. So, never one to sit around, Miguel decided to take his son into the fresh air while Tulio was sleeping.
“Lord Miguel!” came a cry to his left as one of the guards in jaguar skin ran towards him and fell in step with him. “Are you sure you and the young lord should walking so soon?”Miguel smiled and turned towards the man. He’d never had so many people worried for him before and it was starting to feel almost like the city was a huge family. “Thank you for the concern but I feel fine and Amado seems to enjoy being outside.” He chuckled as an orange and yellow butterfly landed on his son’s nose and made the boy go cross eyed before it flew away. The guard’s eyes went soft. “Well, at least allow me to get you a sling to carry the young lord in.”Miguel paused and then nodded. “I had not thought of that. Thank you.”“Wait right here!” the guard said as he ran in the direction of the market.Miguel sighed and tapped his foot impatiently. Suddenly, frantic squeals of joy reached Miguel’s ears and small little being ran to his legs swift as arrows. “Lord Miguel, can we see the baby?” one little girl asked, her dark eyes on the red bundle.Miguel nodded, “Just don’t touch. Newborns are very fragile.” He stooped down to allow the children to see.“Wow!” one little boy with very short hair said, “She’s so pretty!” Miguel laughed.“It’s a boy, Stupid,” another little boy who looked to be the other’s older brother said.“But she’s too pretty to be a boy,” the first little boy reasoned as if it was only logical for it to be so. “Lord Miguel’s pretty and has a penis but she’s a girl.” Several other children nodded in agreement as Miguel choked. He thought he was very, very manly, thank you very much. Besides, a girl would not have a goatee like his.“I guess so,” said the older boy conceded. Before Miguel could correct them, the guard had returned with the sling accompanied by the Chief Tannabok. “Here you go, My Lord,” the guard said, holding up the woven hammock-like sling covered in white cloth as Miguel stood up. “Do you need help getting it on?”Miguel nodded. He thought he knew the basic concept but he wasn’t completely sure. But as the guard approached him, Amado began to cry and he felt a strange sensation in his chest. He looked down and saw two wet patches on his chest. “Wha…” Then he realized what it was. Milk. His baby wanted his milk.Chief Tannabok smiled and placed a comforting, pudgy arm on Miguel’s shoulder. “Perhaps you would care to join me for dinner, Lord Miguel? My home is nearby. You can feed the baby while we talk about plans for the new boat.”“New boat?” Miguel repeated, confusion and slight joy coloring filling him as he made shushing noises at his son. If the chief was building them a new boat, then it meant he would be staying in El Dorado for longer.“Unless you wish to stay?” the chief said knowingly as he steered the young man towards the steps of his large home. For several minutes, visions of a future living in El Dorado flashed before his eyes. He could see himself raising Amado here. He saw his son at five with his face and Tulio’s hair running around in the garb of the natives and playing a game of ball with the other little children. He could see Tulio teaching Amado to write Spanish and telling the wide-eyed boy fairy tales with himself helping Tulio to act them out. He could see Chief Tannabok teaching Amado the customs of El Dorado and sneaking the boy this wonderful new drink they’d been fed called chocolate. Lastly, he saw himself and Tulio cuddling as they watched the exhausted boy sleep on a pile of cushions. “Stay… I…”Then he had visions of Amado back in Spain. He saw himself and Tulio being arrested upon their return to the city and little Amado being either forced into the foundling place at the church and being adopted or having to roam the streets looking for food and having to avoid the hands of men who wanted to hurt the boy. He’d never allow that to happen to the precious boy in his arms… even if it meant giving up Tulio. As the chief led them up the stairs, Miguel turned towards him and said, “I…”
“Miguel! Miguel!” Tulio called as he ran through the slowly emptying market as vendors folded and wrapped up their wares for the day to go home. He grabbed an elderly man’s elbow and asked, “Have you seen Miguel?”
“Na.. No, my lord,” the old man replied.Tulio shut his eyes and pinched the narrow bridge of his nose in annoyance. “Thanks.” The old man left with his dinner purchase of fish and Tulio sighed in defeat. If he were Miguel, where would he be.“If I may be of assistance, My Lord?” asked the familiar voice from in front of him. Tzekel-Kan.Tulio raised his eyes. “Have you seen Miguel?”“No, My Lord. But my servants tell me he and your son were last seen in the company of Chief Tannabok.”Relief flooded Tulio. Tannabok would not let Miguel do anything stupid. “Thank you, Tzekel-Kan.” He then turned to head in the direction of where he vaguely remembered was the Chief’s home resided when he was stopped by a hand on his shoulder.“If I may speak freely, My Lord. I would be worried about the Chief’s interest in your husband.”“What do you mean?” Tulio asked suspiciously, knowing Tzekel-Kan hated the chief with a passion. “He seems far to free with touching Lord Miguel or have you not noticed?” the voice was dipped in sweet venom. “Are you sure the little lord is even yours or a demi-god?”Tulio gave Tzekel-Kan a disgusted look as Chel joined them. “Lord Tulio? Have you found them?” Chel asked, looking puzzled at the presence of the disgraced priest.“No. Not yet but can you show me where I can find the chief?” Tulio asked, wanting to find Miguel and the child as soon as possible so he could stop worrying.“As you wish,” Chel said, grabbing Tulio’s wrist and pulling him with her. Neither noticed the way the priest’s eyes narrowed at the two.TBCThanks for the reviews Soria, Nekluvshp, Sarah999, Tripliss, and Sen_Nightshade.
